Van Genderen, Logue, Stanton and Zehm Take Track Championships and Features at Boone

On Friday Night, the plan was to go to the Marshalltown Bobcats at Ames Little Cyclones High School Football game before the decision was made about the races at Marshalltown, however Marshalltown's race remained as an option but at 20 minutes to five the races were cancelled.

Here is some notes about Marshalltown......Its the first time the speedway, three consecutive nights rained out since 2008, that season there was four consecutive nights rained out in April of that year.  Also a note on the rain out, its the third consecutive year the final Friday Night in August being rained out.

Track Champions at Marshalltown was Donavon Smith in IMCA Stock Cars (his fourth at Motown in the Stock Cars), Jared Van Deest in IMCA Northern SportMods (his second track championship), Mike Morrill in Mod Lites (fourth since 2007 at Motown), Eric Stanton in IMCA Hobby Stocks (second consecutive track championship), Jacob Murray in IMCA Modifieds (first track championship at Motown) and Darrel DeFrance in IMCA Late Models (first official track champion for the Late Models since 1990).

With the regular season winding down on Saturday Nights, some options was Boone, Knoxville, Independence or West Liberty for Season championship nights or Harlan for the Tiny Lund Memorial but my choice was made up to head to the Boone Speedway for Season Championship Night.

Drivers would have out of the car introductions on the front stretch giving the fans to see the stars that wheel these hot rods each every night.

First feature of the night was the 17 lap Mod Lites feature event. Bryan Zehm and Joe Glick started on the front row and it was Zehm wrestling the top spot away early. Zehm was comfortable out front and not even lap traffic fazed him, it slowed him up a bit allowing Corey Sauerman, Glick and Josh May to inch closer but none of them got close to him until lap 15. On lap 15, the green flag was replaced with a red flag when Glick came up the race track trying to say in front of Sauerman on the front stretch but after they got together, Glick went for several tumbles down the front stretch. Glick climbed from the car okay. Zehm saw Josh May and Sauerman on his back bumper on the restart so he knew this had to be a perfect restart and it was exactly that as Zehm went on to take his fifth win of the season at Boone. May finished second after starting 12th, Sauerman was third, Randy Bryan was fourth and Joel Keenan was fifth. Zehm also was the 2016 Track Champion.

Up next was the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap season championship feature and it was a pair of seven cars leading the field to the green in Eric Stanton and Dustin Graham. Graham grabb the early lead with Stanton running second but on lap eight, Stanton made the move and took the top spot away. Stanton and Graham ran one and two the rest of the way with Stanton claiming his second win and the 2016 track championship. Graham, Aaron Rudolph. Solomon Bennett and Dustin Lynch finished second through fifth respectively.

The IMCA Northern SportMods 20 lap feature event was next and one noteable driver not making the call after experiencing mechanical issues in hot laps was Jake McBirnie. Johnathon Logue and Randy Roberts started on the front row and it was Logue grabbing the top spot right away for Roberts. The caution came out just after lap three was completed for debris on the back stretch. Logue got a great restart, pulled away and did not let lap traffic bother him as he cruised on sixth win and 2016 track championship. Randy Roberts ran second the entire race, Chad Ryerson finished third ahead of Cory Pestotnik and Daniel Tasler.

Donavon Smith had clinched the 2016 track championship in the IMCA Stock Cars so got the right to start on the pole in the feature but it was Jay Schmidt starting on the outside grabbing the top spot. Schmidt held off Smith but on lap seven, it was not Smith, it was Tyler Pickett that got by Smith and began to battle for the lead. Pickett grabbed the lead way from Schmidt on lap eight. Schmidt tried to get back by Pickett but was unsuccessful as Pickett would go on to take his third win of the season. Schmidt finished second ahead of hard charging Kevin Opheim. Smith fell back to fourth and Josh Daniels was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the 25 lap IMCA Modified Season Championship feature and the front row consisted of 2016 track champion Mike Van Genderen and Russ Dickerson. Dickerson took the top spot early and just after lap three was scored the caution came out when Bob Daniels would go for a roll off the top side of turn three. Daniels climbed from his car but the car had major damage. Dickerson remained out front but Van Genderen stay close and by the time the lap traffic start getting heavy, that was the opening Van Genderen needed. Van Genderen took the top spot away on lap 18 and two laps later the caution came out on lap 20 for Cody Morgan in turn four. Van Genderen held off the challenges from Dickerson to take his seventh win at Boone this year. Chris Webb, Denny Pittman and Dustin Smith rounded out the top five.

Racing is not done at Boone because now all focus turns towards the "Prelude to the Super Nationals" and then "Super Nationals" begining next saturday. Hot Laps at 6pm for the Prelude with Racing to Follow, Super Nationals start times are listed at raceboone.com.

A Note of enterances for the Prelude and Super Nationals its self is : Only haulers will be allowed to enter off Highway 30 at the east entrance. A new, longer drive has been configured to eliminate the backup on the highway. Fans must enter on the west entrance.

Up next for me is the Benton County Speedway to work turns three and four tonight, then Season Championship Night at the Southern Iowa Speedway on Wednesday, MHS High School football game against Mason City / maybe races after the game and then beginning next saturday its Boone for Super Nationals.
