DeFrance Wins In Front of Hometown Crowd and Stanton Remains Perfect in MoTown

DeFrance Wins In Front of Hometown Crowd and Stanton Remains Perfect in MoTown
by Jeremy Fox

Friday night made my third appearance since the Frostbuster to the Marshalltown Speedway because the Iowa State Fair Speedway had a night off because the World Pork Expo was taking place at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. It was Karl Performance and Casey's General Stores Night and 94 cars signed in to tame the high banked quarter mile including 14 IMCA Late Models for their first of eight Weekly Racing Appearances.

Hometown fans got excited when Darrel DeFrance won the IMCA Late Models meanwhile parents of Tim Ward was happy to hear he picked up the Modifieds on Friday Night. Damon Murty took Stock Cars, Travis Peterson in SportMods, Eric Stanton remains perfect in Hobby Stocks and Joe Glick won Mod Lites.

First feature of the night was the 12 lap Mod Lites feature event and it was "Huggie Bear" Joel Huggins taking the early lead but Joe Glick took the spot away on lap three. Glick and Huggins ran one and two until a caution came out just after the completion of lap six for Justin Rankin and Larry Sorenson in turns one and two. Rankin spun and Sorenson tried to avoid contact but clipped the front bumper sending Sorenson rolling, both would exit from their cars. Glick did not let that faze him as he would lead the remaining laps and take win number two at MoTown. Mike Morrill came home in runner up spot with Randy Bryan in third, Huggins in fourth and Kevin Grisham in fifth.

Neil Follett led the first two laps in the IMCA SportMods 18 lap feature before Travis Peterson took the spot away on lap three. Peterson pulled away but the only caution came out on lap 15 when Andy Edwards spun in turn two forcing a three lap shootout to the finish. Peterson held off any challenge to take his first win at Marshalltown. Sam Wieben, Cory Rose, Jared VanDeest and Ethan Braaksma rounded out the top five.

In the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature, it was Tyson Overton grabbing early lead but Ryan Grochala, regular at the Iowa State Fair Speedway, worked his way from tenth starting spot to take the top spot on lap four. Grochala was followed by August Bach to the number two spot and then a caution came out on lap eight for Overton going off the top side of turn one and two. Grochala, Bach and Eric Stanton restarted top three and it was Grochala holding on the top spot but another caution came out on lap 11 for David Simpson in turn two. Stanton moved pass Bach for second and began to challenge Grochala for the lead but Grochala held off Stanton until coming out of turn four to the checkered as Stanton edged out Grochala to remain perfect on the regular season at Marshalltown. Bach was third, Gary Pfantz was fourth and Dustin Graham was fifth.

Matt Deaton wrestled the lead away from Kevin Balmer in the IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature event but it was Steve Meyer taking the lead away on lap five, meanwhile last week's feature winner Jeff Wollam was working his way back through the field after he slipped back to 13th.  Meyer began to contend with Tuesday's Winner Damon Murty and held Murty off until lap 13 when Murty took the lead away. Murty went on to win 203rd career IMCA Stock Car feature win ahead of Steve Meyer, Tyler Pickett, Jeff Wollam and Donavon Smith.

Eric Elliott took advantage of his front row starting position as he grabbed the early lead in the 20 lap IMCA Modifieds feature event but the caution came out on lap two for Tyler Gross going off the top side of turn two. Elliott and the field saw the caution come out again on lap three for Rod Clement coming to a stop on the run off road and then on lap six for Austin Emry in turn four. Elliott saw Tom Berry Jr and Jenae Gustin on his back bumper on the restart and he was able to hold them off but Harcourt's Tim Ward wrestled the lead away from Elliott on lap nine. Ward cruised on to the easy win making his parents happy back home in Chandler, Arizona. Richie Gustin finished in the runner up spot, Berry was third. Elliott fell back to fourth and Jacob Murray was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the 25 lap IMCA Late Models feature event and it was hometown favorite Darrel DeFrance redrawing the pole and he took advantage but was slowed early when the only caution came out on lap three for Mark Hurst, Dirk Hamilton and Kyle Krampe in turn four. DeFrance got a great restart and pulled away never being challenged the remaining 22 laps as he took the win in front of his hometown fans. Jerry King came home second, Justin Mitchell was third, Paul Nagle was fourth and Curtis Glover was fifth.

Racing action finished up at 9:40pm with thunderstorms north of the speedway. Racing continues at Marshalltown Next Friday Night meanwhile the IMCA Late Models make their next appearance on Friday July 1st.
