Strickler Wins on Fast Shafts Night at Marshalltown

Strickler Wins on Fast Shafts Night at Marshalltown
By Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (July 17th, 2015)
– A very beauitful but hot and steamy night of racing at the Marshalltown Speedway on Fast Shafts by Axle Exchange and Marshalltown Police. Extra Money on the line in both the IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Hobby Stocks with 98 total cars checked in.

Kyle Strickler (IMCA Modifieds), Sam Wieben (IMCA Northern SportMods) and John Watson (IMCA Hobby Stocks) making their first visits to victory lane in Marshalltown. Josh May (Mod Lites) and Michael Jaennette (IMCA Stock Cars) making a return visit.

Though short on cars in the Mod Lites the action was exciting in the 15 lap feature event. Mike Morrill started inside row two by the end of lap one, Morrill was out front leading but that was short lived because Travis Stensland took the lead away on lap two. Stensland led until Morrill took the lead away again on lap five. Morrill spun around in turn four forcing the yellow to come out just after the completion of lap eight that gave the lead over to Josh May. May took full advantage and went on to take his 5th win at Motown. Stensland finished second, Randy Bryan was third, Morrill finished fourth and Jason Whitehead was fifth.

Jayme Duinink wrestled the lead away from Neil Follett on lap one in the IMCA Northern SportMods 18 lap feature but short after the caution was displayed for Dakoda Sellers and Dan Drury in turn two. Duinink had Follett and Sam Wieben on his back bumper for the restart and Wieben was able to grab the lead away on lap three. Wieben and the field saw the caution come out again on laps five and six but Wieben was not fazed as he held off challenges from Jared Van Deest, Follett and Johnathan Logue. The caution came out again after laps nine, ten and 12 but it was all Wieben's race. Wieben held off challenges from Van Deest to take his first win at Marshalltown in 2015. Jenae Gustin ran third, Travis Peterson was fourth and Brandon Williams was fifth.

Thanks to Supreme Lawn & Landscape and Jamie Songer the Toby K's Hideaway IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature paid $400 to win. Andy Hick and Tyson Overton redrew the front row, Hick grabbed the early lead and not even caution on lap two for Mitchell Thomas in turn two appeared to bother him. John Watson started sixth and worked his way up to grabbed the lead away on lap ten. Watson held off Hick to take the win. Eric Stanton, Austin Luellen and Tyson Overton rounded out the top five.

Tyler Pickett led the first three laps of the Miller Lite IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature before Michael Jaennette worked his way from sixth. Jaennette took the lead away on lap four appeared to be going to take the win but the cautions came out on laps 13 and 15 which allowed Donavon Smith to be right there behind him. Jaennette held off even a last turn challenge from Smith to take his 2nd win at Motown. Smith, Dave Atcher, Pickett and Steve Meyer was second through fifth respectively.

Final feature of the night was the Coors Light IMCA Modifieds Fast Shaft All-Star Invitational Qualifer 25 lap feature. California's Ethan Dotson and North Carolina's Kyle Strickler led the field to the green and it was Strickler taking the early lead. They were going three and four through out the field behind Strickler but the caution came oun lap two for Jake Strayer in turn four. Strickler did not let that caution or the pair of cautions on lap five bother him as he was able to get out to a commanding lead by the time the caution was displayed again on lap 12, 16 and 17. Strickler then had to hold off challenges from Jon Snyder and when the final caution came out on lap 22 setting up a three lap dash to finish it was Strickler holding on to the lead, Snyder slid up the track and fell back. Strickler went on to take the checkered flag first worth $1,000 ahead of Ronn Lauritzen, 11th place starter Tim Ward, 15th place starter Josh Gilman and 13th place starter Scott Simatovich.

Next Friday Night is Rumours Bar & Grille Night at the Races. Spectator Eliminators are also on the card. Hot Laps at 6:50pm and Racing at 7:30pm.

Mark your calenders for Friday Night August 14th and 21st as the IMCA Late Models will make a return to the high banks of Marshalltown for a night of weekly racing awarding State and National Points.

Shryock Claims Hawkeye Dirt Tour First at Osky
By Jeremy Fox

Oskaloosa, Iowa (July 15th, 2015) – The Southern Iowa Speedway hosted the Southern Iowa Fair Races sponsored by KBOE Radio and Mahaska Bottling Company. 92 Cars checked in including 32 Hawkeye Dirt Tour IMCA Modifieds.

Also the second class of the Southern Iowa Speedway Hall of Fame was inducted at intermission. This year's class included Jim Brown, Dean Sylvester and Danny Wallace.

Feature Winners were Kelly Shryock (Hawkeye Dirt Tour), Daniel Hilsabeck (IMCA Stock Cars), Jason McDaniel (IMCA Northern SportMods), Dale Porter (IMCA Hobby Stocks) and Bill Whalen (IMCA Sport Compacts).

First feature of the night was the 18 lap Budweiser IMCA Stock Car feature event and it was Daniel Hilsabeck grabbing the lead early from his outside front row starting spot. Hilsabeck knew there was a very intense battle for position behind him as Nathan Wood, Todd Reitzler, Mike Hughes, Cayden Carter, Zack Vanderbeek, Damon Murty and Derrick Agee all battled for 2nd on back. Hilsabeck maintain the lead with Wood in second when the only race caution came out on lap 15 for Trent Barker in turn one. Hilsabeck held on to take his second win at Osky. Hughes grabbed second away from Wood. Murty and Reitzler was fourth and fifth respectively.

Curtis VanDerWal and Frank Packer started on the front row of the 16 lap KBOE Radio IMCA Northern SportMods feature event. VanDerWal grabbed the early lead but just after the completion of lap one the caution came out when Jake McBirnie spun in turn one collecting a few others. On the restart, VanDerWal saw Packer, Cory Van Zante, Aaron Osweiler and Jason McDaniel right behind him by the end of lap two it was McDaniel in the race lead. McDaniel and the field saw the caution come out on lap ten when Frank Packer lost a driveshaft in turns three and four. McDaniel went on to take his 3rd win ahead of VanDerWal, Brayton Carter, Van Zante and Aaron Osweiler.

Because the possibility of rain moving in the 25 lap Hawkeye Dirt Tour for the Musco Lighting IMCA Modifieds feature event was moved up in the program. Ricky Thornton Jr, fresh off from winning the Dakota Classic Tour redrew the pole and took advantage early by taking the lead. Thornton's time out front leading was short lived because Kelly Shryock grabbed the lead away on lap three just before the caution came out. Shryock continued to pave the way when the caution came out again on lap five for Zach Less, Jason Murray and Jimmy Gustin in turn four. Shryock saw Cayden Carter move into second on the restart. Shryock held on to take his first Hawkeye Dirt Tour win and became the fourth different tour winner at Osky in consecutive years. Strickler grabbed second away from Carter on lap 22. Carter finished third, Colt Mather was fourth and Hunter Marriott was fifth.

Dale Porter wrestled the lead away from Danny Thrasher in the IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature. Porter led from start-to-finish and held off several challenges from Thrasher to take his second win at Osky. Griffiths, Greene and Jared Stephens rounded out the top five.

Final feature of the night was the IMCA Sport Compacts feature, originally scheduled for ten laps but mother nature had other plans for this feature. Trent Orwig led the first three laps before Bill Whalen took the lead away on lap four. As the field came to complete lap five the call was made to go checkered making it an official race with Bill Whalen picking win number four. Orwig, Shawn Havel, Larry Hopkins and John Girdley was second through fifth.

Auringer Wins the 21st Annual Hogan Memorial

Normally Sunday Nights I am at Stuart International Speedway but on Sunday the Benton County Speedway had the 21st Annual Hogan Memorial so the plan was to take the night off and head east instead of west for the night to support the Hogan Family. The race remembers Dick and Janet Hogan, Scott Hogan (driver of the number 33D IMCA Modified) parents which i have gotten to know Scott over the years and never like to miss this event so thanks to Chuck Vanderheiden at Stuart, i got the night off there to help support the race but was put to work by Promoter Mick Trier.

First feature of the night was the 15 lap BCS MicroMods feature and after the initial start was called back it was AJ Whitten grabbing the lead. The caution came out on lap five for Dallon Murty on the back stretch. Whitten continued to pace the field but when the final caution came out on lap 12 for Buster Pate forcing a three lap dash it was Don Erger taking the lead away. Erger went on to take his 4th in at BCS  ahead of Whitten, Jeff Davis, Scott Beaty and Tristan Cordes.

In the 18 lap IMCA Northern SportMods feature event, it was Kyle Olson wrestling the lead away from Dakoda Sellers and Dawn Krall on lap one. Olson saw cousin Tony work his way to second and begin the battle Olson battle for the lead however the caution came out on lap four for Lucas Lundry in turn four and then again on the restart for Dave Burrell in turn two. Kyle Olson continued to hold off cousin Tony but cautions came out again on laps seven, eight and nine. Kyle Olson was not letting any caution bother him and that became to be true when the final race cautions came out on lap 13 and 14 as Kyle Olson went on to take the win. Danny Dvorak took second away from Tony Olson. Sam Wieben and Ryan King was fourth and fifth.

Nathan Wood started on the pole of the IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature event and he took full advantage by leading lap one but shortly after the caution came out when Darin Duffy went around in turn four. Wood had to contend with Scooter Dulin and John Oliver Jr on the restart. Oliver took the lead away from Wood on lap three and three laps late the caution came out again this time for Chris Luloff in turn four. Oliver and the field saw the caution come out three times on lap nine forcing a single file restart the rest of the way. Oliver continued to lead despite having to hold off many challenges through the remaining laps but it was Oliver taking the checkered first. Kevin Rose was second, Phil Holtz was third, Duffy came back through the field to finish fourth and Scott Pippert was fifth.

Bill Bonnett and Jacob Floyd led the field to the green in the 16 lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature but it was Adam Petzrelka grabbing the lead. The first race caution came out on lap three for Brayton Boyer, Gabe Phelps and Joe Luethje getting together in turn four. Petzrelka contiuned to lead the way until lap nine when Nathan Ballard worked his way through the field to take the lead away. Ballard saw Brett Vanous follow suit and it was Vanous taking the lead away on lap 12. Ballard though edged out Vanous on laps 14 and 15 but Vanous beat Ballard to the Checkered flag to take the win by a foot. Brian Happel came across in third but was disqaulifed in post race tech that moved up Petzrelka to third, Bill Bonnett to fourth and Zach Swanson to fifth.

Vern Jackson and Joe Docekal redrew the front row for the 50 lap Hogan Memorial feature for the IMCA Modifieds but before a lap was completed Patrick Flanangan spun in turn one. When the race got going it was Docekal taking the top spot which he held until the caution came out on lap 14 for Devon Havlik in turn three. Hunter Marriott was running second at the time and on the restart got a great restart which allowed him to take the lead away from Docekal. The caution came out for Kyle Strickler sitting in turn two after contact from Docekal. Marriott now had JD Auringer on his back side but the caution came out just after the completion of lap 16 when Jerry Luloff spun in turn four. Marriott saw the caution come out again on laps 23 and 24 but he would continue to lead when the halfway pit stop came. Auringer, Kyle Brown, Richie Gustin, Zach Less, Troy Cordes, Vern Jackson, Darin Duffy, Cayden Carter and Scott Hogan was the top ten at halfway.

Marriott continued to lead until Auringer finally found away to take over the lead on lap 29. Auringer continued to lead and Brown worked his way to second. The caution came out on lap 36 but Auringer was not bother as he went on to take his 3rd Hogan Memorial win and two in a row. Gustin was second, Brown fell back to third. Carter and Jackson rounded out the top five. Duffy, Hogan, Marriott, Josh Gilman and Jeff Waterman finished sixth through tenth respectively.

Gill Makes Five In a Row at Hamilton County Speedway

Saturday Nights continue to be the night of where i might end up for racing and well after a last minute decision, i decided to make the trip north to the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City of their weekly show. Great night for racing with a few exciting finishes on the night.

First feature of the night was the IMCA Sport Compacts 10 lap event. Nick Hogan grabbed the early lead but John Gill made the top side work and grabbed the lead away just before a caution on lap four. The caution came out on lap four when James Peterson spun made contact with the wall in turn two. Gill and Hogan battled it out for the final six laps but it was Gill taking his fifth win in a row. Hogan finished second, Jacob Reiter was third, Ryan Boland was fourth and Kalan Guthrie was fifth.

Doug McCollough took the early lead in the Cassidy Brothers Implement IMCA Hobby Stocks 16 lap feature but the caution came out just after the compeletion of lap one when Danny Sassman spun in turn three. McCollaugh continue to lead until Randy Embrey took the top spot away on lap five. Embrey went on to take the win ahead of Matt Mundt, McCollough, Craig Graham and Myles Michehl.

Before a single lap was completed in the IMCA Northern SportMods 16 lap feature, there was a caution for Cory Bahrenfuss, DJ Robinson, Rick Routh, Jerid Ratzke, Chris Teel and Nate Olmstead all getting together in turn two. On the restart, it was Matt Lettow taking the top spot but Lettow experience troubles on lap six and headed pit side shortly after that gave the lead over to Brandon Toftee. Toftee went on to win despite a pair of cautions on lap eight, becoming the first driver other than Ty Griffith (finished 2nd) and Jared Van Deest (finished 3rd) to win a feature during weekly competiton this season. Ratzke came back through the field to finish fourth and Jon Peed was fifth.

Jason Minnehan led from start-to-finish in the 18 lap Mary Ann's Speciality Foods Stock Cars feature and not even the caution on lap 14 could prevent him from taking the win. Jon Braathun was second meanwhile Scott Williams driving the Super Cooper car finished third. Jim Mitchell and John Campbell rounded out the top five.

Tyler Prochaska led the first four laps in the George White Chevrolet IMCA Modifieds feature but a caution came out when  Cole Hall came to a stop in turn three. Scott Olson grabbed the lead away on the restart and went on to take the win ahead of Mark Elliott, Greg Elliott, Joel Rust and Prochaska.

Final feature of the night was the Neighbors Heating/Cooling/Plumbing IMCA Late Models 20 lap feature and it was Rusty Patterson leading the first two laps but Ben Nading worked his around and took the lead away on lap three. Nading led the remaining laps to take the win ahead of Jason Hahne, John Emerson, Patterson and Paul Nagle.
