Auringer Repeats as Hogan Memorial Champion; Stander, Wieben, Happel and Erger First Time Hogan Memorial Winners

When i was asked to return to the announcer's booth at Stuart for 2014 i was really glad to look at the Schedule and noticed that Sunday July 13th there was no racing scheduled......that made me happy. Why you say well the 20th Annual Hogan Memorial was taking place at the Benton County Speedway. The event started 20 years ago in the memory of Dick Hogan but after his wife Janet joined him in heaven the Hogan Family decided to make it the Hogan Memorial.

So want to thank Hogan Family for the hard work putting this event together each year, you are great family and always enjoy the opportunity to seeing you at the races.

The great list of sponsors helping the event out was:

On to the racing action, a total of 124 cars signed into race the 20th Annual Hogan Memorial. 45 IMCA Modifieds, 21 IMCA Stock Cars, 34 IMCA Northern SportMods, 18 IMCA Hobby Stocks and six BCS Micro Mods. There was great racing all night that only saw three cautions during the feature events.

First feature of the night was the 15 lap IMCA Northern SportMods event. Kurt Hogan jumped out to the early lead and appeared to be heading on to that win until Dysart's Sam Wieben chase him down. Wieben made the move and took the top spot away on lap 12 when Hogan bobbled that also allowed Brett Lowry to sneak by for second. Wieben went on to become the seventh different SportMod Hogan Memorial Winner. Lowry was second, Hogan was third, Tony Olson was fourth and Kip Siems was fifth.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature saw Nathan Ballard grabbed the lead on the opening lap only to see the caution come out when Brett Vanous came to a stop in turn four. On the restart, Jordan Peters had a flat tire which sent him rolling off the top of turn one and two bring out the red flag. Peters was okay but that ended his night. Ballard remained out front until Brian Happel finally found away around Ballard for the lead on lap four. Happel lead the remaining laps including through the only other caution on lap five to take his first Hogan Memorial win. Ballard held of Bill Bonnett and Benji Irvine for second. Jacob Keiser was fifth.

Don Erger led all ten laps in the BCS Micro Mods feature event becoming the first ever Hogan Memorial Winner. Buster Pate, Brandon Maitland, Brody Willett and Tristan Cordes rounded out the top five.

In the "Class to Tough To Tame" IMCA Stock Cars 15 lap feature it was Paul Shepherd grabbing the lead. Shepherd appeared to be heading on to the win for his first Hogan Memorial but Justin Stander was sneaking around the top side of the speedway. Stander and Shepherd battle it out to the checkered on the last lap and it was Stander becoming the first time winner of the Hogan Memorial.

Final feature of the night was the 40 lap 20th Annual Hogan Memorial for the IMCA Modifieds. After the drivers introductions were completed and the top two drivers in the heat races redrew it was time to go racing. Jeremy Mills and JD Auringer started on the front row and it was Auringer grabbing the lead on lap one. Richie Gustin worked his way by Mills for second and set his sights on Auringer but could never catch him.  Auringer encounter lap traffic on lap 16 and that was about the only thing that slowed him down until the half-way pit stop. However lap traffic allowed Hunter Marriott get by Gustin for second.

Top ten at the halfway pit stop was: Auringer, Marriott, Dan Chapman, Gustin, Mills, Kyle Brown, Cayden Carter, Troy Cordes, Mike Jergens and Josh Gilman.

Auringer led the entire second 20 lap segment to take his second Hogan Memorial Win, his other came in 2007. Hunter Marriott from Brookfield, Mo finished second meanwhile Dan Chapman finished third. Mike Jergens moved up 14 spots to finish fourth which gave him the Hard Charger Award. Gustin was fifth.

Thanks to Mick Trier, Angel Trier, Dana Benning, Ryan Clark, Kevin Kemp, Don Burkey, Brett Root, IMCA and the Hogan Family for the great hospitality.
