Kaplan, Hughes, Borgman and Smith Win Knoxville Shootout

After spending the previous 2 nights working at the race track it was fun to go to the races and just watch some racing. Hung out and chatted with a few drivers on Sunday at the 2nd Annual Knoxville Shootout for Modifieds, Stock Cars, SportMods and Hobby Stocks at the historic race track located at the Marion County Fairgrounds in Knoxville.

The first feature of the night was the SportMods 15 lap feature. Mitch Van Engen grabbed the early race lead but just after the completion of lap one the caution waved for Logan Anderson in turn 1. On the restart, it would be Austin Kaplan grabbing the lead away from Van Engen. Kaplan would appear to be going on the fairly easy win but the caution waved on lap 12 for Jim Gillenwater in turn 4 and then again on lap 14 for Eric Elliott and Gatlin Leytham in turn 2. That forcde a green-white-checkered but Kaplan would hold to take the win. Glenn Gladson Jr. came home 2nd, Carter VanDenBerg was 3rd, Jack Housley was 4th and Jared Timmerman was 5th.

In the 15 lap Hobby Stock Feature it was Corey Madden grabbing the early lead by a short margin as Oskaloosa's Mike Hughes was right there and it was Hughes taking the top spot on lap 2. The only race caution came out just after the completion of lap 2 when Gina Greubel would spin in turn 4. On the restart, Hughes would have to deal with Madden and Knoxville's Bill Bonnett. Bonnett grabbed the lead away on lap 4 and held on to the lead until lap 10 before Hughes grabbed the lead back on lap 11. Hughes would go on to take the win meanwhile Bonnett would fall back to fnish 6th. Getting by Bonnett was Corey Madden, Chuck Madden Jr., Kevin Fee and Eric Stanton.

Smokin' Joe Zadina lead the first 9 laps in the Stock Cars feature before David Brandies took the top spot. Brandies held the until lap 17 when Lance Borgman made the pass to take the lead. Borgman would go on to take the win over Zadina and Brandies. Keith Knop and Nathan Wood rounded out the top 5.

Jacob Murray lead the first 10 laps in the Modifieds feature before the caution would come out when Casey Greubel would spin in turn 3 and 4. On the restart, Murray would be passed by Dylan Smith from Nebraska. Smith and the field saw the caution wave one more time on lap 13 for Russ Gladson in turn 3. Smith wouldn't be denied and took the win over Jesse Sobbing. Josh Foster finished 3rd, "G Money" Richie Gustin Jr. finish 4th and Todd Shute was 5th.

I want to thank Tyler, Jeff and Ben Wollam along with Kyle Kirk from Team 3W for letting me tag along and have some fun at the races.

For Immediate Release:

Deal Wins Thriller of A Stock Car Feature at Hamilton County Speedway
By Jeremy Fox

Webster City, Iowa (April 27th, 2013) – A new season with a new promoter in charge at the historic half mile, the fans would be treated to a fantastic night of racing with some other wonderful added entertainment during intermission.

Alan Van Gorp jumped into the early lead in the Stock Car feature looked to pulling away until 3rd row outside starter Lance Deal worked  his way up to the second spot and set his sights on chasing Van Gorp. Deal did exactly that on lap 12. Deal tried to get by Van Gorp but  couldn’t complete the pass until the last lap. Van Gorp and Deal raced side by side all the way around the race and coming off turn 4 would be side by side that is how they came across the line but it was Deal grabbing the win by his front bumper over Van Gorp. Ninth place starter Mark Elliott worked his way up to finish third, John Campbell came home in fourth and Steve Meyer was fifth.

In the IMCA Sport Compacts feature it was Adam Strunk grab the lead early but Dustin Haggard took the lead away on lap 3. Haggard’s lead was short lived as he experience some troubles which allow Strunk to get by again. Strunk would lead the remaining laps to take the win over Danny Sassman Jr., Shawn Cooney, Jason Clark and Sarah Totten.

Ty Griffith grabbed the early lead in the IMCA Hobby Stock feature but just after the completion of lap 1, the caution would come out when Eric Larson rolled his car on the front stretch. After the mess was cleaned up, Griffith started to pull away until he encountered lap traffic which allowed Cory Gansen, Cody Nielsen, Craig and Curt Graham but he was able to hold them off to take the win. Gansen took second, Nielsen was 3rd, Craig Graham was 4th and Curt Graham was 5th.

Bob Sutherland won the pole in a game of musical chairs and he would take full advantage of it as he lead the first six laps. A caution came on lap 6 and that meant on the restart, Sutherland had 9th place starter Matt Lettow on his back bumper and this would be a race. Lettow had the lead at the line on lap 7 before Sutherland grabbed it back on lap 8. Lettow finally completed the pass on lap 9 to take the lead. The things that slowed Lettow was a caution on lap 12 for debris and then on lap 13 when 2nd and 3rd place drivers at the time, Sutherland and Andy Tiernan would get together. Lettow took the win over Matt Webb, Joel Rust, Chase Ellingson and Coty Albers.

Jay Noteboom lead from start to finish in the IMCA Modifieds feature and the only thing that slowed him was the 2 race cautions. Greg Elliott worked his way up to finish 2nd, Jon Snyder started 15th and finish 3rd. Mark Elliott started 10th in feature and came home 4th and Scott Olson was 5th.

In the IMCA Late Models feature it was Darrel DeFrance starting right where he left off the night before, where he won in Des Moines. DeFrance had a full straightway lead at one point in time before lap traffic slowed him just a bit that allowed Chad Cooney to chase him down late but it was the Veteran DeFrance taking the win, his 2nd of the weekend. Chad Cooney, Jason Hahne, Todd Cooney and Craig Jacobs rounded out the top 5.

The racing season will continue next Saturday Night at Historic Half Mile and race through August every Saturday Night.

Oskaloosa, Iowa (April 24th, 2013) – Finally after getting rained out the first three weeks, the Southern Iowa Speedway would dodge mother nature to get Edel Lawn Care Night.

The First feature of the night was the IMCA Sport Compacts and this feature would be exciting. John Whalen grabbed the early lead but his brother Bill Whalen Jr. was right there battling out. Merv Chandler would join the fun and Chandler got by both the Whalen’s to grab the lead. Bill Whalen wouldn’t give up as he and Chandler battled out the last four laps and it was Whalen that would take the win over Chandler. John Whalen finished third, Matt Moore was fourth and Alex Sampson was fifth.

Pepsi Cola IMCA Hobby Stocks feature saw Dustin Griffiths lead from start to finish and the two things that slowed him down was a caution on lap 3 for debris and lap traffic. Griffiths would take the win over Bill Bonnett, Dale Porter, Danny Thrasher and Craig Brown.

Ryan Fullenkamp would lead the first three laps in the Pyramid Graphics and Sports IMCA Sport Mod feature but on the fourth lap, Fullenkamp would spin in turn 3 bringing out the yellow and handing the lead over to Curtis VanDerWal. VanDerWal wouldn’t give up that lead as he cruised on to the easy win after the caution on lap 6. Brett Lowry would work his way up to finish in the runner up spot. Kansas Driver Ben Kates was third, Carter VanDenBerg was fourth and Jason Hall was fifth.

In the Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars it was Nathan Wood grabbing the early lead but a caution on lap two for Rich Vogt, Corey Stout, Todd Reitzler, Brad Pinkerton and Randy Killen all getting together on the backstretch. Once that was cleared up the race would resume and Woods had to deal with Damon Murty. Murty would make the pass on lap 4 to take the lead and not look back, Murty would take his 8th win of the season according to his post race interview. Wood finished 2nd, Stout worked his way back up to a 3rd place finish, Alan Van Gorp was 4th and Tom Killen was 5th.

Jesse Dennis would lead the first lap in the Musco Lighting IMCA Modified before it would be “The Gasman" Cayden Carter grabbing the lead. Carter appeared to be heading to the easy win until lap traffic would slow him down which would allow Todd Shute and Jesse Sobbing chase him down infortunately Carter would hold them off to take the win. Shute was 2nd, Sobbing was 3rd with Kyle Wahlert and Jacob Murray rounding out the top 5.

Final feature of the night would be the Iowa Sportsman Series feature and it was Gene Tish taking the lead early. Wild And Eventful Night at the Benton County Speedway

After having its weekly show last week on Fisher Towing Night cut short because of rain it was back to action at the Benton County Speedway in Vinton on Ron Da Voo Lounge and Deli Night. The program would continue right were it left off the week before with the make up fatures in the Hobby Stocks, Modifieds and Stock Cars.

First up was the IMCA Hobby Stocks make-up feature which would begin with 5 laps down and it was Shannon Anderson from Urbandale resuming command of the lead and he began to pull away. It appeared Anderson would go on to the win until lap traffic would slow him down which allowed Brian Happel to chase him down. Happel would try to get the lead away on the waving green but couldn't complete the pass. On the next lap, Happel would drive it in hard and make contact with Anderson forcing the yellow to come out forcing a green-white-checkered finish, Happel would be blacked flagged for questionable driving and sent to the pits meanwhile Anderson was going to be sent to the tail before exiting to the pits. Chris Luloff, who was third now was the new race leader. Luloff would lead the remaining two laps to take the win over Kyle Parizek, Matt Brown, Nick Murty and Justin Stander

In the IMCA Modified make-up feature the caution would wave before one lap could be completed as Brandon Banks would experience some troubles getting started and stacked up the field forcing a few cars to the pits to fix damage and tires. When the race got going it would be Joe Docekal grabbing the early lead. Docekal looking to be going on to the win but at halfway, Ronn Lauritzen would make the pass and grab the lead. Lauritzen was out front but Richie Gustin was coming through and made his way up to second on lap 12 and tried to pass Lauritzen for the lead. Gustin would finally get his nose in front on lap 19 for the lead but going into turn 1, Gustin would spin and bring out the yellow. Lauritzen would hold off challenges from Docekal and JD Auringer to take the win. Docekal was second, Auringer was third, Troy Cordes was fourth and Vern Jackson was fifth.

Damon Murty would lead from start to finish in the 15 lap IMCA Stock Car make-up feature that was event free compared to the first 2 make up features. John Emerson came home in runner-up position. Rick Kriegel, Jerry Miles and Scott Beauregard rounded out the top 5.

Now on to the regular night features and the first one was the IMCA Sport Compacts 12 lap feature. It would be Bill Whalen Jr. leading from start to finish but it was not easy as he would have to hold off Nathan Chandler through out the entire feature. Merv Chandler would finish third, Steve Miedke was fourth and Travis Losenicky was fifth.

Rookie Brady Graham would lead the first four laps in the 15 lap IMCA Sport Mod feature before the caution would wave when Jordan Peters would go off turn 4. On the restart, Graham would be passed by Danny Dvorak and shortly after the yellow would come out for Ryan King going off turn 3. Dvorak would continue to lead but on lap 10 would have to deal with Nick Roberts. Dvorak and Roberts would start fighting for the top spot when the yellow came out on lap 11 for Brad Iverson and Brett Lowry would get together in turn 3. Dvorak and Roberts resume their battle when the race resumed and on lap 13, the two would make contact that sent Roberts spinning and coming to a stop in turn 2. Dvorak would go to the win with Brett Lowry in 2nd, Kurt Moeding was 3rd, Brad Iverson was 4th and Joel Rust was 5th.

Before one lap was completed in the 15 lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature the caution would wave twice for debris. When the race got going it was Paul Nagle grabbing the lead with Shannon Anderson and Brian Happel right behind him. Just after the completion of lap 5, Chris Luloff would roll his car off the top side of turn 1, He would be okay but his night would come to and end. Nagle again would have to hold off Anderson and now Justin Stander but on lap 10 the caution would come out again when Brian Happel would have something break in his rear end and roll over in turn 3, Kyle Parizek would drive hard off turn 3 and both would be okay, Happel night would be over but Parizek would continue. The final 5 laps would go un-eventful and it was Nagle holding off Anderson to take the win. Stander, Matt Brown and Justin Wacha rounded out the top 5.

Kyle Brown and Mike Burbridge would battle it out for the lead through out the early going and it would be Brown leading lap 1 before Burbridge would grab the lead on lap 2. Burbridge would continue to lead until Brown would grab the lead back on lap 6. Brown would continue to lead when the caution would come out on lap 16 when Ronn Lauritzen would go for a spin on the front stretch and JD Auringer would spin in turn 4. Brown would lead the remaining laps to take the win. Richie Gustin would finish a close 2nd, Patrick Flannagan was 3rd, Tyler Droste was 4th and Troy Cordes was 5th.

The final feature of the night was the IMCA Stock Car Feature and it was Mike Galli grabbing the earyl lead but just after 1 lap was completed the caution woul wave for debris. When the race resumed it was was Damon Murty grabbing the lead and then the yellow would wave again when Rick Kriegel would spin in turn 4. Another caution would wave on lap 3 when Galli would spin on the backstretch. Murty wouldn't let that bother him as he began to pull away when the next caution came out on lap 9 for debris in turns 3 and 4. Murty again would not let that bother him in the meantime the John Emerson was coming and on lap 12, Trent Jeanes would spin out in turn 3. On the restart, Emerson would try to make the pass but would make contact with Murty and take him out forcing Jarod Weepie to run into the mess and bring the yellow to come out. Murty would get to keep his spot meanwhile Emerson would be sent to the tail for questionable driving. Murty would lead the remiaining 3 laps to claim his 2nd feature win of the night. Norman Chesmore, Jerry Miles, Scott Pippert and John Watson would round out the top 5.

Racing continues Sunday Night at the Benton County Speedway with Wrap'd Up Designs and Rich Docekal Farms Night. Gates open at 3 pm, Hot Laps at 4:30 pm and Racing to Follow.

Boone 4/20/13 Recap

Zehm, Roberts, Brown, Murty and Anderson Win at Boone!
By Jeremy Fox

Boone, Iowa (April 20th, 2013) –  Again Mother nature would not play nice this week but that didn't stop the Boone Speedway from Racing. This week the track would be in great shape and would produce two, three, four and even five wide racing through out the night.

Mike Kennedy would jump to early lead in the Mod Lites feature but then the caution would wave on lap 2 for Rick Taylor and Joel Keenan. Kennedy would again remain out front until the next race caution would come out on lap 6 for a couple of cars in turn 2. On this restart thought, Kennedy would lose the lead to Mike Morrill. Morrill look to be going on to the win but Bryan Zehm would chase him down and make the last lap pass to take the win. Morrill would finish 2nd with Kennedy in third. Andy Hennigar and Randy Bryan would finish fourth and fifth.

Brian Miller would grab the early race lead in the IMCA SportMod feature but the caution would wave on lap 4 when Bradlee Clark lost the handle in turn 2 and Rocky Caudle in turn 4. Miller would lead another 2 laps before Randy Roberts would get by on lap 7. The next 2 laps there would be a caution on each one of them but Roberts wouldn't let them bother him as he would take the win. Miller, Tim Love, Daniel Tasler and Cory Rose rounded out the top 5.

IMCA Modified feature saw David Brown full advantage outside front row starting spot as he would take the lead early and apperared to be on to the easy win. A Mid-race caution when his son Kyle Brown, who was running second, would spin around in turn 2 but David Brown wouldn't let that bother him. David Brown would take the win over Shay Woods, Denny Pittman, Randy Havlik and Jimmy Gustin.

In the IMCA Stock Cars it was Jay Schmidt taking the lead but then a caution would come out on lap 2 for Gary Bass in turn 4. Schmidt would pull away again and appeared to be going on to the win until the caution would wave on lap 11 for Michael Bilyeu in turn 4. On the restart, it would be Wayne Gifford getting by Schmidt for the lead. Gifford and Schmidt would battle for the lead meanwhile Damon Murty was making the high side work in his favor as he would power past both of them to grab the lead with 2 laps to go. Murty would go on to take the win over Wayne Gifford and Schmidt. Jerry Gifford appeared to be going on to the the 4th place finish but he would see his machine go up in a puff of smoke that would hand it over to Kevin Balmer. Rod Richards came home in fifth.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Hobby Stocks, Curt Reed would jump to the early lead but the first caution would come out on lap 2. The caution on lap 2 would see the car of Danny Watson go end over end before landing back down and catching fire. Watson would climb and be okay but the car was badly damage meanwhile 3 other cars would also be collected up but they would be able to continue. When the race restart, Reed would resume command but that was short lived as Andrew Burg would grab the lead on lap 5. Burg would only lead 3 laps because the caution would wave just after completing 7th lap. Burg would be passed by Shannon Anderson on the final reastart, Anderson would take the win with Burg in second. Austin Luellen would finish third, Tyler Pickett was fourth and after Curt Reed experience troubles on the final lap it would be Ryan Grochala taking fifth.

Shute, Elliott, Murty, Luellen and Hennigar Win on Opening Night in Boone
By Jeremy Fox

Boone, Iowa (April 13th, 2013) –  A Week after hosting the very successful frostbuster the Boone Speedway would have a dueling match with mother nature and would win as many other local tracks would be forced to cancelled their weekly shows.

Andy Hennigar would lead the entire 15 lap Mod Lite Feature that would go caution free. Josh May would chase him down but end up 2nd with Travis Stensland, Bryan Zehm and Randy Bryan rounding out the top 5.

Cody Knecht would grab the early race lead in the IMCA SportMod feature but as he was getting through the lap traffic the caution would come out on lap 8 when Tim Rupp would spin around in turns 3 and 4. Knecht would have to deal with Boone's Eric Elliott and that he would. Elliott would make the move and pass for the lead on lap 13. Knecht wouldn't give up but it was Elliott taking the win in his new dirt boss chassis sport mod. Knecht finished 2nd, Joel Rust was 3rd, Geoff Olson was 4th and Ty Luellen was 5th.

IMCA Modified feature would see Todd Shute grab the lead but just after one lap was completed the caution would come out. Shute would again get a great start and pull away until lap traffic would slow him down just a bit but just as it appeared he was going to have an easy win the caution would wave on lap 14 when Jacob Murray would experience troubles and take it too the infield. Shute wouldn't let that bother him as he would lead the remaining 6 laps to take the win. Jimmy Gustin, Jon Snyder, Russ Dickerson and Mike Albertsen would round out the top 5.

In the IMCA Stock Cars it was Cory Bushnell leading the first six laps before Damon Murty would sneak by and take the lead on lap 7. Murty would take the win with Bushnell in 2nd, Trent Murphy was 3rd, Donavon Smith was 4th and Wayne Gifford was 5th.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Hobby Stocks, Austin Luellen grabbing the early lead and it appeared he would be crusining on to the easy win before Austin Hauswirth would chase him down and battle for the lead. Hauswirth would grab the lead by a slight advantage on lap 9, 10 and 11 but it would be Luellen sneaking back by to grab the win. Hauswirth would end up a very close 2nd. Shannon Anderson, Mike Pruitt and back out of semi retirement Matt Sorenson would finish 3rd through 5th.

The Boone Speedway will resume Saturday April 20th with another night of racing. Pits Open at 2p, Grandstands at 3p, Hot Laps at 4p and Racing at 5p for the remaining racing events in the month of April before returning to its normal times.

Richie Gustin Takes The Money in Vinton!

Richie Gustin Takes Top Spot at Benton County Speedway
By Jeremy Fox

Vinton, Iowa (April 7th, 2013) – Seems everytime Richie Gustin signs into race at the Benton County Speedway, he always seems to have bad draws and have a little work ahead for him but the outcome is always the same a trip to victory lane.

Scott Hogan redrew the pole and he would take advantage of it by grabbing the early lead but just after the completion of lap one the caution would wave three times.

When the race resumed it was again Hogan dominating until he got into heavy lap traffic this would allow Jeff Waterman, thirteenth place starter Richie Gustin and the 20th  lap.  A lap later the caution would wave again but Hogan would not be able to get back by Gustin and a couple of laps later would again bobble that before sliding off the topside of turn 3 to bring the caution out with four laps to go.

Gustin would lead the remaining laps to take the win over Auringer, Waterman, Kyle Brown and Patrick Flannagan.

In the IMCA Stock Cars it was Damon Murty taking full advantage of his outside front row starting spot despite three early cautions in the feature. Murty would go on to take the win, Matt Junio from Wisconsin was 2nd. Tyler Smith, Rookie Scott Pippert and Norman Chesmore rounded out the top 5.

IMCA Sport Mod feature saw Clint Luellen, who is a regular at the Stuart Speedway on Sundays, jumping to lead. Luellen wouldn’t give up the lead even after 3 cautions within the final five laps. Luellen would take the win a day after his birthday and it was really impressive when he lost his left rear spring sometime around the final caution. Danny Dvorak, Austin Moyer, Austin Kaplan would finish second through fourth respectively.

Kyle Parizek would take the early lead in the IMCA Hobby Stocks feature. On lap four the race would come to a halt as Matt Brown would go for a spill in turn 3. When the race resumed it was again Parizek taking control but that would be short lived as Shannon Anderson would grab the race lead away on lap 8. Anderson would go on to take his first ever win at the Benton County Speedway. Benji Irvine would take 2nd, Brian Happel was 3rd, Nick Murty was 4th and Austin Luellen was 5th.

Nathan Chandler would lead all 12 laps in the IMCA Sport Compacts feature. Craig Bangert finish 2nd, Bill Whalen was 3rd, Merv Chandler and Steve Miedke rounded out the top 5.

Southern Iowa Speedway Frostbuster will be made up this Wednesday Night.

Weekly Points get underaway next sunday at the Benton County Speedway.

Cale Sponsler jumped into the early lead and looking to be cruising on to the win until lap traffic would start getting in the way. This would allow Defending Track Champion and Former Super Nationals Winner Jimmy Gustin to chase him down and start doing battle with Sponsler.

Gustin almost grabbed the lead when the yellow flag came out on lap fourteen for Jay Noteboom loosing the handle in turn turn 2. However on the restart, Gustin would not give up trying to get by Sponsler and would finally complete the pass on lap 16. Gustin would go on to take the win after having 2 bad nights in Des Moines and Marshalltown but tonight would be rich night as he also won the Harris Auto Racing King of the Hill so total Gustin walked with $1,500.

Sponsler finished second meanwhile Horicon, Wisconsin’s Jeremy Christians was third. Mike Van Genderen and Luke Wanninger rounded out the top 5.

In the IMCA Stock Cars it was Craig Carlson leading the first 9 laps but on the 10th lap he would have something break forcing his car to come to a rest on the frontstretch, this would hand the lead over to LeGrand, Iowa Driver Dustin Vis. Vis would lead until Mike Goldsberry would take the lead away on lap 15 but his lead would be short lived as Wayne and Jerry Gifford would make it a four car battle for the top spot. Wayne Gifford would get by and take the lead on lap 17 and go on to take the victory. Goldsberry came home second, Jerry Gifford was 3rd. Michael Murphy  would get by Vis for fourth.

IMCA Sport Mod feature saw Jared Hansen from Audubon jump to the early race lead and he was pulling away until just before halfway he started getting in to the lap traffic this would allow Ty Luellen, Andy Tiernan and Rocky Caudle to catch up. Tiernan would grab second and then make the move on Hansen on lap 13 to take the lead. The only race caution came out for debris on lap 17 and this would set up for an exciting finish. Tiernan would hold off any challenges from Hansen to take the win. Hansen, Luellen, Caudle and Cory Rose rounded out the top 5.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Hobby Stocks and before one lap could be completed the red flag would wave as Jason Kohl would roll off the top side of turn 3, Kohl would climb from the car okay. When the feature got going it was run 15 laps caution free and it was Trevor Holm leading every lap to take the win. Shane Slezak, Tyler Pickett, Shawn Slezak and Richard Yaw II finished second through fifth.

Final night of the Frostbuster is at the Benton County Speedway in Vinton.

The Boone Speedway will get underway with weekly track points next Saturday Night April 13th.
