By Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (September 19th, 2015)
– Thanks to mother nature washing Friday Night out, it meant the Marshalltown Speedway was in store for an action packed Saturday Afternoon and Evening and it was exactly that nobody went home disappointed.

152 cars signed in to race both shows on Saturday from Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Oregon, Missouri, North Carolina, Arizona, Colorado, Minnesota, Nebraska , Oklahoma, Michigan and Kansas.

In the Afternoon show it was Shannon Anderson (IMCA Hobby Stocks), Jake McBirnie (IMCA SportMods) and Greg Wichman (IMCA Stock Cars) taking feature wins. Ricky Thornton Jr (Modifieds), Anderson (IMCA Hobby Stocks), Clint Luellen (IMCA SportMods) and Travis Van Straten (IMCA Stock Cars) took wins in the night cap.

Modifieds ran qualifying heats during the afternoon and the winners in round one was Todd Shute, Brian Mullen, Kyle Strickler, Adam Larson, Corey Dripps, Kelly Shyrock and Jacob Murray. Round two heats went to Jerry Wilinski, Matt Werner, Strickler, Ricky Thornton Jr, Kyle Kudick, Jordan Grabouski and Hunter Marriott.

Seth Janssen and Nick Ulin started on the front row in the first IMCA Hobby Stocks feature and it was Janssen wrestling the lead away but the caution out just after the completion of lap two. Benji Irvine worked his way from fifth to third but manage to take the lead away before the caution on lap three. Shannon Anderson started 11th but on lap nine, Anderson took the lead from Irvine. Anderson appeared to be heading on to the win but the caution came out forcing a green-white-checkered finish. Anderson held off Adam Armstrong, driving Gina Greubel's car, to take the win. Weston Koop, Jamie Songer and Bill Bonnett finished third through fifth.

In the first of two IMCA Northern SportMods feature, Jake McBirnie took the lead early and not even a caution on lap six or 12 denied him the win. Tracy Wassenberg started 5th and came home 2nd. Travis Peterson, 8th place finisher Tyler Frye and Jared Van Deest rounded out the top five.

Greg Wichman grabbed the lead in the IMCA Stock Cars first feature meanwhile Damon Murty was working his way through the field. Murty battled with Wichman for the lead and grabbed the top spot away on lap 11. Wichman did not give up as he managed to beating Murty to the checkered flag. Johnny Spaw was third, Randy Brands was fourth and Mike Schmidt was fifth.

After the afternoon show was completed, Speedway officials reworked the track for the evening show. Another complete show for SportMods, Hobby Stocks and Stock Cars. Last Chance Races, Dash and A Main for the Modifieds was on tap.

Ricky Thornton Jr was tenth in points after the heat races but was given the lead when Kyle Strickler drew the invert of ten for the TiLube ten lap Dash. Thornton took full advantage of that as he lead from start-to-finish.

Weston Koop lead the first four laps of the second IMCA Hobby Stock feature of the day as they were going two and three wide on lap one. Adam Armstrong started sixth but by the end of lap five, Armstrong was in the lead. Armstrong held on to the lead after a pair of cautions on lap six and ten. Shannon Anderson again got a bad redraw as he started 12th but worked his way up to take the lead away from Armstrong on lap 12. Anderson held off challenges from Armstrong and Benji Irvine to take his second win of the day. Irvine beats Armstrong for second. Dustin Elliott and Nick Ulin finished fourth and fifth.

Next up on the speedway was the 20 lap Modified Final Four race, top four finishers advance on to the 50 lap World Nationals feature. Jordan Grabouski grabbed the lead right away but just after one lap was completed the caution came out for Eric Elliott in turn three. Grabouski got a great restart and pulled away to take the win. 2013 Winner Jacob Murray finished second, Jake Hartung finished third and Jerry Wilinski was fourth.

Joel Rust destroyed his Modified a few weeks ago but Marty Rouse offered his IMCA SportMod up to Rust to race, Rust accepted. Rust wrestled the lead away from Jayme Duinink in the IMCA Northern SportMods 20 lap feature event. Rust was out to a big lead but Clint Luellen worked his way from sixth and strated to reel in Rust by lap eight. Luellen managed to take the lead away on lap 12 and would go on to take the win ahead of Rust. National Points Leader Tyler Frye from Kansas moved up nine spots to finished third, Tracy Wassenberg was fourth and Vince Engebregtsen was fifth.

Damon Murty wrestled the lead away from Donavon Smith in the IMCA Stock Cars feature event but just after the completion on lap one, the only race caution came out for Johnny Spaw, Steve Meyer and Jared Daggett getting together. Murty got a great restart but Travis Van Straten took second away from Donavon Smith and chase down Murty. Murty and Van Straten battled for the lead and it was Van Straten out dueling Murty for the win. Smith, Randy Brands and Wayne Gifford rounded out the top five.

Final feature of the day was the $10,000 to win World Nationals 50 lapper for the Modifieds, Ricky Thornton Jr and Todd Shute lead the field to the green flag. They were going three and four wide off the start of the race behind Thornton, who took the lead early. Just after the completion of lap two, the only race caution came out for Brandon Rothzen smacking the wall hard on the front stretch. Thornton was not going to let that bother him however by the time he began to encounter lap traffic on lap 30, 2014 World Nationals Winner Benji LaCrosse worked his way from 17th to second. Thornton sliced his way through the lap traffic and held off a hard charging LaCrosse to take $10,000 back to Arizona. Terry Phillips came from 13th to 3rd. Kyle Strickler finish 4th and Shute was fifth.

Gustin Remains Unbeaten on Larry Wollam Season Championship Night

Gustin Remains Unbeaten on Larry Wollam Season Championship Night
By Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (September 4th, 2015)
– Friday Night was an action packed night of racing with seven classes on the cards for the Dairy Queen Larry Wollam Season Championship Night at Marshalltown. 108 drivers signed in to get their names in the history books. Top ten in points were locked into the feature with 11th on back running last chance heats.

Donavon Smith (IMCA Stock Cars), Jared Van Deest (IMCA Northern SportMods) and Josh May (Mod Lites) all took victorys along with track championships in their divisions. Richie Gustin (Late Models), Chris Abelson (IMCA Modifieds) and Austin Luellen (IMCA Hobby Stocks) pick up feature wins as does Jordan Brown in the Quads.

Before a lap was completed in the Mod Lites feature event, the caution came out for DJ Schmalzried and Alonzo Grosse got together in turn two. When the race restarted it was Josh May wrestling the lead away from Travis Stensland. May saw the caution again come out on lap two. May pulled away and went on to take his 9th win at Marshalltown in route to his 3rd track title in six years. Travis Stensland ran second the entire way with Mike Morill in third. Joe Glick was fourth and Jason Whitehead was fifth. Three Micro Mods raced against the Mod Lites and they were Don Erger, Cole McNeal and Robby Decker.

Jared Van Deest took full advantage of his pole position that he earned for being the points leader in the IMCA Northern SportMods 18 lap feature by jumping out to the early lead. The battle behind him for second was intense for Brandon Williams, Jayme Duinink and Sam Wieben. Just after the completion of lap six, the caution was displayed first for Thomas Egenberger and then for Dale VanDerWal in turn two. Van Deest was never challenged as he got out to commanding lead just before the final caution for Ryan King coming to a stop in turn one forcing a green-white-checkered finish. Van Deest held off any challenges to take his six win and 2015 track championship. Duinink finished second ahead of Travis Peterson, Wieben and DJ Robinson.

Eric Stanton already had the track championship locked up in the Toby K's Hideaway IMCA Hobby Stocks but he was out for the win. Stanton proved that when he grabbed the early lead but Austin Luellen worked his way through the field and took the top spot away on lap six. Luellen held off Stanton to take his ninth at Motown. Stanton, Gary Pfantz, Eugene Nicklas and Garrett Eilander rounded out the top five.

Donavon Smith grabbed the lead early in the Miller Lite IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature. Smith led the entire way en route to his eighth win and his second consecutive track title and third in nine years. Steve Meyer finished second in the feature and points. Michael Jaennette was third, Jeff Wollam gets his best finish of the season by taking fourth ahead of Damon Murty.

Ronn Lauritzen came in the night five points behind Jimmy Gustin in the Coors Light IMCA Modifieds and it was Lauritzen taking the lead but just after one lap was scored, the caution came out for Dalton Dingman and Derek Reimer in turn four. Lauritzen saw Gustin and Josh Gilman restart right behind him and he was able to hold them off just after lap seven was scored the caution came out when Gustin went off the top side of turn one and two. That threw a curve ball to the track championship but then the caution came out on lap eight and nine, Gustin meanwhile was working his way back through the field. Gilman took the lead on lap eight and nine but it was National Point Leader Chris Abelson taking the lead away on lap ten. Gilman and Abelson battled it out with Gilman again taking the lead back on lap 11. Abelson finally worked his way by on lap 15 to go on and take his 3rd win in a row at Marshalltown. Lauritzen finished second. Kody Schlopp from Canada was third, Gustin worked his way back up to fourth which was enough to win the track championship by three points. Jake Strayer came home fifth.

Rumours Sports Bar & Grill Late Models were back for a third night of racing competiton with a little added incentive if anybody could be Richie Gustin fair and square they would pocket $1,600 thanks to Rumours and McFarland Pain Clinic. Paul Conrad and Mike O'Connor started on the front row and it was Conrad leading the opening lap. Jeremy Grady took the lead away on lap two but on lap five, Grady saw Richie Gustin sneak by for the lead. Gustin and the field saw the caution come out for Jerry King going off turn two. Gustin went on to take his third consecutive Late Model win at Marshalltown. Todd Cooney took second on lap 15 and tried to chase down Gustin but came up short. Grady, Robert See and Greg Kastli rounded out the top five.

George Hood took the whole shot and led lap one of the Flat Track Quads but Jordan Brown took the lead on lap two. Brown and Hood battled it out the rest of the way with Brown edging out Hood for the win. Adam Streeter, Dan Needles and David Petithory.

Track Points are all completed but the speedway is not finished yet as they take a week off and prepare for the World Nationals on September 17th through 19th. Open Practice to all competiors on Thursday. Modifieds will qualify on Friday and race for a top prize of $10,000 on Saturday. Hobby Stocks race for $500 to win on Friday and Saturday meanwhile Stock Cars and SportMods $1,000 to win each night.

Championship Battle between Gustin, Laurtizen and Gilman
Gustin -
Finish 5th or better automatically clinches his 6th championship in 9 years at Marshalltown.
2 Wins, 5 2nd place finishes, 3 3rd place finishes

Laurtizen -
Win and Gustin finishes 7th will give Lauritzen his second consecutive championship (If Laurtizen wins and Gustin finishes 6th they would be tied plus both would have 2 wins and the tiebreaker goes to Gustin because of 2nd place finishes: Gustin 5, Lauritzen 3)
Needs to finish at least 7 spots ahead of Gustin to win the Championship
1 win, 3 2nd place finishes, 1 3rd place finish

Gilman -
Win, Laurtizen finishes 4th and Gustin finishes 9th will give him his 1st track championship at Marshalltown (If Gilman wins, Lauritzen 3rd and Gustin 8th, there would be a 3 way tie and again the tiebreaker goes to Gustin on second place finishes to break the three way tie, then Gilman gets 2nd bc of wins)
Needs to finish at least 2 spots ahead of Laurtizen and 9 spots ahead of Gustin to win the Championship
1 win, 1 2nd place finish, 3 3rd place finish

All three are guaranteed to finish top 3 in Points

Strayer and Simatovich Battle for 4th
Strayer -
Finishes 4th place in Points if he finishes 14th or better
2 wins

Simatovich -
Can get 4th place in points if he finishes 14th spots ahead of Strayer. Simatovich is guaranteed a Top five finish in Points just by taking the green flag Friday since he is 31 points ahead of Trent Jackson
0 wins
Tiebreaker goes to Strayer on wins so these are the only possible scenarios that can happen between Strayer and Simatovich

Trent Jackson is guaranteed a 6th place finish in points by taking the green flag in the feature

Joel Rust is guaranteed at 7th place finish in points by taking the green flag in the feature but could get 6th place if Jackson does not show up as 32 points separate them.

Rod Clement clinches a 8th place finish in points if he finishes 8th or better or if he finishes at least 8 spots ahead of Reimer. Clement can get no worst than 9th place in points.

Derek Reimer despite missing a night because of his wedding and honeymoon, he is guaranteed a 9th place finish in points with the possiblity of a 8th place finish if he finishes 9 spots ahead of Clement
-If Reimer and Clement tie, tiebreaker goes to Clement for the best place finish: Clement 8th and Reimer 9th

Battle for the 10th place in Points
Snyder - clinches a top 10 finish in points with a 6th or better finish

Irvine - clinches a top 10 in points if he finishes 7th spots ahead of Snyder because Irvine has the tiebreaker on wins

Elliott- Can finish top 10 in points if Snyder and Irvine do not show up on Friday as Elliott currently sits 26 pts behind Snyder and 19 pts behind Irvine.

Larson - Has a chance for a top 10 in points if Snyder, Irvine and Elliott do not show up and he can finish at no worst than 5th.

Meyer - Only Chance of taking the title is Smith does not show up and can finish no worst than 3rd in Points
Finish 6th or better clinches a 2nd place finish in points or no more than 5 spots behind Jaennette

Jaennette - Chance of winning the track championship is slim but if Smith does not show up and he finishes six spots ahead of Meyer....he takes the championship.
Jaennette has to finish six spots ahead of Meyer to claim second in Points because of tiebreaker but will be guaranteed at least third

Pickett is guaranteed to finish fourth as he is 50 pts behind Jaennette for 3rd and is 57 pts ahead of 5th place Matt Deaton.

Deaton - 19th place or better finish clinches a 5th place finish in Points

Wollam - Needs to finish 18 spots ahead of Deaton to grab 5th place in points and can fall back to 7th if Thelen finishes sixth spots ahead of Wollam.

Balmer is guaranteed to finish in the 8th spot in points

Murphy will most likely finish in the 9th place spot in points

JD Kennedy has missed the last month and will still end up with a top 10 finish in points since he has a 70 pt advantage on Robbie Merkle.

Van Deest - Has clinched the track title and will be the 9th different SportMod Track Champion at Marshalltown

Brandon Williams - Clinches a 2nd place finish in points with a 6th place or better finish on Friday and could fall back to 4th if he doesn’t show up

Wieben - Can get 2nd in points if he finishes 6 spots ahead of Brandon Williams because has the tiebreaker on 2nd place finishes......Wieben will get 3rd place in points just by taking the green flag Friday night

Peterson
- Can get 2nd or 3rd should Willams or Wieben not show up but it appears that chance is slim. If Peterson finishes 10th or better he will take 4th place in points

Duinink- Can only get as high as 3rd should Wieben not show up and he finishes 11 spots ahead of Peterson. 11 spots ahead of Peterson will get him a 4th place finish in points but he has clinched a top 5 finish in the points just by starting the feature.

Hilmer - Goes in to Friday sitting in 6th place in points however because of high school football now under away it appears he won’t finish there and will fall to 9th.

Follett - Enters Friday 4 pts behind Hilmer and appears will be battling with King for the 6th spot. Follett can clinched the 6th spot in points by finishing 1 spot ahead of King.

King - Has clinched a top 8 finish in points but can get as high as 6th by finishing ahead of Follett. Should King and Follett tie the tiebreaker goes to King.

Masolini will finish top 10 in Points just by starting the feature on Friday Night but could slip back to 10th if Schuring finishes 9 spots ahead of him and could fall back to 11th if he doest not show up and Scott Williams does.

Schuring claims a top 10 finish in points by starting the feature on Friday Night and can claim 9th in points if he finishes 9 spots ahead of Masolini. Could fall back to 11th if he does not show up and Scott Williams does.

Stanton has clinched his 1st Marshalltown track championship as he enters Friday Night with a 120 pt lead.

Pfantz, Luellen, Barber and Eilander are all with in 6 pts of each other heading into Friday Night

Pfantz - best chance at finishing 2nd place in points is to finish 2nd or better as long as Luellen does not finish 1st.

Luellen- Claims second if he finishes 1 spot ahead of Pfantz because of tiebreaker on Wins.....Luellen will get 3rd if Pfantz wins. Luellen can finish 1 spot behind Barber to claim 3rd as well.

Barber - Can finish as high as 2nd in points by finishing 2 spots ahead of Luellen and 3 spots ahead of Pfantz and could fall back as far back as sixth.

Eilander - Missed a couple of nights but has been lights out on the weeks he was there and could end up with a 2nd place finish in points if he finishes 6 spots ahead of Pfantz, 5 spots ahead of Luellen and 4 spots ahead of Barber

Million - Enters Friday Night 2 pts behind Nicklas for the 6th spot in Points but would have to finish at least 3 spots ahead of Nicklas to beat him in the points because Nicklas holds the tie breaker for best finish

Peck - Will finish in the top 9 in pts but has a chance to finish as high as 6th in points. Peck finished 7th or better he is guaranteed to finish 8th in points.

Pitts has a chance to finish to finish 8th in points if he finishes 7 spots ahead of Peck because of best finish tiebreaker.....Pitts has a chance to finish 7th if Million does not show up and he can finish 7 spots ahead of Peck.
