Smith wins the Hawkeye Challenge, Moffitt claims victory in Sprint Kings, and Gustin takes three wins in Boone.

Friday morning rain drowned the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway, getting roughly 3-4 inches of rain in a span of four hours. Even the humidity or the wind didn't help, as the grounds were very saturated all day long. Now on to Saturday, despite it being hot and humid, I made the decision to adventure over to the Boone Speedway for Thrive Hawkeye Challenge Night.

Before Iowa's Action Track could get to the Thrive Hawkeye Challenge Night, they had to finish up Farley's Pre-Owned Vehicles Smackdown Night from the prior week; once that was complete, then it was on to the Thrive Hawkeye Challenge Night. A total of two hundred and twelve cars signed in, including 11 Sprint Kings Sprints. At one of the intermission breaks, there was a candy toss for the kids. Racing Action started at 6p and was fantastic all night long right up to the final checkered flag that waved at 12:52a.

The first five features of the night were the June 14th make-up features; the first one up was the IMCA STARS Mod Lites 15-lap feature event. Jaxon Carr was scheduled to start fourth, but because the outside front row starter was not there, Carr moved to the front row, and he took advantage by grabbing the top spot. The only caution came out just after the completion of lap one when Ryder Hartley spun in turn two and Cole Paul in turn one. Carr was not fazed as he held off Ben George, Terry Brown, Bryan Zehm, and Charlie Brown on the restart. Carr led the way until George was able to wrangle the lead away on lap 12. George went on to take the feature win. Carr, Charlie Brown, Zehm, and Garrett Barber round out the top five. 

Next up was the IMCA Northern Sport Mods 18-lap make-up feature event. Johnathon Logue led the first eight laps before the caution came out when Jessiah Taylor spun in turn four. On the restart, eleventh-place starter Matt Avila took the top spot away from Logue and tried to pull away. Lap ten saw the caution come out when Dayton Swatek and Mike Smith got together in turns one and two. Avila got a fantastic restart, fending off Logue and Randy Havlik. The caution came out one more time on lap 15 when Hunter Clement spun in turn four. Avila went on to take his third feature win in Boone this season. Havlik came home second, tenth-place starter Cory Pestotnik finished third, Camdan Vincent was fourth, and twelfth-place starter Dusty Masolini took fifth. 

Jimmy Gustin started fourth, but by the end of lap one in the IMCA Modifieds 20-lap make-up feature event. Gustin would lead all the laps in the caution-free feature. Ninth-place starter Greg Elliott worked his way up to grab runner-up honors. Trevor Fitz took third, eleventh-place starter Jake McBirnie was fourth, and tenth-place starter Izac Mallicoat took fifth. 

Kyle Everts grabbed the top spot early in the IMCA Stock Cars make-up 20-lap feature event. The caution came out after lap 1 was scored, when Jay Schmidt, Josh Daniels, and David Smith spun entering turn one. Everts hung on to the top spot until lap four, when seventh-place starter Jimmy Gustin was able to work his way by. Just like the Modifieds, Gustin pulled away; the only thing slowing him down was the debris caution on lap six and the red flag when Jerry Gifford rolled off the top of turn three. Gustin went on to claim his second win of the night. Eleventh-place starter Devin Smith, Doug Smith, Everts, and eighteenth-place starter Johnathon Logue finished second through fifth, respectively.

The last of the make-up features was the 15-lap IMCA Hobby Stocks make-up. Mitchell McNeill led the first lap before Corey VanDerWilt wrestled the top spot away on lap two. VanDerWilt was chased by Solomon Bennett and eleventh-place starter Eric Knutson, but he was able to fend them off to capture his first win in Boone. Matt McDonald was able to capture second ahead of Knutson. Knutson settled for third, Will Smith finished fourth, and Bennett fell back to fifth. 

The Hawkeye Challenge featured 24 cars from six different classes. IMCA divisions had the points leader and the top three in passing points from the heat races as their representatives, while the Sprint Cars took the top four in passing points. Sprint Cars had to go 25 laps, Modifieds 23, Sport Mods 22, Mod Lites 22, Stock Cars 21, and Hobby Stocks 20, which means in this 25-lap race, the Hobby Stocks started five laps ahead of the Sprint Cars. Eric Knutson was officially the leader for the first 18 laps before Johnathon Logue took the lead away in his stock car on lap 19. Sport Mod rookie Mike Smith captured the lead with 2 laps to go as the sprint cars were making their way through the field. Smith went on to capture the overall win and the sport mod win. Logue finished second, capturing the Stock Cars; Owen Carlson finished third, capturing the Sprint Cars; Doug Smith was fourth; and Charlie Brown was the top Mod Lite and finished fifth. Knutson came across in eighth and captured the Hobby Stocks, while Izac Mallicoat captured the Modifieds with a fifteenth-place finish.

 
Now it's time for the regular night feature events. The first up was the IMCA STARS Mod Lites 15-lap feature event. Bryan Zehm grabbed the top spot early, fending off Dillon Bush. The first caution came out when Ryder Hartley spun in turn one on lap six; he did it again on lap eight, but in turn three. Zehm remained strong out front, but this time tenth-place starter Austin Gray worked his way into second and began to apply pressure. Gray took the lead away on lap 12. The last race caution came out on lap 13 when Garrett Barber nearly took a tumble in turn two and made contact with Bush, forcing him to spin out in turn two. Barber was able to keep it moving and got his spot back. Gray held off Zehm and Barber on the restart and went on to take his third win in Boone. Barber, Zehm, thirteenth-place starter Ben George, and twelfth-place starter Chaz Baca, driving Joel Huggins car, rounded out the top five.

Danny Concelman from Colorado Springs, Colorado, led the first lap of the IMCA Northern Sport Mods 18-lap feature event. Tyler Carey took the lead away on lap two, and Kenser Ellis grabbed the lead briefly on lap six. Ninth-place starter Cam Reimers worked his way through and took the top spot on lap nine. The only race caution came out on lap nine, when Ryan Leeman spun in turn one. Reimers held off Carey, eleventh-place starter Mike Smith, Randy Havlik, and twelfth-place starter Matt Avila. Reimers went on to take his third feature win of the season. Smith came home second, Avila was third, Havlik finished fourth, and Carey was fifth.

Sprint Kings Sprints made their first-ever appearance at the Boone Speedway, and it was time for their 20-lap feature event. Brett Moffitt, a familiar face to Central Iowa, now calling Mooresville, North Carolina, home, returned to race. Moffitt outwrestled Tyler Thompson for the race lead early. The only caution came out on lap 2 when Logan Brown spun in turn two and Carl Wade spun to avoid making contact. Moffitt continued to lead the way but received pressure from Thompson. Moffitt was using the top side, and Thompson was on the bottom. Moffitt was finally able to get rid of Thompson and pull away, lapping most of the field to capture the win worth $1,000. Jackson Gray, a former Micro Sprint racer, came home second, Thompson fell back to third, Koddy Hildreth was fourth, and Owen Carlson was fifth.

In the IMCA Modifieds 20-lap feature event, Kaylin Lopez, driving a Zane DeVilbiss hot rod, captured the top spot early and was trailed by Matthew Meinecke. The first caution came out on lap 9 when Paul Nagle, running third at the time, spun in turn two. Lopez held off Meinecke and Cory Sauerman on the restart and looked to be heading on to the easy win until a caution came out on lap 16 for debris on the front stretch. Lopez held on to take his first feature win in Boone this season. Sauerman, Meinecke, twelfth-place starter Jake McBirnie, and thirteenth-place starter Trevor Fitz rounded out the top five.

Alan Van Gorp led the first lap of the IMCA Stock Cars 20-lap feature event before Jeff Mueller took the race lead away. Mueller continued to lead but received major pressure from Jay Schmidt. The first caution came out on lap six; Mueller held off Schmidt and Doug Smith on the restart. Twelfth-place starter Jimmy Gustin worked his way through the field and took the top spot away on lap nine. McBirnie followed Gustin's pursuit, coming from thirteenth place to second. Gustin remained strong out front, including 2 more cautions on laps 13 and 15. Gustin went on to take his third feature win of the night and third feature win in the stock cars at Boone. McBirnie settled for second, Mueller slipped back to third, Schmidt back to fourth, and fifteenth-place starter Devin Smith finished fifth.

The final feature of the night was the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15-lap feature event; the caution came out before lap one was completed. On the following restart, Jacob Monson led the first four laps before Skylar Pruitt took the lead away on lap five. The caution was waived twice again on lap six. Pruitt continued to lead until mechanical issues ended his night on lap ten, which handed the lead over to eleventh-place starter Eric Knutson, who had worked his way up to second. Knutson then held off twelfth-place starter Joe Doran late to take win number 3 of the year in Boone. Doran finished second, tenth-place starter Solomon Bennett in third, twenty-second-place starter Kolby Sabin in fourth, and Brett Maasdam in fifth.

Next up at the Boone Speedway is the 34th Annual Harris Clash presented by Wehrs Machine and Racing Products on Tuesday, June 24th. It's the first time the Harris Clash is at Iowa's Action Track since 1994, and for the first time, it will also include the IMCA Stock Cars. IMCA Modifieds are $4,000 to win; IMCA Sport Mods are $2,000 to win, and IMCA Stock Cars will be $3,000 to win. Pit gates open at 3:30p, grandstands at 5p, hot laps at 6p, the draw closes at 6:15p, and racing starts at 7p.

 
Saturday Night Series continues on Saturday, June 28th, for IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks, and IMCA Mod Lites. The Bat Wing Chassis Outlaw Mini Mods also make an appearance. Pits open at 4:30p, grandstands open at 5:30p, hot laps at 6p, and racing at 7p.
