Carter Takes HDT Checkers In Vinton

Since the inaugural race a few years ago i have made it my tradition to attend the first Karl Performance Hawkeye Dirt Tour presented by XSAN. For the 2nd year in a row the race would take place at the Benton County Speedway.

There was some very wild racing all night at the Benton County Speedway but the track was in great shape thanks to the hard work since sunday by Don Burkey. A total of sixty-eight cars signed in to do battle on the Tuesday Night. 21 IMCA SportMods, 14 IMCA Hobby Stocks, 6 IMCA Sport Compacts and 28 IMCA Modifieds.

During the heat races i was helping with the redraw and during the feature time i was helping Jen Turner, the HDT Series Scorer who was doing all the scoring duties tonight, with the scoring that was very interesting to say never did it before on a quarter mile but i did great so thanks for letting me help you Jen.

First feature of the night was the IMCA Sport Mods feature, Brennen Chipp jumped to the early race lead. Chipp had Damon Murty on his back bumper the entire way but then the only race caution came out for Dakota Sellers and Sam Wieben in turn 1. On lap 12, Nick Roberts made the move and took the lead away. Roberts held off Danny Dvorak late for the win. Jenae Gustin worked her way up to finish 3rd, Joel Rust was 4th and Chipp fell back to 5th.

Tyler Whalen lead from start to finish in the IMCA Sport Compacts despite several challenges early from his Father Bill Whalen Jr.. Merv Chandler slipped by Bill Whalen on lap 9 for 2nd. Travis Losenicky was 4th and AJ Whitten was 5th.

The Karl Performance Hawkeye Dirt Tour IMCA Modifieds had some troubles before the completion of lap 1 when Zach Less had trouble in turn 2 that would force a complete restart. Cayden Carter, started on the outside front row and jumped to the early race lead. Patrick Flannagan, Richie Gustin and Jimmy Gustin was 2nd through 4th through the caution on lap 4 for Matt Bonine in turn 2. Carter continued to lead even when Ed Thomas came to a stop on the backstretch on lap 10.

Next race caution came out on lap 15 when Jake Bowman went off turn 3. On lap 17 is where the real fireworks happened, Kyle Krampe stopped in turn bring out the yellow and on the restart, Richie Gustin made contact with Patrick Flannagan and it stacked up everybody else in turn 4 forcing another caution flag. Cayden Carter continued to remain out front and would even make it through the caution on lap 23. Carter took the win over Hometown Driver Scott Hogan, JD Auringer, Colt Mather and Mark Schulte.

Final feature of the night was IMCA Hobby Stock feature and it was Kyle Parizek leading the first 5 laps. Benji Irvine grabbed the lead away on lap 6 and appeared to be going on to the each win as he had a straightaway lead but he would go off turn 3 and 4 stay on the trottle and able to keep the lead. Irvine took the win with Nathan Ballard, Justin Wacha, Andy Coffman and Vince Buchholz finishing second through fifth.

Racing action returns this sunday at the Benton County Speedway in Vinton and the normal summer race times kick in to play with Hot Laps at 6pm and Racing to Follow.
