Racing and Lightening in Brooklyn on Night 2 of Nationals

Had so much fun on Friday Night, the plan was to make the trip back down to the Brooklyn Raceway for Night 2 of the Brooklyn Nationals sponsored by Lakeside Hotel & Casino.

As many weather predictors had predicted a sunny day all day with the rain moving in late at night but they were wrong when the Iowa vs Iowa State game in Ames got delayed twice because of lightening before they were able to play in which Iowa won by one pt. After checking the rain it appeared Brooklyn was dodging the bullet so got in the car just before 5pm to arrive as they were holding hot laps.

The entire night was running smoothly but around the track, it was storming and there was great lightening show with the closest strike of lightening about 2.2 miles away. The race track only received light sprinkles during the heat races before it stopped but just after the powder puff races were completed at 10:45pm, the rain picked up cancelling the Pro-Stock Grudge Race.

Owen Carlson jumped out to the early lead in the Micro Sprints 30 lap feature event but the caution came out on lap three for Cole Elton spinning in turn one. Carlson held off Jeremy Snow on the restart and continue to lead until the next caution came out on lap 13 for Zach Nelson in turn three. Carlson still maintain the lead until the caution came out on lap 15 for Greg Dennis spinning in turn two. Snow got a great restart made the move and took the lead away from Carlson on the restart. Snow went on to take the win, Elton worked his way up to finish second, Travis Rewerts finish third, Carlson slipped back to fourth and Nelson came back to finish fifth.

Before a single lap was completed in the Front Wheel Drive 12 lap feature, the caution came out when Chad Larson and Gary Morse got together in turn two. Tyler Harring started inside row three but by the end of lap one, he was the man in command. Harring went on to take the win despite several late race challenges from Matt Pool. Tyler Harring, Danny Robinson and Larson rounded out the top five.

The Cruiser Cars 12 lap feature also started with a caution when Bruce and Danielle Kline spun in turn two. On the restart though Ray Hill and Austin Schuring  grabbed the race lead and never looked back cruising on to the easy win. Bruce and Danielle Kline finished runner ups, Jesse and Duane Zander was third, Jacob and Laverne Lehman was fourth, Brandon Hasley and Blake Stevens took fifth.

Ethan Wauters led the first five laps of the Junior Front Wheel Drive 12 lap feature event before Jordan Ford took the top spot away. Ford lead was short lived because on lap seven, he would made contact with a tire in turn one ending his night, that gave the lead back to Wauters on the restart. Wauters led until lap 10 when Dalton Sowers wrestled the lead away. Sowers went on to take the win with Wauters finishing second and Dylan Zuck finishing third.

In the Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event, Anthony Goldsberry led lap one but the caution came out just after when Morgan Kline was sitting in turn two just after a tractor tire on the topside exiting turn four was knocked on the race track by Brandon Long. On the restart, Goldsberry had Bruce Kline and Leroy Kline on his back bumper. Bruce Kline took the race lead on lap two before Goldsberry took the top spot away on lap three. The caution came out on lap five for debris on the backstretch. On lap seven, the caution came out when Bruce Klin spun in turn three after making contact with Goldsberry. Tenth place starter Brandon Long took the lead away on lap nine from Goldsberry, shortly after Goldsberry brought the yellow out when he blew a tire in turn two. Travis Fenton started ninth but on the restart, he would challenge Long for the race lead. Fenton grabbed the race lead away and went on to take the win. Long, Garrett Croy, Jacob Lehman and Leroy Kline rounded out the top five.

Micro Sprints came back out for a 15 lap Non-Winged race. Owen Carlson led the first two laps before Zach Nelson led lap three and Cole Elton led lap four. Nelson took the lead back on lap five but Elton would not got away and took the lead back on lap eight. The caution came out on lap 11 for Dakota Young spinning in turn two. Elton took the win with Nelson, Greg Dennis, Dallas Darnell, Young and Carlson rounding out the field.

Open Figure 8 feature event was up next and before lap was scored the caution came out when Josh Firkins, Payton Claybaugh and Jerrod Thompson got together in turn two. Bradly Graham took the top spot early and led all 12 laps despite a pair of cautions. Lap seven caution was for debris in turn four and Allen Scholten in turn four. Lap eight for Ted Armstrong breaking in turn four. Graham took the win with Matt Hofbauer, Firkins, Jesse Sanders and Duane Zanders finishing second through fifth.

Stock Figure 8 feature saw Jerome Kline lead lap one but Anthony Goldsberry took the top spot away on lap two and led the final 11 laps despite a pair of cautions. The first caution was for Bill Gregg breaking an rear axle in turn three on lap five and the second caution was for Josh Vandermolen spinning in turn two on lap six. When the caution came out on lap six, Josh Albertson flipped upside down in turn three, Albertson was okay but once again his night ended. Goldsberry took the win with Kline in second, Mike Vandermolen in third, Rodney Morse in fourth and Daryl Calvin in fifth.

Final regular feature of the night was the Pro-Stock Figure 8 but before a single lap was scored the caution came out when Albie Parker spun in turn two forcing a complete restart. DJ Draughn grabbed the race lead on lap one but on lap two, Draughn was spun in turn three after a little assistance from Bradly Graham. Draughn to the tail for the yellow and Graham to the tail for aggressive driving. That handed the lead over to Parker but on the restart Kyle Richardson took the lead away. Richardson and the field saw the caution come out one more on lap five when Riley Cope sitting in turn one. Richardson led the remaining laps to take the win ahead of Cameron Eichhorn, Mark Ruggles, Brad Graham and Bradly Graham.

Powder Puff Races then took to the track, Race number one was won by Whitney and Danielle Kline in a Cruiser car with Ashley Kiamas in  Open Figure 8 car. Race number two was won by Kaitlyn Schurring in Tyler Harring Front Wheel Drive Car with a mystery driver in the 9-11 Stock Figure 8 car.

Pro-Stock Figure 8 drivers had each dropped in some cash to run a winner take all grudge race but mother nature finally to cut loose dumping down rain at the track.

Thanks to Don and Shelley Wauters for letting me come down to take pictures and keep notes to write a blog recap the last two days. The first time I made a visit was last year and everytime I have made the trip down I have fun, if things work out you can bet I will try to make some appearances in 2020. To all the drivers I appreciate all the love you have given me, I enjoy covering this sport.

Night 1 of Brooklyn Nationals presented by Lakeside Hotel & Casino Recap

Marshalltown postponed the World Nationals to October 24th through 26th meaning if I wanted to go racing this week, the options was down to Brooklyn Raceway for their Nationals, Knoxville Raceway for the Late Model Knoxville Nationals, Shelby County Speedway in Harlan for the Tiny Lund Memorial. The decision was easy as Brooklyn Raceway has always welcomed me to come down take pictures and write a blog so on Friday Night I made the nearly 1 hr trip.

Brooklyn Raceway was hosting the Fall Nationals sponsored by Lakeside Hotel & Casino and 110 entries checked in to tame the circle  and figure 8 tracks. The Mechanics also took to the track after the features in all divisions were completed in the Mechanic Races.

First feature of the night was the Micro Sprints feature event saw the caution come out before lap one was scored when Joe Dent spun in turn three. When the race got going it was Jeremy Snow grabbing the race lead but that would be short lived as the caution came out for Morgan Dennis in turn four. Travis Rewerts was able to use the restart to advantage and take over the top spot away. The red flag came out a few laps later when Dent took a tumble in turn three after contact with Tyler Lee. Rewerts was not fazed as he cruised on to to take the win ahead of Owen Carlson, Jeremy Snow, Cole Elton and Dennis.

Matt Pool led from start to finish in the Front Wheel Drive feature that went caution free. Pool held off several challenges from James Harring the entire race. Harring finished second, Chris Bozarth was third, Wade King was fourth and Tyler Harring was fifth.

In the Cruiser Cars, Ray Hill and Austin Schuring looked to be heading on to the win until lap traffic slowed him down that allowed Jacob and Laverne Lehman to chase them down. Lehman and Lehman used the lap car to get by Hill and Schuring coming to the white flag and they would hold on to take the win. Hill and Schuring was second ahead of Duane and Jesse Zander, Nick Runyan and Robert Jones, Dakota Tutle and Bryan Swarts.

Dalton Sowers led the entire Junior Front Wheel Drive feature despite challenges from Jordan Ford. Ford finished second, Kole Adams was third, Dylan Zack was fourth and Brady Austin was fifth.

Brooklyn Henderson grabbed the lead early in the Hobby Stocks feature but just after the completion of lap two, the caution came out for Jeremiah Andrews in turn four.  Henderson continued to lead despite Jacob Lehman and Travis Fenton battling right behind her those two cars would get together in turn one and bring out another caution. Henderson led until Bruce Kline was able to work his way to the top spot. Kline went on to take the win,  Leroy Kline finished second, Fenton finished third, Brandon Long was fourth and Morgan Kline was fifth.

Open Figure 8 class was next and it was Bradly Graham taking the early lead but then experience issues forcing him to the pits that gave the lead over Jerrod Thompson. Thompson led the remaining laps to take the win ahead of Jesse Sanders,  Nic Runyan, Alan Scholton and Ted Armstrong.

In Stock Figure 8 class saw the Vandermolen's ran one and two the entire race. Josh Vandermolen grabbed the race lead but just after lap one, the red flag came out for Daryl Cavin got caught up on a tractor tire in turn three and four. Josh Vandermolen went on to take the win ahead with Mike Vandemolen finishing second. Anthony Goldsberry finished third, Rick Goldsberry was fourth and Zach Danner was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the Pro Stock Figure 8 class saw Aaron "Rowdy" Roudabush led from start to finish in the feature that went caution free. Brad Graham finished runner-up, Clayton Danner was third, Kyle Richardson was fourth and Butch Lester was fifth.

Mechanic Races took to the track after the features and in Mechanic Race number one it was Connor Fraker winning in Kyle Richardson's car and Mechanic Race number two it was a mystery driver in Brandon Long's hot rod.

Night number two of the Brooklyn Nationals sponsored by Lakeside Hotel and Casino will get underway at 6 pm. For More information check out brooklynraceway.org or Brooklyn Raceway on Facebook.

Last Minute Decision To Brooklyn Raceway

Made a last minute decision to make my first trip of 2019 to the Brooklyn Raceway last night for some Figure 8 and Circle Track Racing with around 80 entries signed in not including the powder puff races to race on a Sunday Night during Labor Day Weekend. It was so last minute that i missed the Micro Sprints and Front Wheel Drive heats but I was glad I did bc the racing was exciting all night long.

First feature of the night was the 30 lap Micro Sprints Feature event. Before a lap was completed the caution came out for Zach Nelson and Scott Anderson getting together in turn two. When it did get going Tyler Lee grabbed the early lead until Travis Rewerts worked his way into the top spot on lap 10. The caution came out out again on lap 15 when Greg Dennis came to a top on the backstretch and then again on the restart when Austin Damey spun in turn two. Rewerts led the remaining laps despite a pair of late race cautions. Rewerts took the win ahead of Johnny Mordock, Owen Carlson, Morgan Dennis and Lee.

John Schuring led until the white flag was displayed in the Front Wheel Drive feature event. That was until Tyler Haring made the move to take over the top spot and go on to take the win ahead of Schuring. Tony Audas finished third and Danny Robinson was fourth.

Dave Sellers led from start to finish in the Figure 8 Trucks division. Tim McKee finished second, Isaac McKee was third, Mark Ruggles was fourth and Deal Keasling was fifth.

In the Cruiser Class, Laverne and Jacob Lehman wrestled the lead away early from Austin Schuring and Ray Hill. Lehman/Lehman managed to lead all the laps and going on to take the easy win ahead of Schuring/Hill. Tristen LaRue/Carlie Miller finished third, Dan Olson/Steve Olson and Bruce Kline/Danielle Kline rounded out the top five.

Ethan Wauters took the lead early in the Junior Front Wheel Drive feature event and never looked back taking the win ahead of Jeremy Williams and Dallon Sowers.

Hobby Stocks 12 lap feature went to Travis Fenton. Only race caution came out on lap three when Jacob Lehman got sideways exiting two making contact with Bruce Kline and Brandon Long. Fenton was not fazed as he went on to take the win ahead of Lehman, Brian Stevens, Garrett Croy and Brooklyn Henderson.

Jerrod Thompson won the Open Figure 8 Class with the only thing really slowing him down was a pair of cautions on lap eight. First caution was for debris in turn one and the second one on the restart when Jesse Sanders rolls in turn three of the Figure 8. Thompson took the win with Ted Armstrong, Sanders, Josh Firkins and Payton Clabaugh rounding out the top five.

Rick Goldsberry led from start to finish in the Stock Figure 8 Class with cautions on lap four and eight. The lap four caution was for Mark Housley in turn four after making contact with Josh Albertson, who lost his right rear axle. The lap eight caution was for Rodney Morse spinning in the middle of the Figure 8. Goldsberry held off Mike Vander Molen to take the win. Josh Vander Molen finished third, Morse was fourth and Jerome Kline was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the Pro-Stock Figure 8 feature. Scott Shook grabbed the early lead until a pair of cautions on lap four, first for Albie Parker spinning in turn two and then for Aaron Roudabush and DJ Draughn getting together in turn one. Shook had to contend with Kyle Richardson on the restart and intial held him off until Richardson was able to wrestle the lead away on lap six. Richardson went on to take the win, Draughn worked his way back up to finish second, Shook was third, Cameron Eichhorn was fourth and Butch Lester was fifth.

Powder Puffs also took to the speedway after all the feature events were complete. Kelsey Bradwell won the first Powder Puff Race and Kaitlyn Schuring won the second Powder Puff Race. Both led all six laps in their respectively races.

You still have a chance to check out the Brooklyn Raceway in 2019 as the Speedway hosts the Brooklyn Raceway Fall Nationals presented by Lakeside Casino & Resort on Friday September 13th and Saturday September 14th. Three Divisions of Figure 8's (Open, Stock & Pro-Stock) plus Front Wheel Drives, JR Front Wheel Drive, Cruisers, Hobby Stocks and Micro Sprints.
