Cooney, Thompson Shute, Murty, Gladson, Anderson and Sather Win at ISF Friday Night
Des Moines, Iowa (May 3rd, 2014) – With Friday Night races at the Marshalltown Speedway getting rained out, I decided to make my first visit to the Iowa State Fair Speedway fueled by Casey's. This year marked a group of new leadership lead by Tony Moro, John Pat Dorrian and Eric Lundstrom, they were greeted with 95 race teams signed in to do battle for the second night of weekly points at ISF.
Blake Miller lead the opening two laps in the IMCA Hobby Stock feature but it was Tommy Killen Jr grabbed the lead away on lap three. Shortly after the caution came out when Kenny Hay went on a spin cycle when a tire went down. On the restart, it was Miller grabbing the lead back only to see Killen come back to take again on lap five. Right behind Miller and Killen was Shannon Anderson and Eric Stanton, Anderson came up and grab the lead away on lap seven and pulled away to take his second win of the season at ISF. Killen, Miller, Chad Legere and Kevin Fee rounded out the top five.
In the IMCA Stock Car feature it was Fort Dodge's Lance Deal leading the first four laps before last week's feature winner Damon Murty took the lead away on lap five. Murty went on to lead the remaining laps after the caution on lap six to take his second win of the season at ISF. Don Wear came home second, Michael Johnston was third, Randy Killen was fourth and Trent Jeanes was fifth.
Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks feature was up next and it was Matt Moro, driving his dad Tony's truck, grabbing the early lead but on lap three Moro bobbled in turn four and opened the door that allowed Brad Moyer to sneak by for the lead. A Lap later the red flag came out when Moro spun out in turn three and collected the trucks driven by Carl Moyer, Ed Nelson, AJ Nelson, Lou Siplot and Bryan Spangler, only Spangler was able to continue. After the clean up it was Brad Moyer still leading only to see the caution come out on lap six for debris in turn two. Moyer did not let that bother him as he continued to lead and appeared to be heading on to the win but Kevin Sather worked his way to the back side of Moyer coming to the white flag. On the last lap, Moyer bobbled just enough to allow Sather by to take the checker. Rick Clark, Pat Fagen and Bret Moyer rounded out the top five.
Andy Tiernan grabbed the early lead in the IMCA Sport Mods feature but the caution came out when Tyler Gross and Rick Gladson got together in turn three. Tiernan continued to lead only to see the caution come out again on lap four when Ben Kates lost driveshaft in turns three and four. Tiernan had to contend with Glenn Gladson Jr and Jerid Ratzke on the restart and it was Gladson getting by, Tiernan headed to the pits with some mechanical issues. The caution came out two more times on laps eight and nine but Gladson was able to hold off and lead the remaining laps to take the win. Brandon Brinton worked his way to second but was disqualifed in post-race tech inspection that moved up Jerid Ratzke to second. Matt Webb was third, DJ Robinson was fourth and Rick Gladson was fifth.
Todd Shute started on the pole in the IMCA Modified feature and lead the entire race, that went green-to-checkered, to take the win. Rookie Cole Ferguson founded his way to the runner up spot. Josh Gilman came home third, Last week's feature winner Randy Havlik was fourth and Casey Greubel was fifth.
IMCA Late Models 18 lap feature was out next and it was the racing veteran Darrel DeFrance grabbing the early lead. DeFrance lead the first eight laps by racing around on the bottom in turns one and two and the top in three and four. However Todd Cooney was working the top side and grabbed the lead away from DeFrance on lap nine. The only race caution came out on lap 12 when Jeff Aikey spun around in turn four. Cooney held off any challenges on the restart to take his second consective checkered of the season at ISF. DeFrance, Ryan Griffith, Jeremy Grady and Craig Jacobs came home second through fifth respectively.
Final feature of the night was the IMCA Racesaver IMCA Sprints feature. Matt Stephenson lead the opening lap but it was Tyler Thompson grabbing the lead away on lap two. Kelly Graham experience troubles resulting in the caution coming out on laps two and three. Thompson pulled away meanwhile Stephenson battled with Matt Moro for second. Stephenson and Moro got together in turn four on lap eight but went to the tail. The race was shorten from 15 laps to 12 laps and it was Thompson taking the win. Moro worked his way back up to take second, Stephenson was third. Keoni Texeira was fourth and Antony Guiffre was fifth.

Webster City, Iowa (May 3rd, 2014) – For the second consective week the Hamilton County Speedway was up able to continue its 76th season. There was 82 race teams signed in to race the half mile race track and the track was rough in turn three and but produced some great side-by-side racing all night.
Danny Sassman lead the first two laps in the Oberhelman Motorsports IMCA Sport Compact Feature. On lap three, Sassman and last week's winner Tommy Beekman made contact sending Sassman in to the outside wall. Beekman took the lead and never looked back to take his second win of the young season. Lyle Oberhelman finish second, Nick Hogan finish third, Nick Weiss was fourth and Kalan Guthrie was fifth.
The Conley's Trucking IMCA Sport Mods feature saw Levi Carlberg of Iowa Falls grab the early lead but Roland's Matt Lettow took the lead away on lap three. Lettow went on to take the win despite a pair of cautions on lap five and ten. Carter Vandenberg came home second, Aaron Benson was third, Shawn Albers was fourth and Brandon Toftee was fifth.
Bryce Sommerfeld started on the Outside front row in the Casady Brothers Implement IMCA Hobby Stock 15 lap feature. David Rieks grabbed the lead away from Sommerfeld on lap three and appeared to be heading on to the win but the caution came out when Sommerfeld spun around in turn four. On the restart, Rieks had to contend with Randy Embrey and Craig Graham. Embrey grabbed the lead away on lap 13 and went on to take the win. Rieks finished second, Graham was third, Justin Nehring was fourth and Cory Roe was fifth.
Mary Ann's Speciality Foods Stock Cars 18 lap feature saw Cody Frierichs lead hte first six laps but then the caution came out when Jason Minnehan blew up and came to a stop on the backstretch. On the restart it was Steve Meyer grabbing the lead. Meyer lead until lap 14 when Lance Deal took the lead away. Deal went on take the win over Meyer, Travis Prochaska, Craig Berhow and Robbie Merkle.
Chalfant Plumbing and Neighbors Heating and Cooling IMCA Late Models 20 lap feature saw Ryan Griffith lead the first lap but Todd Cooney grabbed the lead away on lap two. Cooney never looked back as not even lap traffic would slow him down as he went on to take his first win at HCS and second win of the weekend. Griffith finished second and Darrel DeFrance was third. Jason Hahne and Jeremy Grady finish fourth and fifth respectively.
Final feature of the night was the George White Chevrolet IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature. Devon Havlik grabbed the early lead and continue to hold through the four early race cautions. On each restart though it was Nick Roberts from Des Moines putting on the show. As he started nineth and worked his way to second by the time of the final restart on lap eight. Roberts eventually grabbed the lead away on lap 11 but the final nine laps it got excited as Greg Elliott chase down Roberts and showed his nose to the youngster but Roberts held him off. Roberts took the win for the second week in a row. Elliott was second, Mark Elliott was third, Havlik was fourth and Rookie Coty Albers was fifth.
