Walk Off Ending to the 2023 Season at Warren County Speedway

So Friday night I was asked if I was planning to head to Warren County Speedway for the Little League Night / Season Championships because they may need me to fill in if their primary announcer could not make it because of work. I said yes I had planned on it so I prepared to take pictures or announce if needed.

Once it was known I was not needed to announce races, it meant I was prepared to take pictures instead so I ended up taking almost 600 pictures in hot laps and heat races before putting the camera away to keep notes during the feature. All pictures are posted on the Trackside Report by Foxman Facebook Page in a photo album called Warren County Little League Night / Season Championships 8-26-23

It was a beautiful cool night compared to the rest of the week for the 2023 season to walk off on in the sunset at the Warren County Speedway. The track showed character but a large part of that was due to the extremely high humidity all week, Brandan Long and the crew worked it in and it made for some fantastic racing. Final checkered flag came out at 10:22pm.

First feature of the night was the Micro Sprints 20 lap feature event, The Initial start called back as Brady Edwards stalled in turn two. On the restart, Brantley "The Bullet" Tjaden grabbed the top spot and pulled away from the rest of the field and appeared to be heading on to take the win. Tjaden caught lap traffic and unfortunately on lap 15, Tjaden rolled in turn four after encounter a lap car and tractor tire. That gave the lead over to Travis Rewerts and he would hang to take his third win at Warren County this season. Luke Lane came home in second, Jackson Gray was third, Matt Botts in fourth and Derrike Clark in fifth. With Tjaden going out on lap 15 and falling back to a tenth place finish, that allowed Lane to take the track championship by 5 points.

The caution came out as they was a parking lot in turn one and two of the TruBank Cruisers 16 lap feature event. Jason and Clay Collins took the race lead on the restart and managed to lead from start-to-finish to claim their second win of the season. Chris and Shelbie Mitchell was second, Will Aldridge and Co-Driver was third, Will Shivers and Travis Shivers was fourth, Isaac Seger and Co-Driver was fifth. Chris and Shelbie Mitchell would take the 2023 track championship.

Next up was the DeYarman Ford Junior Front Wheel Drive 15 lap feature event and before a lap was scored the caution came out when a chain reaction that resulted in Emberli Van Clark spinning around in turn two. Gabriel Hoover out wrestled Wyatt Routh for the race lead early. The caution came out again on lap four for debris in turn two and then again on the restart for Julia Langille in turn two. Hoover was determined to not be denied the victory as he hit his marks and went on to take his second win at Warren County. Katelynn Watts made a strong surge but came home with a second place finish, Van Clark came back to finish third, Langille in fourth and Routh was fifth. Watts claimed the 2023 track championship

The pattern continue with the caution coming out before a single lap scored in the eighteen lap Williams Machine Shop Open Figure 8 feature when Aubrey McKasson and David Burnell spun under the flag stand. Dylan McKasson jumped out to the race lead on the following restart after out dueling his sister Aubrey McKasson. The caution came out again on lap three when Colton Wicker came to a stop in the figure eight. Dylan McKasson got a great restart and fended off a challenge from David Burnell until the caution came out on lap 11 for heavy smoke coming out of Casey McKasson hot rod. Burnell got by Dylan McKasson on the restart and went on to take his six feature win of the season. Dylan McKasson finished second, Aubrey McKasson was third, Casey McKasson in fourth and Colton Wicker in fifth. Burnell was the 2023 track champion.

The caution came out before a single lap was completed in the 16 lap Bussanmas Heating & Cooling Stock Figure 8 feature event when J Milton Tarter Jr broke the front end after clipping a infield tire. Joey Young got a great restart and fended off Chris Mitchell, Young pulled away however lap traffic late in the race allowed Mitchell to get to the back bumper of Young. Young held on to take his fifth win of the season in Indy. Mitchell, Brock Bush, Joe Grubbs and Seth Parker rounded out the top five.

Mitchell and Bush tied for the 2023 track championship in the Stock Figure 8. So unofficially, If they use a similar tiebreaking procedures it goes down by finishes. Both of them had 1 feature win so then you move on to second place finishes, that goes to Mitchell as he had five with Bush having 1. So unofficially the 2023 track champion is Chris Mitchell.

Matt Breeden took the race lead early in the Phillips's Floor Trucks 18 lap feature event. The first caution came out on lap four for debris from Robby Dittmer in turn tone and two as Travis Shivers had a flat tire. Breeden continued to lead until the caution came out again on lap seven for Dittmer slowing in turn three and four. The following restart saw the caution come out again when Clay Collins pulled out of line and Joe Graves nose cover came off. Cole Becker would Intimidate his way around Breeden on the restart and never look back going on to claim his third win of the season. Breeden, Cole Edgington, Collins and Graves round out the top five. Breeden took the 2023 track championship.

Hawkeye Auto Salvage Hobby Stocks 16 lap feature event saw Michael Eddinger fend off Garrett Croy and Travis Fenton early for the restart. Eddinger pulled away only to see the cautions come out on lap seven when Kylea Ren was spun in turn one by Taylor Wood. Eddinger fended off the challenges on the restart but shortly after a lap was scored the caution came out when Braelynn Long spun in turn two. Eddinger was determined to take the win and he held on to claim his first of the season in Indy. Croy finished second, Fenton came home third, Jason Collins was fourth and Blake McCann was fifth. Croy won the 2023 Track championship.

Final feature of the night was the Front Wheel Drive 16 lap feature event, Terry Bickford jumped out to the race lead and pulled away until the caution came out on lap six for Cody Howe stopping in turn four. Bickford got a great restart and the caution came out again on lap nine for Jerry Glass. Bickford held on to claim his fifth feature win and that also gave him the 2023 track championship. Michael Gardner, Michael Gardner III, Colbin Funke and Matt Pool rounded out the top five.

That puts a wrap on the 2023 Racing Season at the Warren County Speedway in Indianola. So be on the look out in the off season for the 2024 racing schedule.

Murty Family Affair In Victory Lane and Gustin Gets Redemption During the Showdown Shakedown in Motown

The Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway wrapped up track points in all classes except the Mod Lites last week so this week was the IMCA Mod Lite Championship Event. It was also the Iowa's Best Country KIX101.1 / KFJB 1230 AM 93.9 FM Showdown Shakedown in Motown since the rain date for season championship night was not needed, it became a draw/redraw special.

A total of eighty-six cars including eight outlaw cruisers checked into tame the high banks of the Marshalltown Speedway for the Showdown Shakedown in Motown. The racing action did not disappoint as during the features they went two, three and sometimes four or five wide on the night. Racing action started later than normal to avoid the final day of the heat wave, the first green was a little after 8pm and the final checkered flag was displayed at 10:18pm.

First feature of the night was the Knight Sanitation IMCA Mod Lites 15 lap Championship feature event for track points. Darrick Knutsen jumped out to the race lead and fend off pressure from Cory Sonner. Knutsen held the top spot until lap seven when Jon Padilla worked his way through the field to take the top spot away. Padilla was able to hold on and take his fourth win in Motown. Sonner finished second, Josh May finished third, Joe Glick was fourth and Brandon Freeburg was fifth. May clinched the track championship.

Brady Hilmer grabbed the race lead early in the Rugged Radios IMCA Sport Mods 18 lap feature event from the pole position. That was short lived as Logan Anderson took the top spot away on lap three. The only race caution came out on lap five when Carter VanDenBerg came to a stop in turn four. Anderson held off Jenae Gustin and Hilmer temporarily because Gustin was able to claim the top spot away on lap ten. Gustin was able to pull away and get redemption after losing last week's feature, for Gustin that was win number four in Motown this season. Anderson, Hilmer, Brayton Carter and Joe Docekal rounded out the top five.

In the "Class Too Tough Too Tame" IMCA Stock Cars presented by Drury Automotive and Truck Repair 20 lap feature event, it was Terry "Scooter" Dulin leading the first two laps. The "Chelsea Charger" Damon Murty took the top spot away on lap three and never looked back going on to claim his third win in Motown. Jake Sachau tried to make a late race challenge on Murty but ran out of time and settled for second. Dave Atcher came home in third, Todd Reitzler was fourth and Austin Kaplan was fifth.

Dallon Murty led from start to finish in the 20 lap Tire Demon by Love Tap IMCA Modified feature event. After fending off Charlie Mohr and Dylan Thornton, Murty pulled away until cautions came on lap nine for Austin Mehmen in turn two. Murty had to contend with Joel Rust following that caution, he was able to fend him off until Rust was able to make the move before lap 16 was scored the caution came out for Kyle Roose in turn one, that gave Murty back the lead. Murty held off the pressure from Rust to claim his first win in Motown this season. Rust came up short and finished second. Mohr, Thornton and Paul Nagle rounded out the top five.

Last week, Corey VanDerWilt claimed the 2023 Track Championship, this week he lead thirteen of the fifteen laps of the Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Hobby Stocks, this was the first win of the season for VanDerWilt in Motown this season. Eric Knutson was able to lead laps eight and nine before VanDerWilt regained it on lap ten. Knutson settled for second, Bradly Graham was third, Brett Maasdam in fourth and Logan Andrews in fifth.

James Haring led the first three laps of the Hy-Vee of Marshalltown IMCA Sport Compacts 15 lap feature event before Kolby Sabin was able take the top spot away. Sabin looked to be heading on to take the feature win but Devin Jones worked his way from seventh. Jones applied pressure on Sabin as they encountered lap traffic, Jones was able to make the move and take the top spot away on lap 14. Jones took the feature win ahead of Sabin, James Haring, Stephen Randall and Korey Lana.

Final feature of the night was the 15 lap Outlaw 2 Man Cruiser feature event. Corey VanDerWilt and Brett Maasdam nicknamed Thunder and Lightening jumped out to the race lead. VanDerWilt / Maasdam was never really challenged until a lap car slowed them up allowing the father and son team of Jerome and Preston Kline was able to catch. VanDerWilt and Maasdam went on to take the feature win. Kline / Kline was second, Kerry Davis / Corey Davis was third, Ray Hill / Austin Schuring was fourth and Jacob Lehman / Laverne Lehman was fifth.

Shute, Kaplan, Anderson, Graham Among Winners on Larry Wollam Season Championship Night

Its hard to believe the 2023 racing season at the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway wrapped up track points already as the North 3rd Avenue Dairy Queen Larry Wollam Season Championships along with Iowa Seamless Gutters took place on Friday. The night is in honor of Larry Wollam and all of his contributions to the speedway and Larry lived by a saying.

THE LARRY WOLLAM VIEW OF LIFE--

If you think you're beaten, you are,
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you'd like to win, but think you can't,
It's almost a cinch that you won't.

If you think you'll lose, you're lost.
For out in the world we find
Success begins with a fellow's will,
It's all in the state of mind.

If you think you're outclassed, you are,
You've got to think high to rise.
You've got to be sure of yourself,
Before you can win the prize.

Life's battles don't always go,
To the strongest or fastest man.
But sooner or later the person who wins,
Is the person who thinks he can.

One hundred-one cars signed in the pit gate to tame the high banks of the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway. There was great racing action all night long, several exciting and eventful finishes. The final twin checkers was displayed at 10:35pm.

First feature of the night was the Hy-Vee of Marshalltown IMCA Sport Compacts 15 lap feature event. "Ricky Bobby" Mitchell Bunch worked his way by the "Wylie Coyote" John Patterson and "Crash Dummy" Larry Werner, who led the field to the green early. Bunch pulled away and a commanding lead as Kolby Sabin worked his way into second. The only race caution came out on lap ten when William Michel came to a stop on the top of turn four. Bunch held off Sabin and Blake Driscol on the restart and hung on the final five laps to claim second win in Motown. Sabin came home in second allowing him to claim the 2023 track championship. Driscol was third, Chad Larson had a strong run and came home in fourth and Patterson held off Werner for fifth.

Next up on the speedway was the only division not wrapping up track points this week, the Knight Sanitation IMCA Mod Lites for their 15 lap feature event. William Nobles led the first lap of the event before fourth place Joe Glick was able to take over the top spot. Glick was followed by Jason Masengarb and Cory Sonner but Glick held off their challenges until Masengarb was able to take the race lead on lap seven. Glick regained the lead on lap nine but now it became a five car battle up front as Jon Padilla and Josh May joined the fun. Glick remained strong and went on to take the feature win. Masengarb, Padilla, May and Sonner round out the top five. May heads into the Mod Lites Season Championship night next week with a 36 point advantage over Padilla, meaning once he takes the green next week he clinches the track title.

Big 8 Tyre Center "Wild Thing" IMCA Hobby Stocks 20 lap feature event saw Ben Newhouse wrestle the race lead early from fellow front row starter Tucker Richardson. Newhouse was able to hold off Richardson until the caution came out on lap four when Mike House spun in turn two and then again on the restart for debris on the front stretch. Newhouse held off Richardson and "Squishy" Solomon Bennett on the restart but slipped up on lap seven allowing Richardson to take over the top spot. Richardson then had to contend with ninth place starter Bradly Graham before a caution came out on lap 12 when House spun in turn two. Graham was able to get by Richardson on lap sixteen and go on claim is first victory in Motown this season. Eleventh place starter Eric Knutson came home in second, Richardson fell back to third. Fourteenth place starter Sam West was able grab fourth as a few cars got together exiting turn four. Fifth went to twenty-fourth place starter "Flyin' Fireman" Calvin Dhondt. 2023 Track Championship goes to the "Lynnville Lightening" Corey VanDerWilt.

Zach Hovell led the first two laps of the Rugged Radios IMCA Sport Mods 20 lap feature event before fan favorite Jenae Gustin was able to take the top spot away. Gustin pulled away and appeared to be heading on to the easy win meanwhile Logan Anderson, Brayton Carter, Hovell and Tony Olson battled behind her. The caution came out though on lap 13 for debris in turn four along with Brandon Jacoby and Kenser Ellis getting together in turn two. Gustin held off Anderson and Carter on the restart but the caution came out again on lap eighteen for Ellis in turn four. On this restart, Carter would flirt with the skirt of Gustin's car exiting turn two allowing their bumpers to get hooked briefly, that allowed Anderson to get by both of them. Anderson went on to claim the feature win ahead of sixteenth place starter Matt Avila, Carter, Gustin and Peterson. Kyle Olson spun went a lap down was able to get back on the lead lap following a caution allowing him to work back through the field for an eighth place finish, that was just enough to take the 2023 track championship.

Dave Atcher grabbed the lead early in the Drury Automotive and Truck Repair "Class Too Tough Too Tame" IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature event after out wrestling Austin Schrage. Tyler Pickett and Jeff Wollam battled for second behind Atcher. The caution came out on lap five when Kaden Reynolds spun in turns three and four with a broken front end. Atcher held off Pickett and Wollam on the restart but this is where it started to get really hot and heavy. There was good four and five wide battles behind Atcher. Tenth place starter Austin Kaplan found a line nobody dared to run and he worked his way into the top spot using the highside on lap nine. Kaplan started to pull away until the caution came out on lap 18 when Kylie Rawlins spun in turn two. After the initial restart was called back because Kaplan tried to go too early, he was able to get a great restart anyways and hang on to take his third win in Motown this season. Meyer came home in second and claiming the 2023 track championship. Pickett came home third, Michael Jaennette was fourth and Scott Rice was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the Tire Demon by Love Tap Fabrication IMCA Modifieds 25 lap feature event. It was originally suppose to be a 20 lap feature but after challenge was purposed to Todd Shute and Joel Rust, Rust accepted the challenge and went to the back for extra money. The caution came out before a lap was scored when Ethan Robey, Paul Nagle and Bret Ramsey spun in turn two but all three managed to get going as the caution came out. Dustin Kroening grabbed the race lead early but just after lap one scored the caution came out when Rust spun in turn four. Kroening held off Ronn Lauritzen and Todd Shute on the restart. Kroening worked the top side as Shute worked the bottom, Shute was able to take the top spot away on lap eight. Shute was able to remained strong allowing him to go on and claim his fourth win of the season and clinch the 2023 track title by 4 points over Rust. Tripp Gaylord finished second, Rust made a show and worked his way to finish third, Lauritzen was fourth and Maguire DeJong was fifth.

Berry Lethals to P1P Challenge and Watermelon Classic Victories in Boone

Every year on my birthday, I go to the races and this year was no different after going through my options, I decided to make the trip over to Iowa's Action Track and the Boone Speedway for the 9th Annual P1P Modified Challenge and the Watermelon Classic presented by D&E Outdoor Services. It was hard for me to believe looking in my records, the last time I was at Boone Speedway was May 28th so this was my first trip in over two months.

The racing was fantastic all night and it was a great way to spend my birthday. I brought the camera and took pictures and posted them on the the Trackside Report by Foxman Facebook Page. Racing action wrapped up around 10:50pm and I was able to make it back home around midnight.

A total of one hundred-sixty eight cars checked in for the Annual Watermelon Classic presented by D&E Outdoor Services including 38 IMCA Modifieds for the 9th Annual P1P Modified Challenge.

Izac Mallicoat and Tom Berry Jr led the field to green in the fifteen lap 9th Annual P1P Modified Challenge race. Tom Berry Jr jumped out to the race lead and never looked back despite challenges from Mallicoat, Cory Wray and David Stremme. Berry claim the $1,000 to win prize ahead of Stremme, Cory Sauerman, Wray and Mallicoat.

First regular feature of the night was the Carquest Auto, Truck & Farm IMCA Mod Lites 15 lap feature event. Joe Glick grabbed the race lead early. Glick held off Cory Sonner and Randy Bryan before looking to be going on the feature win. Tenth place starter Josh May worked his way through the field and up to second by lap ten. May was able to take the top spot away from Glick on lap 12 and it was May going on to take the feature win. Glick finished second, Austin Gray came home third, Bryan in fourth and Sonner in fifth.

Before a single lap was completed in the Elmquist Towing IMCA Sport Mods 18 lap feature event, the caution came out when Nate Friesen spun off the top of turn one. When the race got started, it was Jessiah Taylor grabbing the top spot with Curtis Veber and Matt Avila applying pressure. Veber would grab the race lead away just before a caution on lap five when Camdan Vincent and Billy Dyer got together in turn two. Veber held on to take the feature win ahead over Avila, Cory Pestotnik, tenth place starter Dustin Lynch and Dusty Masolini.

Jonathan Logue out dueled Jay Schmidt for the early lead in the Boone Moose Lodge 104 IMCA Stock Cars 25 lap feature event. The caution came out on lap two when Miciah Hidlebaugh spun Jake Sachau in turn four, then on the restart for debris on the front stretch. Logue held off Schmidt and Scott Olson on the restart but the caution came out again on lap four when Nick Roberts spun in turn three. The final caution came out on lap five when Cody Gustoff and Kevin Opehim got together on the front stretch.  Logue was determine to remain out front but Schmidt ran a different lane and able to take the top spot away on lap nine. Schmidt led until David Smith worked his way up to take the top spot away on lap 18. Smith went on to take the feature win. Schmidt came home second, Logue was third, Michael Jaennette in fourth and Olson in fifth.

Cory Sauerman led the first five laps of the D&E Outdoor Services IMCA Modifieds 25 lap feature event before David Stremme took the top spot away on lap six. Stremme started to pull away until Tom Berry Jr worked his way into second and chase down Stremme. The caution on lap 21 when Paul Nagle spun in turn three helped Berry to catch Stremme. Berry challenged Stremme for the race lead and tried to make the pass a lap earlier but came up short until Berry was able to take the top spot away on lap 24. Berry takes the feature win worth $1,000 ahead of Lethal Chassis Builder David Stremme. Jeremy Mills moved from eighteenth to finish third, sixteenth place starter Tim Ward was fourth and Cory Sauerman was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the Pickett Salvage IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event. "Squishy" Solomon Bennett was able to grab the early race lead. The first caution came out on lap four when Eric Knutson spun in turn two. Bennett led until "The Burglar" Andrew Burg was able to take the top spot away on lap eight. The final caution came out on lap ten when Mike Smith was spun by Zach Hemmingsen in turn two. Burg went on to take the feature win. John Watson, Bennett, Rusty Bates and Seth Janssen rounded out the top five.

Rust, Jaennette, Carter, Knutson and Masengarb Take Victories on BHE Night in Motown

It was another beautiful Friday night for racing on the high banks of the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway. Friday night was BHE Night at the Races featuring $1,000 to win for the IMCA Sport Mods Before the Creek. Next week our sister track, 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, Wisconsin hosts the Captain of the Creek Special Tuesday and Wednesday night next week.

Ninety-three cars signed in on Friday. The racing action started at 7:30p and was hot and heavy all night and there was a fantastic lightning show of the showers over an hour away until the final checkered flag was displayed at 9:48pm.

First feature of the night was the Rugged Radios IMCA Sport Mods 20 lap feature event for $1,000 to win. Jarett Franzen and Chris Burke led the field to green and it was Franzen grabbing the top spot early. Franzen was followed by Sam Wieben, Wieben took the top spot away on lap three. Wieben held on to the race lead until the cautions came out on lap 12. First caution was for Curt Smeins and Shane Paris in turn two and then on the following restart for debris in turn four. Curtis VanDerWal was able to grab the top spot away on the restart with Wieben and Brayton Carter battling out for second. The caution came out again on lap 14 when Ryan King and Jessiah Taylor got hooked together on the front stretch. Carter was able to power by VanDerWal for the race lead on lap 15 just prior to a caution coming out for Zach Hovell, Corey Van Zante and Nate Friesen in turn four. Carter held off Wieben and VanDerWal on the restart and went on to lead the final five laps to claim the victory, his sixth win at Motown in 2023. Tenth place starter Travis Peterson worked his way by Wieben and VanDerWal for second. Wieben was third, VanDerWal was fourth and Logan Anderson rounded out the top five.

Jason Masengarb led all 15 laps in the Knight Sanitation IMCA Mod Lites feature event. Masengarb had to fend off early challenges from RJ Gonzales and then again late in the race from Gonzales and Jon Padilla. Gonzales held on to take second, Padilla was third, Josh May was fourth and Cory Sonner was fifth.

Next up was the "Class Too Tough Too Tame" IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature event presented by Drury Automotive and Truck Repair. Dave Atcher jumped out to the race lead fending off Scott Rice early. Atcher continued to lead as the battle behind was heating up Rice, Troy Jerovetz, Michael Jaennette, Jeff Wollam and Steve Meyer battled. The first caution came out on lap nine for Austin Kaplan spinning in turn four. Atcher held off Rice and Jannette on the restart, he was determined to get his first win of the season but the caution came out again on lap 11 when Micheal Smith spun in turn two. Atcher continued to lead until coming to complete lap 16 when Jaennette and Atcher made contact in turn four. Atcher needed assitantance from the wrecker while Jaennette inherited the lead. Jaennette held off Wollam and Meyer on the restart. Jaennette went on to take his first win in Motown. Wollam came home second, Todd Reitzler was third, Kaplan came back after spinning on lap nine to finish fourth and Rice was fifth.

Paul Nagle grab the race lead early in the Tire Demon by Love Tap IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event but just after a lap was scored the caution came out when David Stremme spins in turn two forcing a chain reaction Jonathan Mawhinney, Bret Ramsey and Rod Clement all got together. Nagle got a great restart but once again the caution came out on lap three when Jeremy Queener in turn four. Nagle remained strong out front and he led until "Toddzilla" Todd Shute reeled down Nagle and took the top spot away on lap 12. Shute led until just after the completion of lap 15 when he appeared to have a tire and slowed. That gave the lead back over to Nagle but it was Joel Rust flexing his muscles and it was Rust taking over the top spot. The caution came out one more time on lap 18 for debris in turn four. Rust held on to claim his fourth win of the season in Motown and trim Shute's point lead down to just 2 points heading into Championship Night. Maguire DeJong, Nagle, Stremme and Ronn Lauritzen rounded out the top five.

Final feature of the night was the Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Hobby Stocks 20 lap feature event. Ben Newhouse got a great start but that was all wiped away as the caution came out when Jeremiah Andrews and Tyler Carey got together off of turn two, Andrews ended up on the Construct dirt hill off the back stretch. Newhouse got a great restart and led the first lap but a slight bobble allowed "Squishy" Solomon Bennett to take the top spot away on lap two. The caution came out shortly after for debris in turn three. Bennett looked to be going on to take the win but Eric Knutson was able to use a lane that nobody else was running and took the top spot away on lap 13. Knutson held on to take his third win of the season. Bennett, Calvin Dhondt, John Watson and Corey VanDerWilt round out the top five finish.

Kay Farms His Way to Victory in the Dale DeFrance Memorial in Motown

Second time was the charm for the 6th Annual Dale DeFrance Memorial presented by Vinyl Cup Records. In the history of this event, only two years have ever got the first one in. The speedway officials set back when they scheduled this event for Friday August 4th being the rain date unfortunately mother nature made sure that had to come in to play.

One Hundred seventy cars signed in to tame the high banked quarter mile for the Dale DeFrance Memorial. The night also had Drury Automotive & Truck Repair and Knight Sanitation as Night sponsors. Every driver saw extra money in their envelopes and extra certificates thanks to the hard work of Judy (DeFrance) Gustin, Darrel DeFrance, Kathy Link, Mike O'Lear and Christopher Calvert. The pictures below was the list of all the sponsors that helped make this event amazing.

The racing action did not disappoint as they were all over the racing surface and sometimes found their way off the surface. The racing action even got halted for around 30 minutes because the lights went off around the racing track forcing speedway officials to halt the racing action. Their was even a brief shower of rain, that did not spoil the fun. The final checkered flag fell just before 12:50a.

First feature of the night was the Rugged Radios IMCA Sport Mods 24 lap feature event. Travis Peterson led the opening lap after out dueling Carter VanDenBerg. Peterson's lead was short lived as VanDenBerg took the top spot away on lap two. VanDenBerg held off Peterson and Logan Anderson, while appearing to head on to the win. "Speedy Bray" Brayton Carter worked his way through the field and use a line to his liking to chase down VanDenBerg with five to go, Carter took the race lead away. Carter went on to claim victory and the $1,044 top prize in the feature that went caution free. VanDenBerg was second, Peterson came home in third, twentieth place starter Ben Chapman came home in fourth and Anderson was fifth.

Next up was the Tire Demon by Love Tap IMCA Modifieds 34 lap feature event. "The Gasman" Cayden Carter jumped out to the race lead in Maguire DeJong's hot rod and pulled away only to see the caution come out on lap five for Jacob Murray in turn two. Carter got a great restart and pulled away again until the caution came out on lap ten for Joel Rust in turn two. Carter was determined not to be denied as he got another great restart but the caution came out on lap 14 when Richie Gustin Jr slid off the top of turn two. Carter got another great restart and never looked back going on to take the feature win worth $3,044. Tenth place starter Tom Berry Jr grabbed second on lap nine and ran there the rest of the way. Tripp Gaylord was third, sixteenth place starter Jacob Hobscheidt was fourth and twelfth place starter Tim Ward was fifth.

It was time for the Haulin' with Hoker Trucking SLMR Late Models 44 lap feature event, "Chargin' Charlie" Charlie McKenna and hometown favorite "Ironman" Darrel DeFrance led the field to the green flag. "Flyin Farmer" Justin Kay got by both of them exiting turn two but before the first lap was scored in the books completely the caution came out for Denny Eckrich in turn four. That caution did not stop Kay as on the restart, he did it again and jumped out to the race lead. Kay fend of McKenna before pulling away. The caution came out again on lap eight when "AK" Andrew Kosiski spun in turn two. Kay got a restart and pulled away, as Kay was encountering heavy lap traffic allowing McKenna, Bill Leighton Jr and Luke Goedert to chase him down, the caution came out for Jesse Sobbing going off the top of turn two. That allowed Kay to reset but he had to fend off McKenna and Leighton on the restart. The caution came out one final time on lap 31 when Denny Eckrich slowed on the front stretch. Kay went on to take the feature win worth $4,644. McKenna, fifteenth place starter Jason Rauen, tenth place starter Andy Eckrich and twelfth place starter Jeff "Bones" Larson rounded out the top five. Jeff Tharp, twentieth place starter Brian Harris, Goedert, eigteenth place starter Jeff Aikey and DeFrance was sixth through tenth respectively.

Kaden Reynolds jumped out the race lead early in the "Class Too Tough Too Tame",  Drury Automotive & Truck Repair IMCA Stock Cars 24 lap feature event but it was the "Chelsea Charger" Damon Murty flexing strong. Murty took the top spot away on lap five. Murty was able to lead the remaining nineteen laps to go on and take the feature win worth $1,444.
