Gustin Family Takes Two Features at MoTown

Gustin Family Takes Two Features at MoTown
By Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (July 25th, 2014) – Mother Nature tried to wipe away racing from the Marshalltown Speedway Thursday Night and Friday Morning by dropping 2.5 inches of rain. However that did not faze track crews as they put together an amazing racing surface for what they were dealt and it produced amazing racing all night long.  The fans were able to participate as the ever so popular Spectator Eliminator took place after the features.

First feature of the night was the Mod Lites 15 lapper and it was Mike Kennedy grabbing the lead on lap one but Josh May worked his way up to second and then the lead on lap two. May saw the caution come out on lap four when Terry Brown experienced issues forcing him to a stop in turn three. May continued to lead but the caution came out again on lap five for Paul Nagle in turn two. May held on to take his second win of the season despite the final race caution on lap nine setting up a six lap dash. Charlie Brown came home second, Andy Hennigar was third, Jimmy May was fourth and Eric Hendrickson was fifth.

The 12 lap IMCA Hobby Stocks feature saw two and three wide racing through the feature. Brice Udelhoven started outside row two but by the end of lap one he was in the top spot. Udelhoven, John Watson and Eric Stanton began to break away from the rest of the field but the caution came out on lap eight for Dillion Million in turn two. On the restart, Eric Stanton tried to get by Udelhoven but failed on lap nine. Stanton was successful on lap ten when Udelhoven slipped up and left the door open. Stanton went on to take his fifth win of the season and four of the last five. Udelhoven, Watson, Garrett Eilander and Jason See rounded out the top five.

Big Eight Tyre Center IMCA Northern SportMods 18 lap feature went green to checkered. Jenae Gustin started on the outside front row and she managed to lead all 18 laps and have a full straight-away lead by the end and the only thing slowing her down was lap traffic. For Gustin that was win number three at Motown in 2014. Clint Luellen moved up six spots to finish second, Sam Wieben was third, Jared Van Deest was fourth and Jake McBirnie was fifth.

Don Vis jumped to the early lead in the IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature but it was Michael Jaennette taking it away on lap two. Jaennette began to pull away meanwhile behind him they were racing three and four wide for position. The only caution came out on lap ten when Trent Murphy saw somthing go wrong resulting in the car to  drop a lot of fluid on the backstretch. Jaennette held off Donavon Smith on the restart initial but on lap 12 it was Smith getting by Jaennette. Smith went on take his sixth win at Motown. Jaennette, Tracy Gienger, Robert Stofer and Robbie Merkle finished second through fifth respectively.

Rookie Jake Strayer grabbed the lead early in the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature. Strayer was calm and steady out front until Richie Gustin worked his way from 12th to second. Strayer, Gustin and Ronn Lauritzen battle for position laps 16 through 20. Strayer held the lead until the white flag lap when he saw Gustin take the lead away. Gustin manage to take his third win of the season despite a last lap move by second place finisher Ronn Lauritzen. Strayer fell back to third, Joel Rust was fourth and Adam Larson was fifth.

Next Friday Night will be an evening with the Shriners. Hot Laps at 6:45pm and Racing at 7:30pm.
