For Immediate Release:

Diercks Wins Again at the Southern Iowa Speedway on Supreme Lawn and Landscape Night
By Jeremy Fox

Oskaloosa, Iowa (May 22th, 2013) – Another Wednesday Night with very questionable weather all day and night. A few hours before race time mother nature dropped a good shower to help with the moisture on the race track but that didn’t prevent the race action from happening on Supreme Lawn and Landscape Night at the Races.

More items were auction off before and during the intermission for Mark Widmar including 2 seater sprint car rides with Tyler Groenendyk. Iowa Speedway’s Craig Armstrong was also in attendance on the night. Also the track crowned the most popular driver as four drivers were in the top 4 and they were Nathan Wood, Dustin Griffiths, Kris Walker and Bobby Greene.

Spencer Diercks grabbed the lead early and never looked back to take the win in the KBOE Radio IMCA Late Models 20 lap feature, that went green-to-checkered. Todd Cooney passed Nick Marolf on lap 2 to take the runner up position but couldn’t catch the 16 year old Diercks. Marolf finished 3rd, Darrel DeFrance finish 4th and Kurt Kile was 5th. Next race for the late models at SIS is on Wednesday June 19th.

“Hollywood” Brandon Banks started on the outside row in the Musco Lighting IMCA Modified feature. Banks grabbed the lead early and started to pull away but then caution waved when Steve Pumphrey spun in turn 4. Banks got a great restart and started to pull away and then caution waved again on lap 7 for debris. That caution didn’t faze, Banks as he again got a great restart and started to pull away until the caution waved again on lap 12 when Bill Gibson saw his engine expire. Banks looked to go on to the win but then a caution came out just after the white flag forcing a green-white-checkered finish. On the final restart, Banks slipped up on the exit of turn 4 that allowed Tyler Groenendyk to slip by. Groenendyk went on to take the win over Banks, Bill Davis Jr., Cayden Carter and Todd Hansen.

In the IMCA Sport Compacts feature it was Shawn Cooney leading the first 6 laps before he bobbled and that allowed John Whalen to slip by on lap 7. Cooney bobbled again on lap 9 that knocked him back to fourth. John Whalen took the win his 2nd of the season at SIS. Merv Chandler finished second, Bill Whalen Jr. finished third, Cooney was fourth and Trent Orwig was fifth.

Just as they were completing the first lap in the Pyramid Graphics and Sports IMCA Sport Mods feaure the caution waved when Curtis VanDerWal, Chris Larson, Levi Layman and Ben Kates got together on the front stretch. “Speedy Bray” Brayton Carter grabbed the early lead however and appeared to be pulling away but Brett Lowry chased him down. Lowry passed Carter on the last lap to take the win as the yellow flag would fly shortly after the checkered. Carter, Tyler Gross, Tyler Heckart and Eric Flander rounded out the top 5.

Erick Knutsen from Cedar Rapids lead the first 3 laps in the Pepsi Cola IMCA Hobby Stocks feature but he was passed by Dale Porter. Porter looked to be pulling away until the only race caution came out on lap 7 for Derek Hodges and Justin Hook in turn 2. Porter had the racing veteran Bill Bonnett on his back bumper and that is where Bonnett remained the rest of the distance. Bonnett tried several times to get by Porter but it was Porter holding on to take the win. Knutsen finish third, Dustin Griffiths was fourth and Donavon Nunnikhoven was fifth.

In the Budweiser IMCA Stock Car feature it was Brad Pinkerton leading the first 2 laps. Jeff Joldersma got by Pinkerton on lap 3 for the lead, Zack Vanderbeek and Damon Murty got by Pinkerton on lap 4 and 5 respectively. Joldersma held off several challenges from Vanderbeek and Murty to take th win. Vanderbeek finish 2nd with Murty in 3rd. Nathan Wood found his way up to 4th and Jason Cook was 5th.

Next Wednesday Night will be the Vital Men and John’s Tree Service IMCA Sport Mod Special with $750 to win in the  and a $250 bonus to drivers that have raced at least once this season at SIS making it a possible $1,000 to win. Also racing will be the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Hobby Stocks and IMCA Sport Compacts.   Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing at 7:30pm every Wednesday Night.
