Thornton and Ward With Epic Battle In the Modifieds at Boone

Last Saturday, I made the decision since I went to the Brooklyn Raceway for a second night of racing during their Spring Nationals, This Saturday I would make my first visit to the Boone Speedway in 2018.

161 cars signed in for the second weekly points race at the Boone Speedway with 37 Modifieds, 31 Stock Cars, 28 Sport Mods, 34 Hobby Stocks, 19 Mod Lites and 12 Sprint Cars. Ricky Thornton,  Johnny Spaw, Austin Luellen, Andrew Burg, Travis Stensland and Mike Moore all took feature wins.

First feature of the night was the Mod Lites 15 lap feature event. Charlie Brown led the opening lap before Bryan Zehm took the top spot away on lap two with a slider on Brown. Travis Stensland followed suit and began to chase down Zehm. Stensland was able to make the pass for the lead on lap six. Stensland went on to lead the remaining laps to take the win and Zehm ran second. Randy Bryan finished third, Joe Glick was fourth and Mike Morrill was fifth.

It was the IMCA Sport Mods 18 lap feature event up next and it was Doug Smith taking the lead on lap one. Just after the lap was scored the caution came out for Nate Albrant spinning in turn three. Smith had Johnathan Logue and Tyler Inman on his back bumper on the restart but Smith got a great restart however just after lap two was scored the caution came out when Inman and Cam Reimers spun in turn two. Smith again got a great restart and began to pull away until the next caution came out on lap seven for Brandon Coffman in turn two. Logue finally able to stay close to Smith and manage to take the top spot away on lap 11 but a lap later the caution came out for Daniel Tasler in turn four. Logue and Smith continued to battle it until Austin Luellen added his name to the fight just before a pair of cautions on lap 15. Luellen took the lead away on lap 17 and held off Smith and Logue for the win. Jake McBirnie and Hunter Longnecker rounded out the top five.

Making their debut in the 2018 season at the Boone Speedway was the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars for their 18 lap feature event. Before a single lap was scored the caution came out when Devin Wignall and Frank Rodgers got together in turn two. Brandon Allen took the early lead and led until Defending Track Champion Mike Moore took the top spot away on lap 11. The caution came out on lap 15 for C.J. Houseman in turn two and then again on lap 17 for Trevor Serbus in turn four. Moore was not going to be denied the win on his birthday as he went on to take the win. Tyler Thompson, C.J. Houseman, Wignall and Joel Thorpe finished second through fifth.

Ty Hill spun in turn two bring out the caution before a single lap scored in the 18 lap IMCA Stock Cars feature event. Michael Murphy took the lead lap one but Wayne Gifford took the top spot on lap two. Murphy did not give up as he took the lead back on lap three. Gifford also didn't give up because he took the top spot away on lap eight. Gifford looked to be heading on to take the win until tenth place starter Johnny Spaw worked his way through the field. Spaw took the lead away on lap 15 and would go on to take the win ahead of Gifford. Troy Jerovetz, Murphy and Donavon Smith all finished top five.

Eric Elliott led the first six laps for the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event before Ricky Thornton Jr. worked his way from the ninth starting spot to take the lead away on lap seven. Tenth place starter Tim Ward followed his way through and chase down Thornton to begin and epic battle for the top spot. Ward would deliver a White Castle Slider and take the top spot away on lap 19 but Thornton returned the favor in the same fashion on the last lap. Thornton cut the line off on Ward in turn four to head on and take the win. Ward was second ahead of Elliott, Josh Gilman and Josh Most.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Hobby Stocks 12 lap feature event and it was Daniel Smith leading the first seven laps. Smith saw 10th place starter Andrew Burg take the top spot away on lap eight. Burg went on to take the win, Dylan Nelson got by Smith for second. Adam Ayers was fourth and Ryan Wells was fifth.

Next Saturday will be the first of four Super Saturdays presented by IMCA.TV at the Boone Speedway. Night 2 of Twin High Banks Hustle at Marshalltown

With the Hancock County Speedway not racing on Friday Night its back to the Marshalltown Speedway for Night 2 of the Twin Highbanks Hustle which also was the Track Points Season Opener. Again the IMCA Modifieds ($1,000 to win), IMCA Late Models ($750 to win), IMCA Hobby Stocks ($300 to win) and IMCA Stock Cars & IMCA Sport Mods ($500 to win) plus the Mod Lites ($200 to win) joined the card.

Friday Night saw 161 cars checked in to race on the high-banked 1/4 mile dirt track. Twenty-Eight Hobby Stocks, 31 Sport Mods, 45 Modifieds, 25 Stock Cars, 13 Late Models and 19 Mod Lites. Eric Stanton, Austin Luellen, Ricky Thornton Jr. Damon Murty, Darrel DeFrance and Randy Bryan all took the feature wins on night two.

First feature of the night was the Mod Lites 15 lap feature event. Jason Masengarb from Colona, Illinois took the top spot early and appeared to be heading on to take the feature win but a caution came out on lap 10 for debris on the front-stretch. On the restart, Masengarb had Mike Morrill and Travis Stensland wanting to take the lead away neither was successful and Morrill got way to high in turn 2 and drove off the top and lost a lot of spots. Masengarb saw the caution come out again on lap 13 when Jon Braathun spun turn 4 forcing a green-white-checkered finish. Masengarb had  Randy Bryan on his back bumper on the restart. Bryan took the lead coming to the white-flag and would go on and take the win ahead of Masengarb. Stensland was third, Bryan Zehm was fourth and Erin Turner was fifth.

Next up was the IMCA Sport Mods 20 lap feature and it was Lucas Lamberies from Wisconsin leading the first 10 laps before Austin Luellen unleashed the rage and took the top spot away on lap 11. Luellen pulled away and went on to take the feature win. Lamberies, Brayton Carter, Sam Wieben and Taylor Musselman round out the top five.

In the IMCA Hobby Stocks 18 lap feature, After the initial start was called back it was Eric Stanton grabbing the top spot. However just after one lap was scored the caution came out for Jeremiah Andrews in turn two. Stanton was not going to let that bother him although he had to contend with Bradley Graham and David Rieks. Stanton fought them for a short time but Rieks took the top spot on lap 8 after a little contact between him and Stanton. Stanton was determine to take the top spot back and he did just that on lap 17. Stanton took the win with Rieks in 2nd, Shannon Anderosn in 3rd, Chanse Hollatz in 4th and Leah Wroten in 5th.

Jeff Mueller started inside row two in the 20 lap IMCA Stock Car feature but was in the lead using the bottom side of the speedway on lap one. Mueller was committed on the bottom meanwhile Randy Brands, Jay Schmidt and Damon Murty was among the drivers trying to make the top side work. Brands took the top spot away from Mueller on lap four. Murty worked his way from seventh to the top spot on lap 11. Murty cruised on take the win at Marshalltown ahead of Brands, Mueller, Travis Van Straten and Schmidt.

In the IMCA Late Models 15 lap feature, it was Hometown Boy Darrel DeFrance taking off right where he left on Thursday Night. DeFrance started outside front row and would lead all 15 laps and go on to take the win. Todd Cooney finished second after his crew worked all night and day trying to get the back up car race ready after he rolled on Thursday. Kyle Hinrichs ran third, Joe Zrostlik was fourth and Richie Gustin Jr. was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event and it would be all Ricky Thornton Jr. leading all 20 laps and taking the win. Hunter Marriott ran second the whole distance. Cayden Carter moved up from sixth to finish third. Kyle Brown was fourth and Richie Gustin Jr. was fifth.

Night 1 of Twin High Banks Hustle at Marshalltown

With Mother Nature not many places have been able to race and that did not include the Marshalltown Speedway until Thursday Night when the Speedway hosted the first of two consecutive nights of racing during the Twin Highbanks Hustle. Thursday's Night show was for IMCA Regional, State and National Points but not for Track Points with $1,000 to win Modifieds, $500 to win Stock Cars & Sport Mods, $300 to win Hobby Stocks and $750 to win Late Models.

A total of 119 cars checked in to compete on the High Banks of Marshalltown on a Thursday Night. Twenty-One Hobby Stocks, 27 Sport Mods, 43 Modifieds, 17 Stock Cars and 11 Late Models. Shannon Anderson, Jared Van Deest, Damon Murty, Joel Rust and Darrel DeFrance all took the feature wins.

First feature of the night was the IMCA Sport Mods feature event slated for 20 laps. Thomas Egenberger took advantage of his front row starting spot by leading the opening lap. Travis Storjohann took the lead away on lap two but that would be short lived as the caution came out for the only time on lap three when Jake McBirnie rolled off the top of turn two. On the restart, Storjohann was challenged by Jared Van Deest. Van Deest took the lead away and cruised to the win ahead of Brayton Carter, who moved up through the field after starting in 10th. Austin Luellen came back from a B-Main to finish 3rd. Dusty Masolini finished 4th and Sam Wieben was 5th.

Next up was the IMCA Hobby Stocks 18 lap feature and it took them four chances to get going after a trio of cautions. First caution was for Ben Newhouse in turn two then Mitchell Thomas on the back stretch. Third caution was for Justin Lovig in turn 2 after he nearly flipped upside down but leaving a lot debris in turns 1 and 2. When the race got going it was 7 time National Champion Shannon Anderson grabbing the lead. Anderson appeared to be comfortable out front but the caution came out again on lap 7 for Kevin Derry in turn four and then again on lap 11 for Newhouse in turn two. Anderson had to contend with Eric Stanton late in the race but held off the challenges late to take the win in the class known as the "Wild Thing". Stanton, Eugene Nicklas, Justin Wacha and Keeran Sampson rounded out the top five.

After the Hobby Stocks had a total of five cautions it was nice to see that the class known "The Class to Tough To Tame" IMCA Stock Cars went 20 laps caution free. Paul Shepard and Jay Schmidt led the field to the green which saw Schmidt grabbing the top spot early. Schmidt worked the high side of the speedway but so was Damon Murty, a slight bobble was all Murty needed from Schmidt and he was going to be in the lead. Murty saw the door open just slightly on lap nine and grabbed the top spot away. Murty went on to the win meanwhile Schmidt was passed by Jeff Mueller for second. Shepard and Tyler Pickett finished fourth and fifth.

IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature was only slowed once when Ricky Thornton Jr. went off the top of turn two. Joel Rust started on the pole and would lead all 20 laps of the feature event meanwhile behind him they were racing hard for positions. Hunter Marriott finished 2nd, Tyler Droste was third, Tim Ward finished fourth and Ethan Dotson was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Late Models 20 lap feature event and it would be all the hometown boy Darrel DeFrance leading all 20 laps and taking his first win of the 2018 season. However just after 1 lap in the books the red flag came out when Joe Zrostlik got sideways on the backstretch over corrected and collected five other cars : Jeremiah Hurst, Todd Cooney, Andy Nezworski, Curtis Glover and Luke Pestka. Cooney went off the backstretch in to the dirt hills and flipped upside down and Glover also flipped upside down on the backstretch. Everybody was okay but ended their nights. DeFrance was the man the whole way despite a last lap slide job attempt by Chad Holladay. Rob Toland, Curt Schroeder and Luke Pestka rounded out the top five.

Won't have to wait long as the Marshalltown Speedway is right back in action tonight (Friday Night) for Night 2 of the Twin Highbanks Hustle. Modifieds are $1,000 to win again, Stock Cars & Sport Mods $500 to win, Hobby Stocks $300 to win, Late Models $750 to win and the Mod Lites $200 to win. Hot Laps at 7 pm and Racing is at 7:30 pm.

Mother Nature Wins at Marshalltown, No Problem Brooklyn It Is

The plan this  past week was to head to the Marshalltown Speedway for the Twin Highbanks Hustle on Thursday and Friday because of the Hancock County Speedway cancelling their Frostbuster Season Opener. However Mother Nature had different plans and gave us one more winter blast that forced Marshalltown to postpone the Twin Highbanks Hustle to April 26th & 27th and the Hancock County Speedway was forced to cancel April 27th Races because they have been unable to do any track prep this Sprinter.

So with those plans being cancelled last-minute plans was being made to go somewhere for racing on Friday Night and the plan was to make a short track to the Figure 8 Capital of the World known as the Brooklyn Raceway, a place i had planned going to for few years now but because of races at Marshalltown I did not go. This time though I was glad I made the trip where I met Track Owner/Promoter Don Wauters and several other great people who welcomed a newbie to the Figure 8 World. Not only did I just go watch the racing action but I took the camera along and took pictures from both nights of the "Sharon Jaennette Memorial" Spring Nationals, those pictures are posted on the Trackside Report Facebook Page.

Night #1 Photos : https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10157189624227195.1073741982.333727462194&type=3

Night #2 Photos : https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10157191994692195.1073741983.333727462194&type=3

On to Friday Night's Races of the Spring Nationals at Brooklyn: 6 Non-Winged Micro Sprints, 9 Hobby Stocks, 12 Front Wheel Drives, 7 Cruisers, 8 Junior FWD, 10 Stock Figure 8, 6 Pro Stock Figure 8 and 6 Open Figure 8.

Travis Rewerts led the Micro Sprints from start to finish with Doug Slyvester finishing 2nd. Jacob Lehman took the win in the Hobby Stocks feature with Anthony Goldsberry finishing runner-up. James Harring took the lead away with two laps to go in the Front Wheel Drive from John Schuring and went on to take the win. Duane & Jesse Zander won the 2 Man Cruiser class ahead of the Jacob & Lavern Lehman. Nathan Castellano running a number in honor of his grandpa goes out and takes his 1st win of the season in the Junior FWD division ahead of defending track champion Ethan Wauters. Rick Goldsberry takes the checkers first in the Stock Class with Jerome Kline finishing 2nd. Mark Schuring took the lead on lap three and never looked back going on to take the win in the Pro Stock Class ahead of Keith Lester. Final race of the night was the Open Figure 8 Class and it was Rick Roush taking the win ahead of Mark Schuring.

Saturday Night's Races of the Spring Nationals at the Brooklyn lived up to the quote "Wildest Show on Dirt" and also included the INEX Legend Cars "Racing for a Cause" C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors) raising money for family of fallen police officers. The Legend Cars raced at Lee County Speedway on Friday Night and made the trip to the Brooklyn Raceway on Saturday and there was a total of 17 Legend cars at Brooklyn. Eight Micro Sprints, 4 Hobby Stocks, 15 Front Wheel Drive, 10 Cruisers, 7 Junior Front Wheel Drive, 11 Stock Figure 8, 6 Pro Stock Figure 8 and 10 Open Class.

Riley Goodno took the lead away from Landon Hansen on lap two of the Micro Sprints and headed on to the win, Doug Slyvester finished second. Tim Brockhouse lead all 25 laps in the Legend Car feature event, Baiden Heskett finished second. Jacob Lehman matched his Hobby Stock feature win on Friday Night with a feature win on Saturday however this time he made the past with 2 laps to go, Travis Fenton managed to come back and take second. John Schuring slowed late in the race on Friday Night but on Saturday Night he was determined not to be denied even when the lap traffic began to got heavy as Schuring went on to take the win. Blake Cole & Zach Kane led the entire distance of the 2 Man Cruiser feature and Danielle & Bruce Kline finished 2nd. Brandon Allison dominated the Junior FWD and going on take the win ahead of Ethan Wauters. Rick Goldsberry took the lead late and won the Stock Class feature ahead of Josh Albertson. Mark Schuring led from start-to-finish in the Pro Stock Class and Scott Shook ran second. Rick Roush did it again by taking the win in the Open Class but this time had to chase down Mark Schuring, Schuring finished 2nd.

I want to thank Don Wauters and the Staff of the Brooklyn Raceway for inviting me to come down Friday and Saturday Night, it was a lot of fun and I wish you guys the best in the 2018 season. I will try to make another visit when you guys are racing if my schedule allows feel free to check out all information from the Brooklyn Raceway on their Facebook Page or at http://www.brooklynraceway.org/.

As I write this I am getting ready to head to the Benton County Speedway in Vinton for Season Opener with Modifieds, Stock Cars, Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks, Sport Compacts and BCS Micro Mods. As for next week the plan is Marshalltown on Thursday and Friday for the Twin Highbanks Hustle, Boone on Saturday and Vinton on Sunday.

Now you may notice I made no mention of Osky, they are racing on Wednesday however before there was any signs of racing happening this year I chose to give up Wednesday Nights because I was wore out by the end of the season working 3-4 nights a week. As many know I have attended Osky since 2012 and last season, I was the official voice of racing at Osky on KBOE 104.9 FM doing the Pre-Race Show & Race Night Flag to Flag coverage however prepping every week made the 3-4 nights a week turn into 4-5 nights a week work turning a passion into two jobs.

So from now on, you can find me at the Hancock County Speedway on Race Nights beginning on May 4th and Benton County Speedway every Race Night, this will allow for me to fill in more often at different race tracks if need be as announcer, scorer, flagman or track official.

Foxman's Notebook - Tuesday April 17th

ast Week, Mother Nature cooperated to allow us to get two of the four IMCA Frostbusters at Lee County Speedway in Donnellson and Benton County Speedway in Vinton. Marshalltown and Boone Speedway's Frostbusters fell victim to Mother Nature and her Spring Craziness.

Kelly Shryock won the IMCA Modifieds at Lee County with Hunter Marriott finishing 2nd. At Benton County Speedway, Shryock finished 8th meanwhile Marriott finished 2nd after he was passed on the last lap by Cayden Carter. Marriott (two 2nd place finishes) and Carter (3rd & 1st place finishes) would end up being tied in the Frostbuster points after Vinton with the unofficial champion being Carter because of the win in Vinton.

Todd Reitzler picked up the IMCA Stock Car win in Donnellson with Damon Murty finishing runner-up. Murty dominated at Benton County Speedway taking the win, Reitzler finished 2nd in Vinton. With Reitzler and Murty, each finishing 1st and 2nd place, they ended up tied in the Frostbuster Points.

Austin Howes won the IMCA Sport Mods on Wednesday in Donnellson meanwhile Joey Schaefer won the Sport Mods at Benton County Speedway in Vinton on Thursday. Tyler Soppe appears to be the unofficial Frostbuster Series Champion with a 4th place finish at Lee County and 2nd place finish at Vinton. Sam Wieben had a 6th place finish in Donnellson and 3rd place finish in Vinton appears to finish runner-up in points.

Defending IMCA Hobby Stock National Champion Shannon Anderson took the checkers first on Wednesday Night at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson with Eric Stanton finishing 2nd place. Stanton grabbed the feature win at the Benton County Speedway in Vinton and that would mean Stanton is the unofficial Frostbuster Series Champion, David Rieks will be the runner-up with a 5th place finish at Lee County and 2nd place finsh at Vinton.

As I write this the Southern Iowa Speedway has cancelled their Bill & Ray's Truck Repair and Kool Seamless Gutters Season Opener for this week Wednesday April 18th so the Season Opener for their shortened season will be next week and will be sponsored by Musco Lighting, Bill & Ray's Truck Repair and Kool Seamless Gutters. Osky is non-sanctioned but runs IMCA Rules and will be Draw/Redraw every week. On Monday April 16th, the Hancock County Speedway announced their Frostbuster scheduled for Friday April 20th has fallen victim to Mother Nature again and their fingers are crossed that racing action will get underaway next week on Friday April 27th but expected to get more Spring Snow on Wednesday this week.

Finally a race I want to give a shout out is the Brooklyn Raceway Spring Nationals which is being dubbed the Inaugural Sharon Jaennette Memorial. This past January, Sharon Jaennette passed away and her favorite track was the Brooklyn Raceway. She loved spending time with family and watching them do something they had a passion for and that being racing. So I ask if you are looking for some racing to attend this weekend then head to the Brooklyn Raceway on Friday & Saturday Night this week for the Sharon Jaennette Memorial Spring Nationals in support of the Jaennette Family.

Well I guess that is all for this week maybe next time there will be more to write about!
