Sanders chalks up USMTS win #24 at Marshalltown

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa-Rodney Sanders returned to his winning ways Wednesday night as he scored the United States Modified Touring Series victory at the Marshalltown Speedway.

A runner-up in the last four rounds of the Hunt for the USMTS Casey's Cup, Sanders avoided trouble early on as several racers ahead of his fell by the way side and then used a late-race caution to make his move.

Cade Dillard, who climbed into the USMTS Rookie of the Year points lead for the first time this season Sunday night, held off polesitter Joe Duvall at the start and led the first four laps until the first yellow flag of the race appeared.

On the restart, Duvall and third-running Stormy Scott made contact on the exit of turn, which resulted in Scott retiring from the race while Duvall was forced to restart at the tail of the field.

With 10 laps in the books, Zack VanderBeek looked to the inside of Dillard but was unable to make the pass and settled back into second while Sanders, who started ninth, slipped by John Allen for the third spot.

Thick lapped traffic throughout the middle of the contest allowed Dillard to stretch out his cushion over VanderBeek to ten car-lengths but a third caution on lap 20 erased the leader's advantage.

The yellow waved again on lap 24 and Sanders blasted by both VanderBeek and Dillard on restart, but another quick caution reset the line-up back to the previous order.

Sanders got by VanderBeek on the final restart of the night, and then battled side by side with Dillard for two laps before sliding up into the high groove in front of Dillard to claim the lead on lap 27.

From there, Sanders seemed to find another gear and the defending USMTS national champion pulled away from the field for his 24th win of the 2014 campaign and tying him with Ryan Gustin (2011) for the second-most wins in a season and six wins shy of matching Kelly Shryock's mark of 30 wins in 2006.

It also gave the 24-year-old from Happy, Texas, his 42nd career USMTS triumph, tying him with Tommy Myer for fourth on the all-time wins list.

While Dillard settled for the runner-up finish, Brad Dierks made a last-lap last-corner pass of VanderBeek to finish fourth with Shryock coming home in the fifth spot.

Daniel Hilsabeck was sixth, Johnny Scott was seventh and John Allen held on for an eighth-place results. Duvall clawed his way back to ninth from the back of the pack after his lap-4 encounter and Dereck Ramirez rounded out the top-10 at the finish line.

Friday finds the mud-slinging monsters back at the Chateau Raceway in Lansing, Minn., before heading to the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., on Saturday. The pentathlon of power wraps up at the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa, on Sunday, Aug. 31.

Murty, Gustin collect Iron Man checkers in Marshalltown

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa-The Iron Man Challenge featuring USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods invaded the high banks of the Marshalltown Speedway on Wednesday night, but it was two regulars who defended their home turf.

In the USRA B-Mod main event, Dan Wheeler, who came into Wednesday's action as the Iron Man points leader, started on the front row.

Wheeler jumped out to an early lead in the feature, but his lead was quickly erased with an early caution. As the field started to sort itself out, Jenae Gustin found herself battling alongside Wheeler for the top spot.

Gustin, the younger sister of two-time USMTS national champion Ryan Gustin, wiggled her way through the field and took over the lead with six laps complete.

Winning by more than a straight-away, Gustin claimed the checkers and $600 winner's share of the purse on her home dirt followed by Jacob Bleess, Joey Schaefer, Jared Van Deest and Cory Crapser. Wheeler held on for sixth.

The USRA Stock Cars saw a clash of titans Wednesday night. Starting on pole for the feature event was the "Chelsea Charger," Damon Murty. What looked as if Murty would run away with the win, a mid-race caution brought the field back together.

This opened the door for title contender Mitch Hovden to take over the top spot. On the restart, Murty was able to drive away from Hovden and the rest of the field.

Leading every lap of the feature, Murty took the $750 top prize. Hovden, Steve Meyer, Tom Schmitt and Dillon Anderson rounded out the top five.

The weekend wraps up with both classes in action again on Sunday, Aug. 31, at the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa.
