Gustin Lives Up to the "G-Money" By Taking the Win at the World Nationals

Saturday Night brought the season to a close at the Marshalltown Speedway with the Finale Night of the World Nationals. This year's rescheduled World Nationals had fantastic weather,  remember this race was scheduled for late March but moved because of weather. Fans were not disappointed as they were treating with exciting racing action for the second night in a row.

159 cars signed in for Night 2 of the World Nationals including 59 (of 64) Modifieds, 37 Stock Cars, 34 Sport Mods and 29 Hobby Stocks. Richie Gustin was the top point getter in the Modifieds heats on Friday and cashed in by taking the win in the Modifieds. Damon Murty won the Stock Cars, Jared Van Deest won the Sport Mods and Dylan Nelson won the Hobby Stocks.

Modifieds had last Chance Heats with the top two from each transfering to the A-Main, positions third through fifth raced in the Final Four Race. Brian Mullen won the 15 lap Final Four Race to advance to the Main Event as did Ronn Lauritzen, Johnny Whitman and NASCAR Veteran Kenny Wallace.

First feature of the night was the IMCA Northern Sport Mods 20 lap main event with Jared Van Deest and Garrett Nelson leading the field to the green. Van Deest looked a lot like his dad "Old Mr. Steady" Duane because he put that Mopar powered car out the race lead and pulled away. Van Deest never looked back with the only thing slowing him down was lap traffic. Van Deest went on to take the win in the feature that went caution free. Ethan Braaksma finished second, Jake McBirnie was third, Johnathon Logue was fourth and Jason Ebert from Clintonville, Wisconsin finished fifth.

"Mean Gene" Eugene Nicklas led the first lap of the IMCA Hobby Stocks 20 lap feature before Andrew Burg took the lead away on lap two. The caution came out shortly after when Bryce Sommerfeld spun on the back stretch after contact from "Mad Max" Max Leonard. Burg and Nicklas battled for the race lead with Nicklas taking the top spot again on lap four but Dylan Nelson made the move on them both on lap five and took the lead away. Nelson looked to be taking the easy win until the caution came out again on lap 17 for Nicklas spinning in turn two. Nelson was determined not to be denied the win as he lead the remaining laps to take the victory ahead of Eric Knutson, Chanse Hollatz, Burg and Aaron Rudolph.

Travis Van Straten from Hortonville, Wisconsin grabbed the early lead in the IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature event. The caution came out on lap four for debris. The restart also saw the caution come out when Todd Reitzler, Kodiak Wirtz and Mitchell Stankowski got together in turns one and two. On the second restart on lap four, Van Straten refused to come off the bottom side of the speedway mean while the cars behind him Damon Murty and Shawn Havel was working the top side. Murty grabbed the lead away from Van Straten on lap six and never looked back. Murty took the win with his other car driven again by Kyle Brown finishing second. Kyle Pfeifer from Hill City, Kansas was third, Jeff Mueller was fourth and Van Straten fell all the way back to fifth.

Final race of the night was the 50 Lap IMCA Modifieds World Nationals Main Event. Richie Gustin and Torrance, California's Cody Laney was the top two in heat race points from Friday so they led the field to the green. Gustin grabbed the race lead right away but Jordan Grabouski followed suit. The first caution came out on lap six for Jacob Murray and Brian Mullen in turn four. Gustin waited patiently to pick the gas back up on the restart and it was effective as he pulled away and looked to be heading on the easy win until lap traffic. Gustin dodged the lap traffic but that allowed Grabouski to get back within a few cars before the caution came out on lap 48 for Kyle Strickler and Joel Rust in turn four, setting up a two lap dash to the finish. Gustin again was perfect on the restart and would go on to take the $10,000 and Title belt win. Nebraska's Jordan Grabouski finished second, "Gasman" Cayden Carter was third, "T-Dub" Tim Ward was fourth and Wisconsin's Benji LaCrosse was fourth.
