Moorman, Brown, Stanton, Luellen, Atcher and Wanninger Takes on 50th Anniversary Celebration NightBy Jeremy Fox
Marshalltown, Iowa (July 4th, 2014) – Since August 17th, 1964 the Marshalltown Speedway has been a place to watch some of the best racing action. As we celebrated the nation's holiday we also celebrated 50 years of racing and the fans was not disappointed as there was great racing all night long as well an amazing Fireworks display by the city of Marshalltown after the races.
David Moorman seems to find his way to the front a lot in the IMCA Sport Compacts eight lap feature and this week was no different. Moorman lead all the laps to take the win over John Gill, Zach Brenner and Alec Gill. Aaron Miller experienced troubles and was unable to make the feature.
The Mod Lites 15 lap feature saw Eric Hendrickson grab the lead early. Hendrickson saw the first yellow come out on lap five for a couple of cars coming to a stop on the run off road. Hendrickson continued to lead only to see the caution come out again on lap eight. Hendrickson saw Charlie Brown, Mike Morrill, Josh May and Jimmy May right there. Charlie Brown would make the move and take the lead away on lap 12, Brown went on to take his fourth win of the season. Jimmy May worked his way around Hendrickson for second. Mike Morril and Josh May rounded out the top five.
Clint Nelson led the opening lap in the 12 lap IMCA Hobby Stocks feature but then the caution came out when Brice Udelhoven spun in turn two collecting a handful of other cars. Nelson on the restart was saw Eric Stanton pass him. Stanton went on take his third win at Motown this season. Eric Larson came home second, John Watson was third, Nathan Ballard was fourth and Justin Lichty was fifth.
The Big Eight Tyre Center IMCA Northern SportMods 18 lap feature event saw Ryan Ashton lead the first lap before the caution came out when Bryan Johnson came to a stop in turn three. Ashton got a great restart but then the caution came out again on lap two for Shawn Ritter, Tracy Wassenberg and Gatlin Leytham getting together in turn four. Jenae Gustin took the lead away from Ashton on the restart and she lead until the caution came out on lap nine for Tom Rawlins in turn one. Gustin got a great restart and pulled away but on lap 14 that came to and end as her powerplant expired going into turn three that handed the lead over to Clint Luellen. Luellen led the remaining four laps and held off several challenges from Andy Tiernan to take his fifth at Motown in 2014. Tiernan, Tony Olson, Sam Wieben and Brett Lowry rounded out the top five.
Before a single lap was completed in the "Class to Tough To Tame" IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature, the caution came out when Robert Stofer experienced troubles in turn one. Dave Atcher jumped out to the lead but just after three laps were placed in the books the caution came out for Russell Damme in turn two. Atcher saw several heavy hitters but he held them off until the final race caution on lap ten for JD Kennedy in turn two. Atcher had to contend with Donavon Smith the final eight laps but he held him off to take the checkers. This was Atcher's first win since May 20th, 2009 when he won the Stock Car feature during the USMTS Special and his first IMCA win since June 23rd, 2006 at Motown. Donavon Smith finished second with Trent Murphy, Michael Jaennette and Jay Schmidt in third through fifth.
Final feature of the night was the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature, after a caution came out and forced a complete restart it was the Rookie Eric Elliott taking the lead. Elliott lead the first caution on lap four when Derek Reimer spun in turn two. Third Generation Driver Tyler Droste took the lead away on lap seven and shortly after the final caution came out for Eric Elliott and Scott Simatovich in turn two. Droste lost the lead on lap 11 to Luke Wanninger. Wanninger held on to take his fourth win at MoTown. Ronn Lauritzen worked his way up to finish second.
