Chandler and Weyer Win at SIS Before Mother Nature

Despite the radar showing rain moving into western iowa we were racing at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa. It was John's Tree Service of Des Moines Night at the races and residents of Ottumwa and Hedrick get in for $5.

Also scheduled on the night was a Sport Mod King of the Hill and a Hobby Stock NASCAR Style race but because of rain coming they move them to the end of the night if we got that far. Hobby Stock NASCAR Style was then decided to be moved to next week at the drivers meeting but unfortunately though the rains would come before all of the features were complete.

The first feature of the night was the Autocrafters/Whalen Racing IMCA Sport Compacts. Current IMCA National Point Leader Bill Whalen Jr. would lead the first 4 laps before Runner-Up Merv Chandler would make the pass and take the lead on lap 5. Chandler would go on and take his 4th win at Southern Iowa Speedway. Whalen would finish 2nd with his brother John Whalen finishing 3rd. Matt Beal would make his first ever apperarance at SIS and finish 4th and Ronald McCish would experience early mechanical troubles and not make the call for the feature.

Shortly after the Sport Compacts feature it would start to sprinkle but the Pyramid Graphics and Sports IMCA SportMod feature would come out on to the track. Bryon Weyer would take the lead but shortly after 1 lap was completed the caution would come out. Weyer wouldn't let it bother him as he would go on and take his 2nd win at SIS. Jesse Sobbing would end up finishing a close 2nd. Curtis Vanderwal , Eric Flander and Carter Vandenberg would round out the top 5.

Next up was the IMCA Hobby Stock Feature but just after 1 lap was completed the caution would come out as the rain start to pick up and after a  look at the radar the call was made to cancel for the rest of the night and make up the features next week.

Racing resumes next Wednesday Night at the Southern Iowa Speedway with the 1st Community Credit Union IMCA Hobby Stock Special plus make-up features in the IMCA Hobby Stocks, IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Stock Cars, Hot Laps at 7 pm and Racing to Follow.

Murphy wins the Memorial Day Deery Series Classic at Boone

My Memorial Day Weekend ventures ended at the Boone Speedway again where i took in the Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models. Also racing was the IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Hobby Stocks and Mod Lites.

Despite the low car count there was some great racing action all night only 2 divisions required a b-main and they were the SportMods and Hobby Stocks. 23 Late Models took to battle at the Boone Speedway for the annual Memorial Day Shootout.

First feature of the night was the Mod Lites 18 lap feature. Just 2 days ago Josh May would end his race on his side but tonight he would advantage as he would redraw the pole and lead from start to finish in the feature that would go green-to-checkered. Ed Zehm would be in 2nd all 18 laps and Joel Keenan would be in 3rd. Randy Bryan and Jason Whitehead rounded out the top 5.

Up next was the IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series feature and it was Tyler Bruening and Mike Murphy Jr. earning the front row. Murphy would take the lead and look to be going on to the easy win until lap traffic. Murphy and Bruening would get through the lap traffic and then with just 2 laps to go the caution came out for Jason Hahne spinning around in turn 4. On the restart however there would be another caution coming out for six cars getting together in turn 4 blocking traffic (i like to call this a road blocker). Murphy would have Bruening and Jeff Aikey behind him but Murphy would get a great restart but just after another lap was completed the caution would out for 4 cars getting together in turn 4 (i like to call this a parking lot). Murphy would go on and take the win with Bruening and Aikey in 2nd and 3rd. Ray Guss Jr. and Luke Goedert would end up 4th and 5th.

Andy Mahlstedt would lead the first 4 laps in the Pickett Salvage IMCA Hobby Stock feature before being pasted by John Watson. Watson would take the lead on lap 5 and go on and take his 5th win of the year at Boone. Mahlstedt would finish 2nd, Tyler Pickett was 3rd, Dustin Filloon was 4th and Robert Smith was 5th.

IMCA SportMods feature would see Darren Huntley take the lead early but would have have several challenges from Scott Davis through out the race. The only race caution came out on lap 13 for Jared Van Deest in turn 1, when the race resumed Huntley would resume command but have to deal with Davis and Daniel Tasler. Huntley, Davis and Tasler would be 3 wide and it was Tasler making the pass and taking the lead. Davis would slide in to 2nd and Huntley would experience trouble. Tasler took the win, Davis was 2nd, Eric Elliott ended up 3rd, Casey Greubel was 4th and Joel Rust was 5th.

Final Feature of the night was the IMCA Stock Cars feature. Eric Brown would lead the first 4 laps but however he was penalized for jumping the start so that would credit the lead over to Michael Murphy and with that it meant Murphy would lead all 20 laps. The only caution came out on lap 7 when Adam Hilgenberg would spin in turn 4. Murphy would take the win over Michael Jaennette, 77x and David Smith.

Racing came to and end at 9:15 pm. Next up for the Deery Brother Summer Series will be Tuesday June 12th and the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton for the Doubleheader with the JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour. For information about the Deery Series check out http://www.imca.com/

The Boone Speedway will be back in action on Saturday Night for more information check out http://www.raceboone.com/

Gustin dominates and wins the Ron Little Memorial

Sunday Night my ventures took me to the Stuart International Speedway in Stuart for the 13th Annual Ron Little Memorial. The track would be very dry slick but not because the lack of effort because Chuck Vanderheiden and the track crew would try to keep moisture but when you have 90 degree day and strong wind from the south that effort would go on noticed. The racing would be great all night and there was several times through out the night were it would be 3 and 4 wide racing.

The first feature of the night was the IMCA Sport Compacts feature. Adam Kralik would lead the first lap but it was Mike Nehring making the move and pass on lap 2 to take the lead. Nehring would go on and take the win with Jer Pedersen finishing 2nd, Jordan Peters in 3rd and Kralik finishing 4th.

The IMCA SportMods feature would have a little trouble getting started as the yellow flag would fly twice before 1 lap was completed. Casey Greubel would take the lead when the race got going and he would hold on to the lead until lap 10 despite cautions on lap 5 and 8. Greubel would be in a battle with Clint Luellen and Josh Pruitt, Luellen and Pruitt would get by Greubel when he would lose the handle just slightly in turn 2. Luellen would lead lap 10 but would be side-by-side with Pruitt, Pruitt would lead the remaining laps and take the win by a very thin margin over Luellen. Nick Roberts, Austin Kaplan and Racer Hulin would finish 3rd through 5th.

James Britton would lead the first 6 laps in the 6 cylinder Front Wheel Drive Feature that would go green to checkered but it would be Wade King leading the final 2 laps to take the win. Britton would end up 2nd, Andy Forcht was 3rd, Adam Kralik was 4th and Mike Nehring was 5th.

Brandon Pruitt would lead the entire 15 lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature that would go green-to-checkered. John Watson, Austin Luellen, Matt Webb and Jason Kohl would complete out the top 5.

In the caution filled IMCA Stock Car feature it was Jeff Anderson leading from start to finish but not after several challenges from Jamie Schirm early in the race and Jeff Joldersma late in the race. Joldersma would end up finishing in 2nd. Finishing behind Anderson and Joldersma was Brian Blessington, Schirm and Marcus Fagen.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Modifieds 25 lap feature and it would be "Jammin" Jimmy Gustin leading from start to finish. There wouls be 2 cautions on lap 9 and 2 cautions on lap 21 but that wouldn't bother Gustin as he would go on and take the win, his 3rd Ron Little Memorial crown. Todd Shute would have a strong run to finish 2nd. Rex Parkison, Randy Havlik and Jacob Murray would round out the top 5.

Racing came to an end at 9:23pm and after making the roughly 90 mile drive back home including a stop in Des Moines to get a gatorade to finish the hour drive home i was back home by a little after 11 pm. Thanks to Chuck for letting me come down and thanks to track announcer Johnnie Tharp for letting me announce the 6 cylinder FWD feature it was fun.

For more information about the Stuart Speedway check out http://www.stuartspeedway.net/.

For me its off the to the Boone Speedway for the Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models even though i would love to go to the I-35 Speedway in Mason City for the JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour race.

Marshalltown and Boone Recaps

Mother Nature wins at Marshalltown

Just as the night was getting going Mother Nature would drop rain on the race track. Track crew would get the track back into shape in time to run hot laps but just as hot laps were ending the rain came again forcing the cancellation.

Race fans, drivers and crews are reminded to keep there ticket stub and pit passes from tonight’s races to be used next week at the speedway.

Next Friday Night it will be Minute Man Printing Night with Hot Laps at 6:45 pm and racing at 7:30 pm.

Zehm, Elliott, Shute, Munson and Watson Win at Boone

Just like i do every memorial day weekend on saturday's when i stay home and don't go with family to Minnesota i head to Iowa's Action Track the Boone Speedway for a great night of racing. There would be great battles in all the features for the wins and there was defintely some flames flying.

First feature of the night was the Mod Lites and it was "Huggie Bear" Joel Huggins taking the early race lead but then a race caution on lap 6 when Rick Taylor's ride would go up in a fireball. On the restart, Huggins would have to deal with Travis Stensland, Mike Kennedy and Ed Zehm. Kennedy and Zehm would get by Stensland and set their sights on getting by Huggins and on lap 9, Kennedy would make the pass and take the lead. Zehm would get by Huggins on lap 12 when Huggins would lose the handle in turn 2 which collected Joel Keenan and Josh May would also get involved infortunately this would bring out the red flag as May would have his world get a little sideways, he would climb from the car and be okay. Kennedy would resume command but would have several challenges from Ed Zehm and finally on the last lap Zehm was able to make it stick and take the win from Kennedy. Mike Morrill, Jeff Stensland and Andy Hennigar would round out the top 5.

In the IMCA SportMods feature, it was new daddy Anthony Onstot leading the first 13 laps including a caution on lap 11 for Darren Huntley experiencing troubles. Again 2 laps later the caution would come out for Jeff Blume blowing up in turn 3 and this time Onstot would be passed by Daniel Tasler. Tasler looking to be going on to the win until Eric Elliott would chase him down and the old saying rubbin is racing this would stand true on the last lap as Elliott and Tasler would race side-by-side and it was Elliott taking the win and Tasler finishing 2nd. Onstot was 3rd, Andy Tiernan was 4th and Cory Rose was 5th.

Chad Louk would lead the first 7 laps of the IMCA Modified feature before Jake Durbin would make the pass to take the lead on lap 8. Shortly after there would be a race caution on lap 9 and then another one on lap 11 but it would really heat up after a caution on lap 16. Durbin would get into a heated battle with Todd Shute and when it was all over it was Shute winning with Durbin finishing 2nd. Jimmy Gustin would have the best seat to watch that battle as he would end up 3rd. Russ Dickerson and Mike VanGenderen would round out the top 5.

Mike Munson would lead the entire IMCA Stock Cars feature race but Wayne Gifford would get by Munson on the last lap however a caution would come out reverting the field back to the previous lap and ending the feature under yellow. Donavon Smith was 3rd, Rod Richards was 4th and Norman Belew was 5th.

The final feature of the night was the IMCA Hobby Stock and it would see 2 cautions before a single lap was completed when the race got going it would be Clint Rothfus taking the lead. Another race caution would come out on lap 2 when Dustin Filloon would come to a stop on the backstretch. Rothfus would have to deal with John Watson on the restart and on lap 5, Watson would make the pass and take the lead. Watson would go on an dtake the win despite a caution with 2 laps to go for debris. Aaron Rudolph, Curt Reed, Cory Adams and Rothfus rounded out the top 5.

Racing was completed at 10:45 pm and the Boone Speedway will return back to action on Monday Night for the Deery Brothers Summer Series show that will also have the IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Hobby Stocks and Mod Lites on the card.

Stenhouse Wins Again at Iowa Speedway in the Nationwide Series

After Friday Night at Marshalltown it was time for me to head off to the Iowa Speedway for a great weekend of racing where i go to watch the future stars of NASCAR in the K&N Pro Series Race on Saturday and then the NASCAR Nationwide Series on Sunday.

On Saturday the schedule include an autograph session for both series, qualifying for both, NASCAR K&N Pro Series Graham Tire 150 and the GASS Series. NASCAR Nationwide Series Qualifying would see Elliott Sadler win the pole for the Pioneer Hi-Bred 250 with a time of 23.523 secs and a speed of 133.911 mph. Sam Hornish Jr was 2nd with a speed of 133.294 mph, Ricky Stenhouse Jr was 3rd fastest with a speed of 133.114 mph, Michael McDowell was 4th with a speed of 133.085 mph and Justin Allgaier was 5th quickest with a speed of 132.514 mph.

In the NASCAR K&N Pro Series Qualifying for the Graham Tire 150 later that night. The first car to go out was Grimes, Iowa Native Brett Moffitt and he would have a speed of 132.192 mph. That speed would hold up as Moffitt would win the pole for the race. Sergio Pena, Moffitt's team mate, would be 2nd fastest in qualifying.

Next up was the Graham Tire 150 for the K&N Pro Series Race and Moffitt would jump to the lead and never look back until late in the race, we will get back to that later. The race caution would come out for Darrell Wallace Jr getting into the turn 2 wall. Moffitt would get a great restart but just 6 laps after going back to green the caution would come out again ths time for Eric Holmes, Sam Hunt and Jesse Little getting together in turn 3.

Moffitt wouldn't let that bother him as again he would have a great restart. David Mayhew would hit the turn 4 wall to bring out the caution on lap 54. The next caution came on lap 76 when it was red flagged for the mid race break which every team would come down pit road to get fuel and tires on the car. Again when the race got going it was Moffitt getting a great restart. Then the caution would come out on lap 127 for Carlos Iaconelli getting in to the wall at the accident of turn 2 and coming to a stop on the backstretch.

Moffitt would get a great restart but be chase down by Cale Conley, Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott. Conley would make contact with Moffitt on lap 145 that would allow Chase Elliott to get by and take the lead. Elliott and the field would see the caution come out on lap 146 for Ben Kennedy in turn 4 forcing the race to have a green-white-checkered finish that would extend the race 4 extra laps. Elliott would lead the remaining laps and take the win which would also allow him to extend his point lead. Elliott is the son of NASCAR Veteran Bill Elliott. Blaney, Conley, Travis Pastrana and Moffitt would round out the top 5.

After that race was the GASS Series but we headed home because of the early morning wake up call to watch Sunday's Nationwide Series Race.

In the NASCAR Nationwide Series Pioneer Hi-Bred 250 it was Sam Hornish Jr getting the great start as he would lead the first 30 laps before last year's 2 time winner at Iowa Ricky Stenhouse Jr would get by and take the lead. Stenhouse would lead until after the caution came out on lap 72 for Jeff  Green, driving for Eric McClure who was injury at Talladega, hit the turn 1 wall. Stenhouse would have lane choice but Justin Allgaier would beat him on the restart. Allgaier would hold on to the lead until Stenhouse would make the move and get the lead back on lap 87. Stenhouse would lead until the next caution came out on lap 114 when Danica Patrick would have her brakes over heat and melt the tire that shot her car straight right into the outside wall in turn 3.

Stenhouse and the leads would pit and it was Cole Whitt taking 2 tires and the lead. On the restart though Whitt would get passed by Elliott Sadler. Sadler's lead would be short lived as Stenhouse Jr would get by and take the lead. Stenhouse would lead until the restart of the next caution, which came out on lap 181 for Taylor Malsam getting in turn 2 wall. Stenhouse would choose the top lane and Kurt Busch, who made his way from the back through out the day would start on the inside. Busch would take the lead but Stenhouse would come back and take the lead on lap 192. The final race caution would come out on lap 202 for Travis Pastrana having a mechanical issue forcing him to come to a stop on the backstretch.

Stenhouse would take his 3rd straight win at Iowa, Sadler was 2nd, McDowell was 3rd, Austin Dillon was 4th and Kurt Busch end up 5th after he lost the handle while running 2nd on the last lap. Allgaier, Whitt, Parker Kligerman, Darrell Wallace Jr and Brendan Gaughan rounded out the top 10.

Next up at Iowa Speedway is coming up Friday and Saturday June 22nd and 23rd. On Friday June 22nd there will be Casey's General Store USAC Challenge USAC Racing Series & IndyCar Qualifying and on Saturday June 23rd it will be the Firestone Indy Lights Series Sukup 100 and IZOD Indy Car Series Iowa Corn Indy 250.
