Delonjay, Thrasher and Stephens Take First Wins at Osky on Season Championship Night
by Jeremy Fox

Oskaloosa, Iowa (August 23rd, 2017) - Weekly Racing came to a close at the Southern Iowa Speedway on Season Championship Night sponsored by KBOE 104.9 FM "Your Station for Local Racing" and Mahaska Bottling. 51 cars signed in to put the regular season to a close at the monster half mile.

Jeffrey Delonjay (Sport Compacts), Danny Thrasher (Stock Cars) and Brad Stephens (Hobby Stocks) all take first wins of the season at Osky meanwhile Scott Dickey (Modifieds) and Curtis VanDerWal (Sport Mods) make a return visit to victory lane.

Levi Heath and Nathan Moody led the field to the green in the Kelli Steil State Farm IMCA Sport Compacts feature but by the end of lap one, it was Brandon Housley jumping out to the early lead. Housley looked comfortable out front meanwhile Heath exited pit side early after some expired on his hot rod and Moody slipped back to about fifth. Jeffrey Delonjay, making his first visit to Osky, took the lead over when Housley experience issues forcing him to his night. Shortly after the only caution came on lap nine when Moody hit the tires on the bottom side of turn four knocking it out on the track. That forced a green-white-checkered finish but Delonjay was not fazed as he went on to take his first win at Osky ahead of "Happy Feet" Bill Whalen Jr., John Gill and Dalton Winkleman. Levi Heath was the 2017 Track Champion.

Next up on the speedway was the 14 lap Musco Lighting IMCA Modified feature event. Brandon Banks started outside the front row and he took advantage of that by grabbing the early lead however Banks exited pit side on lap four when experienced mechanical issues. That gave the lead to Scott Dickey after Andrew Schroeder also exited pit side. Dickey cruised on to take his third win of the season in Osky ahead of Carlisle's Garrett Wilson. Andrew Schroder was third, Gordon Head was fourth and Banks was fifth. Cayden Carter, not in attendance last night was the 2017 Track Champion.

In the Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars feature, it was Michael Peterson taking the early lead but on lap four Peterson experienced issues and headed pit side that gave the lead over to Dustin Griffiths. The caution came out on lap six when Cody McClure spun in turn two. Griffiths knew it was not going to be easy as he had Danny Thrasher and Nathan Wood on his back bumper on the restart, those three would battle it out for the race lead with Griffiths holding on it until the final lap. Thrasher made the right move and edged out Wood and Griffiths at the line to take his first win in the Stock Cars. Wood was second, Griffiths was third, Mike Brown was fourth and McClure was fifth. Wood by simply starting the feature event clinched the 2017 Track Championship.

Danny Brau and Trent Brink battled for the top spot in the 14 lap Oskaloosa True Value IMCA Sport Mods feature. Brink would officially be scored the leader at the line and led the first three laps before Logan Anderson took the top spot away on lap four. Anderson as the leader was short as Curtis VanDerWal took the lead away on lap five. VanDerWal cruised on to take his 11th win of the season in Osky. Anderson, Brink, Tony Johnson and Danny Brau rounded out the top five. VanDerWal also claimed the 2017 Track Championship.

Final feature of the night was the 15 lap KBOE Radio / Mahaska IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Brad Stephens wrestled the lead away from fellow front starter Ryan Wells. Stephens slipped up just a bit allowing Jeff Anderson to take the top spot away on lap four. Shortly after the caution came out for Riley Meinders in turn one. Anderson and the field saw the caution again just after lap five scored when his son Shannon Anderson spun on the back stretch. Jeff Anderson had Brad and Jared Stephens on his back bumper but neither of them could by Anderson for the lead. The caution came out again on lap 10 for Meinders in turn two, on the restart Anderson had Brad Stephens and Aaron Martin behind him but again neither could take the lead. Anderson continued to lead until lap 13 when Mike Hughes made contact with Anderson in turn four sending Anderson spinning in front of the field. The caution came out immediately. Anderson would be able to continue and go to the tail, Hughes penalized for questionable driving. However under the caution, Shannon Anderson did not like what happened to his dad so he spun Hughes, Hughes then flipped upside down in turn two. As a result, Hughes and Shannon Anderson, both disqualified and received no points and no pay. Aaron Martin was to inherit the lead as he was running third at the time but he made contact in turn four and that gave the lead over to Stephens. Brad Stephens led the final two laps to take his first win ahead of Christian Huffman, Jared Stephens, Thomas Stevens and Ryan Wells. Shannon Anderson still went on to claim the 2017 Track Championship.

Weekly Racing has come to a close at the Southern Iowa Speedway but racing action has not as the Musco Lighting Fall Challenge takes place in October. Details will be on the website and Facebook in the next few weeks.

First Visit to Sports Park Raceway

First Visit to Sports Park Raceway
by Jeremy Fox

When The Benton County Speedway in Vinton released their schedule, it scheduled a week off on Sunday Night (July 23rd) so that meant I was free to go to the races somewhere else so the decision was to head to the Sports Park Raceway in Fort Dodge. This was my first visit to the race track and I was very pleased with all the work Jason Vansickel, Dave Doughty and Marty Pringle have done to the facility to make it a hit in 2017. 78 cars signed into tame the 1/2 mile dirt oval on their next too last weekly points night.

First feature of the night was the Sport Compacts 10 lap feature event. Mick Evans and James Peterson led the field to the green and it was Evans that wrestled the top spot early. Evans out front comfortably until the caution came out on lap five for Caine Mahlberg in turn two. Evans began to try to hold off every challenge but Riley Paysen made the right move and took the top spot away on lap seven. Paysen went on to take his 8th win at Sports Park meanwhile Mahlberg worked his way back threw to finish in second, Bryan Vannausdle in third, John Gill was fourth and Scott Ellis was fifth.

Dillon Magnussen took advantage of the pole position in the Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event by grabbing the lead. Magnussen and the field saw the caution come out on lap three when Danny Sassman Jr. spun in turns three and four. Magnussen held off the challenges until Chanse Hollatz took the top spot away on lap nine. Hollatz went on to take his first win on his first visit to Sports Park in 2017. Magnussen held off Matt Mundt for second, Mundt came across in third. Jeff Fink and Myles Michehl rounded out the top five.

In the 16 lap Sport Mod feature event, it was Brandon Toftee jumping out to the race lead front his outside second row starting spot. Toftee saw the caution come out on lap two for Ty Griffith stopped in turn one. Toftee had Rocky Caudle and Brett Meyer on his back bumper but he held them off until the next caution. The second caution came out on lap eight for Justin Patterson and Kendall Zuetlau in turn four. Toftee was not fazed but the caution came out again four laps later on lap 12 when Taylor Elliott experience trouble and came to a stop at the top of turn four. Toftee would go on take his second win at Sports Park as the caution was coming when Brett Meyer and Jeff Deal spun in turn four. Jason Bass came across the line in second ahead of Caudle, David Calmer and Ty Griffith.

Cody Gustoff led the field six laps of the Stock Cars 18 lap feature event. Calvin Lange took the top spot away on lap seven began to look comfortable in the top spot until the caution came out on lap 12 for Jesse Ely in turn three. Lange and the field saw the caution come again on lap 13 for Reid Keller and Cory Roe spinning on the back stretch after contact from Jeff Lyon, Keller and Roe was given their spot back and Lyon sent to the tail for questionable driving. Lange held off Keller and Roe to take his third win in a row at Sports Park. Roe finished second, Keller was third, Tyler Pickett was fourth and Greg Gill was fifth.

Next up was the Modifieds 18 lap feature event. Tyler Prochaska took the top spot early but the caution came out on lap six for Nick Roberts in turn four after contact with Bill Crimmins, Crimmins penalized for questionable driving but did not like the call so went to the pits. Prochaska held on to the lead until the halfway point when Kelly Shryock took the lead away. Shryock pulled away and went on to take his third win at Sports Park. Jeff James, Prochaska, Shane DeMey and Roberts finished second through fifth respectively.

Final feature of the night was the 15 lap Late Models feature. Doug McCollough lead lap one but it was "Chargin" Charlie McKenna wrestling the lead away on lap two. McKenna pulled away but Ryan Griffith began to chase him down on lap 12, McKenna was on the bottom and Griffith on the highside. Griffith was unable to get by McKenna, so McKenna would go on to take his fifth Sports Park win in 2017. Griffith was second, McCollough was third, Todd Johnson was fourth and Don Beckstrom was fifth.

Racing action finished at 9:26pm meaning I was back on the road around 9:30pm for 1.5 hour drive back to Marshalltown. I was very pleased how the show was ran and if I get another opportunity to visit I will make the trip back up way to go Sports Park Raceway!

VanDenBerg looked comfortable out front but Brayton Carter was trying to chase him down, Carter did exactly that on lap seven but so did Curtis VanDerWal. VanDenBerg, Carter and VanDerWal was three wide battling for the race in turn three on lap 7. VanDerWal took the lead away on lap eight and went on to take his ninth win at his hometown track and fifth consecutive win. Carter wrestled second away from VanDenBerg, who came home third. Dan Drury was fourth and Tony Johnson was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the Budweiser IMCA Stock Cars 14 lap feature event. Just like he did on Tuesday, Dustin Griffiths grabbed the race lead early. Griffiths held off several challenges from Nathan Wood until the caution came out on lap seven. Griffiths was not going to let that mid race caution deny him his second win at the monster half mile in 2017 as he would hold off Wood for the win. Mike Hughes worked his way up to finish third ahead of Derrick Agee and Danny Thrasher.

Next Wednesday Night will be Kiss 101.5 Night at the Races. Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks make their third and final appearance along with the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks and IMCA Sport Compacts.

Hobby Stocks will still have the $300 bounty on the line, if they can beat Shannon Anderson, thanks to Edel Lawn Service, Cindy Drost and Independent Auto of Marshalltown next week. Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing at 7:30pm.
