Barnes, Ulin, Lowry and Hughes Victorious at Bloomfield

Barnes, Ulin, Lowry and Hughes Victorious at Bloomfield
by Jeremy Fox

Bloomfield, Iowa (July 30th, 2016) - A few weeks ago, I was asked by normal scorer of Bloomfield and Eldon to go fill in for her at Bloomfield on Saturday Night and I accepted and other than the two hour drive from Marshalltown, it was a really good night. Not only was i doing scoring duties but i also was on the raceceiver to the drivers.

First feature of the night was the Sport Compacts 12 lap event and it was a pair of 13B's on the front row, Josh Barnes in the 13B and Brandon Ruffcorn in the 13BX. It was Barnes wrestling the top spot away from Ruffcorn and never looked back cruising on to the win. Ruffcorn ran second the entire distance, Kyle Boyd finish third, Brandon Reu finished fourth and Brandon Housley finished fifth.

Justin Millhouse and Sierra Wilsey led the field to the green in the 14 lap Hobby Stock feature but before a lap was completed Millhouse, Wilsey and Christian Huffman got together on the backstretch forcing a complete restart. That moved up Dustin Griffiths and August Bach to the front row and it was August Bach taking the lead but Griffiths stayed close until Griffiths experience mechanical issues forcing him to exit on lap three. Bach than saw Nick Ulin running second but then the caution came out on lap nine for Chris Archer in turn nine. Bach and Ulin began to battled for the lead and it was Ulin taking the lead on lap 11 when Bach experienced issues forcing him out of the race. Ulin led the remaining laps to take the win ahead of Scott Shull, Jon Irwin, Huffman and PJ Veenstra.

The 16 lap SportMod feature, saw the caution come out before a single lap was completed when Steven Berry, Aaron Bridgeman, Danny Brau and Colton Nelson all got together in turn three forcing the caution to be displayed. Michael Guthrie and Jim Walker led the field to the green when the race got going but it was Brett Lowry grabbing the lead early. Lowry look comfortable out front until the caution came out on lap ten for Brandon Dale coming to a stop in turn two. Lowry had Lancaster and Jason McDaniel on his back bumper but that was not going to deny Lowry the win as he led the remaining laps to take the victory. McDaniel ran second the last six laps with Lancaster in third. Jim Walker was fourth and Colton Nelson came back to finish fifth.

Shane Paris grabbed the lead early in 18 lap Stock Car feature but Mike Hughes, started eighth by then end of lap one, Hughes was running second. Hughes grabbed the top spot away just before the caution on lap three for Brad Egbert in turn two. Hughes and Paris continued to run one and two but the field saw the caution again on lap six for Derek Kirkland, Darin Dezwarte and Riley Newton on backstretch. Hughes went on to take the win, Ryan Cook finished second, Jason See was third, Paris slipped back to fourth and Howard Gordon Jr, driving brother Daniel's Stock car, finished in fifth.

Check out Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway on Facebook for information on the next race on September 24th in Bloomfield. Next race for the Bloomfield and Eldon series is September 10th for the Peterson Memorial and then September 23rd in Eldon followed by Bloomfield on the 24th.

Aikey, Spangler and Anderson All Take Thrillers at Iowa State Fair Speedway

Aikey, Spangler and Anderson All Take Thrillers at Iowa State Fair Speedway
by Jeremy Fox

Des Moines, Iowa (July 29th, 2016) - Last Night put the 2016 racing season to an end at the Iowa State Fair Speedway presented by Hy-Vee, Fueled by Casey's General Stores and Driven by Karl Peformance. Three Youngsters went home with a bike courtesy of Jim's Johns Portible Toilets and everybody in attendance saw excing finishes in all three feature events.

During the Casey's General Stores Redraw for the IMCA Late Models, it was seven time series and current point leader getting the lucky number one pizza box giving him the pole for the 40 lap feature event meanwhile Joe Zrostlik got the number two.

In the 40 lap Deery Brothers Summer Series feature for the IMCA Late Models, Jeff Aikey took advantage of the pole by jumping out to the top spot. Aikey saw a pair of early race cautions slowing him down, first on lap three for Tim Cooney in turn two and then on lap nine for Paul Glendenning in turn four.  Aikey got a great restart after the lap nine but so did Tyler Bruening, who moved his way up from his sixth place starting spot. Bruening began to challenge Aikey for the race lead, as they pulled away from the rest of the field. Bruening got alongside Aikey when the encounter lap traffic just before the halfway point. Bruening tried several times to get by Aikey but failed and on the final lap, Bruening tried a crossover move on Aikey but Aikey held on to take the win by less than a car length at the line. The win was Aikey's 67th career Deery Brothers Summer Series win, seventh Deery win at ISF and allowing him to extend his Deery Series to six points over Bruening heading into Tipton on Tuesday. Ray Guss Jr finished third in his final time at ISF, Jake Neal was fourth and Chad Holladay was fifth. Charlie McKenna, Joel Callahan, Ryan Dolan, Scott Fitzpatrick and Matt Ryan rounded out the top ten. Darrel DeFrance finished 11th but extended his streak to 461 Deery Series Races. Callahan won the $250 Sunoco Race Fuels feature qualifer drawing.

Ryan Grochala and Brandon Cox led the field to the green in the IMCA Hobby Stocks 12 lap feature event and it was Grochala grabbing the top spot. Just after the completion of lap two, the caution came out for Kenny Hay spinning in turn four, Sabrina Killen had no where to go, she would slam in the side of Hay forcing the yellow to turn to red. Both drivers would get out of their cars but their night was done. Grochala now knew a restart was coming and knew that the 2016 track champion Shannon Anderson was some where near and he was right because Anderson was in second. Anderson tried to get by Grochala but it was Grochala holding off the challenge until two to go. Anderson made the move and got by on lap ten and would lead the remaining laps to take the feature win. Grochala was second, Bill Bonnett was third, Patrick Pellman was fourth and Brandon Cox was fifth.

In the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks 12 lap feature event, It was Bryan Spangler grabbing the top spot early but just after the completion of lap one, the caution came out when Jay Street, driving Lou Siplot's truck, spun on the back stretch. Spangler was not letting that bother him as held on to the race lead until lap five when Tony Moro took the top spot away on the highside. Spangler did not give up as he came back by on lap six. The caution again came out on lap seven when Andrew Clark was unable to get off the race track and came to a stop in turn two and then again on lap eight for Del Enos spinning on the end of turn two. Spangler meanwhile was holding off Tony Moro and his son Matt Moro, both of the Moros showed their nose but could not get by and when the caution came out again for Street and Enos just before the white flag forcing a green-white-checkered finish some wonder if Spangler could hold them off. Spangler again got a great restart and so did Matt Moro, Moro would grab the top spot in turns one and two just after the white flag but Spangler would pull the same move back on Moro in turn four. Spangler beat Moro to the finish line to take his first win of the season. Matt Moro, Tony Moro, Larry Webb and Rick Clark rounded out the top five.

Musselman, Shute, Bach and Gordon Take First Wins at ISF

Musselman, Shute, Bach and Gordon Take First Wins at ISF
by Jeremy Fox

Des Moines, Iowa (July 8th, 2016) - Friday Night racing action returned to the Iowa State Fair Speedway for the final month of the racing season. The night was full of action packed and exciting finishes in the feature events with very few cautions.

Taylor Musselman (IMCA SportMods), Todd Shute (IMCA Modifieds), August Bach (IMCA Hobby Stocks) and Daniel Gordon (IMCA Stock Cars) all picked up their first win at ISF in 2016. Todd Inman (Trucks), Ben Nading (IMCA Late Models) and Tyler Drueke (IMCA RaceSaver Sprints) all made a return visit.

First feature of the night was the 12 lap Karl Chevrolet Dirt Truck feature and it was Anthony Moro and his father Matt leading the field to green. Matt Moro bested the younger Moro to take the lead. Moro looked comfortable out front meanwhile Todd Inman worked his way up to second and chase down Matt for the lead. Inman led laps eight and nine until lap traffic allowed Matt to make the move back on by on lap ten. Inman did not give up as he made the move on the final lap to take his sixth win. Matt Moro finished second, John Davis was third, Pat Gordin was fourth and Larry Webb was fifth.

Kyle Webb led lap one of the IMCA SportMods 12 lap feature event but the caution came out when Tyler Inman spun in turn four. Robert Moore got by Webb on the restart and appeared to be heading on to his first of the season but Taylor Musselman chase down and completed the pass on the last lap to take the win. Moore finished second ahead of Jack Housley, Dusty Masolini and Jerry Hinton.

John Davis led the first handful of laps in the IMCA Modifieds 15 lap feature event before Todd Shute took the lead away and never looked back as Shute took his first. Davis, Nick Roberts, Greg Cox and Russ Gladson rounded out the top five.

Before a lap was completed in the IMCA Hobby Stocks 12 lap feature event, the red flag came out when Tommy Killen Jr rolled in turn four collecting Steven Crees, Killen's night was over meanwhile Crees was able to continue. August Bach took that to his advantage as he grabbed the top spot on the restart and had to hold a last lap challenge from Shannon Anderson to take his first at ISF. Anderson finished second for the second race in a row. John Watson, Ryan Grochala and Ray Stock Jr finished third through fifth.

Don Wear led the first lap of the IMCA Stock Cars 15 lap event but it was Randy Killen taking the lead away on lap two. Killen bobbled and left the door open for Daniel Gordon to take the lead away and it was Gordon cruising off in to the sunset to victory. Killen held off Todd Inman for second, Todd Fisher held off Gary Bass for fourth.

Ben Nading led all 18 laps of the Larry Fleck & Son's Trucking IMCA Late Models feature but he had to hold off several challenges from Charlie McKenna for the win. Also slowing Nading was a pair of cautions first for debris in turn four and then for Curt Schroeder spinning in turn three. Nading was determined to not be denied the win, like he was two weeks ago as he went on to take his second at ISF in 2016. McKenna finished second with Darrel DeFrance in third, Allan Hopp got by Paul Glendenning for fourth.

Final feature of the night was the 15 lap IMCA RaceSaver Sprints feature and it was Koddy Hildreth grabbing the top spot but just after the first lap was scored, the red flag was displayed when Brandon Worthington took a tumble in turn four. Tyler Thompson grabbed the top spot away on the restart and appeared to be heading to the win but something began to slow Thompson on lap nine allowing Clint Benson take the top spot away but Tyler Drueke followed suit and it was Drueke taking the lead away on lap ten. Just after the completion of lap ten, the caution came out when Thompson came to a rest on the front stretch. Drueke and Benson battled it out with Drueke holding the top spot and finding his way back to victory lane. Mike Moore finished third, Austin Johnson was fourth and Eric Bridger was fifth.

Final checkered flag flew at 9:57 pm. Racing action continues next week with another Weekly Points Night featuring all seven classes, this also be the first of four races in the spand of one week.

Abelson Makes Long Tow Worth It As He Claims Victory In Webster City

Abelson Makes Long Tow Worth It As He Claims Victory In Webster City

A few weeks ago i was asked to head to the Hamilton County Speedway to fill in by Ryan Bergeson, who was going to go down to Florida for a Family vacation including a visit to the Daytona for the Coke Zero 400 and with an available Saturday on my schedule i said yes. 103 cars checked in including several regulars in Harlan making the trek over after early day rain dampened their saturday holiday weekend plans.

Jason Hahne (IMCA Late Models), Chris Abelson (IMCA Modifieds), Steve Meyer (IMCA Stock Cars), Doug Smith (IMCA SportMods) and Danny Ayers (IMCA Hobby Stocks) all claimed feature wins on U.S. Cellular Night at the Hamilton County Speedway.

First feature of the night was the IMCA Hobby Stocks 16 lap feature but before a lap was completed, Dakota Feickert spun in turn four forcing a complete restart. On the restart, it was the "Dilly Bar Special" of Danny Ayers grabbing to spot just before another caution was displayed on lap one for Gilliland in turn two and Corey Roe on the frontstretch. Ayers got a great restart and began to pull away but Craig Graham chase him down and began to battle for the top spot but it was Ayers hold on to take his second win of the season. Graham finished second, Myles Michehl was third, Ryan Boland was fourth and Tommy Beekman was fifth.

Autum Anderson led lap one of the IMCA Northern SportMods feature event but it was Doug Smith taking the lead away on lap two. Smith started to pull away but the caution came out on lap four, first for Travis Staley in turn three and debris in turn two and then on the restart, Jason Bass spun in turn two and collected Rick Fasse, Justin Patterson, Jared Van Deest and Carter VanDenBerg. Smith got a great restart but the caution was displayed again just after the fifth circruit was scored when Bryan Johnson spun in turn three. Smith was finally able to get a commanding lead only to see the caution come out on lap 15 for Levi Chipp in turn four forcing a green-white-checkered finish.  Just after Smith took the white flag on the restart the red flag came out when Jerid Ratzke got into the front stretch wall collecting George Gilliland, Levi Chipp and Bryan Johnson. Johnson ended upside down in turn one. This forced racing officials to make it a green-white restart and Smith held on to take his fourth win at Webster City. Ty Griffith, Rocky Caudle, Josh Appel and Carter VanDenBerg rounded out the top five.

Vince Loewen and John Campbell led the field to the green in the 18 lap Stock Car feature event but it was Jason Minnehan taking the top spot early. Minnehan left the door open to get back by Campbell to take the lead away on lap three.  Minnehan worked his way back by Campbell on lap seven and he would hold the top spot until the only caution came out on lap 13 for Parker Slagle in turn four. Minnehan saw Matt Ring and Steve Meyer got back on his bumper only to take the top spot away and it was Meyer cruising on to his second win in a row and third win of the season. Devin Smith finished second, Minnehan was third, Reid Keller was fourth and Ring fell back to fifth.

Cole Hall and Tristan Vesterby led the field to the green in the 20 lap IMCA Modifieds feature event and it was Hall leading the first five laps before Vesterby took the lead away on lap five. Vesterby time out front was short lived as Ethan Dotson from Bakersfield, California took the top spot away on lap seven. The only caution came out on lap eight for Bill Crimmins and Coty Albers on the back stretch. Dotson saw Chris Abelson and Scott Olson right behind him but held them off until Abelson was able to sneak by on lap 15. Abelson led remaining laps making the long tow from Sioux City worth it as he found his way to victory lane. Dotson finished second ahead of fellow Californian Cody Laney, Tim Ward and Tyler Prochaska.

Final feature of the night was the 20 lap Neighbor's Heating, Cooling and Plumbing IMCA Late Models feature event. Paul Conrad led the first two laps before "Hollywood" Jason Hahne powered his Billy Moyer Victory Race Car by on lap three. Hahne pulled away and never looked back going on to take his third win at his hometown track. Gabe Umbarger finished a distance second, Darrel DeFrance finished third, Jeremy Grady was fourth and Charlie McKenna was fifth.

Goedert and Petrzelka Win Their First on J & V Napa Night at Marshalltown

Goedert and Petrzelka Win Their First on J & V Napa Night at Marshalltown
by Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (July 1st, 2016) - With Good Guys Car Show taking over the Iowa State Fairgrounds this holiday weekend, the Iowa State Fair Speedway had the night off that meant a short five minute trip from my house to the Marshalltown Speedway for J & V Napa Auto Parts Night. The IMCA Late Models added to the card on Friday night and 20 checked in to tame high-banked quarter mile with a total of 124 cars signed in.

Not only the pits being full but the grandstands were a packed house as many people came out to enjoy a night of dirt track racing action. Josh May (Mod Lites), Eric Stanton (IMCA Hobby Stocks), Jacob Murray (IMCA Modifieds) and Damon Murty (IMCA Stock Cars) all made a return visit to victory lane meanwhile Luke Goedert took the IMCA Late Models and Matt Petrzelka in the IMCA SportMods.

First feature of the night was the 12 lap Mod Lites feature, DJ Schmalzried and Larry Sorenson led the field to the green but by the end of lap one, it was Josh May grabbing the top spot from his fifth place starting position. The only thing slowing, May from winning was the caution on lap four for his sister Chelsea May spinning in turn two. May went on to take his third win at Marshalltown this season, second win on a weekly points night. Mike Morrill finished second, Cory Sauerman was third, Joel Huggins was fourth and Joe Glick was fifth.

Shawn Cooney wrestled the lead away from Kevin Yearington, early in the 18 lap IMCA SportMods feature event. Shortly after the completion of lap one, the caution came out when Blair Simmons went off the top side of turn one. Cooney got a great restart initially but Matt Petrzelka took the top spot away on lap three and the only thing denying him the win was the caution on lap seven when Simmons again went off turn one. Petrzelka had Cooney and Yearington on his back bumper on the restart but he got a fantastic restart and cruised on to take his first win at Marshalltown. Jared Van Deest worked his way up from 11th and made a late race pass on Cooney for second pushing Cooney to third. Yearington was fourth and Carter VanDenBerg was fifth.

Eugene Nicklas grabbed the lead early in the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event, that saw 27 cars take the green but the caution came out on lap two when David Simpson spun in turn three. Nicklas continued the lead despite another caution on lap four when Ryan Grochala, Allen Fleener and Mitchell Thomas got together in turn four. Nicklas looked to be heading on to the win but a caution on lap 13 for debris on the backstretch forced a restart and that was just what Eric Stanton needed as Stanton got by Nicklas. Stanton took his ninth win at Motown ahead of Nicklas, Leah Wroten, Bill Bonnett and Ray Stock Jr.

The Class to Tough to Tame, the IMCA Stock Cars were next for their 20 lap feature event and it was Jay Schmidt taking the top spot early. Schmidt led until lap seven when Damon Murty took the top spot away. Murty cruised on to an easy win, his third win at Motown (second on weekly points night). Justin Temeyer grabbed second away from Schmidt as they encounter lap traffic. Donavon Smith finished fourth and Steve Meyer was fifth.

Derek Reimer led the first three laps for the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature but Jenae Gustin took the top spot away on lap four. Gustin saw the caution come out on lap 12, first for Trent Jackson in turn one and then again on the restart when her brother Jimmy Gustin drove it hard off turn one. Gustin had Ronn Lauritzen and Jacob Murray on her back bumper, She was able to hold them off until lap 17 when Murray made the pass and took the lead away just before the final race caution when Devon Havlik spun in turn two. Murray went on to take his fourth of the season at Marshalltown. Gustin, Lauritzen, Tim Ward and Racer Hulin rounded out the top five.

Final feature of the night was the 25 lap IMCA Late Models feature event and it was a pair of veterans Greg Kastli and Darrel DeFrance leading the field to the green, DeFrance would grab the top spot. DeFrance looked comfortable on the high side but Luke Goedert was working the bottom side and it was Goedert taking the lead away on lap eight. Goedert and the field saw the caution come out on lap 14 for Gabe Umbarger in turn four. Goedert saw Charlie McKenna and DeFrance on his back bumper but Goedert did not get the great restart as DeFrance got by McKenna and went back up took the lead back on lap 17. Goedert however did not give up as he took the top spot back on lap 18 and went on to take the win. DeFrance finished second ahead of Jeff Aikey, McKenna and Ben Seeman.

Racing action was finished just before 10:30pm on Friday Night so all in all great night. Thanks to Toby Kruse for letting come on a Friday Night that Des Moines was off. I look foreward to August as the season at Des Moines wraps this month, that means I will be there to attend every night.
