Van Genderen Wins Thriller Finish at Boone

As racing season is winding down the regular season part and after the races at Marshalltown got rained out ruining my birthday plans. Plan was made to go to the Iowa State Fair in the morning and afternoon then head to Iowa's Action Track, the Boone Speedway for a night of racing action. Mother nature at least treated me right by doing that as the racing at Boone had some exciting finishes as drivers get ready for Super Nationals.

First feature of the night was the 15 lap Mod Lites feature and it was "Huggie Bear" Joel Huggins wrestling the top spot away from Angelo Montgomery. Huggins looked comfortable out front until lap traffic at which allowed Josh May to chase him down. May would get by Huggins on lap 11 and go on to take the win. Bryan Zehm and Mike Morrill got by Huggins for second and third respectively putting Huggins back to fourth.  Montgomery came home with a fifth place finish.

In the 18 lap IMCA Northern SportMods feature event, it was the youngster Hunter Longnecker grabbing the top spot early but the caution came out on lap two when Jake McBirnie and Cory Pestotnik got together in turn two. On the restart, the caution came out again for Jon Peed, Rocky Caudle, Cory Rose and Lonnie Hodges in turn four. The question was would the sportmods get another lap in, the answer was no because as the field got ready to go back to the green flag,  Daniel Tasler got into Longnecker sending him around in turn four forcing another restart. Curtis Veber running third would now inherited the lead with Tara Longnecker and Adam Armstrong in second and third. Veber led until lap six when Armstrong got by and it was Armstrong cruising on to the win. Veber, Jonathan Logue, Chad Ryerson and Chad Shaw rounded out the top five.

Randy Havlik started on the pole of the 20 lap IMCA Modifieds feature and took advantage by taking the early lead. Josh Truman started fifth worked his way up to take the top spot away on lap five just before a pair of cautions. First caution was for Tony Hilgenberg and Brandon Leeman in turn two and then on the restart for Tyler Gross in turn four. Truman began to pull away until he encounter lap traffic which allowed Albert Wolfgram and Mike Van Genderen to reel him in. Truman looked to be holding them off only to see the caution come out on lap 18  forcing a restart. Truman and Wolfgram battled for the lead but all eyes was on Van Genderen as they entered turn three on the last lap, Van Genderen was running third but by the time he got to the finish line it was Van Genderen the winner as he saw the hole open inbetween Truman and Wolfgram, he took to edge out Truman by 0.04 secs at the finish line. Wolfgram was third, Havlik was fourth and Dennis Pittman was fifth.

Tyler Brauckman led the first lap of the IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature before the caution came out for Brad Dutton and Rod Richards on the front stretch. Brauckman had to contend with Brad Whitney for the lead, Whitney took the lead on lap three just before the caution came out again on lap three. Whitney was got a great restart but saw the caution come out again just after lap four was scored. Whitney saw Trent Murphy sneak by to take the lead on lap ten. Murphy would go on to take the win ahead of Josh Daniels, Todd Fisher, Whitney and Wayne Gifford.

Final feature of the night was the 12 lap IMCA Hobby Stocks feature event, Shawn Wirtz took the early lead until Dustin Lynch took the lead away on lap six. The caution came out on lap eight for Jack Phillips in turn two and Lynch now knew John Watson was right behind him on the restart. Lynch and Watson began to battle for the lead and it was Lynch that would go off the top of turn one on lap nine. That gave the lead over to Watson but Watson saw the caution come out one more time on lap ten for Gregg Anderson in turn two. Watson led the remaining laps and went on to take the win ahead of Seth Janssen, Solomon Bennett, Dustin Graham and Chad Legere in turn two.
