VanDenBerg, Songer and Smith Cash IN Big On Night #1 of World Nationals
By Jeremy Fox
Marshalltown, Iowa (September 20th, 2013) –
The much anticipated event roared to life on Friday Night after mother
nature washed out practice on the Thursday Night Cookies BBQ Sauce
Kickoff. There was 193 cars from nine different states and one
providence in Canada represented on opening night of the 7th Annual
World Nationals.
After eight heats and four b-features settled
the field down to 24 cars it was time for the 20 lap IMCA Sport Mod
feature. Track Champion Eric Elliott jumped to the early lead in the
feature meanwhile they were going two and three wide behind him racing
for position. Elliott saw Carter VanDenBerg sneak by on lap five,
VanDenBerg then checked out from the field until the caution waived on
lap 16 for debris in turn four. Then on the restart when several cars
made contact together in turn two. VanDenBerg got a great restart and
tried to pull away only to see the yellow fly two more times forcing a
green-white-checkered finish. On the final restart, VanDenBerg had to
battle with Tim Current and coming to the checkered those two made
contact on the exit of turn four. VanDenBerg took the win with Current
coming across in second. However in post-race tech inspection Current
was disqualifed for illegal tires. Travis Peterson was then credit with
second, Doug Smith started 21st and found his way to a third place
finish, While Brian Efkamp and North Dakota's Justin Medler rounded out
the top five.
Eric Stanton grabbed the early lead in the IMCA
Hobby Stock feature but it was Devin Smith grabbing the lead away on lap
three after working his way through the field from his fifth starting
spot. Smith continued to lead after a caution on lap six and lap ten.
However then Smith was noticed to have a rear shock not working as he
had Stanton and Jamie Songer on his back bumper. This time, Smith's rear
shock caused him problems and that allowed Jamie Songer to sneak by and
grabbed the lead just before the caution on lap 13. Songer held on to
win with Stanton in the runner up spot. John Watson worked his way from
eleventh to third, Benji Irvine finish fourth while Smith fell back to
fifth spot.
In the IMCA Stock Cars feature, it was Todd Retizler
grabbing the lead but just after the completion one lap the caution
flew when John Heinz and Curt Hook got together on the front stretch.
Robert Stofer took over the lead until lap four as Donavon Smith worked
his way from ninth to take the lead away. Smith checked out and grabbed
the win over Jordan Grabouski, Brian Irvine, Kyle Vanover and Damon
Murty.
Modifieds ran two sets of heat races on Friday Night with
the top ten in points from the heat finishes being locked in to the
feature for Saturday Night. Round one heat winners were Jon Snyder,
Brian Mullen, Jacob Murray, Adam Larson, Mike Mullen, Shawn Kilgore,
Chris Abelson and Justin O'Brien. Round two heat winners were Dustin
Smith, Richie Gustin, Kyle Brown, Kurt Kile, Troy Cordes, Ryan Ruter and
Benji LaCrosse. Last Chance Races will be ran on Saturday along with a
50 lap feature in the Modifieds.
Also on Saturday Night there
will be a complete show for the IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods and
IMCA Hobby Stocks plus the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks make an
