Stanton, Gustin, Schmidt and Larson Win Thrillers on Minute Man Printing Night at MoTown
By Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (May 30th, 2014) –  There is no place better to be on Friday Nights then the Marshalltown Speedway as everybody was on the edge of their seats all night long. Thrilling finish in four out of six feature events on Minute Man Printing Night.

For the second week in a row the 18 lap IMCA Northern SportMods feature was a thriller. Chad Ryerson lead the first three laps before the caution came out twice. On the restart, Ryerson saw Ryan King take the lead. King saw Jenae Gustin take the top spot on lap six. Gustin continued to lead until the caution came out on lap ten. On the restart, Gustin saw King, Clint Luellen, Carter VanDenBerg and Sam Wieben but Gustin held on to the lead on lap 11 only to see Luellen take the lead away on lap 12. Gustin, Luellen and VanDenBerg began to have a three car battle for the top spot but Luellen maintained the lead until the last lap when Gustin would take the lead back for her second win of the season at Motown. VanDenBerg beat Luellen to the line for second meanwhile Wieben was fourth and Jared Van Deest was fifth.

"Class To Tough To Tame" IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature did not disappoint any one as it was exciting from the drop of the green to the checkered. Don Vis led the opening lap before Jay Schmidt took the lead away on lap two. Schmidt led through the cautions on lap eight and ten but the caution on lap 13 would set up a good one. Schmidt saw Donavon Smith and Steve Meyer right behind him on the restart, Smith worked the bottom side and took the lead coming to two to go. Schmidt took it back when Smith bobble just a bit and he held of Smith to take his first win at Motown this season. Meyer ended third, Michael Jaennette tried to join the fun but finish fourth and Jeff Wollam was fifth.

Rookies Jake Strayer and Brandon Leeman battled up front in the opening laps for the IMCA Modified 20 lap feature. Strayer lead until lap six before Adam Larson took the lead away. Larson appeared to be heading on to the easy race win and the only thing that slowed him down was lap traffic. On the last lap though Larson jumped the cushion allowing Luke Wanninger to chase him down, Wanninger tried to make a move coming to the checkered but it did not work as Larson took the win. Joel Rust, Brandon Leeman and Jon Snyder rounded out the top five.

David Moorman led all eight laps in the IMCA Sport Compacts. John Gill in 2nd, Aaron Miller in 3rd and Douglas Byers in 4th.

Mod Lites 15 lap feature saw Mike Kennedy lead the first two laps before Travis Brandt took the lead away. Brandt and the field saw the caution come out twice on lap four but that did not faze him. Brandt continued to lead until Charlie Brown took the lead away on lap eight. Just after the completion the caution came out for the final time. Brown managed to pull away and take the win over Andy Hennigar, Mike Morrill, Brandt and Randy Bryan.

In the IMCA Hobby Stocks 12 lap feature, it was Rookie Andy Hick leading lap one. Just after the completion of that lap, Brice Udelhoven, Austin Luellen and Steve Fricke got together in turn two. Hick appeared to be no rookie as he got a great restart but some Eric Stanton chase him down and was able to take the lead with one to go. Stanton went on to take the win meanwhile John Watson finished second. Hick, Gary Pfantz and Last Week's Winner Dustin Elliott finish third through fifth respectively.

Next Week the race track is busy because there is racing on Tuesday Night and Friday Night. First on Tuesday is the return of the United States Modified Touring Series plus Iron Man Challenge Series for USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods. Hot Laps at 7:00 p.m. and Racing to Follow.

Oskaloosa, Iowa (May 28th, 2014) – Wednesday Night began with a moment of silence for a long time fan of the Southern Iowa Speedway, Jeffrey Groenenboom. It looked great for racing all day for Fan Appreciation Night sponsored by Slideways Karting Center, Nutz Graphix And Vinyl LLC and Yaw's Auto Salvage. During intermission fans saw heat winners race go karts from Slideways Karting Center however mother nature spoiled that fun.

First feature of the night was in the IMCA Hobby Stocks and it was Brad Stephens taking the early lead meanwhile Mike Hughes worked his way in to second by lap two. Hughes began to battle with Stephens for the lead and would take it away on lap five. Hughes appeared to be heading on to the win before the caution came out on lap 13 for Dustin Griffiths and Danny Thrasher in turn four. On the restart, Hughes saw Stephens and Craig Brown on the back bumper, Brown took second and then took the lead on the last lap when Hughes cut his right rear tire, he came home in 12th. Brown took the win with Brad Stephens in second, Nick Ulin was third, Kevin Fee was fourth and Jared Stephens was fifth.

In the Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds 15 lap feature, it was Scott Dickey taking the early lead. Dickey lead until Jesse Sobbing was able to grab the lead away on lap five. Donnie Pearson led the first two laps in the Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature before the caution came out when Nathan Wood would get into the outside fence in turn three. Pearson on the restart had to contend with Damon Murty and Corey Stout. Murty took the lead away on lap four and look to be pulling away only to see the caution come out on lap 11 for Pearson in turn two. Murty saw Corey Stout and Cayden Carter on his back bumper. Carter worked his way to second on lap 12 and took the lead away from Murty on lap 13. Carter went on to take the win and Zack Vanderbeek made the pass on Murty with two to go to take second. Stout was fourth and Donavon Nunnikhoven was fifth.

Final Feature of the night was KBOE Radio IMCA Northern Sport Mods 30 lap Special. Luellen Wins a Thriller on Midwest Liquid Systems Salute to Military Night

Luellen Wins a Thriller on Midwest Liquid Systems Salute to Military Night
By Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (May 23rd, 2014) –  Finally if felt like May on Friday Night at the Marshalltown Speedway but the racing action seemed more like July and August. One driver picked up his first win in five years, another one picked up his third in a row and four others picked up their second win of the season.

The feature of the night was the 18 lap IMCA Northern SportMods main event. Neil Follett led the first two laps before the caution came out for debris in turn three, which turned out to be a spring that came off Follett's car. Follett pulled to the infield after oil was leaking from his car that handed the lead over to Jenae Gustin. Gustin continued to lead until the caution came out on lap eight. This put Carter VanDenBerg and Clint Luellen on the back side of Gustin, those three battled it out for the lead. Gustin and the field again saw the caution be displayed on lap 11. The last seven laps saw amazing three car dog fight involving Gustin, VanDenBerg and Luellen. Luellen grabbed the lead away on lap 13 by running the high side but Gustin powered back on lap 14. Gustin and VanDenBerg battled the bottom meanwhile Luellen again powered back on the outside to take the lead coming to the white flag. Luellen edged out VanDenBerg at the line for his second consective win meanwhile VanDenBerg finished 2nd, Gustin was 3rd, Jared VanDeest was 4th and Travis Peterson was fifth.

Jimmy May led the first couple of laps in the Mod Lites feature before Andy Hennigar took the top spot away on lap three. The only thing that kept Hennigar on his toes was the cautions on lap nine and 13. Hennigar held off the challenges from Josh May to take the win. Mike Morrill was third, Charlie Brown was fourth and Jimmy May was fifth.

In the IMCA Hobby Stocks 12 lap feature, it was Dustin Elliott grabbing the lead and despite a pair of cautions on lap three nothing seemed to be denying Elliott the win. The win would be Elliott's first win since April 24th, 2009. Jennifer Hulin had her best finish with a second place. Tyson Overton, Brice Udelhoven and Austin Luellen rounded out the top five.

The "Class To Tough To Tame" IMCA Stock Cars saw Michael Jaennette take the lead on lap one in the 18 lap feature event. Right after though the caution came out when Chuck Davis spun around in turn four. Jaennette began to pull away but behind there was some great battles involving several cars. Jaennette and the field saw the caution come out twice on lap 12 setting up a shootout to the finish and it would be that as Donavon Smith, Jay Schmidt, Steve Meyer, Trent Murphy and Jeff Wollam was all right there. Smith and Jaennette made contact on lap 15 which allowed him to take the lead away. Smith went on to take his third consective win at MoTown. Jaennette came home 2nd, Murphy finished 3rd, Schmidt was 4th and Meyer in 5th.

Joel Bushore led the first two laps in the 20 lap IMCA Modified feature before the caution came out for Brandon Leeman in turn two. On the restart, Bushore saw Luke Wanninger take the lead away. Wanninger led through the catuion on lap six to take his second win of the season. Adam Larson moved up eight spots to finish second. Ronn Lauritzen worked his way up from 12th to third, Kyle Brown was fourth and Joel Rust was fifth.

David Moorman returned to victory lane by leading all eight laps in the IMCA Sport Compacts feature. Aaron Miller ran second the entire way meanwhile John Gill was third and 14 year old Jacob Reiter ended home in fourth after he experience transmission problems early in the race.

Next Friday Night, the race track wraps up May with Minute Man Printing Night at the races. Hot Laps at 6:45 p.m. and Racing at 7:30 p.m.

Then on Tuesday Night June 3rd, it will be the return of the USMTS and Iron Man Challenge Series for Stock Cars and B-Mods. Hot Laps at seven pm and Racing to Follow.

Smith Wins a Thriller and Luellen Brothers Double Up on Old Timers Lounge Night

Smith Wins a Thriller and Luellen Brothers Double Up on Old Timers Lounge Night
By Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (May 16th, 2014) –  It felt like early April and not like the middle of May on Friday Night at the Marshalltown Speedway. That did not stop a 106 race cars to sign in to do battle on Casey's General Stores and Old Timers Lounge Night.

The feature of the night was the no surprise but the Class to Tough To Tame also known as the IMCA Stock Cars. Nate Thelen and Robbie Merkle led the first two laps but just after the completion of lap two, Merkle spun in turn two collecting a few other cars. Don Vis inherited the lead but it was short lived as Steve Meyer took the lead away on lap three. Meyer bobbled and that allowed Michael Jaennette to sneak by. Jaennette began to pull away only to see the caution come out just after the completion of lap nine. Jaennette had to contend with Brian Irvine and Meyer but it was Donavon Smith taking the lead away on lap 13. Smith led until lap 16 when Irvine got by but Irvine slipped up and let Smith get back by to take the win. Meyer also got by Irvine for second at the line, Trent Murphy was fourth and Scott Pippert was fifth.

Jake Strayer led the first two laps in the IMCA Modifieds feature before Racer Hulin took the top spot away. Hulin looked to be cruising to the easy win despite the battle behind him for the rest of the top ten spots. On lap nine the caution came out for Strayer sitting in turn two and Zack Rawlins sitting off the top of turn three after his drive train experiencing issues. Hulin had to try to hold off Luke Wanninger and Richie Gustin, Gustin took the lead away and never looked back in route to the win. Hulin came across in second, Adam Larson worked his way to third, Wanninger fell back to fourth and Rookie Joel Rust was fifth.

Before a lap was completed in the IMCA Northern SportMods 18 lapper, the caution came out. On the restart, it was Neil Follett taking the lead. Follett led until the caution came out again on lap four, Clint Luellen took the lead away on the restart and began to pull away only to see the caution come out four more times on laps nine, 13 and 14. Luellen took the win over Travis Peterson, Carter VanDenBerg, Jared Van Deest and Ryan Ashton.

The Mod Lites saw Terry Brown lead the first lap in the 15 lap feature. Brown had his hands full as the father son team of Josh May and Jimmy May along with Charlie Brown made it a four car battle for the lead. Josh May took the lead away and about the only thing slowing him down was the lap traffic as this feature went green-to-checkered. Charlie Brown, Terry Brown, Joe Glick and Travis Brandt rounded out the top five.

In the IMCA Hobby Stocks 12 lap feature it was Matt Pohlman leading the first four laps before Eric Stanton took it away. Stanton and the field saw the only caution come out just after the halfway point on lap six. Stanton had to battle with Austin Luellen and Matt Pohlman. Stanton left the door open on lap ten which allowed Luellen to sneak on by for the lead. Luellen held on to take the win over Stanton, Pohlman, Brice Udelhoven and John Watson.

John Gill started right where he left off the week before in the IMCA Sport Compacts feature and that was out front. Gill would lead all eight laps to take his second win of the season. David Moorman took the second and Aaron Miller was third.

Next Friday Night, we kick off the Memorial Day Weekend with Midwest Liquid Systems and Salute to Military Night at the Races. It all gets underway with Hot Laps at 6:45 p.m. and Racing at 7:30 p.m.

VanDenBerg, Whalen, Cooney, and Shute Hughes, Vanderbeek Take Victories on Kelderman's Hobby Shack Night

VanDenBerg, Whalen, Cooney, and Shute Hughes, Vanderbeek Take Victories on Kelderman's Hobby Shack Night
By Jeremy Fox

Oskaloosa, Iowa (May 14th, 2014) – Exciting racing along with temperatures 20 to 30 degrees cooler welcomed fans on Farmer's Support American and Kelderman's Hobby Shack Night at the races.

First feature of the night was the KBOE Radio IMCA Northern SportMods feature and it was Jenae Gustin grabbing the early lead. Gustin lost the lead to Carter VanDenBerg on lap three. VanDenBerg look to be pulling away only to see the caution come out on lap six when Tyler Gross got into the tractor tire in the bottom of turn 2. VanDenBerg again began to pull away meanwhile Curtis VanDerWal moved in to the second spot. The caution came out one more time on lap 12 when Ryan Fullenkamp and Corey Van Zante got together in turn two. VanDenBerg went on to take the win becoming the third different weekly winner this season. Brayton Carter finish second, Jason McDaniel was third, VanDerWal fell back to fourth and Gustin came across in fifth.

Next Up was the IMCA Sport Compacts feature, which saw Trent Orwig take the early lead but just after one lap was completed the caution came out for debris in turn one. Orwig and Bill Whalen began to battle for the top spot and it was Whalen getting by. Whalen went on to take his 2nd consective win over Orwig, Larry Hopkins, Matt Moore and John Whalen.

The IMCA Late Models 20 lapper was out next and they were lead to the green by Defending Track Champion Todd Cooney and Tommy Elston. Cooney took advantage and began to pull away. Cooney looked to be taking the easy win but then the caution came out on lap nine when Spencer Diercks took a sharp right turn in to the monster in turns one and two. Cooney had to contend with Colby Springsteen and Nick Marolf the rest of the way but held on to take the win over Springsteen, Marolf, Elston and Kevin Kile.

Only eight Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds were in attendance and it was AJ Johnson taking the early lead. Johnson saw Cayden Carter and Todd Shute sneak by on lap three. Carter and Shute battled it out side by side the next handful of laps before Shute took the lead away on lap nine. Shute picked up his third feature in as many nights at SIS. Carter, Andrew Schroeder, Johnson and Kurt Kile rounded out the top five.

In the Pepsi IMCA Hobby Stocks feature, it was Brandon Cox taking the early lead. Cox's lead was short lived because just after the completion of lap three the red flag came out when Gina Greubel had the left rear axle break and rolled two times in turn one. Gruebel was okay but her night ended meanwhile on the restart, Cox saw Mike Hughes and Brad Stephens on his back bumper. Hughes grabbed the lead away from Cox and Dustin Griffiths moved his way to second spot. Hughes held off challenges from Griffiths even after a caution on lap 12. Hughes took his second win of the season and Griffiths finish 2nd. Nick Ulin, Craig Brown and Cox finished 3rd through 5th respectively.

Saved the best for last because the final feature of the night was the Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars feature. This feature was full of two, three and four wide excitement the entire way. Damon Murty started on the front row and took advantage by taking the lead meanwhile the battles behind him had fans on the edge of their seats. The first caution came out on lap 13 when Corey Stout and Donavon Nunnikhoven got together in turn one. Zack Vanderbeek worked his way into second and set his sights on getting by Murty which he would do when on the restart after a caution on lap 14. Vanderbeek led the remaining four laps to take the win over Murty, Justin Temeyer, Cayden Carter and Kris Walker.

All Six IMCA Divisions including IMCA Late Models, IMCA Modifieds, Stock Cars, Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts will be taking to the half mile next Wednesday Night on Supreme Lawn and Landscaping Night. Hot Laps at 7:00 p.m. and Racing at 7:30 p.m.

Gill, Ceiliski, Brown, Luellen, Lowry, Smith and Wanninger Win on Cliff Chambers Memorial Night

Gill, Ceiliski, Brown, Luellen, Lowry, Smith and Wanninger Win on Cliff Chambers Memorial Night
By Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (May 9th, 2014) –  On Friday Night, it was back to action at the Marshalltown Speedway on UAW 893 Cliff Chambers Memorial Night. The night is in great honor of a pioneer of the speedway that we lost 25 years ago to cancer. There was a lot of great racing all night that included three, four and five wide racing.

First feature on to the speedway was the IMCA Sport Compacts eight lapper. John Gill started on the outside front row and he took advantage by taking the lead.  David Moorman tried several times to get by but just was not going to deny Gill the win. For Gill, it was his first win since season championship night last year. Moorman came across in second, Aaron Miller was third, Jacob Reiter was fourth and Jeremy Stone was fifth.

Always on Cliff Chambers Memorial Night, the Nostalgia Cars pay a visit to the high banked quarter mile. They put on a show of themselves, racing cars from the 1950's and 1960's, and even rubbing fenders. Jim Anderson led the first six laps but it was Roger Ceilsiski taking the lead away on lap seven. Ceilsiski went on to take the win in his 1963 Chevy Nova SS. Anderson came home second, Pudge Grabill was third, Larry Knop was fourth and Scott Jorpeland was fifth.

The Mod Lites saw the caution come out before the completion of lap one in their 15 lap feature. Charlie Brown got a great restart and took the lead on the restart. Lap traffic slowed Brown a little but he was able to hold on to take the win over hard charging Andy Hennigar. Mike Morrill, Jimmy May and Travis Stensland rounded out the top five.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks 12 lap feature also saw a yellow before the completion of lap one. Austin Luellen grabbed the top spot and pulled away but then the caution came out again on lap eight when Andy Hick had his right rear go down forcing him to face the wrong direction on the backstretch. That bunched the field up right behind Luellen and he would not let that faze him as he held off late race challenges from John Watson. Garrett Eilander came home third, Eric Larson was in a close fourth and Eric Stanton in fifth.

Zach McKinnion and Gatlin Leytham led the field to the green in the IMCA SportMods 18 lap feature event. Neither one of them took the early lead, it was Brett Lowry. Lowry saw Carter VanDenBerg take the top spot away on lap three. VanDenBerg pulled away to what appeared to be an easy win until lap traffic slowed him down allowing Lowry to stay close. VanDenBerg came across the line in first but was disqualifed in post-race tech inspection for his ignition box. That gave the win to Lowry and moving up Jenae Gustin to second, Doug Smith to third, Clint Luellen to fourth and Ty Luellen to fifth.

Class to Tough To Tame or better known as the IMCA Stock Cars continue to live up to their name every night. Steve Meyer grabbed the lead early and appeared to be taking the win until the caution came out on lap 11. This forced a seven lap dash to the finish and now Meyer saw Jeff Wollam and Jay Schmidt on his back bumper. Trent Murphy and Donavon Smith also right there and that is where the battle heated up. Smith made the right move with two laps to go, he took the top spot away to take the win. Meyer, Schmidt, Murphy and Wollam rounded out the top five.

The IMCA Modifieds feature was the final feature of the night and it was the rookie Eric Elliott jumping to the lead. Elliott held that lead until lap 14 when Luke Wanninger snuck by him. Wanninger began to pull away but the caution came out forcing a four lap shootout. Wanninger got a great restart and went on to take the win over 10th place starter Joel Rust. Racer Hulin came across in third but was disqualifed in post race tech inspection. Ronn Lauritzen was credited with third place, Elliott with fourth place and Tyler Droste with fifth place.

Next Friday Night all Boy and Girl Scouts are asked to wear their uniforms as it is Scout Night. It is all Casey's General Stores Night at the races. Hot Laps at 6:45 p.m. and Racing at 7:30 p.m.
