Sohl wins Clone Heavy's during Thunder Dome Race #1

Back for its 2nd season inside the Thunder Dome on the Central Iowa Fairgrounds, Full Throttle Promotions was very happy after race 1 as there was 63 entries sign in to do battle. The track was in great shape and drivers were pretty pleased and plan to return to the Thunder Dome meanwhile track crews immediately looked at the issues to take care before the next races.

First feature of the day was the North 3rd Ave Dairy Queen Jr. 2 Pro Heavy in which it was Jamison Hampton from Cedar Falls taking lead and not looking back but not only that Hampton would sweep the day as he would take the heats also on the day.  Jonathan Hughes was 2nd, McKenzie Smith was 3rd and Tyler Havens was 4th.

In the Hartwig Plumbing & Heating Kid Karts would see a familiar face in victory lane as it would be young Gage Stratton from Amana leading the race from start-to-finish. Connor Kreigel from Marshalltown, Kennedy Davenport, Carson Less and Dayton Filloon rounding out the field.

Chase Decals of Ames Jr. Quads would see Tristan Rethmeier from Newton sweep the day by winning both heat races and the feature over Dalton Hampton from Cedar Falls.

J&V Napa Auto Parts Rookie (also known as Putt Putts) would see Tama's Logan Schmidt lead the race from start to finish. Kyler Smith was 2nd, McKenzie Culbertson was 3rd, Keegan Havens was 4th and Keaton Woosley wsa 5th. Heat winners were Schmidt, Havens in round 1, Smith and Culbertson in round 2.

Because of car counts we had a Combined Class which consisted of the Full Throttle Promotions Unlimited All-Stars (UAS), BS Racing Stock Medium, Motorsports Photography UAS 4 Stroke and Comfort Inn of Marshalltown KT100. Thor Anderson from Bondurant won the feature event driving a Stock Medium, Casey Luke was 2nd in his UAS Support 4 Stroke, Jason Block was 3rd in his KT100 and Scott Badker would not start as he experience trouble in hot laps in his UAS kart. All of them will earn points in there respective divisions.

Line X of Ottumwa Jr. Bikes would see Brandon Webster from Ottumwa clean sweep the day by winning both heats and the feature. Clayton Moyer from Indianola was 2nd and Noah Marquez was 3rd.

Mad Dog Bikes sponsored by Line X of Ottumwa would Aaron Dowdell and David Arnold, both from Marshalltown split the heat races. In the feature it was Dowdell taking the win and Arnold taking 2nd.

Slingshot Graphics Jr. 1 Pro Heavy would see an exciting race as it was Mark Maas taking the early lead but that lead would be short lived as Nick Rose would take the lead on lap 4. Rose would lose the lead to Carter Young on lap 10. Young would go on to the win. Ashton Gein, Walker Ashton , Madison Clark and Kadence Davenport would round out the top 5. Heat winners were Maas and Clark in Round 1, Maas and Young in round 2.

Max Leathers Pro Singles were up next and it was Justin Klein taking the win with Jack Klein in 2nd, Jake Pfalgraf was 3rd and Clayton Webster was 4th.

A Day of Thunder on the Syrup Amateur Quads would see Eric Vanderploeg take the lead early and go on to take the win and DJ Robinson was 2nd. Blake Miller filling in for Matt Webb, who broke his wrist after rolling his 4 wheeler in the 2nd heat race of the day, was 3rd, Josh Beukeme was 4th and Jeremy Robinson was 5th. Jeremy Robinson and Vanderploeg taking the wins in the heats.

River City Muffler Clone Heavy would see 11 carts sign in to do battle and it was Brandon Sohl taking the early lead but "Showtime" Josh Banzhaf would take the lead on lap 3. Banzhaf would be passed again by Sohl on lap 4 and it was Sohl that would go on to the win despite being challenged by Banzhaf, Ryan Gustin and Ross Young. Banzhaf would finish 2nd, Albert Wolfgram was 3rd, Young was 4th and Chris Burke was 5th.

The final class of the day was the A Day of Thunder on the Syrup Pro Quads and it was Eric Vanderploeg taking lead and looked to be heading to the win but would experience some troubles late in the race that allowed Tyler Hammons from Fremont, Nebraska taking over the lead and the win . Tyler Ringle from Omaha was 2nd, Josh Beukeme was 3rd, Jeremy Johnson was 4th and Vanderploeg was 5th.

Next Race for the Thunder Dome Indoor Dirt Racing is Saturday November 19th. Gates Open at 9a, Hot Laps at Noon and Racing at 1p. For more information about upcoming races check out http://www.thunderdomeiowa.com/

Bonnett, Carter, VanderBeek and Wood winners at the 25th Annual Musco Lighting Fall Challenge

I made my annual fall trip to the "Mahaska County Monster" the Southern Iowa Speedway for the Silver Anniversary of the Musco Lighting Fall Challenge. This race would also be the last for Track Promotors Todd and Janet Staley.

On Friday Night there was interesting twist to the program as drivers that finished in the top 8 on friday night's features would have the option to take a guaranteed starting spot on saturday or take the money. Most of them would just keep their starting spot for saturday.

Saturday Night would bring another full night of racing with a draw-redraw format. I was well welcomed by Todd Staley when i arrived and want to thank him for letting me attend the event again.

USRA Hobby Stocks was up first for their 25 lap feature. It was the racing veteran Bill Bonnett taking the lead from the pole (a position he earned on friday). It appeared Bonnett would be walking away with the event but then Donavon Nunnikhoven and Clayton Crump would chase him down and make a move on Bonnett on lap 15 and 16. Bonnett didn't give up as he would get back by both of them and take the lead back on lap 24. Bonnett took the win and Nunnikhoven was 2nd. Crump would cross in 3rd but would be diaqualifed in post race tech inspection moving Adam Cline to 3rd, Steve Larson to 4th and Chris Hovden to 5th.

Musco Ligthing USRA Modifieds feature would see the "Z-Man" Zack VanderBeek take the lead from the outside front row. VanderBeek would not be slowed even when he started hitting the lap traffic. The race had 2 race cautions, first one  on lap 15, first one was the ambulance and then the 2nd one on lap 16 for Colt Mather getting into the turn 2 wall. VanderBeek would lead the final 9 laps to take the victory, Steve Blattler was 2nd, Ron Ver Beek was 3rd, Kurt Kile was 4th and Bob Timm would end up 5th.

Carter's Manufacturing USRA B-Mods feature would start off wild as Carter Vandenberg would hit a tractor tire down in the bottom of turn 2 and that would send him air borne and would flip 5-7 times before coming to a rest on his wheels. Vandenberg would climb from his car and be okay just a little shaken up, the car however would be destroyed.

When then race got going it was Vandenberg's Cousin Cayden Carter taking the race lead and it appeared nothing was going to slow him down but then another race caution came out on lap 10, this cousin was for Bobby Greene in turn 3. Carter wouldn't let that bother him as again he would start pulling away until the next race caution came out on lap 20 for Gene Claxton in turn 2. Carter and the field would see the caution again 2 laps later for a big tractor tire on the race track in turn 2. Carter would still manage to hold everybody off and take the win which was his 31st win of the year. Bryon Weyer would start 2nd and finish 2nd, Jason Mallicoat was 3rd, Jake Timm was 4th and Jared Timmerman was 5th.

The final feature of the night was the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars and it was Nathan Wood taking the lead from the outside front row but just after 1 lap was completed the caution would come out for Chad Walter and Dan Christopher would get together in turn 2, Walter would keep going but Christopher would bring out the yellow and be only one sent to the tail. Wood again would resume command but Shane Weller would stay close and behind them there would some great 3 to 4 wide racing battles behind them. The final race caution came out on lap 16 for Dan Christopher in turn 4. Wood would have to now battle with Weller and Jackson the last 9 laps but manage to hold off both of them and take the win. Weller, Jackson, Matt Greiner and Mike Van Genderen would round out the top 5.

Racing would come to an end at 12:17 am putting an end to the tenure of Todd and Janet Staley at the Southern Iowa Speedway as they would look to put their focus on getting the United States Racing Association (USRA) sanctioning body to more tracks around the country. The Southern Iowa Fairboard will be starting a search for a new promotor for the "Mahaska County Monster".

Meanwhile thanks to Todd and Janet Staley for the past several years at the "Mahaska County Monster" and also thanks goes out to Terry and Jenni Hoeing for the past 14 years at Lee County Speedway. I have had a chance to meet all of you and you are all very friendly to everybody.

Duffy takes Checkers, Elliott wins HDT Tour Title on Night #2 of the Havoc on the High Banks

Night number two would bring us a lot of great racing action as we would have 7 classes in competition. This night would not disappoint the fans that were in attendance at all. Fans also learned the Sport Compacts will be added to the speedway weekly in 2012.

The first feature of the night was the IMCA Sport Compacts and it was the Racing Veteran Merv Chandler leading the race from start to finish in the green-to-checkered event. Brad Chandler took 2nd with Tyler Whalen in 3rd, Bill Whalen in 4th and Dave Moorman in 5th.

O'Reilly Auto Parts Mod Lites feature would see Colby Oberembt take the early lead and nothing seem to be able to stop including 2 race cautions on lap 8 and 10. Oberembt would take the win with Josh May, James May, Joel Huggins and Dustin Forsberg rounding out the top 5.

Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks would go green-to-checkered and it was Bret Moyer leading all 12 laps and taking the win and claiming the Dirt Truck Championship. Carl Moyer took 2nd, Brad Moyer in 3rd, Tony Moro in 4th and Rick Clark in 5th.

Toby K's Hideaway IMCA Hobby Stocks would see a caution before a lap would be completed. When the race did get going it would go 15 laps caution free with Scott Pippert leading all the laps. Eric Knutson was 2nd, Tyler Pickett was 3rd, Kenny Loftus was 4th and Eugene Nicklas was 5th.

Next up would be the Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Sport Mods feature and it was Jake Strayer leading the first lap. Clint Luellen would get by Strayer and take the lead on lap 2, a lead in which Luellen  would hold until lap 10. Cayden Carter would use a lap car as a pick and get by Luellen for the lead, a lap later the caution would fly twice. Carter would hold off all challenges and take the win with Tyler Droste, Clint Luellen, Jenae Gustin and Carter Van Den Berg rounding out the top 5.

In the Mike's Hard Lemonade IMCA Stock Cars feature it was Dave Atcher taking the lead early but then the caution would fly on lap 2 and 3. Atcher would still remain out front but Jay Schmidt would make the bottom side work and make the pass for the lead on lap 6. Schmidt would hold the lead until the caution waved again on lap 13. On the restart, Jay Schmidt would have to deal with 19th place starter Brian Irvine, Irvine would make the pass and take the top spot. Irvine and the field would see the caution flag  fly again on lap 14, 15 and 17 but would manage to cruise on to the win. Schmidt would finish 2nd with 24th place starter Damon Murty in 3rd, Atcher in 4th and Andy Bryant in 5th.

The final feature of the night was the JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour IMCA Modifieds, a feature that would bring us 3 and 4 wide racing through the 30 laps. Mark Elliott would take the early lead only to see the caution come out after completion of lap 1 and 2. Elliott would have himself in a 5 car battle for the top spot on lap 6 but continue to lead it. Elliott would lead it depsite a caution on lap 13 but the caution on la 16 would change things. Elliott would be passed by Adam Larson on the restart, Larson's lead was short lived as Darin Duffy would get by on lap 21. Duffy would manage to take the win despite cautions on lap 23 and 24. Finishing behind Duffy was Jon Snyder, Todd Shute, Adam Larson and Richie Gustin. Mark Elliott would finish 6th but end up with the JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour Championship.

Next up for the Marshalltown Speedway will be the Annual Awards Banquet on November 4th and will take place at the Activities Building on the Central Iowa Fairgrounds in Marshalltown. The next racing event at the speedway will be in April.

Zehm, Smith, Carter, Irvine and Gustin Winners on Night #1 of the Havoc on the High Banks

After having 3 weeks off the Marshalltown Speedway roar to life with 158 race cars signed in to do battle on night number 1 of the 5th Annual Havoc on the High Banks. Of those 158 race cars there was 4 states represented and they were Iowa, Illinois, Missouri and Calfornia.

First feature of the night was the O'Reilly Auto Parts Mod Lites 15 lapper. Bryan Zehm would take the early lead but he would have some pressure and Josh May would make the pass on lap 4. May would experience mechanical troubles a lap later on lap 5  and then the first race caution came out on lap 6. Zehm would be the leader once again and end up going on to the win despite a caution with 3 laps to go. Tim Hennigar would finish 2nd, Colby Oberembt came home 3rd,  Joel Huggins was 4th and James May in 5th.

In the Toby K's Hideaway IMCA Hobby Stocks feature it was Scott Pippert leading the first lap but then the first race caution came out stacking the field up. On the restart, Devin Smith would make the pass on Pippert and take the lead. Smith would start encountering lap traffic and then the yellow flew again on laps 10 and 12. Smith would cruise on to the win with Kevin Fee in 2nd,  Pippert in 3rd, Brandon Brinton in 4th and Austin Luellen in 5th.

Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Sports Mods would have to use some heats and b mains to set the field. Cayden Carter would take the early race lead and not look back in the caution filled feature event. Austin Kaplan would finish 2nd, Doug Smith would start in 21st and end up in 3rd. Jenae Gustin started 14th and finish 4th and Tyler Droste would end up 5th.

Mike's Hard Lemonade IMCA Stock Cars feature would live up to the nickname of "Class To Tough To Tame" as there would be great door-to-door battle through out the 20 lapper. Before the event got started though the caution would come out forcing a complete restart. When the race got going there would be great racing up front between Brian Irvine and Damon Murty. Murty would take the lead early but would race side-by-side with Irvine every lap. Irvine would make a move and a pass of the lead on lap 11. Murty tried to come back but it fell short as Irvine would end up taking the win. Murty finished 2nd, Donavon Smith in 3rd, Jay Schmidt was 4th and Steve Meyer in 5th.

The final feature of the night was the JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour IMCA Modifieds for 30 laps. Pole Sitter Richie Gustin would take the lead and seem impossible to take it from him even though 4 race cautions including 1 with 3 laps to go when 2nd place Jon Snyder would see his engine expire. Gustin would take the win with Ronn Lauritzen, Vern Jackson, Darin Duffy and Jacob Murray rounding out the top 5.

Racing action resumes tomorrow night at the Marshalltown Speedway with Night #2 of the 5th Annual Havoc on the High Banks as we will add the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks and IMCA Sport Compacts to the card.
