Shute and Watson Win Thrillers during Motown's Season Opener

Well if you listened to the weather forecast and looked at the radar many would have thought their is no chance the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway was going to get the 2023 Track Points underway on Friday Night. Only light little misting rain came down and all signs lead to the Marshalltown Speedway hosting the Ryan Ashton "Still Not Racing" Season Opener.

As the temperatures dipped and a strong northly wind came in after the cold front move through the racing action heated up on the track as several finish came down to the checkered flag. One hundred and eighteen cars signed into tame the high bank quarter mile on the Final Friday Night of April. The final checkered flag came out just after 10pm.

First feature of the night was Rugged Radios IMCA Friesen Performance Sport Mods 20 lap feature event. Jenae Gustin out dueled Kyle Olson for the race lead early. Gustin held off Olson and started to get a little separation until Olson began to reel her back in just prior to the caution on lap 11 for Jessiah Taylor in turn four. Olson was able to take the top spot away from Gustin on the restart. Olson held on to take the win, Travis Peterson grabbed second away from Gustin, who fell back to third as a tire was beginning to go down. Braden Richards was fourth and Kaylin Lopez was fifth.

Austin Kaplan took the early race lead in the Drury Automotive & Truck Repair IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature event. Kaplan fended off several challenges from Michael Jaennette before pulling away. The only caution came out on lap ten for Jeff Byers Jr in turn four. Kaplan had to contend with Dan Mackenthun and Jaennette on the restart but he held them off and took the feature win. Mackenthun finished second with Steve Meyer, Dave Atcher and Jaennette finishing third through fifth respectively.

The Knight Sanitation IMCA Mod Lites 20 lap feature event was next up and before a single lap was scored the caution came out when Riley Clem, Randy Bryan and Darrick Knutsen spun in turn four. Jon Padilla jumped out to the race lead holding off Josh May and Joel Huggins when the race got rolling and it. Padilla started to pull away until a caution on lap seven came out when Austin Glick spun in turn two. Padilla hung on to claim the feature win ahead of Clem, May, Jason Toppenberg and Bryan Zehm.

Dallon Murty wrestled the lead early in the Tire Demon by Love Tap IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature from pole sitter Dustin Kroening. The caution came out on lap two when Johnathon Logue spun in turn four. Murty held off Kroening and Shute initial before Shute began to trail Murty. Shute made several attempts to get by Murty but failed until a caution on lap 18 when Jacob Murray spun in turn four forcing a green-white-checkered finish. Murty held off Shute until the white flag lap as Shute was able to use his experience to out duel the youngster back to the start finish line. Shute took the win by .190 seconds over Murty. Jake McBirnie worked his way to third, Jerry Flippo was fourth and Jesse Dennis was fifth.

Next on the speedway was the "Wild Thing" IMCA Hobby Stocks presented by Big 8 Tyre Center for 20 laps. Calvin Dhondt started fifth and by the end of lap one he found himself in the top spot. Dhondt's lead was short lived though as some contact with Tom Killen Jr sent him spinning in turn one resulting in the caution coming out. Killen leading did not last long as on the restart, "The Mayor" John Watson was able to take the top spot away. Watson never gave up the top spot the remainder of the race, as he went on to take the feature win by .023 seconds. Watson did have to fend off challenges from twelfth place starter Eric Knutson for the last half of the race. Tom Killen Jr came home third, "The Lynnville Lightning" Corey VanDerWilt finished courth and Luke Ramsey was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the 15 lap Hy-Vee IMCA Sport Compacts feature event. "Cole Trickle" John Patterson and "Crash Dummy" Larry Werner led the field to the green flag but it was Omaha, Nebraska's Anthony Clark leading at the end of lap one. Blake Driscol was able to take the lead away on lap three and drove off to the victory as the rest of the field fought it out behind him. "Ricky Bobby" Mitchell Bunch took a distant second place finish. Terry Bickford grabbed third, Curtis Masterson came home fourth and Kolby Sabin held on-to fifth with some mechanical issues.

Ebert Takes a win on Night 1 of the USMTS Spring Classic

Mother Nature did not play nice the week before as there was no racing for the Foxman, this week I was determined to go racing so the decision was simple go to the Hamilton County Speedway for the 13th Annual USMTS Spring Classic Night one. I was not disappointed with my decision even though the final checkered flag fell at 10:28p meaning after the walk back to the car, drive home, I rolled in the house right at midnight.

Forty-Eight Summit United States Modified Touring Series National Championship presented by RacinDirt Modifieds checked in for night 1 of the Spring Classic to claim the top prize of $3,000 to win. Ten Seneca Foundry USRA Stock Cars, 13 Stein Heating & Cooling USRA B-Mods and 12 Diamond in the Rough USRA Hobby Stocks also showed up for some Thursday Night Thunder Summit Racing Equipment USRA Weekly Racing Series action at the historic half mile.

As Harry Hogge would say to Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder.......No, no, he didn't slam you, he didn't bump you, he didn't nudge you.......he rubbed you. And rubbin, son, is racin'. That famous movie quote would live to be true when the USMTS Modifieds came out as they provided some fantastic racing to the fans in attendance or the ones watching on RacinDirt. You could find any seat you wanted last night so get out support them the next Two Nights.

First feature of the Night was the Diamond in the Rough USRA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event. Jeremy Crimmins grabbed the race lead early fending off Danny Ayers and Bryce Sommerfeld early. Crimmins would again be challenged by Ayers on lap five, Crimmins hugged the bottom while Ayers was riding the top side. Ayers was able to take the lead away. Ayers looked to be heading on to the win despite several challenges from Crimmins until the only race caution came out on lap 12 when Zack Smidt spun in turn two. Crimmins was able to take the lead back on the restart but Ayers refused to go away. Ayers made the pass on Crimmins on the final lap, to claim the victory. Crimmins was second, Chris Hovden came home third, Kolby Goepel was fourth and Sommerfeld was fifth.

Up next was the Summit Racing Equipment USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt 30 lap feature event. Zack Vanderbeek and Dan Ebert led the field to the green flag of the rugged warriors. Ebert was able to beat Vanderbeek back to the line to claim the top spot. The first caution came out on lap two when Brandon Givens spun in turn two, Jason Hughes also spun off the top to avoid. Ebert continued to lead the way fending of Vanderbeek and Rodney Sanders on the restart. Jim Chisholm and Tom Berry Jr worked their way into second and third. The was some great two, three and four wide battles through out the early going.

Ebert checked out but just as he was approaching lap traffic, Berry was able to reel him in and challenge for the race lead. Berry attempted to get by on lap 23 but was unsuccessful. Berry was able to take over the top spot on lap 24 from Ebert. Berry looked to be heading on to the win until a caution came out on lap 26 for Jake O'Neil in turn four. Berry continued to lead but another caution came out on lap 28 for Tyler Wolff spun after hitting an infield tire in turn four. One more caution set up a green-white-checkered finish on lap 29 when Hughes spun in turn four.

Berry led the white flag lap but on the last lap Ebert was able to steal the lead away from Berry after the two made contact in turns one and two. Berry ran out of room and made contact with the wall exiting turn two allowing Ebert to go and take the win. Sanders, Chisholm, Alex Williamson and Dereck Ramirez round out the top five. Jacob Bleess, Tim Ward, Terry Phillips, Will Krup and Jeremy Nelson finished sixth through tenth. Ramirez was the FK Rod Ends Hard Charger moving from 19th to fifth.

Hunter Longnecker took the early race lead in the Stein Heating & Cooling USRA B-Mods 16 lap feature event. Ty Griffith took the top spot away on lap three. The first caution came out on lap four when Joe Chisholm spun Longnecker, Chisholm sent to the tail and Longnecker regain second. Griffith got a great restart meanwhile Ben Moudry got by Longnecker. The caution came out again on lap seven when Trevor Fecht dumped oil on the race track. Griffith had a fantastic restart and started to pull away. One more caution came out on lap 12 when Jerid Ratzke slowed in turn two. Griffith was not going to be denied as he went on to take the feature win ahead of Chisholm, Brandon Hare, Bryer McCoy and Josh Appel.

Final feature of the night was the Seneca Foundry USRA Stock Cars 18 lap feature event. Myles Michehl led the first lap but the caution came out shortly after when John Ades and Levi Vander Weide spun in turn four. On the restart, Granada, Minnesota's Derek Green took the top spot away from Michehl. Green started to pull away only to see the caution come out when Brandon Mannhardt spun in turn three. Green got a great restart and never looked back, going on to claim the twin checkers. Bill Crimmins finished second, Andrew Borchardt was third, Reid Keller was fourth and Michehl fell back to fifth.

Abbey Reigns King of the Highbanks

It was back at it for the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway as the King of the Highbanks held its Iowa Air Barrier Championship Night for the IMCA Stock Cars. IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods and IMCA Hobby Stocks return to tame the quarter mile again. Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks and IMCA Sport Compacts joined the fun.

One Hundred seventy cars filled in the pit area for night 2. Racing action was intense at times as the race track added character and an extra challenge to the drivers, but only a few drivers could end the night and go home winners.

First feature of the night was the Rugged Radios and Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods 20 lap feature event. Before a lap was scored Steve McLaughlin and Josalyn Elmquist spun in turn one. On the following restart, Logan Anderson driving Herbie the Lovebug grabbed the race lead fending off hometown favorite Jenae Gustin. Another caution came out on lap two but Anderson maintain the lead until lap ten when Brayotn Carter took the top spot away. Anderson then was challenged by Gustin and Tony Olson but managed to hold them off through a pair of cautions on lap 18. Carter took the feature win and $500 meanwhile Logan Anderson finished second. Tenth place starter Tony Olson finished third, Gustin was fourth and Cole Fenske was fifth.

Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Hobby Stocks 20 lap main event was next on the speedway. John Watson nicknamed The Mayer led first five laps for seventh place starter Eric Knutson was able to battle Watson for the lead. Knutson was able to take command on lap six however Watson refused to go away and applied severe pressure to Knutson. Knutson held off Watson and Calvin Dhondt to take the feature win. Dhondt came across the line in second but disqualified in post race tech for a shock issue. Minnesota's Brandon Bombardo came from sixth to finish as runner-up. Eighth place starter Dylan Nelson, Watson and Luke Ramsey round out the top five.

Kolby Sabin led from start to finish in the Hy-Vee IMCA Sport Compacts 15 lap feature event and not even the caution on lap four that saw several cars get together in turn two would deny him. Sabin cruised on to the easy win. Terry Bickford chased Sabin but settled for second. Minnesota's Marschall Robinson took third after getting by Matt Miller, Miller finished fourth. Eleventh place starter Curtis Masterson came home in fifth.

Next up was the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks 20 laps feature event. Brandon Toftee took early lead from the pole. Toftee fend off challenges from Brandon Cox and Jeff Johnson through the early caution on lap two and the caution on lap nine. Johnson made the low side work and took the top spot away from Toftee on lap 14. Johnson pulled away to take the first series win of 2023. Cox was able to grab second. Toftee was third, Shawn Cooney was fourth and Jared Myers was fifth. Next race for the trucks is Wednesday at Stuart, you can check out every thing about the trucks at DirtTruckSeries.com or RaceHardGetDirty.com.

In the 25 lap Tire Demon by Love Tap and Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds feature event, Jimmy Gustin grabbed the lead early and appeared to be on his way to victory. On lap eighteen, a hole low in corner one sent Gustin bouncing allowing twelfth place starter Tim Ward to take the lead away. After Ward got out front, he pulled away and to score his third win Motown this year and his ninth win of 2023. Gustin held on for second, Jeremy Mills took third, Jake McBirnie came home fourth with Johnathon Logue in fifth.

Final feature of the night was the 50 lap Iowa Air Barrier Championship feature for the Drury Automotive and Truck Repair IMCA Stock Cars. After two sets of heats with passing points on Thursday locking in the top ten it meant fourteen more drivers was need for the feature so they ran last chance heats and last chance b features to set the field down to 24 out of the 58 cars.

Marshall, Minnesota's Jim Horejsi took the lead early from the outside front row starting spot at the drop of the green flag. Dallon Murty and Dylan Thornton challenged Horejsi for the lead. Thornton took the lead away and fended off Murty. The first caution came out on lap 11 when Nick Buckrama and Buck Schafroth get together in turn four. Another caution on lap 20 came out when Kyle Brown spun in turn two meanwhile Thornton continued to lead the way. Seventh place starter Jeffrey Abbey from Comanche, Texas worked his way into second and began to challenge Thornton. Abbey took the lead away on lap 28 and started to get a little separation until two late race cautions on lap 43 and 47. Abbey was not to be denied as he Reigned as the King of the Highbanks taking the $5,000 prize back to Texas and automatically qualifying for the  B&B Chassis All-Star Invitational at Super Nationals. Thornton came home as the runner up, Troy Jerovetz took third, Wisconsin's Tyler Wilson was fourth and Damon Murty in fifth.

Saturday Night I decided I would make my first trip to the Boone Speedway for their Annual IMCA Frostbuster event. One hundred and sixty-six cars signed into to tame Iowa's Action Track the Boone Speedway for the first time in 2023.

First feature of the night was the Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMods 20 lap feature event. Brayton Carter grabbed the top spot earlier after starting second. The first caution came out on lap two when Tommy Tanner and Tom Lathrop got together in turn two. Carter was not fazed by this caution or the one on lap 12. Carter went on to take the victory ahead of last year's winner Taylor Kuehl. Cam Reimers moved up from eleventh to finish third. Adam Armstrong started twelfth and finish fourth meanwhile thirteenth place starter Braden Richards finished fifth. Carter one the double bonus payout of $1,000 for tonight's win.

Todd Shute led the first lap of the Freisen Performance IMCA Modifieds 25 lap feature. Johnathon Logue took the top spot on lap two and maintained the lead. On lap 12, the caution came out when Ronn Lauritzen came to a stop in turn four. Logue held off Shute and Tim Ward until lap 15 when Ward took the top spot away. Ward pulled away after a second caution on lap 20 when Jeremy Mills stopped in turn four. Ward went on to claim the victory that earn a bonus of $2,000. Shute came home second, Jimmy Gustin was thrid and Jerry Flippo came from fourteenth to finish fourth. Cory Sauerman moved up from fourteenth to finish fifth.

The IMCA Stock Cars 25 lap feature event was up next on the speedway, this feature saw a total of six cautions slow the pace of the race down. Josh Daniels led the first 12 laps of the race before twelfth place starter Troy Jerovetz worked his way through the field to take the top spot away. Jerovetz went on to take the feature and become the third driver to grab the double bonus payout. Daniels finished second, Tom Berry Jr came home third, Dan Mackenthun was fourth and Jay Schmidt was fifth.

Final feature of the night was the 20 lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature event and the first caution came out before a single lap was scored, after several cars got together in turn three. Mike Smith started sixth but worked his way to the top spot on lap one. Smith never looked back going on to take the win. Curt Reed, Luke Ramsey, Chad Rigby and John Watson round out the top five.

Ward, Jerovetz, Carter, Dhondt and Driscol Takes MoTown Frostbusters

On Friday Night, I returned to the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway in a familiar role that I spend 2011 through 2015 seasons, as co-announcer with Rodney Tomlinson. It was absolute blast to be announcing races it much easier to announce races with somebody then do by yourself because you can actually take a breath. I plan to keep notes as I announce the races so this blog is a recap from my view point. Okay enough about me lets get to the racing action.

Originally there was suppose to be two nights of Frostbusters at the Marshalltown Speedway but because of the predicted below freezing temperatures Thursday Night, the decision was made to cancel and make it a one day show. It was a beautiful crisp April Night with a strong winds allowing the race to live up to the name of Frostbuster. One sixty-six cars signed in to tame the highbanks of Motown.

First feature of the night was the Rugged Radios / Friesen Performance IMCA Sport Mods 20 lap feature event for $500 to win. The first caution came out before  a single lap could be scored when several cars got together in turn four. Antigo, Wisconsin's Zachary Raab led the first lap but Alec Fett worked his way to the top spot on lap two. Brayton Carter followed Fett and began to challenge him before a caution came out on lap 7 when Taylor Kuehl blew up in turn four. Carter was able to gas bye Fett on the restart when Fett decided to block the lane of Jenae Gustin. Fett refused to go away but could not reclaim the lead as Carter went on to take the comfortable win. Fett came home in second, hometown favorite Gustin was third. Malone, Wisconsin's Timothy Warner was fourth and Dorchester, Nebraska's Trevor Noonan was fifth.

The Drury Automotive & Truck Repair IMCA Stock Cars 25 lap feature was next on to the speedway. Tom Berry Jr started sixth but by the end of lap one, he was in the top spot. The caution came out just after lap one when Austin Kaplan spun in turn four. Berry pulled away on the restart and appeared to be cruising but the caution came out when Mitchell Meier and Kaplan get together in turn three. Berry held off Nathan Ballard and Troy Jerovetz on the restart. Berry crossed the finish line in first however was disqualified in post race inspection for the right rear shock being too long. That gave the win to Jerovetz, Dan Mackenthun promoted to second. Johnathon Logue came across in fourth but was also disqualified so that move Cole Czarneski to third, Buck Schaforth to fourth and David Brandies was fifth.

Jimmy Gustin led the first lap of the 25 lap Tire Demon by Love Tap & Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds before Tim Ward took the top spot away on lap two. Ward pulled away and never looked back slicing his way through lap traffic, the only thing that slowed him was the caution lap 17 when Dylan Thornton and Richie Gustin got together in turn two. Ward powered to capture the $1,000 to win Fast Shaft All-Star Invitational Qualifier. Todd Shute grabbed second, Jimmy Gustin held on to third. Jeff Aikey and Jake McBirinie was fourth and fifth.

In the Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Hobby Stocks 20 lap feature, it was Eric Knutson grabbing the early lead but it was the "Flyin' Fireman" Calvin Dhondt working his way into second. Dhondt started to put some pressure on Knutson before the caution came out on lap three when Buddy Haidsiak spun un turns one and two. Dhondt manage to take the lead away on lap five but Knutson came right back to reclaim in on lap six. Knutson led until lap 13 when Dhondt was able to take the lead back just before a caution when Parker Anderson came to a stop a top of turn three. Dhondt held on to take the feature win ahead of Knutson, Scott Herron, Blake Luinenburg and Luke Ramsey.

Final feature of the night was the Hy-Vee IMCA Sport Compacts 15 lap feature event. Blake Driscol led the first lap before Sioux City's Gilbert Aldape took the lead away. Driscol took the lead back on lap nine just prior to the red flag coming out when John Patterson went off the top of turn two. Driscol held off Aldape and Kolby Sabin on the restart before Aldape had some late race issues. Sabin tried to get by Driscol but it was Driscol taking home the $500 to win pay check. Sabin finished second, Adam Broehm, Josh Barnes and James Riske round out the top five.

Next week the Speedway will house two nights of racing as their racing on Thursday and Friday Night. For the fifth year, the speedway will attempt to get in the King of the High Banks. IMCA Stock Cars will pay the top prize of $5,000 to win.

Thursday Night will see Stock Car Qualifying (2 sets of heat races earning points) with the top 10 locked in to Friday's Big Dance. IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks and IMCA Sport Compacts will have a full show. Then on Friday Night, Championship Night for Stock Cars plus a complete show again for Modifieds, Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts.
