Gustin Lives Up to the "G-Money" By Taking the Win at the World Nationals

Saturday Night brought the season to a close at the Marshalltown Speedway with the Finale Night of the World Nationals. This year's rescheduled World Nationals had fantastic weather,  remember this race was scheduled for late March but moved because of weather. Fans were not disappointed as they were treating with exciting racing action for the second night in a row.

159 cars signed in for Night 2 of the World Nationals including 59 (of 64) Modifieds, 37 Stock Cars, 34 Sport Mods and 29 Hobby Stocks. Richie Gustin was the top point getter in the Modifieds heats on Friday and cashed in by taking the win in the Modifieds. Damon Murty won the Stock Cars, Jared Van Deest won the Sport Mods and Dylan Nelson won the Hobby Stocks.

Modifieds had last Chance Heats with the top two from each transfering to the A-Main, positions third through fifth raced in the Final Four Race. Brian Mullen won the 15 lap Final Four Race to advance to the Main Event as did Ronn Lauritzen, Johnny Whitman and NASCAR Veteran Kenny Wallace.

First feature of the night was the IMCA Northern Sport Mods 20 lap main event with Jared Van Deest and Garrett Nelson leading the field to the green. Van Deest looked a lot like his dad "Old Mr. Steady" Duane because he put that Mopar powered car out the race lead and pulled away. Van Deest never looked back with the only thing slowing him down was lap traffic. Van Deest went on to take the win in the feature that went caution free. Ethan Braaksma finished second, Jake McBirnie was third, Johnathon Logue was fourth and Jason Ebert from Clintonville, Wisconsin finished fifth.

"Mean Gene" Eugene Nicklas led the first lap of the IMCA Hobby Stocks 20 lap feature before Andrew Burg took the lead away on lap two. The caution came out shortly after when Bryce Sommerfeld spun on the back stretch after contact from "Mad Max" Max Leonard. Burg and Nicklas battled for the race lead with Nicklas taking the top spot again on lap four but Dylan Nelson made the move on them both on lap five and took the lead away. Nelson looked to be taking the easy win until the caution came out again on lap 17 for Nicklas spinning in turn two. Nelson was determined not to be denied the win as he lead the remaining laps to take the victory ahead of Eric Knutson, Chanse Hollatz, Burg and Aaron Rudolph.

Travis Van Straten from Hortonville, Wisconsin grabbed the early lead in the IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature event. The caution came out on lap four for debris. The restart also saw the caution come out when Todd Reitzler, Kodiak Wirtz and Mitchell Stankowski got together in turns one and two. On the second restart on lap four, Van Straten refused to come off the bottom side of the speedway mean while the cars behind him Damon Murty and Shawn Havel was working the top side. Murty grabbed the lead away from Van Straten on lap six and never looked back. Murty took the win with his other car driven again by Kyle Brown finishing second. Kyle Pfeifer from Hill City, Kansas was third, Jeff Mueller was fourth and Van Straten fell all the way back to fifth.

Final race of the night was the 50 Lap IMCA Modifieds World Nationals Main Event. Richie Gustin and Torrance, California's Cody Laney was the top two in heat race points from Friday so they led the field to the green. Gustin grabbed the race lead right away but Jordan Grabouski followed suit. The first caution came out on lap six for Jacob Murray and Brian Mullen in turn four. Gustin waited patiently to pick the gas back up on the restart and it was effective as he pulled away and looked to be heading on the easy win until lap traffic. Gustin dodged the lap traffic but that allowed Grabouski to get back within a few cars before the caution came out on lap 48 for Kyle Strickler and Joel Rust in turn four, setting up a two lap dash to the finish. Gustin again was perfect on the restart and would go on to take the $10,000 and Title belt win. Nebraska's Jordan Grabouski finished second, "Gasman" Cayden Carter was third, "T-Dub" Tim Ward was fourth and Wisconsin's Benji LaCrosse was fourth.

Blaine Webster grabbed the early lead in the IMCA Northern Sport Mods 20 lap feature holding off Duane Peterson, Ethan Braaksma and Jared Van Deest but the red flag came out on lap eight. The reason was for Colton Nelson, who took a tumble off the top side of turns three and four, Nelson claimed from the car okay but it ended his night. On the restart, Webster saw Austin Luellen take the top spot away and began to pull away. Luellen looked to be heading on to the easy win until the caution came out on lap 17 for debris in turn one. Luellen held off late race challenges from Van Deest and Curtis VanDerWal to take the win. Van Deest beat VanDerWal to the line for second, Lance Borgman (Beatrice, NE) finished fourth and Braaksma fell back to fifth.

Dylan Nelson took advantage off his pole postion by grabbing the lead in the IMCA Hobby Stocks 20 lap feature event. Nelson and the field saw the caution come out on lap six for Bryce Sommerfeld and Jack Phillips spinning on the exit of turn four. Nelson was not to be fazed even though he had Eugene Nicklas and Chanse Hollatz on his back bumper. Nelson held off the challenges until the caution come out on lap 16 for Chad Krug in turn two. Nelson and Hollatz battled for the race lead on the restart with Hollatz taking the lead away on lap 18. Hollatz, who had somebody else bring the car to the track since he was still in class at the University of Iowa, went on to take the win. Nelson, Nicklas, Kyle Parizek and Leah Wroten round out the top five.

Kyle Frederick and Dave Atcher led the field to the green in the IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature. Atcher grabbed the early race lead until the caution came on lap three for Frederick in turn two. On the restart, Atcher had to contend with Jeff Mueller and Todd Reitzler. The caution came out again on the restart when Tom Cannon, Mitchell Stankowski, Kellie Drury and Jesse Ely getting together in turn one. Mueller got a great restart and pulled away to take the win. Kyle Brown finished second with car owner Damon Murty finishing in third. Reitzler and Atcher round out the top five.

Super Nationals Week Recap by Foxman

The original plan for Super Nationals was to camp over there all week and attend all the nights including the prelude and practice night. However this year, things changed not allowing that to happen so the plan was then to still go all the nights except the practice but on the day of the prelude, I was not feeling well enough to make a drive over and drive back so stayed home. Sunday was the practice night and Super Nationals Party with Iowa's very own Country Singer Cody Hicks performing once again, mother nature at least let that happen but shortly after the rains came in and made the grounds so wet that meant Monday was going to start late meaning it was not going wise to make a drive over even though the Late Models moved from Monday again.

So Tuesday came around and again rain was in the forecast decided I was not going to sit around and wait to see what was going to happen so I headed to the Boone Speedway for the Tuesday Show which was Day 2 of Qualifying for Sport Mods and Hobby Stocks plus the full show for Sport Compacts. Unfortunately mother nature would not allow them to complete Tuesday Show including the Sport Compacts not able to get races of their show in yet forcing them cancel. The remaining Sport Mods and Hobby Stocks races was then rescheduled for Wednesday.

Wednesday's show changed, Sport Mods and Hobby Stocks would complete their round of qualifying with the final 6 starters for Saturday's Dance being filled in by top 6 in points from the week. The Stock Cars would have their complete qualifying night 1 with the Modifieds Wednesday's show being moved to Thursday Morning at 8 am.

Thursday's Racing action went 16 hours and 45 minutes, started at 8 am with the Wednesday's Modifieds Show followed by Thursday's Stock Cars and Modifieds complete show. Thursday was also the day the Late Models rescheduled to however because all the dry spots in the pits were already filled and no more room for any haulers because of the muddy pits the Late Models got scrapped from this years Super Nationals. The Race of Champions Races for Modifieds and Stock Cars was then added to the card.

Friday was a normal date as qualifying Day 3 for Modifieds and Stock Cars plus the Fast Shaft All-Star Invitational was on the schedule. Saturday had the last chance races for Stock Cars and Modifieds plus Big Dances and Race of Champions for Mods, Stocks, Hobby Stocks and Sport Mods.

Before I get to recapping each night even more.....I want to commend the great staff at Boone from all the track officials, flagmans and scorers for getting the show running off in a timely manner. Great Job by the "Dirt Doctor" Rod Robbins and the Track Prep team making the race track a great racing surface all week despite getting thrown curveballs early in the week. Belinda "Elliott" Davis and the Parking Staff did a great job getting everybody parked even though the pits were a muddy mess all week. The nothing to put your head down, you all did a great job so keep up the great work.

Saturday Prelude (September 1st, 2018)

51 Hobby Stocks, 71 Sport Mods, 95 Modifieds and 68 Stock Cars making the total entries for the Wild Rose Casino Prelude to the Super Nationals. Jake McBirnie started the week off right with a win in the IMCA Northern Sport Mods after starting seventh. Andrew Borchardt took his first career IMCA Stock Car feature win during the Prelude. Richie Gustin Jr.  started on the pole and went on to win the Modified feature that was made up on Sunday after Mother Nature rained out the feature. Eric Stanton took the IMCA Hobby Stocks Feature from his third place starting spot that was also made up on Sunday.

Monday (September 3rd, 2018)

Deery Brothers Summer Series Late Models was originally scheduled to race on Monday but mother nautre did not cooperate late Sunday Night and left the grounds extremely wet and hard to get anybody in the pits so they were rescheduled to Thursday in hopes for better conditions so that meant it was just going to be IMCA Northern Sport Mods and IMCA Hobby Stocks racing.

In the Qaulifying A Main for the Sport Mods, Chase Rudolf started outside front row and grabbed the lead and never looked back leading all 25 laps with the only thing slowing him down was lap traffic in the second half of the feature, the win gives him the pole for Saturday's Big Dance. Jake McBirnie came across the line in second but disqualifed in post race tech inspection for illegal steering box, that moved up Chad Ryerson to third. Zech Norgaard was disqualifed for compression that moved Johnathon Logue to third, Brayton Carter to fourth, Joe Docekal to fifth, Jarred Hackler to sixth. Rodger Peck was disqualifed for Compression and Robert Draper for Rear End Violation so that moved Gunnar Pike and Ty Rogers to seventh and eighth final qualifers.

I drove my self early in the week but Thursday, Friday and Saturday rode over with a good friend "Drunk Girl" aka Melissa from Team 3W and her boyfriend Scott......had fun conversations with Bigg Johnson Race Cars Gang on Saturday Night after the races.

Next up for me will the World Nationals at Marshalltown Speedway this week, not sure if I will write a blog but one thing you will expect my clipboard, headset and radios will be and mostly likely my camera to take some pictures.
