After a few rainouts on Saturday and the weather looking sketchy, I chose to spend my Saturday night off at home. That led into Sunday. As I was sitting around watching the NASCAR race from Michigan on Amazon Prime Video, I said to myself, Maybe take in a Sunday night race somewhere. So at 2:15 p.m., I decided to grab my camera, clipboard, and scanner radios and make a 2-hour drive to Mason City for racing action. I arrived around 4:30p and walked back in my house at 11:45p.
Sunday night at the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Mason City Motor Speedway was the World's Collide Showdown featuring the USRA Kevko Northern Lights Modified Series presented by Real Racing Wheels and the USRA KS Engineering Iron Man Stock Car Series driven by Terminator Chassis. USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks, and Outlaw Mini Mods joined in to tame the 1/3-mile high-banked oval. A total of one hundred and twelve cars checked in on Sunday night, including 33 Iron Man Stock Cars and 19 Northern Lights Modifieds. The final checkered flag was waived at 9:33p.
Todd Staley and the track team stayed ahead of the racing surface and tried to produce a fantastic racetrack. That proved to be the case because after the Outlaw Mini Mods feature, they took the road grader out and did some track work to produce a fantastic racing surface for the remaining 4 features. That plan worked out because there were fantastic battles throughout the fields. Great job by Bryan Denekas and Braxton Flattery on the announcing races.
The Outlaw Mini Mod Series 15-lap feature was up first; Wyatt Medlin jumped out to the early race lead but received heavy pressure from Dalton Faber. Faber grabbed the top spot away on lap four. Shortly after the caution came out, Lukas Kloster came to a stop at the top of turn two. Faber maintained the top spot until lap six, when Medlin took back over the lead. On lap seven, caution came out again when Kloster stopped again in turn two. Medlin held off Faber and Ben Mattick to claim the win. Mattick finished second, Faber was third, Brent Tweed was fourth, and Nathan Kilwine finished fifth.
After a brief track work session including the road grader, next up was the USRA Hobby Stock 20-lap feature event. Zac Smith outwrestled Joshua Monson for the early race lead. Smith began to pull away and looked to be heading on to the feature win, only to see the caution come out on lap 12, forcing the field to bunch up again. The first caution on lap 12 was when Parker Anderson and Oliver Monson got together on the front stretch; then on the following restart it came out for debris on the back stretch. Smith held on to the top spot until seventh-place starter Kolby Goepel powered his way to the race lead with two laps to go. Goepel hung on to take the feature win, with Smith finishing second, tenth-place starter Scott Dobel coming across in third, Joshua Monson finishing fourth, and Anderson rounding out the top five.
In the Window World of Mason City USRA B-Mods 20-lap feature, George Nordman grabbed the top spot from the outside front row starting spot. Nordman held off Colton Kramer, Oliver Sackett, Kaeden Bronner, and Ben Moudry. The caution came out on lap eight for debris on the back stretch. Nordman maintained the race lead, but the caution came out again on lap 12. Corey Klouse spun in turn two, and then on the restart Kramer spun in turn four, collecting Bronner, Jake Richards, Nate Albrant, Jayme Hiller, and Don Schaefer. Nordman hung on to capture the feature win. Richards, Moudry, Tianna Mithun, and Bronner rounded out the top five.
Next up was the KS Engineering USRA Iron Man Stock Car Series driven by Terminator Chassis 30-lap feature event, sponsored by Christie Door Company. Pat Graham got by Minnesota's Derek Green to take the early race lead. Graham's lead was short-lived as Brandon Hare took the lead away on lap four. The first caution came out on lap five when Chris Hovden spun in turn three, collecting Randy Foote, Todd Staley, Brock Badger, Weston Koop, Paul Conrad, and Todd Reitzler. Hare held off Graham and Green on the restart. The next caution came out on lap eight when Kevin Opheim spun Chance Larson in turn two. Hare led until lap ten, when Justin Luinenburg took the lead away. Luinenburg held off the rest of the field, and not even a lap 26 caution for debris would prevent him from capturing the win. Luinenburg became the 13th different winner in the reborn Iron Man Stock Car Series in 13 races this season. Hare finished a strong second, followed by Green, twelfth-place starter Chance Hollatz, and eighteenth-place starter Dylan Clinton. Green leads over Rodney Schweizer by 16 points and Graham by 27 points in the series points standings.
The final feature of the night was the USRA Kevko Northern Lights Modified Series 30-lap feature event. Rodney Sanders and Jacob Bleess led the field to the green flag; Bleess would manage to lead the first six laps. Sanders used the top side to take the top spot away on lap seven and started to pull away. However, when Sanders encountered heavy lap traffic, Bleess was able to gain ground and even used a lap car to his advantage and get by Sanders on lap 25. Bleess held on to claim the $2,000 feature win. Sanders, fresh off a USMTS win on Saturday in Louisiana, came home second. Brandon Davis finished third, Joe Chisholm was fourth, and Shadren Turner was fifth. Davis and Chisholm are tied at the top of the points standings with 278 points. Bleess is 6 points back, followed by Sanders, 26 points back.
