Cooney Wins Again on PBM Performance Products Night

When i got asked 2 weeks to go to come over and fill in for Track Announcer Johnnie Tharp at the Stuart Speedway i had no idea it would turn out to be a wild night at the races but i was happy to be asked and welcome by the entire staff at the Stuart Speedway.

It was PBM Performance Products "The Best Kept Secret in the Winner's Circle" Night at the Races which was night #4 for the Karl Chevrolet IMCA Late Models Series and the MADCRA Mod Lites would make their first appearance of the season at the Speedway.

First feature was the 25 lap MADCRA Mod Lite feature and it was Cory Sonner taking the early lead before Josh May from nearby DeSoto taking the lead on lap 4. May would then see the caution come out on lap 5 for Shane Hunter but that wouldn't bother him as he would begin to pull away until he caught up to lap traffic which would allow Mike Morrill catch up. May would then see the yellow fly again on lap 24 setting up a green-white-checkered, he would hold off any challenges from Morrill to take the win. Sonner was 3rd, Joel Huggins was 4th and  Randy Bryan was 5th.

The IMCA Sport Compacts feature would see Jordan Peters lead from start to finish. Scott Brown was 2nd, Alex Davis was 3rd, Jesse Bramer was 4th and Nash Coe was 5th.

In the IMCA SportMods 15 lap feature it was Matt Pinegar leading the first lap but it was Joe Simbro taking the lead on lap 2. Simbro would lead until lap 8 when Nick Roberts would get on by and take the lea. Shortly after that the caution would come out when Simbro would spin around in turn 2 , the caution again would fly on the restart when Rick Ringgenberg would find his ride up on the wall in turn 1. Another lap would be completed when the caution came out for Tom Burke and Simbro in turn 4. Roberts than would pull away and take the win with Clint Luellen, David Schlicht, Michael Pruitt and Cole Ferguson rounding out the top 5.

IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature would see the caution fly before 1 lap was completed when the pole sitter Ben Walding would go around in turn 4 forcing a complete restart. Scott Bailey would take the lead after inheriting the pole as he would go on to lead lap 1 before Jeff Anderson would get caught up on the wall and a flat tire in turn 1. Bailey wouldn't let it bother him despite several drivers try to find away by including Brian Blessington. Then Brian Blessington would go around in turn 4 bring out the yellow on lap 8.  Bailey would again remain out front and then be chased down by Jeremy Gettler, Gettler would take the lead on lap 13. A lap later the caution would come out again for Anderson this time in turn 2 and then the caution would come out on lap 17 for Walding, Michael Walrod and Keith Miner getting together in turn 2. Gettler would hold off any late race challenges from Joldersma to take the win. Jamie Schirm, Derrick Rohe nad Bryan Snell would round out the top 5.

"Fast Eddie" Seibert would lead the first lap in the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature before Scott Bash would get by for the lead on lap 2. Bash looked to be going on to the win but then the caution would come out for Kent Croskey and Ron Bash getting together in turn 2 on lap 10. On the restart, Bash would lose the lead to Rex Parkison but Parkison lead was short lived as he was chase down by Bash, Jimmy Gustin and Josh Gilman. Gustin would get take the lead away on lap 19 and hold off Gilman for the win. Parkison was 3rd, Scott Bash was 4th and Shay Woods was 5th.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks feature would also see the yellow come out before a lpa was in the book when Bobby Smith would go around in turn 2. When the race got going it was exciting battle up from however it was Lee Farmer taking the lead. Farmer would lead the first 8 laps before Jamie Songer would get by and take the lead, Farmer wouldn't give up as he would come back and take the lead on lap 13. Then the final race caution came out for Ed Mahlstedt in turn 2. This would set up for quite a finish as Farmer would lead lap 14 but it was Brandon Pruitt taking the win by a bumper at the line to take the win and moving Farmer to 2nd. John Watson was 3rd, Songer was 4th and Randy Anderson was 5th.

Scott Fitzpatrick would lead the first 3 laps in the IMCA Late Models feature before "The Iron Man" Darrel DeFrance would take the lead on lap 4 and despite a race caution on lap 8 it looked like DeFrance was going to take the win but then the caution came out on lap 14 for Fitzpatrick and DeFrance would now have to deal with Todd Cooney. DeFrance would hold him off but then the caution would fly on lap 15 for Randy Faux and Randy Foote getting together in turn 4. On this restart it was Cooney making the move and pass on DeFrance to take the lead. Cooney would go on and take win number 4 at Stuart, DeFrance was 2nd, Chad Cooney was 3rd, Curt Schroeder was 4th and Craig Jacobs was 5th.

The final feature of the night was the 6 Cylinder Front Wheel Drive feature and it was Scott Brown leading the first 2 laps before Andy Forcht would get by. For Forcht that would be the 5th straight win at Stuart and Brown would finish 2nd. Jordan Peters, Jason Kroeger and Jesse Bramer would finish out the top 5.

Shelton, Fosdyck, Tedrow, Cale and Harward Win on Spilman Auto Parts Night at Bloomfield

Temperatures were finally cooler but the racing action was very heated and exciting at the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway on Spilman Auto Parts Inc. of Bloomfield Night at the Races. Kirkland Auto of Centerville would also sponsor the JR Fan Club for the night.

First feature of the night was the Mike's Tire and Alignment of Ottumwa SportMods 16 lap feature. Jim Walker would lead the first 4 laps before Mark Mundell would make the move and take the top spot away on lap 5. Mundell would then see 8th place starter "The Tire Man" Mike Shelton work his way up and make the pass for the lead on lap 9 when Mundell would get slowed by a lap car. Shelton would start pulling away until the only race caution would come out on lap 12 that bunch the field back up but Shelton wouldn't let it bother him as he would go on and take the win. Scott VanBusKirk would move up 12 spots from his 14th place starting position to finish 2nd. Mundell would fall back to 3rd, Brandon Dale was 4th and Carter VanDenBerg was 5th.

In the Kirkland Auto of Centerville Hobby Stock 15 lap feature there would be 2 yellows before a lap was completed, the first one would be when Pole Sitter "The Rockstar" Rocky Fosdyck would lose the handle in the middle of turns 1 and 2 and would get a few other cars involved, the yellow would fly again for debris in turn 2 on the restart. When the race finally got going it was Bobby Greene taking the early lead and he would begin to pull away until a red flag came out as the medical staff was needed in the pit area. After about 20 minutes it was back to racing and it would be Mike Hughes from Oskaloosa taking the lead. Hughes lead would be short lived as Fosdyck worked his way back up after going to the tail for the early caution, Fosdyck would make the move to take the lead on lap 9. Fosdyck would go on and take the win with a race car that had no right side door. Dustin Griffiths was 2nd, Hughes was 3rd, Greene was 4th and Danny Thrasher wsa 5th.

The Karr Collison Center of Bloomfield Modifieds 12 lap feature would see  Tyler Cale leading from start to finish, in the feature that would go green-to-checkered. Tyler "Fishstick" VandeKamp was 2nd, "Hollywood" Brandon Dale was 3rd, Lance Schlicher was 4th and Hugh Eddy was 5th.

Up next was the Kollision Korner of Bloomfield Sport Compacts 12 lap feature and it was William Michel leading the first 2 laps before Hometown Boy Anthony Cassat would make the pass for the lead on lap 3. Cassat would be passed by "Old Man" Kevin Kirkpatrick on lap 5 and it appeared Kirkpatrick started to pull away but then the yellow would come ouf when Kevin Garrett would go around in turn 2. Kirkpatrick would continue to lead until lap 11 when Travis Tedrow would make the pass. Tedrow would go on and take the win his 2nd of season at Bloomfield, 2nd of the week as he pick up the win last sunday at the Great Jones County Fair and 4th win overall on the year. Kevin Kirkpatrick, Cassat, Kassidy Kirkpatrick and Tim Bevins would round out the top 5.

Taylor Automotive Stock Car 17 lap feature would be an exciting one as it was Nick Batterson leading the first lap but he would have to deal with Derrick Agee, Gary and Mike Harward for the lead. Batterson would lose the lead to Gary "The Snail" Harward on lap 3. Harward would start to pull away until late when Jason Cook would try to chase him down but run out of time. Harward would take the win, his 1st of the season. Cook, Mike Harward, Todd Reitzler and Agee would complete out the top 5.

The final race of the night was the Hobby Stock Gambler Race and off the competitors lead at least 1 lap but in the end there was exciting finish as Dustin Griffiths would make the move and beat Rocky Fosdyck by a bumper at the line. Close and Exciting Finishes On Johnny Ray's Night in Motown

Finally with a little break in the weather with some temperatures about 20 degrees cooler than it was the past few weeks it definitely brought the best out as there would be close and exciting finishes in all the features.

The night also would see the kids replacing horsepower with peddle power as the annual kid races that got rescheduled from earlier in the season and at the end of the night it was the ever so popular fan favorite Spectator Eliminator Races.

Duayne Herb would lead the first 3 laps before Merv Chandler would find away around Herb to take the lead. Herb wouldn’t give up as he would continue to battle with Chandler but Chandler would hold off Herb and take win number 11 on Friday Nights at Marshalltown. Herb was 2nd and John Gill was unable to make the call for the feature.

O’Reilly Auto Parts Mod Lites feature would see Adam Larson from Ames take the early lead. Larson would hold on to the top spot until lap 6 when Josh May would get by for the lead. May would lead but his lead would be short lived as he would have a little trouble with a lap car and then have some mechanical issue forcing him to a stop in turn 4 on lap 10. That would give the lead back to Larson but it was Morrill making the pass for the lead on lap 12. Larson wouldn’t give up and would race side-by-side with Morrill but Morrill would take the win, his 5th of the season on Friday Nights and Larson would settle for 2nd. Mike Kennedy, Joel Huggins and Jeff Stensland rounded out the top 5.

The Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA SportMods saw Gatlin Leytham take the early lead but on lap 3 it was 14 year old Sam Wieben taking the lead away. Then a lap later the only race caution would fly for Shawn Albers coming to a stop on the back stretch. On the restart, Wieben would have Leytham, Jared VanDeest, Racer Hulin and Travis Peterson right behind him. Wieben would hold on to the lead until 9th place starter Racer Hulin would make the move on the outside to take lead away. Hulin would go on take his 3rd win of the season at Marshalltown. Jake Strayer would end up 2nd, Wieben was 3rd, Scott Davis was 4th and Joel Rust was 5th.

In Toby K’s Hideaway IMCA Hobby Stocks feature it was Matt Hudspeth taking the lead and it appeared it was going to be his race to lose until a few laps to go when Point Leader Scott Pippert, who started 12th had worked his way up to 2nd and began to battle for the lead. Pippert would fail until coming off turn 4 to the checkered as he would win at the line over Hudspeth, for Pippert it was win number 4 on Friday Nights. Finishing behind Pippert and Hudspeth was Brice Udelhoven, Eric Knutson and Eugene Nicklas.

The Mike’s Hard Lemonade IMCA Stock Cars would see some fantastic racing as they would go 3 and 4 wide in the early going once again. Jay Schmidt would lead the first few laps before it was Steve Meyer taking over the lead on lap 4. Meyer would cruise to the victory despite a race caution on lap 9. For Meyer it was win number 1 of the season at Marshalltown. Trent Murphy, Todd Reitzler, Tracy Gienger and Jay Schmidt completed out the top 5.

The final feature of the night was Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel IMCA Modifieds feature saw the original start called back but once the racing got going they were going 3 and 4 wide in the early going. Zack Rawlins would take the early lead and then the 2nd caution would come out for a couple cars going around on the front stretch. Rawlins wouldn’t let it bother him however Rawlins would get passed by Josh Truman. Truman would only lead 2 laps as Jimmy Gustin would get by on lap 8. Gustin would begin to pull away but then late in the race, Luke Wanninger would chase down Gustin and battle for the lead. Wanninger would make the pass on lap 18 and then the final race caution setting up a green-white-checkered finish. Wanninger would hold off the challenges from Gustin to take win number 4 of the season. Gustin would also get credit for the win which would be win number 5 at Marshalltown. Rawlins would finish 3rd, Truman was 4th and Scott Simatovich was 5th.

In the Spectator Eliminators it was Todd Schurr driving a 1985 Blue Chevrolet Corvette to the win over Speedway Promoter Toby Kruse, who replaced the 1929 Model A Rust driven by Brad Roorda which encounters some mechanical trouble.

Next Friday Night will start the month of August off as it will be Old Timers Lounge Night at the Races and also we will have a Sport Mod King of the Hill. Remember the speedway features IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Hobby Stocks, Mod Lites and IMCA Sport Compacts. Hot Laps at 7 pm and Racing to Follow at 7:30 pm.

DeFrance Takes Win On a Wild Thursday Night Thunder

The plan as always is too make the trip to the annual Hamilton County Fair and the Thursday Night Thunder Special. As i arrived to the track i quickly noticed the pit area was almost full and the track was finishing up track prep. There was 132 cars signed in the pit area to do battle on the historic half mile The Hamilton County Speedway.

First feature of the night was the Oberhelman Trucking IMCA Sport Compacts feature sponsored by Trampel Farms and it before a lap was completed Cory Wirt would find his world going upside as he wouls roll in turn 1 and 2 but be okay, Sheldon Richardson would also receive some damage but continue. When the race got going it was Storm Lake's Cory Flanigan taking the lead and going on to taking the win despite several challenges from Adam Strunk, David Moorman and Mike Nehring. Moorman would take 2nd, Nehring was 3rd, Adam Strunk was 4th and Jordan Prehn was 5th.

The Casady Brothers Equipment IMCA Hobby Stocks feature sponsored by Tile Pros saw Craig Graham take the lead on lap 1 but then just after the completion of 1 lap the caution would come out for Michael Henely un turn 4 and Devin Smith would encounter a flat tire. On the restart, Graham would be passed by Corey Roe. Roe would continue to lead through the next race caution on lap 4 when Josh Niemand came to a stop in turn 2. Andy Boeckman would work his way up and would make the pass for the lead on lap 8. With just a few laps to go the caution would come out when Cory Gansen and Dustin Griffiths would get together in turn 1 but Boeckman wouldn't let it bother him as he would go on and take the win. Roe would finish 2nd, Brandon Pruitt worked his way up to 3rd, Graham was 4th and Austin Wolfgram was 5th.

Chalfant Plumbing Stock Cars 18 lap feature sponsored by Bryan Denekas and George White Chevrolet would be a very wild and crazy feature from start to finish. John Cambell would lead lap 1 but it was the "Racing Electrician" Jason Vansickel taking the lead on lap 2. Vansickel would lead it through every caution. The first race caution came out on lap 5 when Bryce Carey came to a stop in turn 2 and then a lap later the caution would fly for Shane Curry and Dennis Plain in turn 1. The race caution would come out on lap 9 for Jeff Deal in turn 1. The last 3 cautions would come with 4 and 5 laps to go. The first on lap 14 for Cody Frerichs coming to a stop in turn 2 and then on the restart for Jared Dirks, Jeff Deal, Scott Bloemke and Dennis Plain in turn 1. On the restart a great battle would begin behind Vansickel and just after the 15th lap was completed Reid Keller would be on the bottom side and Wayne Crimmins would try to go low but hit the giant track tire and then almost roll his car meanwhile also coming to stop in turn 1 was Bloemke, Plain, Pat Neely, Laura Curry, Frerichs, Ryan Leeman, Vince Loewen, Jim Mitchell all in turn 1. That was just half of the fireworks on lap 15 as Dennis Plain was able to drive away but came all the way around to the starters stand stop his car climbed out and got into an argument with Chief Starter Dave Bergeson while Bergeson was trying to explain something to Plain, Plain then would hit Bergeson. Plain was then told to leave and was Escorted out by Hamilton County Sherriffs Office. Meanwhile Vansickel would go on and take the win and mention that he was in the hospital the 3 days prior to the race night wasn't sure if he was going to be racing.  Lance Deal, Campbell, Reid Keller and Adam Silvey rounded out the top 5.

In the Conley Trucking IMCA SportMods feature sponsored by Corner Acres it would also see a yellow flag before the completion of lap 1 when Bryan Weyer would have some trouble in turn 1. When the race got going it was "Smokin" Joe McBirnie leading lap 1 but just after the completion of lap 1 the caution would wave for Brandon Toffee in turn 2. On this restart, McBirinie would be passed by Joel Rust. The next cautions would come out on lap 15 and 17, first caution on lap 15 for Shawn Albers in turn 1 then on lap 17 for Ben Kravs, Brandon Leeman, Ben Kates, Matt Northrop and Bob Sutherland would get together and then on the restart it was Scott Davis and Aaron Benson get together but Davis would continue to move so wouldn't be penalized. Those cautions on lap 17 would force a green-white-checkered and it was Rust holding off everybody to take the win meanwhile Carter Vandenberg would spin un turn 2. Tyler Droste was 2nd, Racer Hulin was 3rd, McBirinie was 4th and "Rock Star" Rocky Caudle was 5th.

The George White Chevrolet IMCA Modifieds feature sponsored by Titan Machinery would see the caution fly when Greg Elliott went for a spin in turn 2. When the race got going it was Chris Abelson from Sioux City taking the lead. The caution would again come out on lap 2 for Devon Havlik, Beau Kaplan, Cayden Carter and Shane DeMey in turn 1. Abelson would still continue to lead through the cautions on lap 9, 10 and 14. First caution on lap 9 for David Brown in turn 1, Kyle Brown in turn 2 on lap 10 and then Greg Elliott in turn 2 on lap 14. Abelson would have to deal with "Terminator" Mark Elliott, Abelson and Mark Elliott would race side by side and it was Elliott making the pass on the outside to take the win with Abelson finishing 2nd. Jacob Murray, Chris Horn and Tyler Prochaska would round out the top 5.

The final feautre of the night was the IMCA Late Models feature sponsored by Wmtel.net saw 2 late model veterans on the front row and it was "Iron Man" Darrel DeFrance jumping out to the lead. The first race caution came out on lap 4 when Ryan Griffith would come to a stop in turn 2. The next caution came out on lap 15 when Todd Cooney would come to a rest on the backstretch. The final caution came out for Greg Kastli coming to a rest in turn 3. DeFrance would go on and take the win with Jeff Aikey, Jason Hahne, Ryan Griffith and Craig Jacobs in positions 2nd through 5th.

Hot and Wild Night of Racing in Vinton

After making the decision at 4:30 pm i got in my car and headed to the Benton County Speedway in Vinton for Hawaiian and Fuzzy Friends Night at the Races. The racing would prove to be hot and and heavy all night long, fans would leave the races on their toes.

The first feature of the night was IMCA Sport Compacts 12 lap feature saw caution come out before a lap as completed for debris on the frontstretch. When the race got going it was Craig Streeter taking the early lead but Nathan Chandler would work his way up and take the lead from Streeter on lap 3. Chandler would then experience some mechanical troubles on lap 5 giving the lead back over to Streeter. Streeter's lead again would be short lived as racing veteran Merv Chandler would make the pass for the lead on lap 7. It appeared as if Merv Chandler was going to take the win but the lap traffic would slow him down and would allow Steve Miedke to catch up to Chandler. On the last lap, Miedke would make the pass on Chandler coming off of turn 4 to take the win. Brett Vanous, Bill Whalen Jr. and Streeter rounded out the top 5.

In the IMCA Hobby Stock feature it was Justin Wacha taking the lead on lap 1 and then just after 1 lap was completed the red flag would come out. It appeared that Matt Brown got a little loose made contact with Adam Streeter, Streeter then slid up made light contact with Brian Happel, Streeter then made contact with Dustin Filloon before Bruce Fraser made contact with Streeter. Brown's car would end up on his side and it appeared all drivers would be okay. When the race got back going it was Happel taking the lead from Wacha because Wacha was black flagged for excessive smoke. Happel would lead but slide up the hill opening the door for Chris Luloff and Luloff would make the pass for the lead on lap 11. Happel wouldn't give up as he would try to get back by Luloff but fall short by a bumper at the line. Scott Pippert, August Bach and Doug Laughridge finished 3rd through 5th.

Up next the IMCA SportMods feature and it was John Schaefer taking the early lead but then a caution would come out on lap 3 when Russ Olson and Danny Dvorak got together in turn 4. On the restart, Schaefer would have to deal with Tom Rawlins and Curt Hilmer and it was Rawlins leading lap 4 but Hilmer would take the lead on lap 5. Despite a caution on lap 14 that forced a green-white-checkered finish it was Curt Hilmer crossing the finish line first. Rawlins was 2nd, Kyle Olson was 3rd, Mike McDonald was 4th and Schaefer was 5th.

The IMCA Stock Cars feature would see "Stormin" Norman Chesmore lead the first lap but just barely as he was in a 3 wide battle for the lead with Phil Holtz and Jay Schmidt. Holtz would grab the lead away from Chesmore on lap 2 but then the caution came out as Curtis Roster would go off the top side of turn 4. When the race resumed again it was Holtz but Holtz would have to deal with Jay Schmidt, Schmidt would make several attempts to get by Holtz but it was Holtz taking the win. Schmidt was 2nd, Jarod Weepie in Dave Stricker's car was 3rd, Jason De Shaw was 4th and Chesmore was 5th.

Final Feature of the night was the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature and before a single lap was completed the caution would come out twice. Once the racing got going it was Tony Olson leading lap 1 but then Mike Burbridge would take the lead on lap 2. The 3rd race caution came out on lap 4 for a couple of cars in turn 1. Burbridge would then have to worry about Jerry Luloff as they would get in a battle for the top spot, Luloff would take the lead on lap 10 then Burbridge would get back in the lead on lap 11. Two laps later it was Lulofff taking the lead back but then 3 more cautions ould come out on lap 14, 16 and 17. Luloff would hold off any challenges by Burbridge and Scott Hogan. Hogan would get by Burbridge for 2nd, Burbridge was 3rd, Ronn Lauritzen was 4th and Joe Docekal was 5th.

Racing will return Thursday Night at Benton County Speedway for the Benton County Fair Races featuring the IMCA Hobby Stocks, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Sport Compacts and Nostalgia Cars. Abelson Takes the Big Money at Marshalltown

With the Harris Clash the night before in Knoxville, the Marshalltown Speedway decided to throw some extra money for the Modifieds and SportMods. There was also bonus money to the winner of the Modifieds if the winner qualified for the Harris Clash feature the night before.

The racing action was fantastic all night and there was a lot of close and exciting finish. There were 8 different states and a province in Canada represented at Marshalltown on Friday Night. The states represented were Iowa, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Nebraska, Kansas, California, Missouri and Texas with Saskatchewan in Canada represented.

Duayne Herb would lead the first 2 laps before Merv Chandler would find away around Neil Nabholz for 2nd and then Herb for the lead. Chandler would lead the remaining 6 laps to take his 10th feature win on Friday Nights at Marshalltown. Herb was 2nd, Travis Losenicky was 3rd, John Gill was 4th and Neil Nabholz was 5th.

O’Reilly Auto Parts Mod Lites feature would see Joel Huggins jump to the race lead just like did one week before and it appeared Huggins was going to win but the lap traffic would slow him down and that allowed Josh May and Mike Morrill to chase him down but Morrill would be slowed just a bit which allow May to take the lead on the top side on lap 9. May would go on and lead the remaining laps to take his 5th win on Friday Nights. Morrill finished 2nd with Huggins, Randy Bryan and Jason Whitehead rounding out the top 5.

The Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA SportMods would need 4 heats and b-feature to settle the field down to 24 and after that was all completed it was time for the feature. In the feature it was Jenae Gustin leading the first lap but it was Clint Luellen getting by for the lead on lap 2. A lap later the caution would come out for Brett Lowry in turn 2 but on the restart it was Luellen continuing to lead. Another race caution would come out on lap 8 when Tom Rawlins would get together with Lowry in turn 4. Luellen wouldn’t let it bother him but on lap 13 it was Brad Iverson, driving Jason Hall’s car taking the lead away from Luellen. Iverson would go on and cross the line in first taking the win over Luellen. Tyler Frye from Kansas was 3rd, Nick Roberts was 4th and Racer Hulin 5th.

In Toby K’s Hideaway IMCA Hobby Stocks feature it was again Garrett Eilander taking the lead and it appeared Eilander was going to take the win but then 11th place starter Scott Pippert would catch up to Eilander and make the move to take the lead on lap 11. Pippert would take the 3rd win in as many weeks at Marshalltown. Eric Knutson would get by Eilander for 2nd, moving Eilander back to 3rd. Kevin Fee was 4th and Gary Pfantz was 5th.

The Mike’s Hard Lemonade IMCA Stock Cars would see some fantastic racing as they would go 3 and 4 wide in the early going. Trent Murphy would jump to the lead despite several challenges by his brother Michael Murphy and Jay Schmidt. The only race caution on lap 5 when Kevin Balmer, Damon Murty and Trevor Titus would get together in turn 2 even wouldn’t bother Trent. Trent Murphy would take his 2nd in a row. Michael Murphy, Jay Schmidt, Steve Meyer and Tracy Gienger completed out the top 5.

The final feature of the night was Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel IMCA Modifieds feature saw Chris Abelson lead the first lap before Luke Wanninger would get by on lap 2 and take the lead. Wanninger would begin to pull away meanwhile behind they were 2, 3 and 4 wide. Just as Wanninger was getting through lap traffic it appear he had some trouble as he would pull off on the last lap which set up for the exciting finish off turn 4. Abelson and Jimmy Gustin raced each other hard, Gustin would try to slide up and take the win but Abelson would sneak to the bottom and win at the line. Gustin finished close 2nd. Adam Larson was 3rd, Kyle Brown was 4th and Ricky Stephan from Nebraska was 5th.

Strickler tickled big to win $2,000 at Harris Clash

Once again i made the trek to the the famous Knoxville Raceway for the Annual Harris Clash but before i did tht i decided i would make my first ever trip over to Slideways Karting Center for a few fun races and i had a blast despite spinning myself out several times i guess that means i won't be behind the wheel anytime soon. Just as i was getting ready to leave my jeep decided it needed to take a time out i got to started again thanks to Bryan Denekas, Jim Mitchell and another guy i can't remember the name as they were there and help get it restarted.

I then headed off to the Speedway which is about 1.7 miles from Slideways for the Harris Clash and full pit area of race cars that they ran out of room to put cars but they managed and it was time to go racing on the half mile. During the heat races they used a passing points system.

First feature of the night was the IMCA SportMods 20 lap feature and it as Joel Rust from Grundy Center taking the early lead, a lead he would hold on to until lap 11 when 2009 Harris Clash Winner Matt Lettow would get by. Lettow would start to pull away and then the caution came out on lap 18 for Jason Mallicoat in turn 4. Lettow took the win, Rust finished 2nd, 2011 Winner Jesse Sobbing would end up finishing 3rd, Tyler Droste was 4th and Carter VanDenBerg was 5th.

In the IMCA Modifieds 25 lap feature it was "The Highside Tickler" Kyle Strickler from North Carolina continuing right were he left off the night before in Osky and that was on the bottom side. Strickler drove the bottom and but Jeremy Mills was up on the cushion. Strickler and Mills would battle for the lead but it would be Strickler holding on until lap 24 when Mills would get his nose out front but on the last lap Strickler would slide up the race track and block Mills to take the win. Strickler's 2nd win in iowa and 22nd win on the season. Jeremy Mills was 2nd, Shane DeMey was 3rd, Jon Snyder was 4th and Mike Van Genderen was 5th.

With Strickler's win that meant the chassis Manufacturer winner was Harris Auto Racing of Boone.

Thanks go out to Chuck Stowe, Toby Kruse, Bob Harris, Bobby Harris and the Knoxville Raceway for letting me to attend a great night of racing and thanks to the guys i mentioned earlier!

Strickler Wins Big on Night #2 of Racing During the Southern Iowa Fair

For the 2nd night in a row the Southern Iowa Speedway would see the roar of engines on KBOE Radio, Pepsi-Mountain Dew Memphis Bottling Company and Titan Machinery Night at the Southern Iowa Fair depsite temperatures getting over 100 degrees. The race fans that came out would not be surprised.

First feature of the night was the Autocrafters/Whalen Racing IMCA Sport Compacts 8 lap feature and it was again Dallas Chandler driving Bill Whalen Jr's car. Chandler would lead all 8 laps and take the 3rd win in a row. Bill Whalen Jr. finished 2nd, Merv Chandler was 3rd, John Whalen was 4th and Duayne Herb was 5th.

In the Tracy Elevator IMCA Hobby Stock feature it was Dustin Griffiths taking the lead but behind him the battle was really heating up as on lap 6, Shannon Anderson and Keving Fee would get together coming off of turn 4 and Fee's car would go on its side while driving on the wall, Fee would get it back on 4 wheels just as the yellow would come out. Fee would go to the work area and Anderson sent to the tail for questionable driving. When the race resumed it was Griffiths still continuing to lead it and Mike Hughes would get to 2nd until Anderson would take the 2nd spot on lap 13 but just as Anderson got to the start line he would have a flat tire sending him to the pits. Griffiths would take his 3rd win of the season at Osky and 2nd win of the week. Hughes was 2nd, Donavon Nunnikhoven was 3rd, Danny Thrasher was 4th and Bobby Greene was 5th.

Carter's Manufacturing IMCA Stock Cars saw Nathan Wood, back in his car take the early lead but staying right there behind him was Todd Reitzler and Matt Greiner. Wood would lead the first 4 laps easily but then the caution would come out for Reitzler going off the backstretch in turn 3. On the reestart it was Wood still leading but Greiner woudl make the move on lap 6, Wood would also get passed by Damon Murty and Colt Mather as well. Greiner out front leading until the next race caution on lap 9, this time for Todd Phillips going of the backstretch. Greiner would get a great restart but it was Damon Murty going off turn 3 on lap 12. Greiner would now have to deal with Zack Vanderbeek. Vanderbeek would make the pass and take the lead and not look back. Greiner, Mather, Brad Pinkerton and Wood rounded out the top 5.

The Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds saw Kyle Strickler known as "The High Side Tickler" from Mooresville, North Carolina take the lead but then the caution would fly twice on lap 4, first for Devin Havlik spinning out on the bottom side of the front stretch and then again on the restart on the backstretch which also involved Greg Cox and Ryan Cook. Strickler still lead but then on lap 7, he would be passed by Jacob Murray. It was Murray leading until lap 12 because just as Murray came across the line, he saw his engine expire he would coast it to a rest in turn 3 forcing the caution to come out. Stickler would inherit the lead and lead the remaining 8 laps to take the win. Josh Most would try to pass Stickler on the topside because Strickler was on the bottom but failed and would settle for 2nd, Todd Shute was 3rd, Brandon Banks was 4th and Andrew Schroeder was 5th.

Final Feature of the night was the Pyramid Graphics and Sports IMCA SportMods and it was Jesse Sobbing leading from start to finish in the feature that would go green-to-checkered 15 laps. For Sobbing it was win number 7 at Osky, Brett Lowry was 2nd, Curtis Vanderwal was 3rd, Ben Kates was 4th and Eric Flander was 5th.

Next Wednesday Night the Southern Iowa Speedway will return to action as it will be Mahaska Bowl Night, Des Moines residents get in for $5 plus its Boys Scouts and Cadets Night. Hot Laps at 7 pm and Racing at 7:30 pm.
