Marshalltown, Iowa (August 30th,  2013) – The regular season ended on Friday Night at the Marshalltown Speedway with the Larry Wollam Season Championships. It's a night we honor great promotor, car owner and supporter of the speedway that lost his battle to cancer 14 years ago. One driver visitied victory lane for the first time in his career.

John Gill lead the entire ten lap IMCA Sport Compacts feature to claim his first career feature win. Gill said he was going to retire the car at the end of the season after building the car 11 years ago. Chad Larson finished in the runner up position meanwhile Adam Gates came home third despite missing a left rear wheel. Josh Keller finished fourth and 2013 Track Champion Merv Chandler came home fifth.

In the Toby K’s Hideaway Mod Lites saw Josh May take the challenge to go the tail that moved Randy Bryan to the pole. Bryan lead the first five laps before Dusty Masolini snuck by on lap six. Masolini went on take the victory in the feature that went green-to-checkered, for Masolini that was win number two at MoTown this season. Track Champion Josh May came home 2nd, Bryan was 3rd, Charlie Brown was 4th and Mike Morrill was 5th.

Track Point Leader Bill Bonnett accepted the challenge to go to the tail in the Mike's Hard Lemonade IMCA Hobby Stocks feature. That put Garrett Eilander and Eric Stanton on the front row. Stanton grabbed the lead and never looked back to take the feature win. Eric Larson, Garrett Eilander, Gary Pfantz and Scott Durlin rounded out the top five.

The Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Sport Mods feature saw Joel Rust took the challenge of going to the tail. Jenae Gustin moved to the outside front row and she took advantage by grabbing the lead and appear to be heading to the victory but the first race caution came out on lap eight when Brandon Brinton lost the handle. Gustin remained out front but Travis Peterson and Eric Elliott right behind her. Gustin lost the lead away on lap 14 when Peterson snuck by and four laps later Gustin exited to the pit area with troubles after coming a rest for no power. Peterson lead the remaining laps to take the win. Hardcharging Joel Rust found his way up to the runner up position. Jayme Duinink finished third, Track Champion Eric Elliott was fourth and Johnathan Logue was fifth.

Jay Schmidt came into the night as the point leader and took full advantage starting on the pole by leading the first four laps in the Amsoil IMCA Stock Cars feature. Just after the completion of lap one the caution came out. On the restart, Truman grabbed the top spot away but Truman and Hulin swapped the lead a several times over the next few laps, that opened the door for Luke Wanninger to sneak by just before the final caution on lap eight. Wanninger lead the remaining laps to take the win. Jon Snyder worked his way up to finish second and claim his 2nd track title in three years at MoTown by one point. Richie Gustin finished home third, Ronn Lauritzen finish fourth and Clayton Christensen finish fifth.

Wieben and Droste Takes First Win at MoTown on Johnny Ray’s Night
By Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (August 23rd,  2013) – From the drop of the green to the finish of the night there was great three, four and sometimes five wide racing, every fan in attendance definitely got their money worth. A couple of youngster in Sam Wieben and Tyler Droste got their first win of the season at MoTown along with Donavon Smith meanwhile Merv Chandler, Eric Larson and Josh May all repeat. Also a Modified King of the Hill and a Stock Car Australian Pursuit was added to the card.

John Gill lead the opening lap in the IMCA Sport Compacts feature before David Moorman grabbed the lead away on lap two. Moorman and Merv Chandler then battled for the lead with Chandler grabbing it away on lap four. Chandler cruised on to the win and David Moorman finished second. Gill, Chad Larson and Duayne Herb round out the top five.

In the Toby K’s Hideaway Mod Lites it was Charlie Brown grabbing the lead and appeared he was going to take the win until lap traffic slowed him down late in the race and that allowed Josh May, Randy Bryan, Jimmy May and Mike Morrill to chase him down. Josh May grabbed the lead coming to the white flag and went on to take the win. Brown finished second, Bryan was third, Morrill got by Jimmy May for fourth.

Kevin Fee grabbed the lead in the Mike’s Hard Lemonade IMCA Hobby Stocks feature but again lap traffic become a problem late in the race. This set up a very exciting final three laps as the lap car spun in front of Fee resulting in Fee spinning in turn two. Brice Udelhoven took the lead on lap ten when that happen on the last lap Udelhoven made contact with Eric Stanton and Garrett Eilander had no where to go. Stanton kept going and raced Eric Larson to the checkered, Larson got the win with Stanton in second. Benji Irvine, Bill Bonnett and Austin Luellen finished third through fifth.

Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel IMCA Modifieds saw David Brown lead the first four laps before a caution waved when Ronn Lauritzen and Luke Wanninger got together in turn one. On the restart it was Tyler Droste grabbing the lead away. Droste and the field saw the caution wave again for debris on lap twelve but Droste was not to be denied even after a challenge from Cayden Carter. Droste beat Cayden Carter to the checkered, Lauritzen came back up to finish third, Randy Havlik was fourth and Dan Chapman was fifth.

Before a single lap was completed in the Amsoil IMCA Stock Cars feature the caution waved but once the race got going it was Derek Reimer grabbing the early lead. Reimer lead even when the caution waved again after two laps was completed. Reimer however saw Steve Meyer and Scott Pippert right behind him and Meyer grabbed the lead away on lap five. Meanwhile Donavon Smith worked his way up through the field after starting twelveth. Smith grabbed the lead away on lap nine and took the win. Brian Irvine worked his way from eleventh to second. Meyer was third, Reimer was fourth and Damon Murty was fifth.

The Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Sport Mods feature saw Neil Follett lead the first lap before Sam Wieben grabbed the lead away on lap two. Wieben seem so calm out front despite the cautions coming out. First caution came out on lap four when Gatlin Leytham lost the handle in turn one. Wieben held off Follett and Jared Van Deest on the restart as he did again on the restart after the cautions on lap five, twelve and fourteen. Wieben went on to take his first win of the season at MoTown. Shawn Albers got his best finish by coming home in the runner-up spot. Van Deest was third, Ben Kates was fourth and Joel Rust, who was involved in the caution on lap five worked his way back up to finish fifth.

The IMCA Modifieds ran a King of the Hill just like the Stock Cars did the week before and it was Cayden Carter, Kyle Brown and Ronn Lauritzen winning the first round. Cayden Carter beat Kyle Brown to advance on to the final to face Ronn Lauritzen. Lauritzen cashed in the extra hundred dollars to win the King of the Hill.

Final event of the night was the Stock Car Australian Pursuit, which is if you are passed you are eliminated. Curt Hook started out front but was passed by Brian Irvine. Damon Murty started fifth and passed Michael Jaennette and Scott Pippert on lap two eliminating them. Irvine lead all eight laps to take the win meanwhile Murty finish second and Steve Meyer end up third.

Oskaloosa, Iowa (August 21st, 2013) –  Its been two weeks since  racing action took place at the Southern Iowa Speedway and three weeks since the last weekly track points night. On Wednesday night, the speedway returned to action and one driver got a victory on his birthday.

After the heat races there was a Battle of the Classes with the Late Models, Modifieds, Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks and Sport Mods each having two cars out on track spread out around the track.Late Models had to go 6 laps, Modifieds 5.5 laps, Sport Mods 5.2 laps, Stock Cars 5 laps and Hobby Stocks 4.5 laps. Justin Hook took the win and Steve Allen finished second but if there was another lap they might not have since Damon Murty, a Stock Car and Late Models of Nick Marolf and Spencer Diercks were coming.

In the Pyramid Graphics and Sports IMCA Sport Mods feature it was AJ Johnson grabbing the lead just like he did three weeks ago this time the caution waved on lap three when Bill Livezey experienced troubles in turn two. Johnson got a great restart but on lap four the caution waved when Tony Johnson made contact with Brett Lowry in turn four sending Lowry around. AJ Johnson continued to lead until Carter VanDenBerg made his way up to grab the top spot away on lap eight. VanDenBerg lead the remaining laps to take the win over AJ Johnson, Brett Lowry, Logan Anderson and Eric Flander.

Brad Pinkerton once again grabbed the lead early in the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car feature and appeared to heading on to the win until fellow friend Zack Vanderbeek worked his way through the field. Vanderbeek chased down Pinkerton and made the pass on the last lap to take the win on his birthday. Pinkerton finished runner up again, Damon Murty was third, Todd Reitzler and Bill Osbahr rounded out the top five.

Just as the first lap was completed in the KBOE Radio IMCA Late Models feature, Paul Glendenning spun on the front stretch forcing the yellow. Darrel DeFrance lead that lap and the remaining laps despite the caution coming out on lap thirteen when Spencer Diercks spun in turn four. Murty Sweeps on Central Iowa Snowmobile Night in MoTown

Murty Sweeps on Central Iowa Snowmobile Night in MoTown
By Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (August 16th, 2013) – After amazing show on Tuesday Night the speedway track prep team had three days to get the track in shape for some more racing and they did that. They were racing three, four and five wide from the start of the race to the finish of the race. Nobody went home disappointed as there was also a Stock Car King of the Hill.

John Gill lead the first five laps before Merv Chandler grabbed the lead away on lap six in the IMCA Sport Compacts feature. Chandler went on to take the win with Gill finishing second. Chad Larson was third and Danielle Webster ended up fourth.

Toby K’s Hideaway Mod Lites feature saw Mike Kennedy lead the first two laps before Charlie Brown grabbed the lead away. Brown looking to pull away but on lap eight, Brown had a slip of the grip that allowed Dusty Masolini to sneak into the lead. Masolini held off challenges by Josh May and Andy Hennigar to take the win. May finished second with Hennigar in third. Randy Bryan and Mike Kennedy rounded out the top five.

Jennifer Hulin grabbed the early lead in the Mike’s Hard Lemonade IMCA Hobby Stocks feature but the caution waved after the completion of lap two for Jonathan Juett and Keith Miner getting together. When the race resumed it was Eric Larson battling with Hulin, Larson grabbed the lead away on lap four. Larson lost the lead two laps later to Eric Stanton. Stanton pulled away and went on to take his fourth win of the season at MoTown. John Watson worked his way up from his 10th starting position to finish second. Bill Bonnett finish third after starting 9th, Kevin Fee finish fourth after starting twelve th and Jennifer Hulin ended up fifth.

In the Amsoil IMCA Stock Car feature saw Robbie Merkle lead the opening lap but it was Justin Temeyer taking the spot away on lap two. Temeyer looked to be pulling away but the caution waved on lap five for Nick Thelen in turn two. Temeyer had Damon Murty and Merkle on his back bumper and he got a great restart but the caution waved again just after the completion of lap six when Adam Rickett found his car facing the wrong way on the front straightaway. Temeyer was unable to pull away this time as Murty, Merkle, Derek Reimer and Steve Meyer. Temeyer and Meyer got together on lap eight forcing the yellow to come out. This handed the lead over to Damon Murty and Murty lead through the caution on the restart and then again on lap fifteen. Murty took the win with Jay Schmidt finishing second. Derek Reimer and Jeff Wollam was third and fourth. Justin Temeyer worked his way back up to finish fifth.

Neil Follett lead the opening lap in the Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Sport Mods feature but shortly after the caution waved when a handful of cars ended up with some troubles. On the restart it was Brandon Brinton grabbing the lead away and Brinton tried to pull away but the caution waved on lap five for Joel Rust having problems and coming to a a stop on the run off road. This allowed the opportunity for Jenae Gustin to get by and Gustin pulled away. Gustin grabbed her second win of the season, first since opening night. Paul Nagle finish in the runner up position, teammate Brandon Brinton was third, Jayme Duinink was fourth and Matt Lettow worked his way from nineteenth to fifth.

The Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel IMCA Modifieds feature saw the initial start called back but once the racing got going it was Scott Simatovich grabbing the early lead. Simatovich lead until the caution waved on lap five when Racer Hulin spun in turn one. Ronn Lauritzen powered by Simatovich on the restart but shortly after the lap was completed the caution waved again. Lauritzen again got a great restart and just after the half way point the caution waved again. This time, Lauritzen had to deal with Jon Snyder and Simatovich. Snyder eventually grabbed the lead away on lap twelve and never looked back. For Snyder that is fifth win of the season at MoTown. Lauritzen, Cayden Carter, Simatovich and Kyle Krampe round out the top five.

Final even of the night was the Stock Car King of the Hill and it was Damon Murty, Jay Schmidt and Justin Temeyer winning the first round. Temeyer advanced to the finals as Murty and Schmidt battled it out. Murty won and faced Temeyer in the final but it was Murty completing the sweep on the night.

Utter Wins KMJ Performance Miller Lite 50 at the Marshalltown Speedway

Utter Wins KMJ Performance Miller Lite 50 at the Marshalltown Speedway
By Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (August 13th,  2013)
– Speedway return back to action on Tuesday Night with the inaugural visit for the Corn Belt Clash Late Models at the high banked quarter mile. Also on the card was the ever so popular Mod Lites and IMCA Sport Mods.

The Corn Belt Clash Late Models saw Chad Simpson earn the pole for the feature by winning the  QuickCar Racing Products Quick Six presented by Pro Power Racing Engines and Grove Automotive Dash. Before a lap could be completed though in the 50 lapper the caution waved when Charlie McKenna spun in turn two. When the race got started it was Chad Simpson out jumping Jason Jaggers, Jason Utter and Chris Simpson.

Chad Simpson continued to lead but lap traffic started to become a problem on lap eleven and allowed Utter to chase down Chad Simpson. Utter was able to sneak by as lap traffic was slowing down Simpson on lap thirty-eight. Just after Utter took the lead the caution waved for Rick Wendling losing the handle in turn one and then again on the restart when Mike Fryer spun in turn one and for a piece of debris in turn two.  Utter lead the remaining twelve laps to take the win and the $3,000 pay check that went along with it. Chad Simpson was second, Dave Eckrich was third, Chris Simpson was fourth and Justin Mitchell beat Jaggers to the line for the fifth spot.

Jeff Stensland driving a car normally driven by DJ Schmalzried, grabbed the lead in the Toby K’s Hideaway Mod Lites feature on lap one but it was Jimmy May taking the lead away on lap two. May lead through a caution on lap six when Charlie Brown lost the handle in turn two. May knew Andy Hennigar and Mike Morrill was coming but it was Hennigar that grabbed the lead away on lap eleven meanwhile Morrill shuffled back. Hennigar went on to take the victory with Jimmy May in second, Dusty Masolini in third, Jeff Stensland came home in fourth and Mike Morrill was fifth.

In the Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Sport Mods feature it was Jenae Gustin grabbing the early lead but caution waved on lap six for debris in turn three. On the restart, Gustin had her hands full and lost the lead on lap eight to Doug Smith from Lake City. Smith held the lead through a pair of cautions on lap eleven and thirteen. Smith took the win over Joel Rust, Curtis VanDerWal, Jenae Gustin and Carter VanDenBerg.

Its back to racing on Friday Night as it will be Marshalltown Snowmobile Club Night at the Races. Grandstands are $9 for Adults, Children 11 and under is $2. Hot Laps at 7 pm and Racing at 7:30 pm.

Brown Takes Win at Front Row Challenge

First time ever i made the trip to the Musco Lighting Front Row Challenge presented by Casey's General Stores for the ASCS Sprint Cars because i was asked to run the scoreboard for Jen Turner, who had a prior commitment to score the Hawkeye Dirt Tour Races at the Independence Motor Speedway, I had fun and enjoyed it. Thanks to Jen for asking me to fill in for her, Thanks to Terry and Lori McCarl for letting me do i had a blast.

After 6 heats, 2 b-features and a king of the hill settled the starting line up it was time to go 30 laps in the Front Challenge. Before a lap could be completed the caution waved when Kevin Swindell came to a stop in turn two. When the race fired up it was local driver Tasker Phillips grabbing the lead from his pole position after choosing to not take the challenge.

Phillips continued to lead through a caution on lap nine for Mike Houseman Jr. coming to a stop on the backstretch. Phillips still manage to hold off any challengers when the next caution came out on lap twelve. Phillips looked so calm out front and held off any challenges from Tony Shilling, Tony Stewart, Brian Brown, Jason Johnson and Kyle Larson.

Stewart finally caught up to Phillips and grabbed the lead away on lap twenty-two. However just after the completion of lap twenty-five the red flag came out when Stewart made contact with a lap car in turn four that saw him go for a tumble. Stewart was taken to a near by hospital for further observation where it was deteremined he broke his leg and need surgery. Meanwhile Phillips, Shilling and Higday all would be involved and Jason Johnson experienced a flat tire.

On the restart the top five was Brian Brown, Kyle Larson, Kevin Swindell, Brandon Wimmer and Tim Crawley. Brown lead the remaining laps to take the win. Larson finished 2nd after starting 18th because he had to come from a b-main. Swindell came home in third after going to the back after a quick fix on the initial caution. Wimmer was fourth and meanwhile Tony Bruce Jr. chose to go to the tail and get $85 per car he passed found his way in fifth.

Side Note:

We all know the risk of racing when we sign in as a driver, crew, fan or official but to say a driver shouldn't do what he or she loves to do is wrong......Since last night that is all i have heard or read about how they shouldn't do what they love because they are in NASCAR!

Brown was out front meanwhile Josh May, Andy Hennigar, Dusty Masolini and  Jimmy May raced for position. Finally Josh May chased down Brown and tried to get by even on the last lap but came up short by inches at the line. Brown admitted in victory lane that his car slid up and he had no idea that May was there. Dusty Masolini, Andy Hennigar and Brandt rounded out the top five.

Mike’s Hard Lemonade IMCA Hobby Stocks feature saw Jason Cox grab the lead but the caution waved just after the lead on lap two. Iverson grabbed the lead away from Rust on lap sixteen and held off any challenges from Rust to take the win. Brandon Brinton snuck by Joel Rust on the last lap to grab second. Eric Elliott started twenty-th and finished fourth and Jayme Duinink finish fifth.

Schmidt got a great restart after the cautions on lap four and six and tried to pull away but Murty didn’t let him as he glue to the back bumper. Schmidt and Murty saw the caution come out when Derek Reimer came to a rest on the runner off road forcing a three lap finish. Whalen, Hughes, VanDerWal, Vanderbeek and Dickey Takes Victories on 1st Community Credit Union Night
By Jeremy Fox

Oskaloosa, Iowa (July 31st, 2013) –  Another night where the weather was absolutely beautiful and the racing was great. Fans in attendance also got some added attraction with a King of the Hill in both the Stock Cars and Modifieds plus some Wheelbarrow Races.

In the Stock Car King of the Hill it was Jason Cook, Zack Vanderbeek and Damon Murty all taking first round wins. Murty had the most wins in the first round so he advantage to the finals and had a rematch with Vanderbeek, who beat Cook in the semifinal. Vanderbeek got revenge on Murty in the finals and take the win, Vanderbeek won a new Hoosier tire.

Modified King of the Hill was swept by Bill Davis Jr. as he claimed five wins by beating Bill Gibson, Andrew Schroeder, Todd Shute, Cayden Carter and Tyler Groenendyk. Davis got a brand new Hoosier tire for his efforts.

Meanwhile right after that wheel barrow races happened and it was Scott Dickey and Brayton Carter winning in the final over Rich Vogt and Todd Shute. Dickey and Carter will receive a free pit pass when the speedway returns with weekly racing on August 21st.

First feature of the night was the IMCA Sport Compacts feature and it was Trent Orwig grabbing the lead on the opening lap. Orwig’s lead was short lived as on lap two he experience troubles and came to a stop in turn four, this handed the lead over John Whalen. Whalen held off several challenges through the remaining laps from Shawn Cooney to take the win. It was Whalen’s third of the season at SIS and it gives him the points lead as Merv Chandler and Bill Whalen Jr. didn’t compete on the night. Cooney came home in the runner-up position, Matt Moore finish third and Trent Orwig was fourth.

Steve Allen grabbed the lead early in the Pepsi Cola IMCA Hobby Stocks feature but Dustin Griffiths worked his way into second on lap 2. Griffiths set his sights and trying to get by and race side by side with Allen until lap six when it was Griffiths grabbing the lead. Griffith saw Bill Bonnett follow suit and then Mike Hughes. Hughes was on a mission as he grabbed second away from Allen and Bonnett on lap ten and then grabbed the lead away on lap twelve. Hughes went on to take his fifth win of the season at Osky. Griffiths, Bonnett, Allen and Aaron Osweiler rounded out the top five.

In the Pyramid Graphics and Sports IMCA Sport Mods feature it was AJ Johnson grabbing the lead but on lap four, Johnson slid up the race track and open the bottom side for Brayton Carter, Carter snuck by and then shortly after the yellow waved when Logan Anderson hit a tractor tire in turn two while running third. On the restart, Leroy Groenendyk had a slip of the grip in turn two. Carter remained out front until his cousin Carter VanDenBerg grabbed the top spot away on lap nine. Carter and VanDenBerg race for the lead until lap twelve when the red flag came after Carter made contact with a tractor tire that sent him rolling, Carter was okay but ended his run. VanDenBerg had to deal with Curtis VanDerWal, Eric Flander and Brett Lowry on the restart. VanDerWal made the right move and grabbed the top spot away on lap fourteen and cruised on to win number eight at his hometown track. VanDenBerg came home in second, Lowry came across in third but was disqualified in post-race tech so that handed third over to Flander. Tyler Heckard and AJ Johnson rounded out the top five.

Final feature of the night was the Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds feature and before a single lap could be completed the caution waved when Tyler Groenendyk and Jacob Murray spun in turn one. When the race got going it was Scott Dickey grabbing the lead and even after a debris caution on lap three it was all over. Dickey took the win with Todd Shute in second, Cayden Carter in third, Brandon Banks in fourth and Bill Davis Jr. in fifth.

Weekly Racing will now take a couple of weeks off because of Sprint Week and the State Fair and return on Wednesday Night August 21st for Support American Farmers Night plus the final night for the IMCA Late Models. Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing at 7:30pm.
