Sunday night brought the return of Speedway Motors IMCA Weekly Racing back to Sports Park Raceway for the first time since 2019; it also brought the return to Sunday night racing after a couple of years trying different nights. The hope for track owner and promoter Jeff Frevert, operations manager Sarah Stewart and track prep manager Brandon Toftee by doing that is to have continued growth and great racing every night.

A total of ninety-six cars signed in to check out the newly configured Sports Park Raceway on Sunday, and many, I would say, were rather impressed with the racing action. The car count may have been low in a few classes, but the racing was still great all through the night. Great job by Brandon and Jeff for creating a great racing surface, Sarah for keeping things rolling, and Rodney Tomlinson on the horn with the PA announcing. All the night got started with hot laps at 5 p.m., and the races were over shortly after 8:30 p.m., not bad. So if you are on the fence about making the trip to Sports Park Raceway, don't be, and make at least one trip to support them.

The first feature of the night was the 10-lap Matt's Tyre Service IMCA Sport Compacts feature. Levi Volkert led the first lap, but the hot shoe from Guthrie Centre, Rece Hayes, took the top spot away on lap two. The only caution came out on lap three when Alyssa Thies came to a stop at the top of turn four. Hayes fended off Volkert and tenth-place starter Tyler Fiebelkorn on the restart. Volkert faded back, but Fiebelkorn tried to apply constant pressure on Hayes. There were parts of the track where Fiebelkorn was faster, but there were parts where Hayes was faster. Hayes hung on to capture the victory. Fiebelkorn settled for a runner-up finish, Charles Prime took third, and Kaytee DeVries was in fourth. and Brooke Osler in fifth.

Pickett Salvage Vintage Cars was up next for their 10-lap feature event. There were five Vintage Street Stocks and two Vintage Super Stocks; however, one of the Super Stocks broke in hot laps, so feature time they ran together. Dino Rodish led all ten laps in the feature event and won the Super Stocks; meanwhile, Todd Jansonius ran second and won the Street Stocks. Following Jansonius was Mark Chance, Rex Jansonius, Brent McClendon and Logan Frazier.

Culver's of Fort Dodge and Carroll 4.6L Crown Vics 12 lap feature saw Nick Sawdy grab the race lead as the Hogans : Nick and Nate battled out behind him. Sawdy looked smooth out front, and the only caution came out on lap five when Brandon Erpelding slowed at the top of turn four with a flat tire. Sawdy went on to take the win with Nick Hogan in second, Nate Hogan in third, Cyle Marsh in fourth and Cody Fogelman in fifth.

It was time to do the Wild Thing, as the Pickett Salvage IMCA Hobby Stocks 15-lap feature was next out on the speedway. Roger Haupt jumped out to the race lead and held on to the top spot through five cautions. The first caution on lap one for Brad Gilliland off the top of turn three; the next one on lap two for debris in turn four. Lap seven had a caution for Gilliland spinning in turn four; lap nine for Adam Tiernan going off the top of turn four. The following restart on lap nine saw the red flag when Jeremiah Goughnour barrel-rolled off the top of turn three; he climbed from the car okay. Will Smith worked his way from seventh and powered on the final restart to capture the victory. Dan Hanselman took second; Drew Barglof was third. twenty-second place starter Brett Maasdam came home fourth and fourteenth place starter Jacob Monson was fifth.

Mike Smith jumped out to a sizable lead in the White Transfer & Storage IMCA Northern Sport Mods 15-lap feature event. Smith had a full straightaway lead prior to the caution coming out on lap eleven. The first caution was for Drew Fett sliding off the top of turns three and four, and the initial restart was called back. Smith went on to take the feature win ahead of Alec Fett, ninth-place starter Rocky Caudle, Jeremiah Reed, and Brayden Shepherd.

Troy Jerovetz and Ryan Roath led the field to green in the Marsh Concrete IMCA Stock Cars 15-lap feature event. Jerovetz lived up to the nickname of "The General" as he took the race lead, but shortly after lap one was scored, the caution came out when Tyler Nelsen and Josh Monthei spun in turn four. Jerovetz continued to lead the way until the final caution on lap five for John Ades, Daniel Ayers, and Nelsen spinning in turn three. Scott Olson powered on the restart and never looked back, going on to take the feature win. Jerovetz, Roath, ninth-place starter Johnathon Logue, and tenth-place starter Tyler Pickett rounded out the top five.

Final full field feature was the United Plant Services IMCA Modifieds 15 lap feature event. Chaz Baca outwrestled Jeff James on the restart and look as strong as he did Friday night in Marshalltown and Saturday in Boone. Baca would go on and win for third night in a row and won by a margin of 1.823 seconds. Jeremy Mills ran second the entire way, Trevor Fitz got into third on lap three and finish there. Matthew Looft and Brad Bergren finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Only one IMCA Late Model signed in to compete, and that was Dan Demey from Denison. During the heat and feature, Dino Rodish would bring his Super Stock Vintage out to give him somebody to play with. The IMCA Late Model guys always complain about having somewhere to race and only one showing up; now I know there was at least another one planning to come, and that was Jenna Johnson from Mitchellville, but they had truck trouble. I promise you will love racing there in Fort Dodge.
