Luellen Brothers Win Again In Motown

Luellen Brothers Win Again in Motown
By Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (August 15th, 2014) – With the radar looking questionable all day many was doubtful that racing was going to happen Friday Night but Mother Nature cooperated and racing continued at the Marshalltown Speedway.

First feature of the night was the Mod Lites 15 lapper. Travis Stensland jumped out to the early lead from his inside row two starting spot. Stensland continued to lead until the first caution came out on lap four for Steven Kennedy spinning in turn four. On the restart, Stensland saw Josh May and Tim Hennigar on the back bumper and it was May that battled Stensland out for the lead. The caution came out again on lap seven first for Amber Coffman in turn two and then on the restart when Dustin Marshall rolled in turn one. May was not letting that bother him but the caution came out again on lap nine this time for Stensland lost the handle and collecting Jimmy May, May clipped Stensland senting his car end of end before landing on his wheels. Josh May lead the remaining laps including through two cautions on lap 11. Josh May took the win over Tim Hennigar, Andy Hennigar, DJ Schmalzried and Dusty Masolini.

Mitchell Thomas led the opening lap in the 12 lap IMCA Hobby Stocks feature and then Tyson Overton edged ahead on lap two. Austin Luellen made it a three car battle for the lead on lap three, Luellen lead at the line and settled into the top spot by himself on lap four. Dustin Elliott and Jamie Schirm got together in turn one on lap five bringing out the caution and then a lap later Overton and Gary Pfantz got together. Luellen lead the remaining laps to take his eighth win of the season at Motown. Eric Stanton was second and Jamie Schirm worked his way back up to finish third. Calvin Dhondt finished fourth in his first night out and John Watson was fifth.

After a caution forced a complete restart in the 18 lap Big Eight Tyre Center IMCA Northern SportMods feature, it was Ryan Ashton taking the lead from his pole postiton. The next handful of laps was tough for the field to get through as the caution came out four times on lap two, three and four with Ashton still leading. Ashton lost the lead to Shawn Rittter on lap six and shortly after the caution came out again for Justin Medler in turn two. The final caution came out on lap 11 for debris on the front stretch. Ritter had Ashton and Clint Luellen on his back bumper with Ritter holding on to the lead every lap. Luellen found the outside to his liking as he beat Ritter on the last lap to take the win. Ritter, Jenae Gustin, Adam Shelman and Ashton rounded out the top five.

The caution came out before a single lap was completed in the 18 lap IMCA Stock Cars feature. On the restart it moved Dave Atcher to the outside front row and Atcher took full advantage as he took the lead on lap one. Shortly after the caution came out again when Robbie Merkle, Don Vis, Steve Meyer and Donavon Smith all got together in turn three. Atcher continued to lead despite several challenges from Michael Jaennette but Damon Murty worked his way up and raced Atcher for the lead on lap six but fell short. Murty grabbed the lead on lap seven and began to pull away. Only thing slowing Murty was the lap traffic late in the race, Murty took the win over Atcher and Jaennette. Smith worked his way back up to finish fourth and Scooter Dulin was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the 20 lap IMCA Modifieds feature. Andrew Kinser lead the first lap after Joel Bushore jumped the cushion in turns three and four. On lap two Kinser, Bushore and Jake Strayer went three wide for the lead. Strayer took the lead and pulled away only to see the caution come out three times for debris. After the final caution on lap 12, Strayer saw Racer Hulin and Ronn Lauritzen behind him. Hulin grabbed the lead away on lap 13 and went on to take the win. Strayer was second, Ronn Lauritzen was third, Adam Larson was fourth and Tyler Droste was fifth.

Next Friday starts a busy two weeks at the speedway as it will be Johnny Ray's Sports Bar and Grille Night. Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing at 7:30pm.
