Rain, Rainbow and Racing Filled the Night in Boone

After Independence Motor Speedway cancelled I began to figured out who was still racing and where to go for racing on Saturday. This would be my last race before I head out on a family vacation this week. Boone Speedway confirmed to me they were still ago so I began to make the almost one hour trip over for my first night since the Hawkeye 100 Night one as the weather looked questionable to make the trip to the Warren County Speedway in Indianola for some racing at the time to make a decision.

As I arrived a light rain shower tried to make a presents but it did not stop Iowa's Action Track from going racing. Hot Laps began and once again another light rain shower. After reworking the track, it was back to business but one more time a light rain shower. Finally after getting the track worked back in it was time for racing, only 16 minutes later than normal. The sunshine even made appearance as did a beautiful rainbow that went over the Speedway.

One hundred eighteen cars signed in to compete in the Saturday Racing Series divisions of IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks and IMCA Mod Lites. Four Sprint Cars was also in the pits to partake in the Hawkeye Challenge, the other divisions also would qualify four cars in the Hawkeye Challenge. Last Checkered waived by Flagman Logan Kelly at 10:55pm.

The Hawkeye Challenge is one unique race as it pits drivers in the five IMCA weekly classes plus four sprint cars with each division having a certain amount of laps based on lap speed. Sprint Cars had to run 25 laps, Modifieds 23 laps, Sport Mods and Mod Lites 22 laps, Stock Cars 21 laps and Hobby Stocks 20 laps. $1,000 to the overall winner and $500 to each class winner. Mike Johnston took the win in the Sprint Car class and crowned the overall winner. Mike Van Genderen took the win in the Modifieds, Mike Goldsberry in the Stock Cars, Johnathon Logue in the Sport Mods, Mike Smith in the Hobby Stocks and Josh May took the Mod Lites.

After a quick farming session, the first Weekly racing series feature was the IMCA STARS Mod Lites 15 lap feature presented by MyRacePass. Bryan Zehm took the lead early and never looked back, Zehm went on to take the easy win, his 2nd of season in Boone. There was a great battle behind him between Josh May, Randy Bryan and Mike Kennedy for place. Finishing behind Zehm was May in second, Kennedy in third after Bryan suddenly exited to the infield. Jon Braathun took fourth and Cody Yaw was fifth.

Tom Lathrop took the early race lead of the 18 lap IMCA Northern SportMod feature presented by Elmquist Towing. Lathrop looked strong and continued to lead through three cautions. First caution was on lap two when Kevin Yearington spun on the front stretch forcing Ryan Leeman and David Hoover to make contact. The second caution was on lap seven when Jessiah Taylor spun in turn two, the last caution came out on lap nine when Zach Hovell and Leeman spun in turn two. Lathrop continued to lead by fending off Ryan King and Camdan Vincent on the restarts. Lathrop led until Johnathon Logue worked his way from twelve to second. Logue made the move coming out of turn two on lap 14. Logue held on the last four laps to take his fourth win in a row and seventh of the season in Boone. Nineth place starter Izac Mallicoat took second, Lathrop drifted back to third, Chris Burke took fourth and Camdan Vincent was fifth.

In the D&E Outdoor Services IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event, it was Ronnie Hults taking the early lead but just after lap one scored in the books the caution came out when Nick Roberts stopped top side of turn four. Hults continued to lead with the field going 3 and 4 wide behind him for placing. The caution came out on lap seven when Nick Roberts, Rod Clement and Andy Tiernan got together in turn two. On the restart, Hults had to contend with Paul Nagle and Mike Van Genderen. Van Genderen took the race lead on lap eight and despite heavy pressure from Nagle, Van Genderen went on to take his first win of the season in Boone. Cory Sauerman, Nagle, Jeremy Mills and Anthony Hofbauer rounded out the top five.

Polesitter Mike House grabbed the early race lead from fellow front starter Rowdee Van Genderen in the "Class Too Tough To Tame" IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature event presented by Arnold Motor Supply. The first race caution came out on lap four when Devin Smith and Van Genderen got together in turns three and four. House continued to lead until fourteenth place starter David Smith worked his way through the field. David Smith took the top spot away on lap 11. A lap later on lap 12, the caution came out when House spin in turn two, then on restart when Van Genderen and House got together. David Smith held off brother Donavon Smith on the restart but another caution came out on lap 13 when Jesse Smith got spun around in turn two by Anthony Goldsberry. Only one more caution came out on lap 16 when Mark Hidlebaugh spun in turn two. David Smith hung on to take his second feature win of the season. Tenth place starter Donavon Smith finished second. Mathew West was third, Tyler Pickett was fourth and thirteenth place starter Jay Schmidt finished fifth.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event presented by Pickett Salvage, it went caution free. Shaun Wirtz led the first lap before Mike Smith took over the top spot on lap two. Smith went to the topside and went on to take the feature win joining his dad David, who won the Stock Cars in victory lane. Holtz was second, Jarod Weepie moved up seven spots to finish third. Jay Schmidt was fourth and Tom Schmitt was fifth.

In the Waterloo Auto Parts Sport Compacts 12 lap feature event, Blake Driscol grabbed the top spot early fending off several challenges from Mitch Balik. Chipp fend off Lauritzen and Mark Schulte on the restart but the caution came out again on lap 13 when Kevin Hurst and Ryan Maitland spun in turn four. Chipp this time challenged by Lauritzen and twelfth place starter Troy Cordes. Cordes took over the race lead just before the caution came out on lap 16 when Maitland went off the top of turn four and Chris Snyder spun in turn four. Cordes held off Chipp to become the 8th different Modified feature winner this season in Indee. The win was his 48th IMCA Modifieds win in Indee putting him first all time in wins. Chipp finished a close second, Lauritzen was third, Schulte was fourth and Mike Burbridge was fifth.

Tyler Ball and Dreu Keuker battled for the lead early in the Albert Auto IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event with Tyler Ball leading the opening lap. The caution came just after lap one scored in the books when Chad Mannion spun in turn four. The caution came out again on the restart when Mannion got into the front stretch wall. Tyler Ball, Keuker and Kaden Reynolds went three wide on the lap three allowing Reynolds to take over the race lad. Reynolds pulled away only to see a caution come out on lap 12. Reynolds held on to take his fourth win of the season in Indee and his second of the weekend, picked up the win in Marshalltown on Friday. Jim Ball Jr finished second, Russ Olson finished third, Kueker was fourth and Tyker Ollendieck moved up from tenth to finish fifth.

Final feature of the night was the 25 lap Dunlap Motors IMCA Late Models feature. Todd Johnson from Mitchellville led the opening lap before the caution came out when Scott Welsh blew up on the front stretch before coming to a stop on in turn one. Johnson led but the caution came out again on lap two when Troy Cordes, driving Ben Seeman's ride, and Steve Hunter spun in turn four. Sean Johnson took over the race lead and pulled away. Johnson power plant was not sounding very good which allowed Logan Duffy to chase him back down late. Duffy got by Johnson on the last lap to take his second win of the season at his home track. Johnson held on to finish second before pulling to the infield. Greg Kastli spun to avoid hitting Johnson and back across the start finish line in third. Vanous Ends the Night with a Thrilling Photo Finish in Indee

Another hot night of racing to place on Saturday Night at the Independence Motor Speedway during Burco Farms & Sales Night at the races. Ninety-six cars signed in for the seventh night of IMCA Speedway Motors weekly racing action.

Exciting Racing occurred all night with the last feature of the night leaving everybody on the feet. Vern Jackson, Tom Schmitt, Ashley Reuman, Matt Dugan, Brennen Chipp, Sean Johnson and Brett Vanous all took feature wins.

First feature of the night was the Burco Sales IMCA Sport Mods 16 lap feature event. Vern Jackson wrestled the early race lead and pulled away until a caution came out on lap 13 when Ethan Krall spun in turn two. Jackson held on to take his feature win of the season in Indee ahead of Brandon Tharp, Kyle Olson,s Brady Hilmer and Brett Thomas.

Scooter Dulin grabbed the early race in the Dominator Chassis IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature meanwhile while there was a good battle for second on back behind him, however just after lap two completed the caution came out. The caution came out again twice on lap four. Dulin held off Jason Hocken and Cole Mather on the restart and continued to lead until Tom Schmitt worked his way from eighth to the race lead on lap nine. Schmitt went on to take his second win of the season in Indee. Hocken finished second, Dulin fell back to third, Jay Schmidt after getting caught up in an early caution came back for finish four and last week's winner Jarod Weepie was fifth.

Before a lap scored in the Waterloo Auto Parts Sport Compacts 12 lap feature event, the red flag came out when Joseph Hempstead rolled off turn two after contact from Zeke Wheeler. Hempstead climbed from his car but his night came to an end. When the race final got going it was Korey Lana leading the first two laps before Ashley Reuman took over the top spot on lap three. Reuman had Cristian Grady follow her into second, Grady tried to get by Reuman but he also had to fend of Adam Gates and Jay Crabill. Reuman went on to take the feature win, Grady finish second, Gates was third, Crabill was fourth and Justin Hempstead was fifth.

Waterloo Auto Parts Indee Cars 12 lap feature event was up next on to the Speedway and Matt Dugan grabbed the race lead from his outside front row starting spot and the only thing slowing him down was the cautions on lap six and seven. Dugan went on to take his first feature win in Indee this year ahead of Bryce Carey, Skyler Dugan, Chase Brunscheen and Carson James.

The Performance Bodies IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature was caution filled with a total of eight cautions but Brennen Chipp determined to not be denied as he went on to take the feature win to become the seventh different winner in the Modifieds this season in Indee. Chipp admitted in victory lane, that he knew either Troy Cordes or Dylan Thornton poke their noses under caution and on the late race restarts. Cordes finished second with Thornton in third. Mike Burbridge and Chris Snyder finished fourth and fifth.

Ron Klein wrestled the lead early away from fellow front starter Steve Hunter in the 25 lap Dunlap Motors IMCA Late Models feature. Trailing Klein was Scott Welsh the first two laps and then by Sean Johnson. Klein appeared heading on to the win until lap traffic slowed him down just enough to allow Sean Johnson to reel him. Johnson made the move and took the top spot with two laps to go. Johnson went on to take his third win of the season at his home track. Klein, Logan Duffy, Russ Hesse and Chase Jermeland round out the top five.

Final feature of the night was the Albert Auto IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature. Tyler Ollendieck grabbed the race lead from the outside front row starting spot fending off Dreu Kueker. Tyler Ollendieck heading to victory until Brett Vanous, who got by Kueker for second starting to put some pressure on Tyler Ollendieck. Vanous got a run on the last lap entering turn one and exit turn two side-by-side with Tyler Ollendieck. Vanous and Tyler Ollendieck came across the line in a photo finish with Vanous winning by bumper. That makes two in a row for Vanous. Kaden Reynolds, Dreu Kueker and Gary Ollendieck rounded out the top five.

One Hundred and nineteen cars signed into tame the high banked quarter mile Marshalltown Speedway on Friday Night including 15 IMCA Sport Compacts making their first appearance of the season officially since their last appearance got rained out.

First feature of the night was the 12 lap IMCA Sport Compacts feature event. Lewie Winkleman led first three laps before John Gill took the race lead on lap four. Gill's lead was short lived as Dalton Sowers took the top spot away on lap five. Sowers led until the caution came out on lap nine for debris on the back stretch. Kolby Sabin got a great restart and took the lead away from Sowers on the restart to go on and take the feature win. Sowers came across the line in second but was disqualified in post race tech for illegal manifold, that moved up Gill to the runner-up spot. Mark Smith finished third, Max Heimbuch was fourth and Chad Larson was fifth.

Kaden Cochrun grabbed the race lead early in the IMCA Stars Mod Lites 15 lap feature event fending off challenges from Joe Glick. The first caution came out on lap three when Cory Sonner and Austin Gray spun in turn three. Cochrun got a great restart as did Doug Byers as he passed Glick for second. The caution came out again on lap seven when Blake Brown spun in turn two and one more time on lap eight when Thomas Messamer spun in turn one. Cochrun was not to be denied as held on to take the feature win ahead of Byers, Glick, Sonner and Bryan Zehm.

In the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature, Ben Newhouse led the opening lap before Eric Knutson made the right move to take over the top spot on lap two. However just after a third circuit was completed, the caution came out four times before another lap could be completed. First caution was Dan Brady spinning on the back stretch, second caution was for Newhouse spinning in turn two. Third caution on lap three was for Andy Peck, Mitchell Thomas, Braden Richards, Dalton Weepie and Jamie Coady in turn two. The final caution was for Jeremiah Andrews spinning in turn two. Knutson managed to not let those cautions effect him as he managed to lead the remaining 12 laps to take the feature win. Kaden Reynolds worked his way back after an early race flat tire to finish second. Carter Koop, Solomon Bennett and Luke Schluetter rounded out the top five.

Brayton Carter wrestled the lead away from fellow front starter Brady Hilmer on lap one of the 18 lap IMCA Sport Mod feature. The caution came out shortly after when Kaylin Lopez and Garrett Nelson spun in turn one and then again on the restart when Curt Hilmer spun in turn one. Carter held off Izac Mallicoat on the restart but just after a second lap was scored the caution came out again when Dale Kite spun in turn one. Carter got a great restart and pulled away until catching lap traffic allowing Mallicoat to get close. Carter sliced his way through the lap traffic to take the win. Mallicoat came home second, Johnathon Logue finished third, Austin Schrage was fourth and Jenae Gustin was fifth.

Up next was the Class Too Tough Too Tame, the IMCA Stock Cars for their 20 lap feature event. Austin Kaplan led the first five laps despite challenges from Jason Hall. Hall finally took the top spot on lap six but a lap later the first caution was displayed when Jeff Byers spun in turn two. Hall had Dallon Murty and Todd Reitzler on his back bumper on the restart. After Reitzler cleared Dallon Murty out of the way he was able to make the move on Hall to take the race lead. The caution came out shortly after for Dallon Murty, who went off the top side of turn three. Reitzler led until the next caution on lap 12 when Scott Rice and Leah Wroten got together in turn four. Damon Murty took the race lead away on the restart and began to pulled away only to see the caution come out on lap 18 for Mitchell Evens spinning in turn two. Murty held off Reitzler on the restart and took then win. The caution came out just as the leaders was coming to the checkered forcing a yellow-checkered when Kaplan and Jeff Wollam spun in turn two. Damon Murty took the win Reitzler was second, Dallon Murty came back to finish third, Steve Meyer was fourth and Dave Atcher was fifth.
