Holladay, Murty, Mather, Olson, Graham, Lana, and Miller Take Victories on Tribute to Legends Night in Indee

Saturday night, I decided to venture to the Independence Motor Speedway for the Tribute to Legends Night featuring the Malvern Bank Super Late Model Racing East Series and the A.I.R.S. American Iron Racing Series. The night was a tribute to Glen Martin, Red Dralle, and Greg Hunter. The night was sponsored by Red's Limo, Curt Martin ReMax Realty, Hunter Auto Sales, Pat's Auto Salvage, Emerson Crane, Sheetz Towing, and Jim Hackett.

A total of one hundred fifty cars were in the pits to tame the 3/8-mile banked dirt track on the Buchanan County Fairgrounds, including 32 SLMR Late Models. Racing action started shortly after late model time trials, and the final checkered flag was waived at 11:46 p.m.

The first feature of the night was the CC's Floors and More IMCA Sport Compacts 16-lap feature event. Blake Driscol out wrestled Clayton Loeb for the early lead, but he was also pursued by Korey Lana, driving Jeremy Williams hot rod, and Jaice Tuttle. The caution came out on lap four when Austin Kirkpatrick spun off the top of turn three. Driscol remained out front until Lana was able to take the top spot away on lap eight. Lana went on to claim the victory ahead of Driscol, nineteenth place starter Christopher Mannion, eleventh-place starter Chris Pittman, and Loeb.

After passing points in the heat races, 2 Predator Custom Trailers b-features, and provisionals, the field of 32 Malvern Bank Super Late Model Racing Series was dwindled down to 24 cars for the thirty-lap feature event. Andy Eckrich took the early lead, fending off challenges from Jason Hahne and Derrick Stewart. Chad Holladay finally worked his lane and wasted little time getting up to challenge Eckrich for the race lead. Holladay took the top spot away on lap seven, using the high line, and started to pull away. The caution came out on lap 17 for Andrew Kosiski slowing off the backstretch. Holladay held off Eckrich on the restart, but the caution came out again on lap 21 when Dylan Thornton slipped off the top of turn four. Holladay got another great restart and went on to take the win for a $3,000 pay day. Last year, Holladay won the East Series points without getting a win, and now, after two races, he has a win and leads the points. Eckrich came home in second, Derrick Stewart in third, Nick Marolf in fourth, and fourteenth-place starter Blair Nothdurft in fifth.

Wolfey's and Eddie's IMCA Sport Mods 20-lap feature event had a little trouble getting started off on the right foot. After two attempts, Kole Quam, the pole sitter, was penalized and sent to the tail. When the race finally got rolling, Tony Olson took the top spot. Olson checked out with Will Wolf and Cole Suckow in hot pursuit. The caution came out on lap six when Curt Smeins went off the top of turn two. Olson held off any challenges until another caution on lap 16 when Mason McNett spun in turn four as Chris Lewis spun off the top of turn two. Olson fended off challenges again from Suckow to claim the victory on his birthday weekend. Suckow came home as runner-up; Kyle Olson used the high groove to come home in third; Rayce Mullen in fourth; and Wolf in fifth.

Jim Ball Jr. led the first lap of the Performance Bodies & Parts IMCA Hobby Stocks 16-lap feature event. The caution came out shortly after lap one scored for Zach McNeese, sitting on the top of the backstretch. Bradly Graham got a great restart and got by Ball for the race lead. Graham pulled away, and the only thing going to slow him down was lap traffic. The caution came out on lap 11 for debris in turn two. Graham got another great restart and cruised into victory lane. Ball, Jacob Floyd, Trenton Neuhaus, and Carson James round out the top five.

Next up was the A.I.R.S. (American Iron Racing Series) feature event, initially scheduled for fifteen laps but ending up going 16 laps because of a late-race green-white-checkered finish. Jake Hayes and Steve Olson battled side by side for the race lead in the early going. The first caution came out on lap four when Dennis Etten blew up and came to a stop in turn one. Olson was the race leader, and he continued to lead the way until Bart Miller worked his way from tenth place. Miller took over the top spot on lap 11 from Olson. Another caution came out on lap 13, when Brian Gade blew up coming to a stop. Miller held everybody off on the restart, but the caution came out again on lap 14 for Domanic McNabb spinning in turn four. Miller held on to take the win after the green-white-checkered restart. Nineth-place starter Tracy Quigley, Jake Hayes, Owen Hayes, and Bruce Yoerger finished second through fifth, respectively.

Christie Door Company IMCA Stock Cars, known as "The Class Too Tough Too Tame," lived up to their name as there were great battles throughout the field. Scooter Dulin and Kaden Reynolds battled for the top spot early, with Dulin leading the first two laps. Reynolds took the top spot away and looked pretty tough out front as John Oliver Jr., Cole Mather, and Rowdee Van Genderen entered the battle with Dulin. The first caution was on lap seven when Dru Kueker spun turns one and two. Reynolds held off all challenges on the restart initially until Mather worked his way into second. Mather took the top spot away on lap 12 just prior to a pair of cautions. The first caution on lap 12 was for Dulin spinning in turn one. The second one was on the restart when Braxton Franks, Dulin, Buck Swanson, and Russell Damme Jr. all got together in turn one. Mather got a great restart and went on to take the feature win. Twelfth-place starter Tom Schmitt moved through the field to finish second. Reynolds fell back to third, Oliver came in fourth, and Jarod Weepie came home in fifth.

Final feature of the night was the Waterloo Auto Parts IMCA Modifieds 20-lap feature event, It took three attempts to get a single lap scored. Jerod Ballhagen led the first lap before Adam Shelman took the top spot on lap two. Kip Siems moved ahead of Shelman on lap five, while Dallon Murty worked the high line from tenth. The caution came out on lap seven for Brandon Lewis in turn four. Murty used the high side on the restart to get by Siems and pull away from the field to claim victory. Nineth place started, and Jeff Aikey took second place following the restart on lap seven. Twelfth-place starter Troy Cordes came home in third, Siems fell back to fourth, and Brennen Chipp came from eleventh to finish fifth.

Thornton and Gaylord Take Blackberry Brandy Brawl Victories

With Marshalltown Speedway having a scheduled Friday Night off because of a Junior High and High School Rodeo, the plan was to adventure somewhere else for some racing action. The Karl Chevrolet of Stuart International Speedway scheduled a Friday Night race called the Blackberry Brandy Brawl in honor of friend and supporter of the track.

The night was in the honor of Chris "Thorny" Thornburg, who paseed away in February, Thorny was a huge help to the Josh Gilman Racing team over the years, his family and friends placed his ashes on the start/finish line and victory lane before the Modified feature. he and his dad were also in the movie Fever Heat.  Over 30 sponsors added money to the drivers purse.

A total of one hundred twenty-two cars sign in for the Friday Night Lights racing at Stuart. Exciting racing all night along with two, three and four wide racing. Hobby Stocks put on the most exciting race running four wide for 2nd place several laps. Final checkered flag waived at 11:10p.m.

First feature of the night was the Karl Chevrolet IMCA Northern Sport Mods 20 lap feature event. Mitchell Morris grab the top spot and was trailed by Garrett Nelson, Mike Dullard and Willy Kirk early. Morris was able to pull away until lap traffic was able to slow him down allowing Kirk and Tyler Inman to catch him. Inman managed to take the race lead away and appeared to come across the start finish line first by .063 seconds, however he was disqualified in post race tech inspection for the rev limiter. That gave the win back over to Mitchell Morris. Kirk finished second, Cam Reimers was third, Jake Sachau in fourth and Brayton Carter came home fifth.

Luke Ramsey led the first six laps of the Afforable Quality Exteriors and Diversifeld Towing & Recovery IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature event. Casey Woken took over the top spot as the battled heated up behind him. Woken went on to take the feature win ahead of Ramsey, eleventh place starter Buck Schafroth, Van Genderen and tenth place starter Michael Jaennette. The win pocked Woken $750 to win, as he was already qualified for the B&B Chassis All Star Invitational.

Tripp Gaylord grabbed the race lead early in the VIP Contractors IMCA Modifieds 25 lap $2,083 to win feature event. The caution came out on lap two for Tom Berry Jr slowing after making contact with Chase Rudolf. On the restart, Gaylord held off some challenges from Tim Ward before pulling away and looking to be heading on to the race win until another caution came out on lap 20 for Dan Wagner spinning in turn three and four. Gaylord managed to fend off Ward and Dallon Murty to go on and take the feature win. Murty came from tenth to finish second. Ward, Todd Shute and Jeremy Thornton round out the top five.

After the field of twenty-eight was dwindled down to only 24, it was now time for the Malvern Bank SLMR Late Models 25 lap feature event. Daniel Hilsabeck led the first lap but shortly after the caution came out for a 4-car pileup in turn four. Dave Eckrich and Brian Kosiski's night came to and end as Corey Zeitner and Darrel  DeFrance continued with minimal damage. Hilsabeck got a great restart and started to check out until lap traffic slowed him down allowing Tad Pospisil, Dyland Thornton and Blair Nothdurft to reel him in. The caution came out again on lap 15 when JC Wyman and Andrew Kosiski, while battling for third both spun in turn one and two. Hilsabeck and Thronton battled for the lead on the restart. Hilsabeck however spin on lap seventeen bringing out the caution. Thornton inherited the lead and lead the remaining eight laps to pick up the $3,000 to win. Nothdurft tppl second, Pospisil finished third, Jason Hahne in fourth and thirteenth place starter Chad Hollady in fifth.

Rusty Bates jumped out to the race lead from his pole position in the Rick's Towing IMCA Hobby Stocks 18 lap feature event. The only race caution came out on lap two when Travis Cavin spun battling for second with Seth Butler in turn two. Garrett Croy had know where to go and made contact with Cavin, ending both of their nights. Bates continued to lead holding of Buddy Haidsiak and Butler on the restart. Meanwhile the battles behind Bates was getting exciting as they were going four wide for positions for several laps before it settled down. Eric Stanton worked his way from tenth and grabbed the top spot away from Bates on lap seven. Stanton went on to lead the remaining laps to take the feature win. Butler, Skylar Pruitt, Calvin Dhondt and Bates finished second through fifth respectively.

Final feature of the night was the Outlaw Mini Mods 15 lap feature event and they had a little trouble getting a lap in. The first caution saw Bobby Daniels spin in turn two then on the restart Landon Elliott was spun by Judd Roberts in turn two. Finally when the race got going, Justin Winkler took the race lead for the first three laps. Chase Daniels worked his way from eighth to take the top spot away on lap four. Chase Daniels took the feature win. Lucas Daniels finished second, Cameron Burkman in third, Winkler fell back to fourth and Kaden Rice in fifth,

Avila, Dhondt, Mueller and Bunch Win Close Ones on UAW 893 Cliff Chambers Memorial

Finally, after two consecutive rainouts, the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway roared back to life with the Local UAW 893 Cliff Chambers Memorial. It was also the 60th Annual Weekly Points Season Opener. Cliff Chambers was a former promoter and flagman, he helped put Marshalltown Speedway on the map. It is honestly amazing to begin the weekly racing for track points with the Cliff Chambers Memorial and end with the Larry Wollam Memorial Season Championships in August.

It was a beautiful Friday night to kick off the 2024 Weekly Racing action as one hundred and fifty-eight cars signed in to tame the high banked quarter-mile dirt oval, including one NASCAR driver. NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Matt Crafton decided to bring his Modified to the Marshalltown Speedway.

The racing action was exciting all night long as they went two and three wide through out the night and tried to squeeze out four and five wide through out the night. Fertlizer Equipment Specialists and Brian Doyle Farms track prep crew did an amazing job getting the racing surface in tip-top shape. The final checkered flag was waived at 11:10 p.m.

The first feature of the night was the IMCA Stars Mod Lites presented by Knight Sanitation 15 Lapper. Bryan Zehm led the opening lap, fending off pressure from Jon Padilla, but then the only race caution came out for Cody Heck spins in turn two. Padilla was able to take the top spot away on the restart and pulled away to take the feature win. Alex Eischeid came home second, Zehm in third, Cory Sonner in fourth, and Joe Glick in fifth.

Rugged Radios IMCA Friesen Performance Northern Sport Mods was next on the speedway for their 20-lap feature event. Matt Avila out wrestled Kyle Olson for the race lead early, but the caution came out on lap two for back-stretch cone getting knocked on the race track. Avila had to contend with Olson, Logan Anderson, and Taylor Kuehl on the restart but held them off. Avila looked smooth out front as the others continued to battle behind him for position. The caution came again on lap 11 when Zander Keeland spun in turn two, and again on the restart for Camdan Vincent. Avila held off Anderson and Cam Reimers on the restart; Reimers grabbed second and started to battle with Avila for the race lead. Avila held off Reimers, even after a caution on lap 18, to take the feature win. Reimers, Anderson, tenth-place starter Brayton Carter, and Kuehl rounded out the top five.

Solomon Bennett jumped out to the early race lead in Cappy's Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Hobby Stocks 20-lap feature event. Bennett held off challenges from Ben Newhouse and Eric Stanton until the caution came out on lap four when "Flyin' Cop" Logan Andrews lost his front bumper and nose cone in turn three. Bennett remained in command until twelfth-place starter "Flyin' Fireman" Calvin Dhondt took the top spot away. Dhondt was followed by Stanton, and those two battled it out for the race lead. In the last half of the race, Dhondt and Stanton ran side-by-side every lap. Dhondt took the win by a margin of .008 seconds over Stanton. Bradly Graham worked his way into third, Curt Reed was in fourth, and Bennett fell back to fifth.

Tyler Pickett and "Jammin'" Jimmy Gustin led the field to green in the Drury Automotive and Truck Repair IMCA Stock Cars 20-lap feature event. Gustin took the top spot early, as Pickett was passed by Jeff Mueller and Buck Schafroth. The caution came out on lap five for debris in turn one. Gustin received heavy pressure to restart Mueller and Schafroth. Mueller grabbed the top spot on lap 7, Schafroth led lap eight, Gustin again on lap nine, and then Mueller took the top spot on lap 10. The caution came out when Jay Schmidt spun on the top side of turn three. Mueller held off Schafroth and Gustin until one more race caution on lap 17 for Pickett off turn three. Mueller held on to take the feature win ahead of Schafroth, Gustin, Casey Woken, and David Brandies.

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Matt Crafton took the early race lead in the 20-lap Tire Demon by Love Tap IMCA Modifieds presented by Friesen Performance. Crafton looked rather impressive out front until a caution came out on lap six for Brian Eppert in turn two. On the restart, unfortunately, a ten-car pileup happened. Tripp Gaylord took the top spot away from Crafton on the following restart, but another caution came out on laps seven and eight. Gaylord saw a heated battle behind him but remained out front, only to see a caution on lap 12 for Riley Simmons in turn two. Gaylord was determined to not be denied, as he went on to take the feature win. Jake McBirnie finished second, Jonathon Logue in third, Drew Janssen in fourth, and Ronn Lauritzen in fifth.

The final feature of the night was the Hy-Vee of Marshalltown IMCA Sport Compacts 15-lap feature. David Kimmel led the first five laps before tenth-place starter Cristian Grady took the top spot away on lap six. Shortly after the caution came out for Jeremy Williams in turn four, Grady held off eleventh-place starter Mitchell Bunch and Kimmel on the restart, but three laps later, another caution was issued on lap nine for Kimmel in turn one. Bunch stole the lead away from Grady on the restart and went on to take the feature win. Grady, John Gill, Nolan Tuttle, and twelfth-place starter Michael Gardner rounded out the top five.
