Mills, Whitehurst, Mackenthun, Holm and Bryant Take Opening Night Wins in Britt

Last Sunday made the trip to the Benton County Speedway in Vinton to work Corners 1 and 2 so that meant their was no blog recap from that race but since mother nature won the races this weekend wanted to remind you who picked up opening night wins. Cole McNeal won the Micro Mods, Brett Vanous won the IMCA Hobby Stocks, Drew Papke won the Legends, Luke Benischek won the Sport Compacts, Tony Olson took the IMCA Sport Mods, Jay Schmidt in the IMCA Stock Cars and Jeff Aikey in the IMCA Modifieds.

This week mother nature infortunately forced the cancellation because of the rain and cold weather that once again found its way to Iowa, Next Sunday is the IMCA Late Models Season Opener with IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks, Micro Mods and Sport Compacts also racing. Tracking Packing / Hot Laps at 4:45pm and Racing at 5pm.

Okay now lets talk about  this week, the only night I was able to go to the races was Friday Night at the Hancock County Speedway for their Ruter Farms and Mason City Motor Sales Season Opener. I was working  behind the microphone with Chad Meyer for the 3rd straight year however I still kept some notes for feature action.

First feature of the night was the 10 lap IMCA Sport Compacts feature. Ryan Bryant started outside front row and he took advantage as he out dueled Oliver Monson for the top spot. Bryant led all 10 laps in going on to take the win. Joshua Uhl finished second, Jarad Gross was third, Monson fell back to fourth and "Upside Down" Bubba Brown rounded out the top five.

Quick Peformance IMCA Stock Cars 15 lap feature lived up to an old class nickname of the "Class Too Tought to Tame" as their was thrilling two and three wide racing. Kevin Opheim led the first six laps and held off several challenges through out those laps from Dan Mackenthun, Chad Palmer and Donavon Smith. Mackenthun took the lead away from KO on lap seven but knew Palmer and Smith was not going away. Mackenthun held off the challenges and took the win back to Hamburg, Minnesota. Defending Track Champ Chad Palmer finished second, Donavon Smith was third, John Campbell was fourth and Rick Mees was fifth.

The House Motorsports IMCA Sport Mods 15 lap feature had their initial start called back. When the restarted it was Autum Anderson from Mason City leading the first lap. Nate Whitehurst took the top spot away on lap two and cruised on to the win ahead of the Fett Brothers. Colby and Alec Fett battled it out for the second and third spot several times with Colby nabbing the second spot, Alec finished third. Kyle Germundson grabbed the fourth place finish ahead of Anderson.

In the MPM Marketing IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature, Drew Barglof grabbed the early race lead and had several challenges from Trevor Holm and Cory Probst. The caution came out on lap five for Brandon Nielsen coming to a stop in turn two. Three laps later on lap eight the caution came out for Blaine Hanson coming to a stop. Barglof, Holm and Probst continuing to battle for the lead. Holm stole the lead away on lap 12 and held off all challenges from Probst, who also got by Barglof, to take the win. Finishing Holm, Probst and Barglof was Malik Sampson and Cody Nielsen.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event. Jeremy Mills led from start to finish to take the win on Opening Night. Only thing to slow him down significantly was the caution on lap eight for Cody Knecht in turn four. Austin Wolf nabbed the second spot away from Kelly Shryock. Troy Swearingen finish fourth and Ben Kraus was fifth.

Final checkered flag was displayed at 10:15 pm meaning fans, drivers and crew was able to get home before the Sprinter Blast came to Iowa. Saturday was fun had to get up drive to Iowa City for my Cousin's wedding at the Rapid Creek Cidery and it was rainy all day but still had some fun at the wedding before making the drive back home after staying the night in a hotel in Coralville.

Racing continues next week with Gisch Repairs and Mason City Auto Sales Night at the Races. IMCA Modifieds, Quick Peformance IMCA Stock Cars, House Motorsports IMCA Sport Mods, MPM Marketing IMCA Hobby Stocks and IMCA Sport Compacts. Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing to Follow. Hancock County Speedway is celebrating its 25th season of racing having opened up on June 30th, 1995 after a month of rain outs.

If you are looking for pictures or videos check out my buddies Brett "BigWorm" McCollough Racing Videos and Jordan Hanisch Photography.

The plan for the week ahead is Thursday Night heading to the Stuart Speedway for the Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models Special plus IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods and IMCA Hobby Stocks. Friday Night back behind the microphone at the Hancock County Speedway, Saturday Night is still open right now with a few choices for racing and Sunday Night is back to Benton County Speedway in Vinton to work a corner. Don't worry Fort Dodge racing fans I will make a few visits this year first most likely the Dirt Knights Tour night.

Kay Wins Deery Series Opener at Tipton

Well you can add another track off the list that Foxman needed to visit as Saturday Night, I made the 1 hour and 45 minute trip over to the Deery Brothers Summer Series Opener at the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton. This was originally scheduled to be the fourth race of the season but after mother nature washed out the shows at Davenport, Maquoketa and Dubuque the week before it made it the season opener.

A beautiful Saturday to visit a new track and I was very impressed with the small little fairgrounds race track and might have to make a return visit sometime if the schedule allows. That is the reason i have been unable to attend previous shows at Tipton because I have had prior commitments or something else come up last minute to prevent making the trip over for some racing.

A total of 119 cars checked in to the DRT TRAK Racing Inc. promoted event at the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton including 36 IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series Late Models. 24 Modifieds, 30 Sport Mods, 12 Street Stocks and 17 A.I.R.S (American Iron Racing Series) were in the pit area. Final Checkered flag flew at 11:36 pm.

First feature of the night was the Street Stocks 15 lap feature event, Jeff Struck and Johnny Spaw led the field to the green flag and it was Struck that nabbed the top spot early. Only thing slowing down Struck was a caution on lap two when Ian Huff spun in turn four. Struck led from start to finish going on to take his second win in as many nights, as he picked up the Street Stocks win at Davenport on Friday Night. Cary Brown finished second, Spaw held off Joe Bonney for the third spot with Bonney finishing fourth. Jesse Owen came across the stripe in fifth.

In the Sport Mods 15 lap feature event, Brandon Setser flexed his muscles as he fend off all challenges from Kyle Olson and Austin Heacock. Three cautions came out during the event, first one on lap five and then a pair of cautions on lap 10 slowed the event but Setser was determined to not be denied the victory. Tony Olson worked his way up to finish in the second spot. Shane Paris was third, Austin Heacock was fourth and Gage Neal was fifth.

Next up was the American Iron Racing Series 15 lap feature. Mike Arp led the opening lap before a caution came out when Dan Kessler spun on the back stretch. RJ Lank took the top spot away on the restart but it was Matt Hudspeth wrestling the top spot away on lap five.  Hudspeth scored the win in his 1970 Oldsmobile Cutless. Ron Barker, Lank, Kessler and Arp rounded out the top five.

Andy Eckrich and Jeremiah Hurst led the field to the green in the 50 lap IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series Late Models feature. Eckrich took full advantage of that by grabbing the top spot but the caution came out on lap three for Darrel DeFrance and Todd Van Tassel in turn two. The caution came out again on lap four and lap 11. It was the lap 11 restart that saw Eckrich have his handsful as Justin Kay worked his way to third and then second. Kay took the top spot away on lap 13 but then the caution came out again on lap 14 and then again on the restart. The final caution came out on lap 18 for DeFrance, Van Tassel and Nagle in turn three. Kay was got a great restart and pulled away until late race lap traffic allowed Eckrich to get with in a car length. Kay crossed the finish line first to win his fifth straight Deery Series win at the 1/4 mile Cedar County Raceway. Eckrich, Hurst, Tyler Bruening and Ryan Dolan round out the top five.

Final feature of the night was the 20 lap Modifieds feature event. Dunkerton's Troy Cordes led all 20 laps to take home the trophy. Only thing slowing him down was the cautions on lap 9, lap 11 and lap 12. Finishing behind Cordes was Oskaloosa's Cayden Carter, Jeff Aikey, Wisconsin Racer Mike Mullen and Justin Kay.

Great job by Bob Wagener and Carrie Rouse for putting on such a great show and Dirt Doctor Al for prepping the track. I was extremely impressed with a well ran show even if I had an 1 hr and 45 minutes trip back home to Marshalltown.

Next race promoted by DRT TRAK Racing Inc is Friday May 3rd at the Davenport Speedway when the Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models make a visit to the 1/4 mile oval. Street Stocks, Non-Sanctioned Modifieds and Non-Sanctioned Sport Mods are also on the card. Then again on Saturday May 4th at the West Liberty Raceway 1/2 mile race track.

DRT TRAK Racing Inc promoting numerous races in Eastern Iowa through out the summer you can check them out on Facebook or go to http://drttrakracing.com/

Next up for the Deery Brothers Summer Series is a visit to the Independence Motor Speedway on Saturday April 27th and a rescheduled event at the Dubuque Speedway on Sunday April 28th named Herschel Roberts & Ray Guss Sr. Memorial moved over from Maquoketa.

For more information on the Deery Brothers Summer Series go to The Deery Brothers Summer Series Facebook Page or go to IMCA.com.

Pictures from last nights races are now posted on the Trackisde Report Facebook Page or you can just click the link: Tipton Deery Brothers Special 4-20-19.

Sunday Night its off to the Benton County Speedway in Vinton to work corners one and two again for Promoter Mick Trier and Race Director Mike Van Genderen. The camera will be most likely put a side for a couple of weeks since Friday Night its off to the Season Opener at the Hancock County Speedway since I have a family wedding to attend on Saturday that will force me to miss racing action on both Saturday and Sunday next week.

Bruening, Ward, Meyer, McBirnie, Anderson and Morrill Claim Victories on Sleeping Angels Night

Marshalltown may have got the Frost Buster in a two weeks ago but after last week's Bill Davis Memorial and Ryan Ashton Racing Season Openers were cancelled because of mother nature, racing finally resumed at the high-banked 1/4 mile. Friday Night produced some fantastic racing all night long and several features where settled coming to the checkers.

Sleeping Angels Foundation Night now became the Season Opener Night for track points with a the Malvern Bank Super Late Models Racing Series making their first ever appearance to the Marshalltown Speedway. 39 Late Models checked in to nab the top prize of $2,000 in the first race of the Iowa Challenge for SLMR. Late Models. The Late Models did group qualifying, heat races and b-features to determined the feature starting line ups.

146 cars checked including the Late Models, 26 IMCA Hobby Stocks, 31 IMCA Sport Mods, 19 IMCA Stock Cars, 21 IMCA Modifieds and 10 Mod Lites. Final checkered flag was displayed at 11:35 pm.

First feature of the night was the 15 lap MADCRA Mod Lites feature event despite their only being 10 cars, it was still an exciting race that went caution free. "Huggie Bear" Joel Huggins grab the top spot early but had to fend of challenges from Randy Bryan. Mike Morrill worked the top side of the speedway to his liking and made it a three car battle for the top spot. Morrill grabbed the lead away on lap four and cruised on to take win number one of the season ahead of Huggins, Bryan, "Dry Slick" Joe Glick and Tanner Gannon.

Before a lap was scored in the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature, the caution came out when Kaden Reynolds spun in turn two and William Klosterman went off the top side of turn two. Mike Kincaid jumped out to the early and held off several challenges from David Rieks and then Shannon Anderson. The caution came out again on lap five when Eric Knutson spun in turn two. On the restart, Anderson got by both Kincaid and Rieks to take the top spot away. Anderson tried to pull away but neither driver was going away and when three late race cautions forced restarts, Anderson knew he had his hands full. Lap 11 caution was for Knutson off top side of turn two meanwhile Ben Newhouse and Stoney Leonard got together in turn two. Lap 12 caution for Craig Lovig in turn one and then on Lap 13 for Zach Hovell in turn two. Anderson took the feature win with Rieks in second, Kincaid in third, Reynolds in fourth and Gary Pfantz was fifth.

Austin Schrage started on the pole in the IMCA Sport Mods 18 lap event and took full advantage by leading early. The first caution came out on lap three for Brian Lepa and Chance Titus in turn two.  Schrage had Cory Van Zante, Thomas Egenberger and Jake McBirnie behind him on the restart and McBirnie worked his way to the number two spot on lap four. On lap five, McBirnie made the pass on Schrage for the top spot and a lap later on lap six, the caution came out for Jack Housley in turn two. McBirnie got a great restart and looked like he would be heading on to take the easy win but a caution on lap 16 for Brady Hilmer in turn two forced a green-white-checkered finish. McBirnie held off Egenberger, Austin Kaplan, Cory Rose and Van Zante to take the feature win.

The IMCA Stock Cars once again lived up to their nickname of the "Class To Tough Too Tame" in their 18 lap feature event. Steve Meyer wrestled the lead from fellow front row starter Todd Reitzler early, however Reitzler did not go away. Meyer, Reitzler and Jeff Mueller battled it out for the lead with Meyer fending off the challenges until lap six when Mueller took the lead away. Mueller running the bottom side of the speedway with Meyer remaining on the top side of the speedway, that came beneficial of trying to get back to the lead. Meyer took the top spot back on lap 14 but Ricky Thornton Jr worked his way to second on lap 15. Thornton made several attempts to pull sliders on Meyer in the final three laps but the Stock Car Veteran was not going to be denied his first win at Marshalltown in three years. Thornton, Mueller, Jay Schmidt and Damon Murty rounded out the top five.

Up next was the Malvern Bank Super Late Models Series 25 lap feature event. "Real Deal" Nick Deal dominated the early going in the feature by wrestling the top spot away from Kyle Berck. Deal and Berck race side-by-side for the first three laps before Tyler Bruening put himself in the battle for the top spot as did "G-Money" Richie Gustin. Deal led until he spun in turn two after contact from Bruening forcing the only yellow flag to come out. Bruening inherited the lead and Deal was sent to the tail for being stopped on the track at the time of the yellow. Bruening held off Gustin and Berck on the restart and would pull away. Brueing was only slowed by lap traffic late in the race but nobody could take advantage of that as he headed on to take the feature win. Gustin finished second, 13th place starter Bill Leighton finish third, Berck was fourth and Andy Eckrich was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event. Troy Cordes grabbed the early lead but the caution came out just after one lap was scored when Jacob Murray spun in turn two and Stephen Streeter spun in turn one. Before another lap was scored the caution came out again when Dalton McKenney went off the top side of turn two and Ronn Lauritzen spun in turn one. When the race resumed Cordes knew he would have some challenges in Tim Ward, Jimmy Gustin, Cayden Carter and Joel Rust. Cordes held off all initial challenges until "T-Dub" Tim Ward took the top spot away on lap six. Ward held off challenges and dodged the lap traffic to take the win ahead of Gustin, Carter, Rust and Cordes.

Next Friday Night at Marshalltown Speedway will be Kruse Family & Casey's General Stores Night at the Races plus Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks make their first appearance of the season. IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks and MADCRA Mod Lites. Hot Laps at 6:55 pm and Racing at 7:30 pm.

Took pictures during Hot Laps, Time Trials for Late Models and Heat Races and posted them on the Trackside Report Facebook Page in the photo album called Marshalltown Season Opener + SLMR 4-19-19, If you use my pictures please give me credit for them as I do it because I love this sport of racing.

Next up for me as I type this I am still undecided if I want to head to Cedar County Raceway in Tipton for the Deery Brothers Summer Series Season Opener, Boone Speedway for another night of weekly racing, Season Opener at Hamilton County Speedway or Crawford County Speedway in Denison for Spring Fling. All will be great shows as will the Annual Slocum 50 race at 34 Raceway in West Burlington.

Sunday will be the Benton County Speedway to work the corner again for Promoter Mick Trier and Race Director Mike Van Genderen. Next week the only race on the schedule is Friday Night at the Hancock County Speedway in Britt for Season Opener sponsored by Ruter Farms and Mason City Auto Sales. As I have my cousin's wedding next Saturday and I am going to take next Sunday off from Vinton to recover from said festivities.

Thornton, Daniels, Havens, Anderson and Berghahn Take Tim Stevens Memorial Wins at Stuart

Mother Nature may have been rain else where on Wednesday Night but the Stuart Speedway seemed to be spared from the liquid sunshine. However a cold front did come through making it really cold as wind chills dipped down into the the 30s at time during feature time.

Despite all of that it was a beautiful crisp night for racing at the Stuart Speedway for the Inaugural Tim Stevens Memorial sponsored by Big Load Trailer Sales & Interstate Power Systems. 83 cars signed in to race for extra money on a night to remember a great man who passed away last August. Tim was not only a fellow racer but he was an amazing friend and always loved to hear where or what races were next up for me so he could either read about or see pictures. Tim will not be forgotten so Big Daddy if you are reading this up in heaven, we all missed you.

Before feature action, there was a special Pole Position Challenge where the heat race winners in Hobby Stocks, Sport Mods, Stock Cars and Modifieds all race on the track at the same time with Hobby Stocks starting out front, Modifieds starting right in front but a lap down, Stock Cars quarter of the way behind the hobby stocks and sport mods starting a half a lap behind the Hobby Stocks. Richie Gustin made up the ground and took the win over Corey Madden, Mike Nichols, Ricky Thornton, Ronnie Hults and Josh Daniels. Gustin takes home a $270 gift card from Pole Position Raceway (formerly MB2 Raceway).

First feature of the night was the Bat Wing Chassis Outlaw Mini Mods. Gage Hilgenberg led the first lap before Luke Daniels took the top spot away on lap two. Hilgenberg spun in turn two just after completing lap two. Bobby Daniels pulled off with mechanic issues leaving Hilgenberg and Luke Daniels to race it out. Luke Daniels lead the remaining laps to take the win in the event that was cut short at 8 laps when he was the only one running when Hilgenberg spun again in turn two.

Shannon Anderson started third in the IMCA Hobby Stocks 16 lap feature event but by the end of lap one he found himself in the lead. Anderson had Adam Ayers, Dylan Nelson and Corey Madden all trying to take the top spot away from him but Anderson held off all challenges until the caution came out on lap 11 for Dallas Larson spinning in turn two. Anderson and the field saw the caution come out again after lap 12 was scored when Dylan Nelson spun in turn four. Anderson and Madden raced side-by-side the last 4 laps each pulling sliders on each other, Madden had the lead at the white flag but Anderson pulled the slider and edged out Madden to the line for the win. Ayers finished third, 13th place starter John Watson ended up fourth and Brandon Cox was fifth.

IMCA Northern Sport Mods 18 lap feature event was next up on quarter mile bullring. Kody Havens took full advantage of starting on the pole by grabbing the early race lead. Havens had Hunter Longnecker trying to take the top spot away but the caution came out on lap three for Matt Hays in turn one and then again on lap five for Mark Menard in the topside of turn two. Havens and the field again saw the caution come out on lap six for Tommy Hensley and Mitchell Morris in turn four. Havens was determined not to be denied but saw one final caution be displayed on lap 13, Hays in turns three and four. Havens went on to take the win ahead of Doug Smith, 15th place starter Chase Rudolf, Colton Nelson and Longnecker.

Mitchell Bunch led the first seven laps in the IMCA Sport Compacts 15 lap feature event before Denny Berghahn Jr took the top spot away. Berghahn and Bunch battled it out and when the caught the back half of the field each one of them would be slowed by lap traffic. Bunch took back the lead on lap 11 and held until lap 14 when he was slowed by lap traffic Berghahn took the lead back and went on to take the win ahead of Bunch. Jake Benischek, Colton Garside and Nathan Castellano rouned out the top five.

In the IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature event, it was Josh Daniels leading from start to finish however early on had to hold off Anthony Goldsberry. The red flag came out on lap seven when "Buckwild" Buck Schafroth rolled after clipping infield tire in turn four. Schafroth climbed from the car. Daniels had to battle with Todd Van Eaton on the restart but held off early challenges from him. Daniels and the field saw the caution come out on lap 12 for Goldsberry in turn two. Daniels knew it was not going to be long before Mike Nichols was going to be making his way to the front and that was true on the restart when Nichols got by Van Eaton for the second spot. Daniels held off Nichols to nabbed the opening night win. Nichols finished second, Brandon Pruitt was third, Van Eaton fell back to fourth and Chad Legere was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the 20 lap feature event and after pole sitter Bob Daniels opted to go to the tail that moved a familiar driver Ricky Thornton Jr to the top spot. Thornton lead from started to finish and never was challenged in route the victory. Richie Gustin tried to chase him down but settled for a runner-up finish. Hometown Favorite Josh Gilman finished third ahead of Kyle Brown and Scott Bash.

Special Thanks to all the sponsors who helped out with the Inaugural Tim Stevens Memorial Race and Thanks to Mike Van Genderen for making it happen for Tammy to remember Tim in a great way.

Thornton, Smith, Thompson, Rudolph and Zehm Take Season Opening Wins in Boone

April Showers Bring May Flowers is the old saying well April Showers means racing gets cancelled. This week the plan was to attend the Bill Davis Memorial on Thursday and Ryan Ashton Racing Season Opener on Friday at Marshalltown Speedway but mother nature had other plans. Mid week rain and the spring cold spell forced cancellations. Bill Davis Memorial will now be on Thursday July 11th during the Central Iowa Fair in Marshalltown and the Season Opener will be Friday plus the Malvern Bank Super Late Model Racing Series will be on hand competing.
Saturday also saw its fair share of races being cancelled except for the race track on plot of land in Boone. Rod and the Guys got the track ready to go despite the cold weather but it created some exciting racing action all night long as drivers begin the hunt to nab the track championship.

First feature of the night was the MyRacePass Mod Lites 15 lap event with Joe Glick and Justin Rankin leading the field to the green. Rankin nabbed the top spot early and held off challenges from Glick and Randy Bryan until Bryan made the top shelf work to his liking on lap five. Bryan was followed by Bryan Zehm and Mike Kennedy into second and third. Bryan held off initial challenges from those two until a caution came out on lap 11 for Bryan Compart coming to a stop on the back stretch. Bryan and Zehm battled it out with Bryan holding on until the final set of corners. Zehm made a power move and edged Bryan out at the line to take the win. Bryan finished a close second ahead of Kennedy, Charlie Brown and Joel Huggins.

Sioux City Hot Shoe Cody Thompson started on the pole in the Elmquist Towing IMCA Northern Sport Mods 18 lap event. Thompson was never challenged through out the event and only lap traffic slowing him down but he cruised to an easy win. Kyle Olson from Cedar Rapids grabbed the second spot on lap 11 from Gage Neal, who finished third. Doug Smith finished fourth and Tara Longnecker finished fifth.

Ricky Thornton Jr and Tim Ward was on the front row for the Snap-On Tools IMCA Modifieds 20 lap event which saw all 28 cars start the feature. Thornton and Ward battled the first two laps before the caution came out when Eric Elliott found himself spun around in turn four. Thornton got a great restart and began to pull away even though Ward was not going away. On lap 10 just after the field took the cross sticks, the caution came out for Russ Dickerson sitting in the topside of turn three forcing a 10 lap shootout. Thornton got a great restart and went on to take the win with Ward finishing second. Jimmy Gustin, Joel Rust and Anthony Hofbauer rounded out the top five.

The Arnold Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars lived up to their name as the "Class too Tough to Tame" all night long and when they rolled out for their 18 lap feature, you where sure it was going to be a good one. Devin Smith started on the pole but he was challenged first by Robert Stofer than Jeff Mueller during the feature. Smith led the entire way despite having to fend off challenges, lap traffic and a caution on lap 11 for Jason York in turn three. Smith took the win, Mueller was second, Donavon Smith was third, Frost Buster Winner Jay Schmidt was fourth and David Smith was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the Pickett Salvage IMCA Hobby Stocks 12 lap feature. John Watson led the first six laps before he was spun in turn three. Watson kept going to avoid bring out the caution but that handed the lead over to Solomon Bennett. Bennett saw Aaron Rudolph take the lead away on lap nine and it was Rudolph going on to take the win ahead of Adam Ayers, Matt McDonald, Shaun Wirtz and Dylan Nelson.

Racing action at Boone Speedway continues next Saturday Night with Hicklin Powersports UTV / Side by Side Races / Harris Auto Racing Saturday Night Series Night 2. Snap-On Tools IMCA Modifieds, Arnold Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars, Elmquist Towing IMCA Northern Sport Mods, Pickett Salvage IMCA Hobby Stocks and MyRacePass Mod Lites all on the card. April and May Races at Boone will have Pit Gates Opening at 4:30pm, Grandstands at 5pm, Hot Laps at 5:45pm and Racing at 6:30pm.

Since the Benton County Speedway races for sunday being cancelled next up on the racing schedule is Wednesday Night visit to the Stuart Speedway for the Inaugural Tim Stevens Memorial, a race to honor a great man who passed away last August. Friday Night, the plan is to be at the Marshalltown Speedway for the Season Opener / SLMR Race, Saturday Night is open as of right now and Sunday Night will be in Benton County Speedway if they are able to race.

Thornton, Schmidt, Schmitt, Stanton and Thompson Claim Boone Frost Buster Victories

Saturday afternoon, I made the 53 mile trek from Marshalltown to Boone for what was suppose to be night four of the IMCA Frost Buster Series but do to mother nature and other issues it was Night 2 of 2. Drivers had several options on Saturday with Jackson County Speedway in Maquoketa, 34 Raceway in West Burlington and Bethany Speedway in Bethany, Missouri all racing but it did not effect the car count in Boone.

A total of 187 cars checked in to tame Iowa's Action Track on Saturday. Snap-on Tools IMCA Modifieds had the most with 53 cars signed in, Arnold Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars and Elmquist Towing IMCA Northern Sport Mods each had 47 cars. Pickett Salvage IMCA Hobby Stocks had 27 cars and the K1 Race Gear IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars had 13 cars.

Beaver Dam, Wisconsin Driver Brandon Schmit started outside front row in the Elmquist Towing IMCA Northern Sport Mods 25 lap feature event and he took full advantage by jumping out to the early lead. Dusty Masolini also started on the front row and stayed in tow of Schmit as did Jake McBirnie, Keokuk's Daniel Fellows and Hunter Longnecker. Schmit saw the caution come out on lap 7 for debris in turn three. Schmit held off all challenges and dodged his way through lap traffic to grab the Frost Buster win ahead of McBirnie. Longnecker took third, Fellows was fourth and Matthew Looft from Swea City finished fifth.

K1 Race Gear IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars 20 lap event was up next on the track. 2018 Track Champion Tyler Thompson and Lincoln, Nebraka Driver Chase Weiler led the field to the green flag. Thompson jumped out to the lead early and sixth place starter Mike Houseman Jr was right in the tire tracks of Thompson the whole way. Thompson was only slowed by the cautions on lap three for Brian Efkamp off turn two, lap four for Zach Glaser off turn three and lap eight for Nathan Weiler in turn two. Thompson was not going to be denied as he took the win ahead of Houseman. Bennet, Nebraska's Trevor Grossenbacher was third, Glaser came back to finish fourth and Weiler came back to finish fifth.

Jimmy Gustin and Sean Barragan led the field to the green in the Snap-On Tools IMCA Modifieds 25 lapper. Jimmy Gustin led the first two laps before Ricky Thornton Jr. took the top spot away on lap three. Thornton began to pull away until the caution came out on lap 10 for Eric Elliott sitting in the topside of turn one. Thornton got a great restart and was not going to be denied the Frost Buster Win. Gustin held on to the runner up finish, 2018 Super Nationals winner Jeff Aikey finished third, Kyle Brown finished fourth and Josh Gilman was fifth.

In the Arnold Motor Supply IMCA Stock Cars 25 lap feature event, it was a driver known as "Buck Wild" Buck Schaforth grabbing the top spot early but just after the first lap was scored in the books the caution came out for Bob Ahrendsen and Tyler Pickett getting together on the back stretch. Schaforth saw "Napa Jay" Jay Schmidt take the top spot away on lap three. Schmidt was never really challenged the rest of the way and not even the cautions on lap 12 (Kevin Opheim in turn two) and lap 13 (Aaron Karcz and AJ Zimmerman on front stretch) prevented him from making the trip to victory lane. Donavon Smith ran second most of the way by Schmidt. 12th place starter Devin Smith finished third, Elijah Zevenbergen was fourth and Schaforth fell back to fifth.

Final feature of the night was the Pickett Salvage IMCA Hobby Stocks 25 lap feature. Eric Stanton started on the pole and he took full advantage by leading all the laps. Only thing slowing him down was the caution on lap three for Jeremiah Andrews in turn two or late race lap traffic. Stanton made the trek to victory lane ahead of Adam Ayers, Worthington, Minnesota's Keeran Sampson, Daniel Smith and Brainerd, Minnesota's Tim Gonska.

Grabouski, Brown, Carter and Watson Bust Frost First at Marshalltown

Finally able to attend my first race in 2019 since the World Nationals last fall, even though it had to wait extra few days since Frost Busters at Stuart and Vinton being cancelled. Stuart's Frost Buster was orginally going to race but because of a water main repair in stuart and frozen pipes at the track they were forced to cancelled after moving from Wednesday to Thursday. Vinton's Frost Buster was cancelled because of the long winter, track conditions was unbearable meaning they were forced to cancel.

Stuart will open the season with the Inaugural Tim Stevens Memorial, honor a dear friend to me who we lost last August, on Wednesday April 17th. Modifieds, Stock Cars, Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks, Sport Compacts and Bat Wing Outlaw Mini Mods. Vinton (Benton County Speedway) will open their season on Sunday April 14th with Mods, Stocks, Sport Mods, Hobbys, Sport Compacts and Mini Mods.

On to the Frost Buster at Marshalltown Speedway, the racing was fantastic all night despite the late start. Officially 173 cars signed in to the pit area for the Frost Buster sponsored by 141 Speedway and Left Turn Lounge. 46 IMCA Modifieds, 46 IMCA Stock Cars, 42 Sport Mods and 39 Hobby Stocks.

First feature of the night was the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap event, Darin Dezwarte and John Watson led the field to the green flag. Watson jumped out to the lead and never looked back in the only feature that went caution free, Watson took the win. Corey Madden from Avoca started fourth and follow Watson the entire distance but could not take the lead. Dylan Nelson came home third, Minnesota's Trevor Holm moved up four spots to finish fourth, and Adam Ayers was fifth.

Nate Whitehurst from Mason City grabbed the early lead in the IMCA Sport Mods 20 lap event. Austin Schrage, Brayton Carter and Doug Smith in hot pursuit to take the lead away from Whitehurst but could not until a caution came out on lap seven for Carter VanDenBerg spinning in turn two. On the restart, Carter running second would make the move and take the top spot away on the exit of turn two however Whitehurst would try to return the favor in turn four and slid too high and spun out in turn four forcing the caution to come out once again. Carter head off Smith on the restart and the driver known as "Speedy Bray went on to the win. Smith finished second, Keokuk's Daniel Fellows was third, Cedar Rapids's Tony Olson moved up 8 spots to finish fourth, Nebraska's Tyler Nerud was fifth.

The IMCA Stock Cars known as the "Class To Tough Too Tame" was up next on the speedway and once again they lived up to that name as several heavy hitters Damon Murty, Elijah Zevenbergen and Jay Schmidt had to come from a B-Feature but they all put a show in the feature. Before a lap could be officially completed a couple of cars spun in turn four and on the frontstretch forcing a complete restart. Hamburg, Minnesota Driver Dan Mackenthun took the early lead until the caution came out again after 1 lap was scored when a bumper was sitting in turn four. Mackenthun lost the lead to Kyle Brown on lap three and would fade back to sixth. Brown lead the remaining laps but knew he had some heavy hitters coming to take the top spot away. Murty took the second spot away from Smith on lap 13 but Smith refused to let that go as he would try to get back by Murty. Smith and Murty get together on lap 16 in turn two forcing the yellow to come out sending Smith pit side for questionable driving and Murty to the tail for being involved. The caution came out again for Debris in turn two on the restart. Brown held on to take the win. Jay Schmidt worked his way through the field to come across the line but MSD Ignition Box was deemed illegal handing the second over to Veteran Brian Blessington, who came from 12th. 16th place starter Donavon Smith was third, nineteenth place starter John Oliver Jr was fourth and Wisconsin's Trent Nolan moved up 6 spots to finish fifth.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Modifieds 25 lap event and you knew this would be a Jim Dandy kind of race since Tim Ward and Nebraska's hotshoe Jordan Grabouski started on the front row. Grabouski would grab the early lead and never really looked back. A pair of cautions flew on lap two for Jeremy Mills off turn two and Lap six for Karl Brewer going over turn two. Grabouski was not going to let either of those cautions bother him and neither did lap traffic. Ricky Thornton Jr started sixth and came across the line in second. Tim Ward finished third, 10th place starter Cayden Carter  finished fourth and 13th place starter Joel Rust finished fifth.

Racing resumes at the Marshalltown Speedway on Thursday with the Inaugural Bill Davis Memorial for IMCA National and Regional Points and then again on Friday with the Ryan Ashton Racing Season Opener for track points. Modifieds, Stock Cars, Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks and Mod Lites are racing both nights with Hot Laps at 7p and Racing at 7:30p.

Frost Buster finishes up tonight at the Boone Speedway with Pits Opening at 2p, Grandstands at 3p, Hot Laps at 4p and Racing at 5p. Modifieds, Stock Cars, Sport Mods and Hobby Stocks are all racing as is the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars.

I took some pictures from last night during hot laps and they are posted on the Trackside Report Facebook Page or you can click on this link : Marshalltown Frost Buster 4-5-19
