Laney Takes Boone's Mod Anniversary Race, Padilla Takes Corn Belt Clash

With no Brooklyn Raceway or Warren County Speedway on Saturday night, I had the option to adventure to the races somewhere instead of my 20-year high school reunion. After going through those options, I decided to make the trip to the Boone Speedway to take in night 2 of the Modified and Sport Mod Anniversary, along with night 2 of the Mod Lites Corn Belt Clash.

One hundred fifty cars checked in to tame Iowa's Action Track, including 40 Modifieds, 34 Sport Mods, and 32 Mod Lites. The racing action was exciting all night long, meaning Rod Robbins and his track team were on point as usual. The final checkered flag was waived at 9:57 pm.

The first feature of the night was the IMCA STARS Mod Lites 25-lap Corn Belt Clash feature event sponsored by Carquest Auto Truck and Farm. Jon Padilla and Ben George led the field to the green flag. Padilla led the first two laps before George used the high side to take the top spot away. Austin Gray started third and applied pressure on Padilla and George. Gray took the top spot away using the bottom side on lap eight. Padilla wouldn't go away as he would come back to reclaim the lead on lap 12. After that, the only thing slowing the top three down was the lap traffic, but Padilla was able to manage it and go on to take the $500 to win the feature that went green-to-checkered. Gray finished second, tenth place starter Charlie Brown was third, Ohio's Carson Hubbard was fourth, and George fell back to fifth.

Dusty Masolini grabbed the lead early in the 20th Anniversary IMCA Northern Sport Mods 23-lap feature, sponsored by Elmquist Towing. Masolini received pressure from rookie Mike Smith. Smith was able to take the lead away on lap six and started to slip away, but then cautions plagued the mid part of the race. First caution on lap 10 for Randy Havlik and Travis Schmidt in turn four. Smith held off Masolini and Curtis Veber on the restart, but the caution came out again four laps later on lap 14 when Dustin Lynch, Schmidt, and Dennis Pittman got together in turn two and then again on the restart when Josalyn Elmqust slowed in turn four. Smith looked to be heading on to the win; meanwhile, Matt Avila worked his way from twelfth to second. Avila was followed by Cam Reimers and Brayton Carter. On lap 19, Smith spun in turn four, allowing Avila to get by, but Smith was able to get moving. However, an inadvertent yellow came out, so Smith was given the lead back. Avila took the top spot away on lap 21 and went on to take the $1,000 feature win. Smith, Reimers, Carter, and Masolini round out the top five.

Next up was the 25-lap feature for the 46th Anniversary of the IMCA Modifieds presented by D&E Outdoor Services. Jeremy Mills and Marshalltown's winner, Cody Laney, led the field to the green. Laney snatched up the race lead right away with Mills staying close early. The only cautions came out on lap five for Ethan Braaksma going off the top of turn four and then on lap six for Robert Moore spinning in turn four. Laney was determined to make it 2 for 2 on the weekend so far as he held off Mills and tenth place starter Jake McBirnie to capture the $2,000 to win feature event. Mills finished second, McBirnie was third, Todd Shute came home fourth, and thirteenth-place starter Izac Mallicoat came in fifth.

Josalyn Elmquist led the first lap of the Boone Moose Lodge 104 IMCA Stock Cars 20-lap feature event. Kevin Opheim took the top spot away on lap two and was followed by Troy Jerovetz. The caution came out on lap four when Chris Wilke, Scott Olson, and Jerry Gifford were in turn two. Opheim held off Jerovetz and David Smith on the restart and continued to lead until the next caution came out on lap 11 when Jerry Williams spun in turn two. Smith took the top spot away on lap 14, but Opheim regained it on lap 15. That was short-lived as Smith was able to work back by Opheim on lap 16, and he would go on to take the feature win. Opheim settled for second, Josh Daniels claimed third, tenth-place starter Michael Jaennette took fourth, and Devin Smith was fifth.

The final feature of the night was the 15-lap Pickett Salvage IMCA Hobby Stock Feature event. Before a single lap was scored, the caution came out twice. The first one is for Cody Pontious spinning in turn one then on the restart, Joey Young spins in turn one. Brandon Bombardo took the top spot when the race finally got going, fending off Brayden Fahrni and Dustin Filloon. The caution came out one more time on lap four for Micah Lavrenz and Mason Burkman spinning on the back stretch. Bombardo continued to lead the way until "Topless" Joe Doran worked his way from eleventh. Doran took the top spot away on lap eight and was able to hang on and capture the feature win. Bombardo, Will Smith, Skylar Pruitt, and Eric Knutson rounded out the top five.

Weekly racing continues at the Boone Speedway; they do change over to their summer hours. Pits open at 4:30p, grandstands open at 5:30p, hot laps at 6p, and racing at 7p.

Notable races at Boone coming up on June 7th are the Capital Signs Topless 2-FER; June 21st is the Thrive Hawkeye Challenge with Sprint Kings; and Tuesday, June 24th, is the Harris Clash featuring the Mods, Sport Mods, and Stock Cars.

Thornton Takes SLMR; Barnhill, Schafroth, Carter, Richards, Gardner, and Daniels Claim Weekly Feature Wins at Stuart

With Marshalltown racing on Thursday night this week because of a junior high rodeo taking over the fairgrounds, it meant a Friday night off in Motown. It was an amazing weather day, so with the Super Late Model Racing Series Late Models heading to the Karl Chevrolet Stuart Speedway and racing along with the weekly racing divisions, the decision was made to hop in the car to make the 93-mile one-way trip.

One hundred thirteen cars signed in to tame the quarter-mile bullring. The racing surface was fantastic, which comes as no surprise, as the dirt whisperer, Mike Van Genderen, always produces a fantastic surface to race on, and when he doesn't, he always blames himself. No worries on Friday night, as the racing track produced some amazing racing action all night long. The final checkered flag was waived at 10:46 pm.

The first feature of the night was the Hawkeye Auto Salvage IMCA Sport Compacts 14-lap feature event; Michael Gardner outwrestled Daniel Clayton for the race lead. The first caution came out on lap two, when Cejay Whisler hit a turn two infield tire. Gardner held off Curtis Masterson, Clayton, and John Martinez on the restart and started to slip away when those three started battling for position until a caution came out on lap seven for debris in turn one. Gardner held on to take his first win at Stuart. Blake Fineran worked his way from fourteenth to second, Martinez finished third, tenth-place starter Corwyn Whisler came home fourth, and twelfth-place starter Tyler Fiebelkorn was fifth.

Lucas Daniels took full advantage of the pole position in the Outlaw Mini Mods 15-lap feature event. Lucas Daniels held off Chase Daniels until Chase spun in turn four by himself, bringing out the first caution on lap five. Lucas Daniels continued to lead the way, and then a caution came out on lap 14 because Justin Winkler slowed and came to a stop in turn three, forcing a green-white-checkered finish. Lucas Daniels took the win over Bobby Daniels, seventh-place starter Bradyn Gustin, Zackary Schaefer, and Ace Wolfgram.

Next on the speedway was the Rick's Towing & Transport IMCA Hobby Stocks 16-lap feature event, "The Burglar" Andrew Burg grabbed the top spot early and started to pull away until a caution came out on lap three for Dylan Hill spinning on the front stretch and Ronnie Hill spinning in turn three. Burg continued to lead, meanwhile IMCA National Points Leader Dillon Richards worked his way from twelfth to second on lap five and started to apply pressure on Burg. Burg held him off until a caution came out on lap 13 for Erick Knutsen and Keith Burg getting together in turn four. Burg had to contend with Richards and Solomon Bennett on the restart, and this set up an exciting finish. After Bennett was shuffled out of the mix, the other two battled it out. Burg left the door open at the bottom in turn three, allowing Richards to pounce coming to the white flag. Richards grabbed the top spot to go on to take the feature win, as Bennett finished second, ninth-place starter Skylar Pruitt came home third, Alex Yoerger was fourth, and Dylan Hill came back to finish fifth.

After a brief farming session, the Super Late Model Racing Series, known as the SLMR, took to the track for their 30-lap feature event. After 3 heats, 1 B-feature, and SLMR provisionals, the 24-car field was set. Charlie McKenna and Blair Nothdurft led the field to the green; Nothdurft grabbed the race lead early. Just before Nothdurft and the rest of the top five caught up to lap traffic, the caution came out on lap six when one of the back markers, Brian Kosiski, spun in turn two, collecting back markers JJ Rodeman and Darrel DeFrance. It also resulted in Nothdurft, Jesse Sobbing, Corey Zeitner, and Dylan Thornton getting caught up; this set off some controversy on how they would line up on the restart. After about five minutes of straightening it out, racing resumed. Nothdurft led lap seven, but Sobbing would make a power move and take the top spot away on lap eight. Sobbing led the race until lap 13, when Nothdurft took the lead back. The caution came out on lap 14 when Rodeman and "The Banker," Jay Burdic, got together in turn four. Nothdurft led until lap 20, when Thornton took the race lead away. The caution came out one more time on lap 23 for Andrew Kosiski stopping in turn one. Thornton held off Sobbing and Dallon Murty on the restart and went on to take the feature win, worth a payday of $3,900 because of picking up the Skyline Materials Lucky 6th Place starter bonus money on top of the normal $3,000 to win. Sobbing finished second, and Murty charged from 11th to finish third. Nothdurft fell back to fourth, and Corey Zeitner came back to finish fifth.

Mitchell Morris led the first four laps of the Karl Chevrolet of Stuart IMCA Northern Sport Mods 20-lap feature event before fifth-place starter "Speedy Bray" Brayton Carter took the top spot away. Carter then pulled away before seeing the caution come out on lap seven for Chris Burke spinning on the top side of turn one. Carter got a great restart and checked out, appearing to cruise on to the easy win. The caution came out on lap 17 for Josalyn Elmquist spinning in turns one and two. Carter held off Jenae Gustin and Morris on the restart to take the feature win. Gustin, Morris, Randy Havlik, and Dayton Swatek rounded out the top five.

Rowdee Van Genderen outdueled Bryan Snell for the top spot early in the Affordable Quality Exteriors IMCA Stock Cars 20-lap feature event. Van Genderen hit his marks and got a little gap over the rest of the field. Buck Schafroth, Dustin Reeh, Dillon Solum, and Larry Robinson Jr. battled it out behind until a caution came out on lap 16 for Reeh spinning out in turn two. Schafroth got the best restart and made an aggressive move in turns one and two to take the race lead away. Van Genderen tried to return the favor, but Schafroth held it off. Schafroth claimed the feature win, Robinson got by Van Genderen for second, putting Rowdee in third. Solum and Dennis Elliott were fourth and fifth.

The final feature of the night was the VIP Contractors IMCA Modifieds 20-lap feature event. Colton Nelson from Osceola led the first lap, but it was Milton, Florida's Owen Barnhill who took the top spot away on lap two. Barnhill checked out and went on to capture his first feature win. Izaac Mallicoat worked his way from tenth to second, Jaxon Saathoff came home third, Nelson fell back to fourth, and ninth-place starter Riley Simmons was fifth.

Next up for the SLMR Late Models is a trip to northeast Iowa, to another one of Van Genderen's tracks, the Independence Motor Speedway in Independence for the East Series. The next West Series race is June 28th at the Adams County Speedway in Corning.

Karl Chevrolet of Stuart Speedway's next race is on Wednesday, May 14th, for the Dynamic Drivelines Dirt Duel featuring the Dirt Crown IMCA Stock Car Series and the Eilts Fabrication Hobby Stock Challenge Series from Dirt Crown. IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Sport Compacts, and Outlaw Mini Mods round out the card.
