Haggard Gets 1st Career Win on Salute to Veterans and First Responders Night at Stuart

At 3 pm on Wednesday, the decision was finally made that I was going to headover to the Stuart International Speedway for Salute to Veterans and First Responders Night. The plan was to set the camera down and just enjoy a night of racing well thanks to track announcer Tony Paris, I joined in on announcing races. The Racing action on the track was exciting with two, three and four wide racing and a couple times they tried to make it five wide.

Salute to Veterans and First Responders got in Free thanks to friends from Casey's General Stores and was honored before the nights racing action. Wyffel Hybrids, John's Tree Service, Motorsports Warehouse, Spangler Automotive, Big Loda Trailer Sales, Wilson Welding Co., Elite Electric & Ulility and Corning Rentals LLC. The was also streamed on XR as have most of Stuart's 2020 races.

Eighty-Eight cars signed in on Wednesday Night including 20 VIP Contractors & Karl Chevrolet of Stuart IMCA Modifieds, 15 Affordable Quality Roofing & Exteriors, 19 Spangler Automotive IMCA Sport Mods, 11 Pitts Lawn Service and Rick's Towing IMCA Hobby Stocks, 13 John's Tree Service IMCA Sport Compacts and 10 Outlaw Mini Mods. Also there was a Pole Position Challenge race, Powder Puff and Mechanic Races also on the card.

First feature of the night was the John's Tree Service IMCA Sport Compacts 14 lap feature event. Bruce Hower led the first lap before Hunter Patrick took the lead away on lap two. Patrick held off several challenges from Curtis Masterson and Mitchell Bunch through out the race. Patrick went on to take his third win, second IMCA win at Stuart. Masterson finished seecond and Bryan Vannausdle finished third. Tenth place starter John Gill making his first appearance in 2020 finished fourth ahead of Tyler Fiebelkorn.

Before a lap was completed in the Spangler Automotive IMCA Sport Mods 18 lap feature, the caution was displayed twice. The first caution was for Jake Kubik and Blair Simmons in turn one. Then on the restart for Garrett Nelson, Chris Burke, Mitchell Morris and Nick Foster in turn one. When the racing action got going it was Josh Sink grabbing the race lead however the lead was short lived. "Speedy Bray" Brayton Carter took over th top spot away on lap two just prior to the caution when Skyler Lane spin in turn two. Carter went on to take his sixth win in Stuart. Nelson worked his way back through the field to finish in the runner-up spot. Dusty Masolini, Cam Reimers and Shane Paris round out the top five.

Affordable Quality Roofing & Exteriors IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature started with a caution just like the Sport Mods. The caution came out when Dana Cook spun in turn three. Brock Badger wrestled the early race lead from fellow front row starter Brad Derry. Badger got a little seperation as the battle behind him got intense with three and four wide racing. The caution came out on lap six for Del Enos spinning in turn one. Bob Daniels stole the lead away from Badger on the restart and fended off challenges from Buck Schafroth until the caution came out on lap 11 when Enos spun again in turn four. Daniels held off Badger and Schafroth to take the win. Badger came home second, Schafroth was third, Keith Simmons was fourth and Josh Daniels was fifth.

Outlaw Mini Mods saw the caution come out before a single lap was scored in their 12 lap feature event when Kenadi Songer came to a stop in turn four. Kamdyn Haggard jumped out to the early race lead like he had done several times this year but Luke Daniels worked his way from seventh to second in no time. Luke Daniels grabbed the lead away from Haggard when Haggard left the lane open on the bottom. Daniels led until lap nine when he clipped an infield tire causing him to have damage to the front end of his hot rod, that would give the lead back over to Haggard. Haggard went on to take his first career Outlaw Mini Mod feature win ahead of Bobby Daniels, Chase Daniels, Dan Kline and Matt Prehn.

Up next was the Pitt's Lawn Service and Rick's Towing IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event. David Bailey led the first four laps but on lap four, Bailey and Brandon Cox got together on the backstretch forcing the yellow to come out, Cox was sent to the tail. Bailey got his spot back and held off Dylan Nelson. Nelson did not go away as he grabbed the lead away on lap eight. Nelson and the field saw the caution come out in lap 11 when Rusty Bates spun in turn four. Nelson held off Bailey and Aaron Rudolph to go on and take the win, Nelson's second win in Stuart. Bailey, Cox, Matt Wahl and Rudolph rounded out the top five.

Final feature of the night was the VIP Contractors & Karl Chevrolet of Stuart IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event. Josh Gilman spun collecting Austin Kuehl, Dylan Thornton, Adam Ayers, Zach Dockter and Cory Sauerman. "T-Dub" Tim Ward started fifth but by the end of lap one, he was in the top spot. Ward went on to lead the entire distance but held off a hard charging Tom Berry Jr while making his way through heavy lap traffic. For Ward it was his first win in Stuart. Berry finished in a close second. Todd Shute finished third, twelfth place starter Ethan Dotson was fourth and Chase Rudolf finished fifth.

The Pole Postion Challenge went to Bob Daniels leading from start to finish. Mechanic Races went to the Buck Schafroth's Mechanic in the full fender action and Josh Sink's Mechanic in the Mod. Powder Puff Races went to the lady driving Patrick Pellman's car. Whitney Anderson won in Nick Foster's Sport Mod getting by Holly Paris to win the Mods Ladies Race. Final Checkered flag was displayed at 10:10pm.

Stuart International Speedway will take next week off in hopes of getting some rain as the pond has run out of water. Racing action returns on Wednesday August 19th for Hall of Fame Induction Night. Berry Wins Again on Triple E Insulators Night in MoTown

As the Month of July wraps up its hard to think in a few weeks weekly racing action will be completed before the hopes of getting all fall specials in looms. Marshalltown Speedway did exactly that as they wrapped up the month of July on a very beautiful Friday Night for Triple E Insulators Night at the Races.

One Hundred Twenty One cars signed in to tame the high banked quarter mile race track located on the Central Iowa Fairgrounds. Fourteen MADCRA Mod Lites, 30 IMCA Hobby Stocks, 19 IMCA Sport Mods, 22 IMCA Stock Cars, 15 IMCA Late Models and 21 IMCA Modifieds.

First feature of the night was the 15 lap MADCRA Mod Lites feature event. Cliff Barber driving Kevin Grisham's car led the first lap but it was Joel Huggins known as "Huggie Bear" grabbing the top spot on lap two. Huggins wrestled the lead away and fend off several challenges from Mike Morrill to take his first feature win in Motown. Morrill finished second, Points leader Randy Bryan finished third, Ben George was fourth and Travis Stensland was fifth.

Ryan King wrestled the early in the 18 lap IMCA Sport Mods feature but the caution came out on lap two. The caution came out when Austin Kaplan blew the transmission exiting turn four leaving debris all over the front stretch. King held off Joseph Luethje and Kyle Olson. King led until the caution came out again on lap four for Cory Petotnik and Jared Dew in turn four. Johnathon Logue got a great restart and took over the race lead. The caution came out on lap eight when Dennis Stewart spun in turn two and then again on lap nine when Luethje and Dew spun turn two. Logue held off King and Kyle Olson and appeared to be heading on to the easy win until the caution was displayed one final time on lap 14 for Pestotnik, Dew and Brian Lepa in turn two. Logue held off any challenges to take his second win in Motown this season. Olson finished runner-up honors, eleventh place starter Garrett Nelson finished third, Travis Peterson was fourth and King was fifth.

In the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event, Nathan Ballard led from start to finish fending off several early challenges from Jacob Floyd. Lap two saw a caution when Scott Ellis spun in turn four. Ben Newhouse spun in turn one on lap five also bring out a caution. Ballard was not fazed and got great restarts however the caution came out again on lap ten, not once but twice. First caution was for Mike Kincaid, Gary Pfantz and Tom Killen spin exiting turn four. The restart saw Scott Durlin, Newhouse, William Klosterman, Matt Wahl and Shane Palmer get togther exiting turn four. Ballard went on to claim the win ahead of Floyd, Braden Richards, Solomon Bennett and Tyler Ollendieck.

Bobby Hansen grabbed the early lead in the 20 lap IMCA Late Models feature before the caution came out on lap four. The caution came out when Thomas Stevens spun in turn two and then again on the restart when a buried infield tire was ripped out of the ground. Hansen held off Curtis Glover and Darrel DeFrance on the restart and continued to lead until lap eight when Glover took the lead over. Glover settled out front until the caution came out on lap 11 for Randy Faux spinning top side of turn four. Glover went on to take the feature event. Luke Pestka wrestled the second place ahead of DeFrance. Logan Duffy and Hansen finished fourth and fifth respectively. DeFrance heads into next week with a three point gap over Duffy which means it will come down to the final checkered next week.

The Class Too Tough Too Tame is the IMCA Stock Cars and they were up next for their 18 lap feature event. Jason Hall led the first lap before the caution came out when Jim Ball Jr slid off turn two. Kenzie Ritter got great restart and grabbed the lead away from Hall before Dallon Murty worked his way through the field. Dallon Murty grabbed the race lead on lap nine and after fending off Kenzie Ritter pulled away just bit. Dallon Murty took his second win at Marshalltown ahead of Damon Murty, Kenzie Ritter, David Atcher and Tyler Pickett.

A friend of the Trackside Report, Josh Capalla finally got a full night of racing in and got to see the checkered flag crossing the finish line in fifteenth place, he did a great job in only fourth night behind the wheel.

Final feature of the night was the 20 lap IMCA Modifieds feature event. Garrett Wilson grabbed the race lead but on lap three jumped the cushion in turns three and four allowing Tom Berry Jr to take over the race lead. Berry pulled away and never really looked back until the caution came out on lap fifteen. The caution was for Ronnie Hults going off top of turn three and then on the restart for Jared Van Deest spinning in turn one collecting Hults. Berry held off Scott Simatovich and Anthony Hofbauer to take the win. That is win number six and third in a row at MoTown. Hofbauer, Tim Ward, Ronn Lauritzen and Scott Simatovich round out the top five.

Night of racing was completed in less than three hours as the first heat race took green at 7:30pm and the final checkered flag was waived at 10:23pm.
