On Friday Night, I returned to the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway in a familiar role that I spend 2011 through 2015 seasons, as co-announcer with Rodney Tomlinson. It was absolute blast to be announcing races it much easier to announce races with somebody then do by yourself because you can actually take a breath. I plan to keep notes as I announce the races so this blog is a recap from my view point. Okay enough about me lets get to the racing action.
Originally there was suppose to be two nights of Frostbusters at the Marshalltown Speedway but because of the predicted below freezing temperatures Thursday Night, the decision was made to cancel and make it a one day show. It was a beautiful crisp April Night with a strong winds allowing the race to live up to the name of Frostbuster. One sixty-six cars signed in to tame the highbanks of Motown.
First feature of the night was the Rugged Radios / Friesen Performance IMCA Sport Mods 20 lap feature event for $500 to win. The first caution came out before a single lap could be scored when several cars got together in turn four. Antigo, Wisconsin's Zachary Raab led the first lap but Alec Fett worked his way to the top spot on lap two. Brayton Carter followed Fett and began to challenge him before a caution came out on lap 7 when Taylor Kuehl blew up in turn four. Carter was able to gas bye Fett on the restart when Fett decided to block the lane of Jenae Gustin. Fett refused to go away but could not reclaim the lead as Carter went on to take the comfortable win. Fett came home in second, hometown favorite Gustin was third. Malone, Wisconsin's Timothy Warner was fourth and Dorchester, Nebraska's Trevor Noonan was fifth.
The Drury Automotive & Truck Repair IMCA Stock Cars 25 lap feature was next on to the speedway. Tom Berry Jr started sixth but by the end of lap one, he was in the top spot. The caution came out just after lap one when Austin Kaplan spun in turn four. Berry pulled away on the restart and appeared to be cruising but the caution came out when Mitchell Meier and Kaplan get together in turn three. Berry held off Nathan Ballard and Troy Jerovetz on the restart. Berry crossed the finish line in first however was disqualified in post race inspection for the right rear shock being too long. That gave the win to Jerovetz, Dan Mackenthun promoted to second. Johnathon Logue came across in fourth but was also disqualified so that move Cole Czarneski to third, Buck Schaforth to fourth and David Brandies was fifth.
Jimmy Gustin led the first lap of the 25 lap Tire Demon by Love Tap & Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds before Tim Ward took the top spot away on lap two. Ward pulled away and never looked back slicing his way through lap traffic, the only thing that slowed him was the caution lap 17 when Dylan Thornton and Richie Gustin got together in turn two. Ward powered to capture the $1,000 to win Fast Shaft All-Star Invitational Qualifier. Todd Shute grabbed second, Jimmy Gustin held on to third. Jeff Aikey and Jake McBirinie was fourth and fifth.
In the Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Hobby Stocks 20 lap feature, it was Eric Knutson grabbing the early lead but it was the "Flyin' Fireman" Calvin Dhondt working his way into second. Dhondt started to put some pressure on Knutson before the caution came out on lap three when Buddy Haidsiak spun un turns one and two. Dhondt manage to take the lead away on lap five but Knutson came right back to reclaim in on lap six. Knutson led until lap 13 when Dhondt was able to take the lead back just before a caution when Parker Anderson came to a stop a top of turn three. Dhondt held on to take the feature win ahead of Knutson, Scott Herron, Blake Luinenburg and Luke Ramsey.
Final feature of the night was the Hy-Vee IMCA Sport Compacts 15 lap feature event. Blake Driscol led the first lap before Sioux City's Gilbert Aldape took the lead away. Driscol took the lead back on lap nine just prior to the red flag coming out when John Patterson went off the top of turn two. Driscol held off Aldape and Kolby Sabin on the restart before Aldape had some late race issues. Sabin tried to get by Driscol but it was Driscol taking home the $500 to win pay check. Sabin finished second, Adam Broehm, Josh Barnes and James Riske round out the top five.
Next week the Speedway will house two nights of racing as their racing on Thursday and Friday Night. For the fifth year, the speedway will attempt to get in the King of the High Banks. IMCA Stock Cars will pay the top prize of $5,000 to win.
Thursday Night will see Stock Car Qualifying (2 sets of heat races earning points) with the top 10 locked in to Friday's Big Dance. IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks and IMCA Sport Compacts will have a full show. Then on Friday Night, Championship Night for Stock Cars plus a complete show again for Modifieds, Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts. Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks will join the fun and get their 2023 season rolling. A Practice Night will take place on Wednesday Night from 7-9pm. Racing on Thursday and Friday will start at 7:30pm.
