Johnson, Simpson and Mather Among Winners in Indee

Friday Night instead of making the trip to the Brooklyn Raceway to assist with scoring duties and that was so much fun but it kept me from taking pictures or notes to write a blog recap from Night 1 of the 4th Annual Sharon Jaennette Memorial / Brooklyn Spring Nationals. Saturday Night it was off to the Independence Motor Speedway for weekly announcing duties.

It was a Chilly April night at the Independence Motor Speedway but that did not stop one hundred and sixteen cars from checking in to tame the 3/8 mile dirt track at the Buchanan County Fairgrounds for night two of track points. As typical happens in the early racing season the race track has its on character of element. Final checkered flag was displayed at 9:47 pm.

Extra Money was put on the line in the IMCA Modifieds as they were $1,000 to win. Steven Nabholz added $500 (split between Top 5) and Dan Smock Detailing added $100 to the winner making it $1,200 to win. Huntley and Sons Trucking add $100 hard charger for the Modifieds.

First feature of the night was the 16 lap Burco Sales IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature event. Kyle Olson grabbed the top spot early from getting by pole sitter Brett Thomas. Kyle Olson held off cousin Tony Olson until the only race caution came out on lap nine. The caution was for Steve Wimer spinning in turn four. Tony Olson got a great restart and got by Kyle Olson to take over the top spot. Tony Olson went on to take the feature win, Kyle Olson finished second. Nate Albrant was third, Brandon Tharp was fourth and Brady Hilmer was fifth.

Jason Hocken led lap one of the Dominator Chassis IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature event. Hocken's lead was short lived as Cole Mather took the top spot away on lap two. Mather fended off challenges from Tom Schmitt before able to pull away to take the feature win. Tom Schmitt finished second, Last week's winner Jay Schmidt finished third. Hocken fell back to fourth and Dustin Vis moved up five spots to finish fifth.

Chris Simpson took full advantage of starting on the pole in the Performance Bodies IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event by taking the early race lead. Simpson held off Jordan Hicks until the caution came out on lap three when Bret Ramsey spun in turn four after contact from Mike Burbridge. Simpson was determined to not be denied as the race was slowed again on lap seven when Patrick Flannagan spun in turn four. Another caution came out on lap nine when Kelly Shryock was spun by Ronn Lauritzen in turn four, Shryock was initial going to be penalized but Laurtizen stopped told officials to give Shryock his spot back and he would go to the tail for causing the caution.

The race was slowed two more times, lap 12 when Brady Kohrs went off the top of the race track and then on lap 17 when Hicks spun in turn two. Simpson held off the Spencer Diercks and Troy Cordes to take the $1,200 to win feature. Diercks, Cordes, Shryock and Brennen Chipp rounded out the top five. Shryock took home the $100 hard charger award from Huntley and Sons Trucking after moving up 15 spots.

Up next was the Waterloo Auto Parts Sport Compacts 12 lap feature event. Cristian Grady wrestled the early race lead from fellow front row starter Jacob Morris, Grady was followed by Lukas Rick. The first caution came out on lap two when Steve Knight and Jeremy Wheeler get together on the front stretch. Grady held off Rick and Morris on the restart and appeared to be heading on to the easy win until a caution came out again on lap eight when Rick lost a right rear wheel sending him off the top side of turn one and two. Grady held off Morris and last week's winner Zeke Wheeler to take the feature win. Zeke Wheeler, Logan Clausen, Morris and David Balik finished second through fifth.

Kolton Osborn led the first two laps of the Waterloo Auto Parts Indee Cars 12 lap feature before Reggie Rema took the top spot away on lap three. Rema was followed by team car Chad Dugan getting by Osborn on lap four. The caution came out on lap eight for Osborn spinning in turn one.  Rema held off Dugan and Yukon, Oklahoma's Korbin Hand on the restart but on lap ten, another caution when Osborn spun again. Dugan got by Rema on the restart and went on to take his second feature win this season in Indee. Rema finished second, Hand was third, Carson James finished fourth and Dave Rossburg was fifth.

Albert Auto IMCA Hobby Stocks 16 lap feature event was up next and it was Tyler Ball leading the opening lap. Kaden Reynolds, started ninth but by the time lap two was scored as the race leader. Reynolds pulled away and never looked back as the feature went caution free. Reynolds took the win making him two for two in Indee this season. Billy Rhoades finished second, Shawn Kuennen was third, Luke Schluetter was fourth and Justin Hanson was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the 25 lap Dunlap Motors IMCA Late Models feature event. Sean Johnson and Curt Martin led the field to the green flag. Johnson grabbed the race lead and was only slowed by a pair of cautions. First caution was on lap seven when Scott Welsh spun in turn four after clipping a implement tire. The second caution was for Justin Hanson spinning in turn four. Johnson went on take the win ahead of Martin, Eric Pollard, Logan Duffy and Ron Klein.

Seemann, Hobscheidt, Schmidt, VanWyk and Reynolds Among Winners in Indee

The 2021 Racing Season finally got underway at the Independence Motor Speedway located on the Buchanan County Fairgrounds on Saturday Night. The season was suppose to start with the Frostbuster on April 1st but was cancelled for being too cold and then last Saturday April 10th was cancelled because of rain and the cold.

Racing action was exciting and intense at times and even hairy when lap traffic got heavy in front the race leaders. It might have been chilly but fans saw some great action. The final checkered flag waived at 10:25pm.

First Feature of the night was the Burco Sales IMCA Sport Mods 16 laps feature event. Before a lap was scored the caution came out when Tony Olson spun in turn four stacking up the field. Dylan VanWyk got a great start on the restart but saw the caution come out again on lap 2 when Vern Jackson spun. VanWyk was not to be denied and went on to take the feature win. Logan Anderson finished second, Tony Olson worked his way back to finish third, Brandon Tharp was fourth and Troy Bauer was fifth.

Jacob Morris led the first lap of the Waterloo Auto Parts Sport Compacts feature but Zeke Wheeler grabbed the top spot away on lap two. Wheeler appeared to be heading on to the easy win until the caution came out when Morris caught fire under the hood. Zeke Wheeler got a great restart and went on to take his first career win. Jay Crabill finished second, Logan Clauson was third, Andrew Bieber was fourth and Drew Nickell was fifth.

Before a single lap was scored in the Waterloo Auto Parts Indee Cars feature, the caution came out when Logan Takes slowed in turn one. Chad Dugan grabbed the race lead and pulled away to take the feature win despite another caution midway through the race. Finishing behind Dugan was Carson James, Chase Brunscheen, Tyler Carey and Daniel Andersen.

Performance Bodies IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature saw the Jacob Hobscheidt grabbed the race lead and was pretty much unchallenged with only lap traffic slowing him down. Hobscheidt admitted in victory lane, he switched from last years car to this year's car before Friday Night at Marshalltown, and like it much better which proved to be the case on Saturday. Troy Cordes, Ronn Laurtizen, Timmy Current and Brennen Chipp round out the top five.

Shawn Ritter led early in the Dominator Chassis IMCA Stock Cars feature event before Jay Schmidt took over the top spot. The feature event saw three cautions with the last one on lap 13. Schmidt went on to take the win ahead of Dallon Murty, Ritter, Damon Murty and Jarod Weepie.

Dunlap Motors IMCA Late Models feature event went caution free and saw two different race leaders. Eric Pollard wrestled the early lead away from fellow front row starter Curt Martin. Ben Seemann got by Martin and then by Pollard and never looked back going on to take his first win this season. Sean Johnson, Martin, Pollard and Darren Ackerman was second through fifth respectively.

Final feature of the night was the Albert Auto IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event. Tyler Ollendieck led the first lap before Brett Vanous took over the top spot. Kaden Reynolds worked his way from eighth and took the top spot away from Vanous. The race was slowed two times including the last time when Vanous flipped in turn three. Reynolds was determined to not be denied as he took the feature win, Jackson Vsetecka was second. Justin Hanson was third, Tyler Ollendieck was fourth and Billy Rhoades was fifth.

Braaksma, Smith, Logue and Knutson Take Boone Speedway Frostbuster Wins

Saturday Night I made the trip to the Boone Speedway for the annual Frostbuster Race and it was warmer than Stuart's on Tuesday Night and Marshalltown Friday Night. It was a very beautiful night for racing what was suppose to be the final night of the Frostbuster before Vinton moved from Wednesday now was night three.

One Hundred and Seventy Eight cars signed in to compete in the IMCA Frostbuster at Iowa's Action Track including 50 IMCA Stock Cars, 50 IMCA Sport Mods, 46 IMCA Modifieds and 32 IMCA Hobby Stocks. Racing began at 5pm and after 36 races later the final checkered flag flew at 9:35pm.

No repeat Frostbuster winners on Night 3 of the swing as Ethan Braaksma won in the IMCA Modifieds, Devin Smith won in the IMCA Stock Cars, Johnathon Logue took the Sport Mods and Eric Knutson took the Hobby Stocks.

First feature of the night was the 25 lap feature event for the Elmquist Towing IMCA Sport Mods. Dustin Lynch wrestled the early lead from fellow front row starter Cam Reimers. Lynch held off Reimers and before Johnathon Logue entered the mix. Logue was able to get by Lynch on lap nine for the race lead but Lynch stayed in tow. The only caution was a red flag on lap 14 when Dan Melton rolled several times in turn two. Logue held off Lynch and Reimers on the restart and went on to lead the final 11 laps to take the feature win. Reimers, Lynch, Cole Fenske and Austin Schrage rounded out the top five. Hard Charger of the race was Kenny Wyman Jr, finished tenth but moved up 11 spots.

Jeremy Richey led the first lap of the D&E Outdoor Services IMCA Modifieds 25 lap feature before a caution came out when Nick Meyer spun in turn four. Ethan Braaksma took the race lead away from Richey on lap two and Todd Shute followed suit into second on lap four. Braaksma was only slowed down one more time when the caution came out on lap 17 for Jon Snyder spinning in turn two and debris sitting in turn two. Braaksma held off Shute and Kyle Brown to take the feature win. Shute finished second, Kyle Brown was third, Tim Ward was fourth and Kelly Shryock was fifth. Shryock was the hard charger moving up eight spots.

In the Arnold Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars 25 lap feature event, it was Kyle Brown flexing his muscle getting by Tyler Pickett and Anthony Hofbauer on the start to lead. Brown cruising away before the only race caution came out on lap ten for Alex Crapser spinning in turn three. Brown rode the top side of the speedway while Jeff Mueller was on the bottom side, Brown held off Mueller and then held off the Smith Brothers (Donavon and Devin). Brown crossed the line in first however was disqualified in post race tech inspection for a carburetor issue. Brown stated that the Holley carburetor had a booster issue. Devin Smith was granted the win with Mueller in second. Donavon Smith, Damon Murty and David Smith was third through fifth respectively. Murty was the hard charger after moving up 17 spots from the 21st starting spot.

Final feature of the night was the Pickett Salvage IMCA Hobby Stocks 25 lap feature event with Luke Ramsey taking the early lead. Brett Vanous was trying to take the spot away from Ramsey but Ramsey held tough. Eric Knutson got by Vanous on lap 12 and then began his attempt to get by Ramsey but Ramsey held off until the final lap. Knutson made the move and would be Ramsey to the finish line to take the IMCA Frostbuster in Boone. Ramsey finished second ahead of Vanous, Solomon Bennett and Wayne Gifford. Aaron Martin was the hard charger moving up eight spots to finish sixth.
