Exciting and Thrilling Finishes at Benton County Speedway

Mother Nature was in a good mood on Sunday as the Benton County Speedway in Vinton returned to action on a beautifully sunny day. 108 cars checked in on sunday night to tame the little quarter mile oval on the Benton County Fairgrounds and they produced amazing racing all night long.

Also on hand was Scotty Welsh to hot lap his IMCA Late Model, getting ready for the Sunday series and Adam Streeter to hot lap his Quad, that he was orginally going to race at Marshalltown on Friday before it rained out.

First feature of the night was IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event. After the initial start was called back it was Justin Wacha taking the top spot. Wacha saw the caution come out again on lap two when Leah Wroten spun around in turn four. Wacha on the restart had to contend with opening night winner Nathan Ballard. Ballard was able to make the move and take the lead away on lap five but Wacha did not go away as he stayed close meanwhile Austin Luellen worked his way up and made a good three car battle up front. Ballard held on to take the win over Luellen, Wacha, Benji Irvine and Matt Pohlman.

With 27 IMCA Northern SportMods on hand it was determined to take them all to the feature event which was expanded to 20 laps from the orginally scheduled 16 lap feature. After a caution on the initial start when Jared Van Deest, Matt Petrzelka, Trent Jochimsen and Lee Rouse all got together in turn four. Tony Olson took advantage on the restart from his pole position by taking the early lead and just after two laps were completed the caution came out again when Mike McDonald experienced troubles in turn four. After three laps were completed the caution came out again this for Danny Dvorak. Olson continued to lead but had Clint Luellen knocking on the back bumper. Olson and Luellen got into a heated battle for the lead and it was Luellen taking the top spot on lap six just before a pair of cautions. Luellen continued to lead but lap traffic was getting heavy and that allowed Jenae Gustin, who worked her way through the field to reel down Luellen. Gustin edged out Luellen for the win. Colby Heishman finished third, Damon Murty was fourth and Petrzelka was fifth.

Next up was the 12 lap Legend Cars feature event. Bryce Bailey took the lead in the early going but it was Vince Bartolotta taking the lead away on lap three. The Caution came out on lap six for Austin Slabaugh coming to a stop on the backstretch. Bartolotta was not going to let that bother him as he went on to take the win despite a late race caution on lap ten. Warren Ropp, Matt Montieth, Peeken Schneider and Slabaugh rounded out the top five.

Tristian Cordes started on the pole in the 12 lap Micro Mods feature event and he took advantage early. Just after the caution came out on lap three for Brandon Maitland experiencing troubles on the front stretch. Cordes continued to lead until a caution came out on lap five for Brad Chandler in turn two. On the restart, Cordes saw Matt Post sneak by to take over the lead when Cordes experienced some flat tires. Post lead until lap nine when the final race caution came out for Robby Decker in turn four. Donald Erger took the lead away and went on to take his second of the year at BCS. Buster Pate took second, Post was third, Jeff Davis was fourth and Chandler came back to finish fifth.

After a caution in the 18 lap IMCA Stock Cars feature it was Jared Daggett taking the early lead. Daggett held off Curtis Roster but it was Jay Schmidt taking the lead away on lap five. Schmidt saw fellow Tama County driver Damon Murty right behind him and those two battled it out the remaining distance but it was Murty taking the lead on lap nine. Murty took the win over Schmidt, Scooter Dulin, Norman Chesmore and Jerry Miles.

Final feature of the night was the 20 lap IMCA Modifieds feature and it was Joe Docekal taking the top spot. Docekal was not fazed by trio of early race cautions or was he because on the restart on lap four it was Zach Less taking the lead away. Less kead until Docekal took the lead way on lap ten. Docekal held off any Challenges from Brian Irvine, Patrick Flannagan and Joel Rust. Docekal took the win meanwhile Irvine exited on lap 18 with a broken left front. Flannagan took second with Scott Hogan in third, Kyle Brown in fourth and Less in fifth.

Racing action continues next sunday night at the Benton County Speedway in Vinton and next week they will go back to their normal start times. Gates Open at 4pm, Hot Laps at 6pm with Racing to Follow.

Logue, Schmidt, Bennett, Wieben and May Take Wins in Boone

After the races rained out at Marshalltown on Friday, i sat at home and watched the NASCAR Xfinity Serie race even though i could have made the three hour drive to Donnellson. Saturday Night though i was determined to find a place to watch some racing action after Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City cancelled (I was scheduled to fill in as announcer for Ryan Bergeson) and guess what the umbrella was back in place over the Boone Speedway because after being rained out last Saturday Night it was time for racing in Boone.

140 cars signed in to race at Iowa's Action Track, the Boone Speedway on a very cloudy and chilly Saturday night.

First feature of the night was the 15 lap Mod Lites feature event and it was Jimmy May grabbing the top spot right away and about the only thing slowing him down was a pair of race cautions on lap five and eight. May took the win after experiencing troubles a couple of weeks ago. His son Josh May finished second after passing Cory Dennis. Bryan Zehm was fourth and Joel Keenan was fifth.

Brian Eppert took the lead early in the 18 lap IMCA Northern SportMods feature event but just after the completion of lap one, the caution came out for Brandon Williams sliding off the top of turn three. Eppert continued to lead but the caution came out again on lap six when Tara Longnecker had something break in the rear end of her car that collected Colby Heishman and Daniel Tasler, Heishman and Tasler was able to continue. Eppert's lead this time would be short lived as Sam Wieben worked his way through the field from tenth and was able to take the lead away on lap ten. Wieben took the win despite a caution on lap 13 and then on lap 16. Jonathan Logue started ninth and worked his way to second. Clint Luellen from 11th to third, Randy Roberts was fourth and Ben Wilson was fifth.

Only thing slowing down Solomon Bennett in the 12 lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature was a debris caution on lap two. Bennett took the win  though Andrew Burg caught up to him as the checkered flag flew. Daniel Hagen, Aaron Rudolph and Cody Gustoff rounded out the top five.

In the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature, it was Racing Veteran at Boone John Logue taking advantage of the pole position as he took the top spot early. Shortly after one lap was completed the caution came out for Nick Roberts experiencing troubles and coming to a stop on the front stretch. Logue was not going to let that bother him as he continued to pace his way out front until the caution came out on lap seven for Pat Graham coming to a stop on the front stretch. Logue lead the remaining laps to take the win over Kyle Brown, Russ Dickerson, Jimmy Gustin and Scott Davis.

Final feature of the night was the 18 lap IMCA Stock Cars feature and it was Jay Schmidt leading from start-to-finish with only lap traffic slowing him down. After lap traffic slowed him down, Schmidt had a familiar driver Trent Murphy chasing him down but he held on to take the win just like his "Helping Hanah" team mate Sam Wieben did in the SportMods. Rookie Tyler Pickett was third, Wayne Gifford was fourth and Rod Richards was fifth.

Racing action contiunes next saturday night at the Boone Speedway with normal start times taking place next week. Hot Laps at 6:45pm and Racing at 7:30pm.

Travis Stensland, Jimmy May and Joe Glick rounded out the top five.

Up next was the IMCA Northern SportMods 18 lap feature event and before a lap could be completed the caution came out . When racing got going they were racing three and four wide through the field on lap one, it was Rookie Dusty Masolini taking the lead but just after the completion of lap one the caution came out when Bryan Johnson and Austin Schuring got together in turn four. Masolini got a great restart and appeared to be comfortable in the lead until lap three when he would go around bring out the caution. Jayme Duinink inherited the lead and lead until lap nine. On lap nine, it was Jared Van Deest sneaking up on the high side to take the lead. Van Deest saw the caution come out with two laps to go but he was not to be denied the victory. Toby K's Hideaway IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature saw Andrew Burg takes the early lead but Eric Stanton worked his way up to second and set his sights on Burg. Burg and Stanton battled it out with Stanton edging out Burg on lap six across the line before the only caution came out. Stanton lead the remaining laps to take the win over Nathan Ballard, Andrew Burg, John Watson and Benji Irvine.

In The Miller Lite IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature, it was Michael Bilyeu grabbing the lead on lap one. Bilyeu, Steve Meyer, Trent Murphy and Jay Schmidt went four wide on lap two for the top spot with Meyer taking the lead. The only race caution came out on lap three for Schmidt in turn two. Donavon Smith finished third, Michael Jaennette was fourth and Dave Atcher was fifth.

The final feature of the night was the Coors Light IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event. Jimmy Gustin and Brett Ladehoff started on the front row and Gustin took advantage by taking the lead. Meanwhile behind the leaders the field was racing three and four wide. Erger, Ballard, Olson, Murty and Brown Take Season Opener at Benton County

Sunday Night it was back to the Benton County Speedway for its Season Opener and again i helped with lineups and scoring feature events but unlike the Frostbuster the week before i was able to keep notes and results.

First feature of the night was BCS Micro Mods and clearly it was wild caution filled feature. Tristan Cordes grabbed the lead on lap one but just after that the caution came out for Brandon Maitland spinning in turn two. Don Erger took the lead away but just after lap two the caution came out again. Erger saw young Brody Willett take the lead away on lap three but another caution came out. Willett continued to lead until lap eight when Brandon Maitland took the lead away but when the caution came out on lap ten for Tristan Cordes in turn four, Maitland and Willett did not hear the message of yellow both were to be sent to the tail for racing under yellow but Maitland would hit Cordes hard both drivers would get out but it would end their night.  Erger enherited the lead and went on to take the win over Jeff Davis, Jason Gorman, Willett and Matt Post.

Matt Pohlman took the early lead in the IMCA Hobby Stocks feature and appeared to be heading on to the win despite a caution on lap nine for Nathan Ballard and then on lap ten for Zach Swanson but it was Ballard making his way through the field to take the win over Pohlman, Justin Wacha, Brett Vanous and Adam Petrzelka.

Curt Hilmer grabbed the lead on lap one of the IMCA Northern SportMods 16 lap feature but it was Kyle Olson taking the lead on lap two. Olson went on to take the win with Duane Van Deest in second, Hilmer in third, Danny Dvorak in fourth and Matt Petrzelka in fifth.

IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature saw Damon Murty lead from start to finish but the battle was for second as Norman Chesmore beat Scott Pippert. Michael Peterson was fourth and Justin Stander finished fifth.

Final feature of the night was the 20 lap IMCA Modifieds feature and it was Joel Rust leading the first eight laps before Kyle Brown took the lead on lap nine. Brown held on to the win over a hard charging Troy Cordes, Rust, Patrick Flannagan and Scott Hogan.

Benton County Speedway continues to race every Sunday through September plus several races for the IMCA Late Models part of the Sunday Series, Benton County Fair Events, Hawkeye Dirt Tour. You can find the complete schedule and information at http://www.jjamracing.net/

Austin Luellen started on the pole in the 12 lap IMCA Hobby Stocks feature event and the only thing that slowed him down was a caution on lap three for Solomon Bennett in turn four. Luellen took the checkered over Andrew Burg, Cody Gustoff, Eric Stanton and Aaron Rudolph.

Up next was the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature and it was Frostbuster Winner Jimmy Gustin taking the early lead but just after one lap was completed the caution came out for Luke Wanninger coming to a stop in turn three. May, Gustin, Luellen, Jaennette and Gilman Victorious at Marshalltown
By Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (April 10th, 2015) – Mother Nature tried to spoil our fun by dumping a lot of rain over the area during the week but Friday Night it was back to action at the Marshalltown Speedway for the 51st season.

109 cars signed in to tame the high banked quarter mile on Ryan Ashton Not Racing Season Opener.

First feature of the night was the 15 lap Mod Lite feature and it was Travis Stensland taking the early lead. Stensland encountered a three car battle with Mike Morrill and Josh May on lap three. Morrill took the lead away on lap four but it was Josh May taking the lead away on lap five. May appeared to be heading on to the win but after a trio of cautions just after halfway, he had Stensland and Morrill on his back bumper again. May encounter trouble on the last lap which allowed his dad Jimmy May to sneak by and take the win meanwhile Josh May fell back to seventh. Charlie Brown, Stensland, Cory Sauerman and Randy Bryan rounded out the top five.

Neil Follett and Travis Peterson started on the front row of the IMCA Northern SportMods 18 lap feature event but Jenae Gustin made it a three car race for the top spot on lap one. Gustin took the lead and never looked back in the feature that went caution free and about the only thing slowing her down was lap traffic. Behind her, Sam Wieben and Doug Smith battled for second, Wieben finished second and Smith came home third. Clint Luellen worked his way from seventh to fourth and Peterson was fifth.

Toby K's Hideaway IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature saw Nathan Ballard taking the early lead but Austin Luellen worked his way from sixth to second and set his sights on the lead. The caution came out on lap three and then again on the restart but it was Luellen taking the lead away and appeared to be heading on to the win before a caution came out on lap eight and then again on lap 11. Luellen saw himself in a three car battle with Ballard and Eric Stanton, Ballard took the lead on lap 12 but it was Luellen taking it back on lap 13. Luellen went on to take the win over Ballard, Stanton, Dustin Elliott and Jamie Songer.

The Miller Lite IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature went green-to-checkered but the action was hot and heavy through out the entire field the entire distance. Steve Meyer jumped out to the lead but then saw himself in a battle with Jay Schmidt and Michael Jaennette. Jaennette took the lead away meanwhile they were racing four and five wide deep in the field. Jaennette took the win with Meyer in second, Donavon Smith third, Damon Murty fourth and Jay Schmidt in fifth.

The final feature of the night was the Coors Light IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event. There was great three and four wide racing including up front . Kelly Shyrock lead the first six laps before the 1st race caution came out that put Ronn Lauritzen and Josh Gilman right behind him.
