Larry Wollam Season Championship Night, Rick Brown's Final Night

Well all i can say about this night is that mother nature gave us dry weather and allowed us to go racing but she made it feel like it was the frostbuster (which got rained out back in april). So a nice cool night at the races brought great racing action in all classes.

This night was a night we honored Larry Wollam, who passed away in 1999 and we have honored him every year starting in 1999 on season championship night but as this night we were bring the end to a track point championships it also meant we were going to witness a driver's final night.

"The Flyin' Farmer" Rick Brown would make it his final night behind the wheel of a race car. Rick started racing in 1988 in the then hobby stock/bomber class and ran that for 3 years then moved up to a stock car but started out in a chevy. In 1993, Rick would begin to pilot the ford thunderbird around and he would get 107 IMCA Sanctioned wins, 122 stock car wins, 3 hobby stock wins and win 5 track championships at Marshalltown. Rick will trully be missed on the race track, he saids he will still go to the races. Tommy Thompson joked around that he has been racing 36 years and still don't want to hang it up. lol

Okay now on to the race action recap. Each feature would have an added 5 laps and no b-features were run so it was to the features right away.

First feature of the night was the O'Reilly Auto Parts Mod Lites for 20 laps. Tim Hennigar would start on the pole and he would take advantage and jump out and not look back in the feature as it would go green-to-checkered. Hennigar would go on and take his 3 win for track points, 4th win at Marshalltown this year, Hennigar would also be crowned the 2010 track champion. Josh May was 2nd, Mike Morrill was 3rd, Dusty Masolini was 4th and Joel Huggins was 5th.

Up next in feature competition was the 17 lap Junction Bar & Grille IMCA Hobby Stocks. Devin Smith and Michael Murphy would lead them to the green. Murphy would lead the first 3 laps but Smith would make a move and make the pass on lap 5 and go on and take the win in a feature that would also go green-to-checkered. For Smith it would be his 8th win at Marshalltown and he would be crowned 2010 track champion. Murphy would take 2nd, Eric Larson was 3rd, Calvin Dhondt was 4th and Josh Saunders was 5th.

The Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Sport Mods were up next for 20 laps. Scott Davis and Eric Flander would lead them to the green. After have 2 features go green-to-checkered this feature would start out with a caution as Jason Severance would spin in turn 2 bring out the caution before 1 lap was completed. On the restart, Flander would jump to the race lead but Davis would stay in tow and infact would get by Flander on lap 4, Flander look to be going backwards for some reason. Cayden Carter was moving up too after starting 3rd, he would get by Flander as well and then battle with Davis for the lead. On lap 5, Shawn Simatovich spun in turn 2 bring out the caution. On the restart, Carter would get a good start and be able to pass Davis. The only thing slowing Carter and Davis in the end was lap traffic. Carter would go on and take his 6th win of the year at Marshalltown, Davis would finish 2nd and take the 2010 track championship. Finishing behind Carter and Davis was Jake Strayer, Geoff Olson and Gatlin Leytham.

The Central Vintage Association was up next for their 9 lap feature. Wade Russell would take the lead and lead all 9 laps to take the win. Austin Russell was 2nd, Mark David was 3rd and Jim Klippingwas 4th.

Next was the Aaron's IMCA Stock Cars for 23 laps before they would go racing we would see Rick Brown parade the field around the race track before he would fall back into his starting spot. Dustin Smith and Trent Murphy would lead them to the green. Before 1 lap was completed though, Dusty Vis would spin in turn 4. On the restart, Murphy would take control of the top spot but he and the field would see another caution come out on lap 4 when Trevor Titus would stop in the bottom of turn 2. Murphy still wouldn't have problems on the restart and begin to pull away and would start hitting lap traffic right around halfway. On Lap 16, Damon Murty would go off the top of turn 1&2. The top 3 on the restart would be Murphy, Smith and Jeff Wollam. Murphy would continue to lead, the final race caution came out on lap 20 when Murty spun out in turn 2 this would send Murty to the pits. Murphy wouldn't let the cautions affect him as he was able to hold off Smith for the win, it would be his 5th win at Marshalltown this year. Smith would take the track championship. Wollam would take 3rd, Jay Schmidt was 4th, Andy Bryant was 5th and Rick Brown for the final time was 6th.

The final feature of the night was the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel IMCA Modifieds 25 lap feature. Jimmy Gustin and Jon Snyder would lead them to the green. Snyder would get a really good job and begin to pull away but cautions on lap 2, 3 and 5 would prevent that early. The first caution on lap 2 was for Dave Pries spinning in turn 2, the 2nd caution on lap 3 was for Ronn Lauritzen in turn 4 and the final caution on lap 5 was for Luke Wanninger in turn 4. Snyder wouldn't let those cautions affect him as he would pull away from the rest of the field and the only thing that slowed Snyder was lap traffic. Snyder would go on and take the win, his 3rd win of the year. Richie Gustin would finish 2nd, Jimmy Gustin would come home 3rd but win the track championship. Brett Ladehoff and Rod Clement rounded out the top 5.

Racing action came to and end at 10:02pm.
