Goedert and Petrzelka Win Their First on J & V Napa Night at Marshalltown
by Jeremy Fox
Marshalltown, Iowa (July 1st, 2016) - With Good Guys Car Show taking over the Iowa State Fairgrounds this holiday weekend, the Iowa State Fair Speedway had the night off that meant a short five minute trip from my house to the Marshalltown Speedway for J & V Napa Auto Parts Night. The IMCA Late Models added to the card on Friday night and 20 checked in to tame high-banked quarter mile with a total of 124 cars signed in.
Not only the pits being full but the grandstands were a packed house as many people came out to enjoy a night of dirt track racing action. Josh May (Mod Lites), Eric Stanton (IMCA Hobby Stocks), Jacob Murray (IMCA Modifieds) and Damon Murty (IMCA Stock Cars) all made a return visit to victory lane meanwhile Luke Goedert took the IMCA Late Models and Matt Petrzelka in the IMCA SportMods.
First feature of the night was the 12 lap Mod Lites feature, DJ Schmalzried and Larry Sorenson led the field to the green but by the end of lap one, it was Josh May grabbing the top spot from his fifth place starting position. The only thing slowing, May from winning was the caution on lap four for his sister Chelsea May spinning in turn two. May went on to take his third win at Marshalltown this season, second win on a weekly points night. Mike Morrill finished second, Cory Sauerman was third, Joel Huggins was fourth and Joe Glick was fifth.
Shawn Cooney wrestled the lead away from Kevin Yearington, early in the 18 lap IMCA SportMods feature event. Shortly after the completion of lap one, the caution came out when Blair Simmons went off the top side of turn one. Cooney got a great restart initially but Matt Petrzelka took the top spot away on lap three and the only thing denying him the win was the caution on lap seven when Simmons again went off turn one. Petrzelka had Cooney and Yearington on his back bumper on the restart but he got a fantastic restart and cruised on to take his first win at Marshalltown. Jared Van Deest worked his way up from 11th and made a late race pass on Cooney for second pushing Cooney to third. Yearington was fourth and Carter VanDenBerg was fifth.
Eugene Nicklas grabbed the lead early in the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event, that saw 27 cars take the green but the caution came out on lap two when David Simpson spun in turn three. Nicklas continued the lead despite another caution on lap four when Ryan Grochala, Allen Fleener and Mitchell Thomas got together in turn four. Nicklas looked to be heading on to the win but a caution on lap 13 for debris on the backstretch forced a restart and that was just what Eric Stanton needed as Stanton got by Nicklas. Stanton took his ninth win at Motown ahead of Nicklas, Leah Wroten, Bill Bonnett and Ray Stock Jr.
The Class to Tough to Tame, the IMCA Stock Cars were next for their 20 lap feature event and it was Jay Schmidt taking the top spot early. Schmidt led until lap seven when Damon Murty took the top spot away. Murty cruised on to an easy win, his third win at Motown (second on weekly points night). Justin Temeyer grabbed second away from Schmidt as they encounter lap traffic. Donavon Smith finished fourth and Steve Meyer was fifth.
Derek Reimer led the first three laps for the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature but Jenae Gustin took the top spot away on lap four. Gustin saw the caution come out on lap 12, first for Trent Jackson in turn one and then again on the restart when her brother Jimmy Gustin drove it hard off turn one. Gustin had Ronn Lauritzen and Jacob Murray on her back bumper, She was able to hold them off until lap 17 when Murray made the pass and took the lead away just before the final race caution when Devon Havlik spun in turn two. Murray went on to take his fourth of the season at Marshalltown. Gustin, Lauritzen, Tim Ward and Racer Hulin rounded out the top five.
Final feature of the night was the 25 lap IMCA Late Models feature event and it was a pair of veterans Greg Kastli and Darrel DeFrance leading the field to the green, DeFrance would grab the top spot. DeFrance looked comfortable on the high side but Luke Goedert was working the bottom side and it was Goedert taking the lead away on lap eight. Goedert and the field saw the caution come out on lap 14 for Gabe Umbarger in turn four. Goedert saw Charlie McKenna and DeFrance on his back bumper but Goedert did not get the great restart as DeFrance got by McKenna and went back up took the lead back on lap 17. Goedert however did not give up as he took the top spot back on lap 18 and went on to take the win. DeFrance finished second ahead of Jeff Aikey, McKenna and Ben Seeman.
Racing action was finished just before 10:30pm on Friday Night so all in all great night. Thanks to Toby Kruse for letting come on a Friday Night that Des Moines was off. I look foreward to August as the season at Des Moines wraps this month, that means I will be there to attend every night.
