Finally on Friday night, I was able to attend racing action at the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway and keep notes to write a blog recap and I was not disappointed, there was exciting racing all night. I was at Marshalltown the previous two races but was flagging the races so it meant I could not keep notes.
One hundred-sixty six cars signed in to tame the quarter mile for the Karl Kustoms Showdown at Motown including forty-seven IMCA Modifieds for $1,000 to win. The racing action was not disappointing and with seven classes competing the races from 22 different states : Iowa, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Indiana, Illinois, California, New York, Arizona, Oregon, Nevada, Minnesota, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, North Dakota, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, Michigan, Wisconsin and Nebraska. The final checkered flag was waived by Logan Kelly at 10:42pm.
Thank you goes out to John Clemens for inviting me up to sit in the VIP Booth during the features since there was hardly anybody up in there, I appreciated the offer and I had fun sitting up in there watching the feature events last night it actually made it a little easier to keep notes. Okay back to the recap from the Showdown at Motown.
First feature of the night was the 15 lap IMCA STARS Mod Lites feature event. Jacob Copley grabbed the early lead until Dustin Ford took the top spot away on lap three. Ford led until track champion Randy Bryan was able to wrestle the lead away on lap seven. Bryan was followed by Josh May and twelfth place starter Jason Masengarb. Bryan held off everybody to take the feature win, May finished second, Masengarb was third, Ben George was fourth and Copley was fifth.
Ben Newhouse took the early lead of the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks 20 lap feature event but just after the completion of lap one, the caution came out when Kaitlyn Schuring sitting on the back stretch after receiving heavy contact from Logan Takes. Newhouse continued to lead until Eric Knutson was able to work his way by on lap six. Knutson lead until the caution came out on lap 12 for debris on the front stretch. Knutson had to contend with tenth place starter Eric Stanton on the restart holding him off until Stanton was able to take the race lead on lap 16. Knutson spun in turn four trying to reclaim the lead on lap 17 forcing the caution to come out. The caution came out on lap 18 when Newhouse went off the top of turn two forcing a green-white-checkered finish. Stanton went on to take the feature win ahead of Tyson Overton, Adam Streeter, Florida's Joel Magee and Knutson.
Next on the speedway was the Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Sport Mods 20 lap feature event, Tony Olson out dueled Thomas Nelson for the race lead and then received challenges from Ryan Gillmore shortly after. The caution came out on lap three when Jeremiah Reed spun in turn two. Olson held off Gillmore again on the restart but the caution came out again when Crystal Hemphill spun off top of turn three. Olson got a restart but Gillmore refused to go away, Olson continued cautions came out on lap 13 and 15. The caution on lap thirteen was Chance Titus off top of turn two. The final caution on lap fifteen was for Adam Baker, Jackson Harpoole, Jason Bannister and Dustin West in turn four. Brayton Carter had worked his way from eleventh to second and challenged Olson for the lead on the restart. Carter took the lead away on lap 17 and went on to take the feature win. Olson, Gillmore, Tyler Bannister and Clay Erickson rounded out the top five.
Scott Rice and Jeff Mueller led the field to the green flag in the Drury Automotive & Truck Repair IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature. Mueller led the first two laps before a caution came out when Riley Simmons spun in turn four, meanwhile just after the caution came out it was replaced with a red flag when Troy Tabors ended up on his side in turn one. Rice was able to steal the lead away from Mueller on lap three. Rice however gave Mueller the lead back on lap five when just after completing the previous lap, Rice ended up on the dirt mound off the back stretch. Mueller led until Austin Kaplan was able to take the top spot away on lap seven. Kaplan pulled away and went on to take the win. Mueller settled for second, Cory Davis was third, eleventh place starter Dave Atcher was fourth and Chris Luloff was fifth.
Tire Demon by Love Tap IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature saw Delta, Colorado's Ricky Alvarado jumped out to the race lead fending off pole sitter Tim Ward. Joel Rust was able to get by Ward for second and began to put heavy pressure on Alvarado for the race lead. The cautions came out on lap nine for Brint Hartwick and Eric Barnes in turn four and then for Zack Rawlins in turn two on lap ten. Rust made several attempts after the mid race restarts but came home short, once slipped up allowing Ryan McDaniel to enter the battle along Alvarado and Ward. Alvarado fend off all challenges from Rust including one exiting turn four coming to the checkers to claim the win. Rust, McDaniel, Cody Laney and Ward rounded out the top five.
Kevin Bolte led the opening lap of the Mach-1 IMCA Sport Compacts 15 lap feature event before track champion Kolby Sabin was able to take the top spot away on lap two. Sabin pulled away and cruised on to take the feature win. Kevin Bolte finished second, Jason Bolte was third, Utah's Payce Herrera was fourth and Ryan Brown was fifth.
Final feature of the night was the Karl Chevrolet Dirt Trucks 15 lap feature event. Jeff Johnson out dueled Dennis Plain on the first lap to lead. Plain was able to grab the top spot on lap two but Johnson came back and regained it on lap three. Plain tried to reclaim it on lap four but made contact with Johnson forcing the left front suspension to break coming to a stop in turn two. Johnson got a great restart and fended off Rick Clark until Clark spun on lap eleven. Brandon Toftee driving Justin Schroeder's truck challenged Johnson late but Johnson was able to hang on to take the feature win. Toftee, Shawn Cooney, Shonn Mapes and Bryan Spangler rounded out the top five.
