Sunday night brought the return of Speedway Motors IMCA Weekly Racing back to Sports Park Raceway for the first time since 2019; it also brought the return to Sunday night racing after a couple of years trying different nights. The hope for track owner and promoter Jeff Frevert, operations manager Sarah Stewart and track prep manager Brandon Toftee by doing that is to have continued growth and great racing every night.

A total of ninety-six cars signed in to check out the newly configured Sports Park Raceway on Sunday, and many, I would say, were rather impressed with the racing action. The car count may have been low in a few classes, but the racing was still great all through the night. Great job by Brandon and Jeff for creating a great racing surface, Sarah for keeping things rolling, and Rodney Tomlinson on the horn with the PA announcing. All the night got started with hot laps at 5 p.m., and the races were over shortly after 8:30 p.m., not bad. So if you are on the fence about making the trip to Sports Park Raceway, don't be, and make at least one trip to support them.

The first feature of the night was the 10-lap Matt's Tyre Service IMCA Sport Compacts feature. Levi Volkert led the first lap, but the hot shoe from Guthrie Centre, Rece Hayes, took the top spot away on lap two. The only caution came out on lap three when Alyssa Thies came to a stop at the top of turn four. Hayes fended off Volkert and tenth-place starter Tyler Fiebelkorn on the restart. Volkert faded back, but Fiebelkorn tried to apply constant pressure on Hayes. There were parts of the track where Fiebelkorn was faster, but there were parts where Hayes was faster. Hayes hung on to capture the victory. Fiebelkorn settled for a runner-up finish, Charles Prime took third, and Kaytee DeVries was in fourth. and Brooke Osler in fifth.

Pickett Salvage Vintage Cars was up next for their 10-lap feature event. There were five Vintage Street Stocks and two Vintage Super Stocks; however, one of the Super Stocks broke in hot laps, so feature time they ran together. Dino Rodish led all ten laps in the feature event and won the Super Stocks; meanwhile, Todd Jansonius ran second and won the Street Stocks. Following Jansonius was Mark Chance, Rex Jansonius, Brent McClendon and Logan Frazier.

Culver's of Fort Dodge and Carroll 4.6L Crown Vics 12 lap feature saw Nick Sawdy grab the race lead as the Hogans : Nick and Nate battled out behind him. Sawdy looked smooth out front, and the only caution came out on lap five when Brandon Erpelding slowed at the top of turn four with a flat tire. Sawdy went on to take the win with Nick Hogan in second, Nate Hogan in third, Cyle Marsh in fourth and Cody Fogelman in fifth.

It was time to do the Wild Thing, as the Pickett Salvage IMCA Hobby Stocks 15-lap feature was next out on the speedway. Roger Haupt jumped out to the race lead and held on to the top spot through five cautions. The first caution on lap one for Brad Gilliland off the top of turn three; the next one on lap two for debris in turn four. Lap seven had a caution for Gilliland spinning in turn four; lap nine for Adam Tiernan going off the top of turn four. The following restart on lap nine saw the red flag when Jeremiah Goughnour barrel-rolled off the top of turn three; he climbed from the car okay. Will Smith worked his way from seventh and powered on the final restart to capture the victory. Dan Hanselman took second; Drew Barglof was third. twenty-second place starter Brett Maasdam came home fourth and fourteenth place starter Jacob Monson was fifth.

Mike Smith jumped out to a sizable lead in the White Transfer & Storage IMCA Northern Sport Mods 15-lap feature event. Smith had a full straightaway lead prior to the caution coming out on lap eleven. The first caution was for Drew Fett sliding off the top of turns three and four, and the initial restart was called back. Smith went on to take the feature win ahead of Alec Fett, ninth-place starter Rocky Caudle, Jeremiah Reed, and Brayden Shepherd.

Troy Jerovetz and Ryan Roath led the field to green in the Marsh Concrete IMCA Stock Cars 15-lap feature event. Jerovetz lived up to the nickname of "The General" as he took the race lead, but shortly after lap one was scored, the caution came out when Tyler Nelsen and Josh Monthei spun in turn four. Jerovetz continued to lead the way until the final caution on lap five for John Ades, Daniel Ayers, and Nelsen spinning in turn three. Scott Olson powered on the restart and never looked back, going on to take the feature win. Jerovetz, Roath, ninth-place starter Johnathon Logue, and tenth-place starter Tyler Pickett rounded out the top five.

Final full field feature was the United Plant Services IMCA Modifieds 15 lap feature event. Chaz Baca outwrestled Jeff James on the restart and look as strong as he did Friday night in Marshalltown and Saturday in Boone. Baca would go on and win for third night in a row and won by a margin of 1.823 seconds. Jeremy Mills ran second the entire way, Trevor Fitz got into third on lap three and finish there. Matthew Looft and Brad Bergren finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Only one IMCA Late Model signed in to compete, and that was Dan Demey from Denison. During the heat and feature, Dino Rodish would bring his Super Stock Vintage out to give him somebody to play with. The IMCA Late Model guys always complain about having somewhere to race and only one showing up; now I know there was at least another one planning to come, and that was Jenna Johnson from Mitchellville, but they had truck trouble. I promise you will love racing there in Fort Dodge.

Next week, Sunday, June 7th, at Sports Park Raceway presented by Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota, it will be the United Plant Services IMCA Modifieds Fast Shaft All-Star Invitational featuring the Western Iowa Area Modified Series $1,500 to win. I'm unsure how many days I will be able to make it to Independence Motor Speedway presented by Scott Webb Concrete in Independence, Iowa, because of conflicts like doing PA announcing on Monday for Marshalltown High School softball games. It was easy decision to drive up for the IMCA Summer Nationals Prelude, sponsored by Peoples Company—Travis Smock.

The only difference between the Prelude and the IMCA Summer Nationals is that the Pro Late Models presented by Nutrien and Rooster Auto Sales Crown Vics also competed. A total of one hundred and fifty-eight cars signed in the pits to tame the 3/8 mile semi-banked dirt oval located on the Buchanan County Fairgrounds. The final checkered flag waived at 11:32 pm. It meant by the time I got back to the car, I arrived back home at around 1:15 am.

The first feature of the night was the Rooster Auto Sales Crown Vics' 14-lap feature event. Michael LaMar jumped out to the race lead and pulled away for a brief moment, but once lap traffic began to close in, so did Jacob Everts. Unfortunately, the only caution ended up being a red flag on lap eight when LaMar made contact with the lap car of Elisabeth Vanous. LaMar barrel-rolled over the top side of turn one but climbed from the car. Everts held off Rob Culbertson and Derrick Dean on the restart and went on to lead the remaining 6 laps and capture the victory. Culbertson, Dean, Nick Glynn and Cody Bergmeier round out the top five.

Jordan Hicks and Will Wolf led the field to the green flag in the Pat's Auto Salvage IMCA Northern Sport Mods 20-lap feature. Hicks grabbed the top spot with Wolf remaining in tow, but shortly after lap two was scored, the cautions started waving. The first one was for Blake Driscol in turn four, and then on the restart, Aiden Gelner was in turn four. A lap later, a rare sight to see is Brayton Carter looping it around the exiting turn two. Hicks continued to lead the way fending off Willy Kirk and Wolf on the restart but once again the caution waived on lap seven when TJ Hampton spins in turn two. Hicks seemed to be determined to take the victory, but caution came out again on lap ten when Hampton spun again, this time in turn four. Kirk took the race lead away from Hicks on this restart and shortly after the caution came out when Curt Smeins was spun by Brandon Jacoby on the front stretch. Kirk had a great restart and appeared to be heading on to the comfortable win, only to see the caution come out on lap 19 for Harrison Horn's spin in turn four. Kirk held on to take the feature win ahead of eleventh-place starter Devyn Peterson, Carter, Hicks, and fifteenth-place starter Jackson Carey.

Before a lap was completed in the Christie Door Company IMCA Stock Cars 20-lap feature event, the caution came out for Dru Kueker spinning the Rowdee Van Genderen. Rhome, Texas driver Jeffrey Abbey took the top spot early, followed by Chris Luloff on lap two and then Kaden Reynolds. Nobody made a major challenge on Abbey, allowing him to take the feature win. Reynolds, formerly from Iowa, now in Norfolk, Nebraska, came home second. Tony Olson took third, Cayden Carter was fourth, and Luloff fell back to fifth.

Cue Rentals by Tarpy IMCA Sport Compacts' 15-lap feature event saw Drew Stanek lead the first two laps before Dan Schmidt worked his way by. Schmidt checked out and appeared to be heading on to the win. Meanwhile, Michael Gardner, Friday Night winner in Marshalltown, worked his way up from twelfth place. The only race caution came out when Stephen Randall spun in turn one. Schmidt now would have a challenge as Gardner worked his way to second using the bottom side. Gardner grabbed the race lead on the white flag lap and went on to take the feature win. Schmidt finished second, Gilbert Aldape was third, Stanek was in fourth and Aaron Swearingen was in fifth.

In the Waterloo Auto Parts IMCA Modifieds 20-lap feature event, Tim Ward outwrestled Wisconsin's Konner Wilinski. Ward checked out until the caution came out on lap five when Ethan Krall spun off the top exiting turn four. Ward got a great restart and pulled away again until cautions on lap 13 for Josh Fisher in turn four and lap 18 for Krall hitting the wall of the backstretch. Ward was determined to not be denied as he claimed the victory ahead of Wilinski, eighth place starer Kollin Hibdon, seventh place starter Troy Cordes and Cayden Carter.

CJ Horn took the top spot early in the Nutrien Ag Solutions Pro Late Model 20-lap feature event, while J.D. Auringer and Brennen Chipp battled. The caution came out shortly after lap one was scored when Tyler Sommerlot lost a left rear wheel in turn three. Two laps later, the caution came out again when Curt Martin spun in turn four, forcing Ben Lerch, Marcus Orr, and Kelly Pestka to spin as well. Horn continued to lead until Kollin Hibdon, driving the Rick Dralle #77, worked his way from thirteenth place. Hibdon took second away on lap 13 and took the lead away from Horn on lap 16. Hibdon went on to capture the feature win. Horn, Auringer, Luke Pestka, and Chipp rounded out the top five.

The final feature of the night was the Performance Bodies IMCA Hobby Stocks 16-lap feature. Zach McNeese led the first lap before Jeremiah Wilson took it away. The caution came out shortly after when Michael Steadman and Leah Wroten spun in turn two. Wilson got a great restart and pulled away and was only slowed when the caution came out on lap 14 when McNeese was spun in turn four by Brett Vanous. Wilson held on to take the feature win; McNeese was granted second and hung on. Jaice Tuttle finished third, Brad Graham was fourth, and Joren Fisher finished fifth.

Next up at the Independence Motor Speedway is the IMCA Summer Nationals. It starts on Sunday with an open practice beginning at 7pm, followed by optional qualifying at 7pm for all classes. Mother Nature did not play nice to the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway back in March when the speedway was scheduled to have the Southern Iowa Frost Out, and it looked as if she was not going to this time. Speedway officials, Mike Van Genderen, the Davis County Fairboard, and the SLMR Series made a quick decision to allow drying and, with better weather on Memorial Day, to postpone the Spilman Auto Parts and Nutrien Ag Solutions Special to then.

With that, I quickly added it to my weekend of racing events to attend over the Memorial Day weekend; Friday I was at Marshalltown Speedway flagging the Corn Belt Clash; Saturday I was watching the races in Boone and wrote a blog recap for that; Sunday I was at Brooklyn Raceway playing race director and head scorer. So I managed to make it four straight nights of racing, with the weather for the last one being amazing. Mike and Rowdee did a great job with the racing surface to get it ready. for the first race in Bloomfield this year.

The night was sponsored by Spilman Auto Parts and Nutrien Ag Solutions. There were eighty-five entries, including 17 Malvern Bank SLMR late models, which were competing for the third straight night, Saturday night at Maquoketa and Sunday night in Dubuque. IMCA Modifieds got added to the racing programme thanks to M3 Fab, Hamilton Produce, Car Quest of Bloomfield & Ottumwa, Christensen 5 LLC and Blaine Bryant. The racing action was exciting all night long; there were fireworks after the races. The final chequered flag was at 9:46pm. Meaning by the time I got back to my car and made a pit stop, I arrived home around 12:30pm.

The first feature of the night was the IMCA Northern Sport Mods for their 18-lap feature event, but before a single lap was fully scored, the caution came out when Preston Bright, BJ Charlson and Benjamin Block were on the front stretch. Cody Agee grabbed the lead from the drop of the green flag and had Cole Gillenwater and Will Wolf in tow behind until Brayton Carter entered in the mix on lap nine. The caution came out shortly after lap ten was scored when Charlie Rindom and Daltin Doud spun in turns three and four. Carter took the lead away on the restart and then was only slowed by the final caution on lap 13 when Brian Hol spun in turn two. Carter went on to take the win; Brandon Dale came from tenth to finish second. Wolf was third; twelfth-place starter Dylan VanWyk came home in fourth, and Agee fell back to fifth. Heat winners were Dale, Van Wyk, and Wolf.

The Malvern Bank Super Late Model Racing (SLMR) East Series was up next for their 25-lap feature on the semi-banked 3/8 mile oval, presented by Spilman Auto Parts and Nutrien Ag Solutions. This was the 27th different track in Iowa to host an SLMR event and the first late model event held in Bloomfield since 2007. Jesse Sobbing and Blair Nothdurft lead the field to the green flag; Nothdurft powered his way to the early race lead using the top side. Sobbing ran second for a while and refused to go away as Chad Simpson and Dylan Thornton worked their way to the front. Sobbing was able to get by Nothdurft on lap 9, and Simpson got by Nothdurft for second on lap ten. Simpson managed to use both lines to his advantage as he would make the move and get by Sobbing with 10 laps to go. Dylan Thornton entered and began to battle with Sobbing. Simpson ran away to claim his first win of the season, his 9th career SLMR Series victory, and went home with a total payday of $5,750. The feature win was worth $3,000, and he captured the $2,750 Skyline Materials Lucky 6th Place starter bonus. Finishing behind Simpson in the 25 caution-free laps were Sobbing, Thornton, Northdurft, and Jason Hahne. Simpson was the Hoosier Tire Hard Charger. Keyser Manufacturing's top qualifier overall and in group 1 was Nothdurft with an 18.313-second lap; Sobbing was quickest in group 2 with an 18.830-second lap. Jacob Hobscheidt and Derrick Stewart won the heat races.

Jason See jumped out to the race lead in the IMCA Stock Cars 18-lap feature and got a little separation before Wisconsin's Tyler Wilson reeled him back in just as Derrick Agee was working his way to third. The caution came out one time on lap five when Jathan Fuller was in turn four. See lead until lap 11, when Agee pounced and was able to take the lead away. Agee went into cruise control and captured the victory. Wilson finished second, See fell back to third, Dustin Griffiths came across in fourth, and Corey Strothman was fifth. Wilson, Strothman and John Oliver Jr. captured heat wins.

In the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15-lap feature event, it was Garrett Porter grabbing the race lead from his outside front-row starting spot. Porter's lead would be short-lived as Tom Killen Jr. powered his way by on lap two. The caution came out shortly after lap two was scored when Briar Kriegel and Brayden Wood spun in turn one, knocking an infield tire out on the track. Killen got a great restart and went on to capture the win over Thunder and Lightning, Brett Maasdam, and Corey VanDerWilt. Keaton Gorden and Porter rounded out the top five. Gorden and Brad Graham took the heat race wins.

The final feature of the night was the IMCA Modifieds 18-lap feature event presented by M3 Fab, Car Quest of Bloomfield & Ottumwa, Christensen 5 LLC, Hamilton Produce and Blaine Bryant. Only seven cars showed up and only one yellow on lap two. It was Winnemucca, Nevada, racer Cory Sample leading from start to finish. Jace Whitt, Brandon Banks, Dakota Simmons and Colton Nelson rounded out the top five. Heat race went to Simmons.

The next racing event at the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway is during the 2026 Davis County Fair. There will be two nights of racing, Thursday July 16th and Friday July 17th. Thursday, July 16th will have IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, and IMCA Hobby Stocks; Friday, July 17th will have IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks, and IMCA Sport Compacts. Hot laps at 7p, racing to follow both nights. More information will be released on the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway Facebook.

The next Malvern Bank Super Late Model Racing (SLMR) Series event is this Friday, May 29th, at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas; that will be a west series event. The next East Series race will be on Thursday, June 4th, at the Mississippi Thunderspeedway in Fountain City, Wisconsin, before Friday, June 5th, and Saturday, June 6th, at the Mississippi Thunder. They are dual races.
