Mother Nature did not play nice the week before as there was no racing for the Foxman, this week I was determined to go racing so the decision was simple go to the Hamilton County Speedway for the 13th Annual USMTS Spring Classic Night one. I was not disappointed with my decision even though the final checkered flag fell at 10:28p meaning after the walk back to the car, drive home, I rolled in the house right at midnight.
Forty-Eight Summit United States Modified Touring Series National Championship presented by RacinDirt Modifieds checked in for night 1 of the Spring Classic to claim the top prize of $3,000 to win. Ten Seneca Foundry USRA Stock Cars, 13 Stein Heating & Cooling USRA B-Mods and 12 Diamond in the Rough USRA Hobby Stocks also showed up for some Thursday Night Thunder Summit Racing Equipment USRA Weekly Racing Series action at the historic half mile.
As Harry Hogge would say to Cole Trickle in Days of Thunder.......No, no, he didn't slam you, he didn't bump you, he didn't nudge you.......he rubbed you. And rubbin, son, is racin'. That famous movie quote would live to be true when the USMTS Modifieds came out as they provided some fantastic racing to the fans in attendance or the ones watching on RacinDirt. You could find any seat you wanted last night so get out support them the next Two Nights.
First feature of the Night was the Diamond in the Rough USRA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event. Jeremy Crimmins grabbed the race lead early fending off Danny Ayers and Bryce Sommerfeld early. Crimmins would again be challenged by Ayers on lap five, Crimmins hugged the bottom while Ayers was riding the top side. Ayers was able to take the lead away. Ayers looked to be heading on to the win despite several challenges from Crimmins until the only race caution came out on lap 12 when Zack Smidt spun in turn two. Crimmins was able to take the lead back on the restart but Ayers refused to go away. Ayers made the pass on Crimmins on the final lap, to claim the victory. Crimmins was second, Chris Hovden came home third, Kolby Goepel was fourth and Sommerfeld was fifth.
Up next was the Summit Racing Equipment USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt 30 lap feature event. Zack Vanderbeek and Dan Ebert led the field to the green flag of the rugged warriors. Ebert was able to beat Vanderbeek back to the line to claim the top spot. The first caution came out on lap two when Brandon Givens spun in turn two, Jason Hughes also spun off the top to avoid. Ebert continued to lead the way fending of Vanderbeek and Rodney Sanders on the restart. Jim Chisholm and Tom Berry Jr worked their way into second and third. The was some great two, three and four wide battles through out the early going.
Ebert checked out but just as he was approaching lap traffic, Berry was able to reel him in and challenge for the race lead. Berry attempted to get by on lap 23 but was unsuccessful. Berry was able to take over the top spot on lap 24 from Ebert. Berry looked to be heading on to the win until a caution came out on lap 26 for Jake O'Neil in turn four. Berry continued to lead but another caution came out on lap 28 for Tyler Wolff spun after hitting an infield tire in turn four. One more caution set up a green-white-checkered finish on lap 29 when Hughes spun in turn four.
Berry led the white flag lap but on the last lap Ebert was able to steal the lead away from Berry after the two made contact in turns one and two. Berry ran out of room and made contact with the wall exiting turn two allowing Ebert to go and take the win. Sanders, Chisholm, Alex Williamson and Dereck Ramirez round out the top five. Jacob Bleess, Tim Ward, Terry Phillips, Will Krup and Jeremy Nelson finished sixth through tenth. Ramirez was the FK Rod Ends Hard Charger moving from 19th to fifth.
Hunter Longnecker took the early race lead in the Stein Heating & Cooling USRA B-Mods 16 lap feature event. Ty Griffith took the top spot away on lap three. The first caution came out on lap four when Joe Chisholm spun Longnecker, Chisholm sent to the tail and Longnecker regain second. Griffith got a great restart meanwhile Ben Moudry got by Longnecker. The caution came out again on lap seven when Trevor Fecht dumped oil on the race track. Griffith had a fantastic restart and started to pull away. One more caution came out on lap 12 when Jerid Ratzke slowed in turn two. Griffith was not going to be denied as he went on to take the feature win ahead of Chisholm, Brandon Hare, Bryer McCoy and Josh Appel.
Final feature of the night was the Seneca Foundry USRA Stock Cars 18 lap feature event. Myles Michehl led the first lap but the caution came out shortly after when John Ades and Levi Vander Weide spun in turn four. On the restart, Granada, Minnesota's Derek Green took the top spot away from Michehl. Green started to pull away only to see the caution come out when Brandon Mannhardt spun in turn three. Green got a great restart and never looked back, going on to claim the twin checkers. Bill Crimmins finished second, Andrew Borchardt was third, Reid Keller was fourth and Michehl fell back to fifth.
