Thunder Dome Race #6 Recap

Snow Didn’t Stop the Thunder Dome From Racing
By Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (February 23rd, 2013) – Earlier in the week the weather people were predicting heavy snow which led to many people questioning to go racing and that was still the case until early friday afternoon. The decision was made by head track prep, line-up guy and fairboard member Randy Nielsen and despite that they got it all cleared up outside enough to be able to race. At the same time, they also had to deal with mositure that finally came up on the race track because it had froze so they had to take care of that issue.

First feature of the day was the Jr 1 Animal  and Jr 2 Animal feature racing together as there was only  one entry in the Jr 1 Animal and two Jr 2 Animal. Mark Maas would lead 11 laps before pulling off just as after seeing the white flag that would hand the lead over to Michael Pfalzgraf. Pfalzgraf would go on to take the win in the Jr 2 Animal meanwhile  Ethan Starrett would finish 2nd and take the win in the Jr 1 Animal. Maas would finish 3rd and finish 2nd in the Jr 2 Animal

In the Quad C Trophy Class there was only one entry so Justin Sutherlin would take home the win.

Jr 2 Medium feature would see Tyler Havens lead the entire 12 laps to take the win which would also complete the clean sweep on the day. Mark Maas would finish 2nd, Shawn Cooney was 3rd, Brock Badger was 4th and Thomas Egenberger was 5th.

Rookie Beginners again would see “Ty Man” Ty Solverson jump to the lead and cruise to the easy win. Keegan Thompson was 2nd and Izac Mallicoat would finish 3rd. Braden Wilden would run in a race by himself to get some more lap experience.

The Rookie Advanced class would see only 2 competitors and it would be Brady Kohrs, just days after his birthday and his sister’s birthday, grabbing the lead and not looking back in root to the win. Landon Duffy, fellow friend from Independence would finish 2nd.

Jr Quads feature would go to Jackson Misel from Des Moines with JP Strawn from Des Moines coming home 2nd but this race was really cool to see and the crowd and officials were all making some noise when this race winded down.

In the Jr 1 Amateur division it would again have its troubles getting going but when it did it was Keaton Woosley from Conrad grabbing the early lead before Walker Ashton from Beamon would grab the lead on lap 4. Woosley and Caleb Peterson would battle for 2nd and even bring the yellow out but it would be Ashton taking the win. Peterson would finish 2nd and Woosley was 3rd.
McKinzie Culbertson would grab 2 heat race wins so that means she would get to start on the pole and she would capitalize  on that as she would lead the entire 12 lap Jr 1 Medium feature despite 3 yellows slowing the event down. Culbertson would take her first Jr 1 Medium win and completing the clean sweep, looks like dads work in the garage paid off. Nick Rose would finish 2nd, Logan Duffy was 3rd,  Kadence Davenport was 4th and Blaine Webster was 5th.

After being one of the largest classes last week, this week the Stock Heavy would have only four entries signed in. Kody Havens would lead every lap in the feature to take the win and sole position of the points lead. Albert Wolfgram would get 2nd after Travis Hatch and Clair Messor would get into each other a couple of times. Hatch would get 3rd and Messor was 4th.

UnlimitedAll-Stars had only 1 entry on the day and that would be Scott Badker and he would run with the Stock Heavy class all day.

Quad A Feature would see David Petithory complete the sweep as he would get his 3rd wholeshot victory of the day. Blake Miller would finish a close 2nd, Vance Misel was 3rd, Doug Slyvester was 4th and George Hood was 5th.

Final feature of the day was the Mad Dogg Bikes and Pro Bikes. There was two Mad Dogg Bikes and one Pro Bike on the day. Clayton Webster would grab the win in the Pro Bike divison meanwhile his brother Brandon Webster would take the win in the Mad Dogg Bike division over Race Promoter Brian Kauffman.

The Thunder Dome has only two events left on the schedule and they are Saturday March 16th and Saturday March 23rd.  Smokin’ Smoe Memorial is on March 23rd and following the races that day will be the Annual Banquet. Hot Laps at Noon and Racing to Follow and pit admission is $10.

A Wild Day of Racing Inside the Thunder Dome

A Wild Day of Racing Inside the Thunder Dome
By Jeremy Fox

Marshalltown, Iowa (February 16th, 2013) – Saying the day was just eventful would not be the true words so we are going to say it was a wild and eventful day. The racing action was very exciting the entire day and featured right around 70 entries competing.

First feature of the day was ran during the heat races and that was the Box Stock class which had only 1 entry sign in and that was Riley Plain of Webster City.

After all the heats were finished the first feature to come out was the Jr 1 Animal  and Jr 2 Animal feature racing together as there was only 1 entry in each of the divisions. Mark Maas the Jr 2 Animal would lead the entire feature to take the win in the Jr 2 Animal  meanwhile Jr 1 Animal of Ethan Starrett would come home 2nd but grab the win the Jr 1 Animal.

Kid Karts would again see the “Toledo Terror” Kinzer Janennette lead all 8 laps in root to the  win. Cason Fitch from Altoona would come home in 2nd.

Jr 2 Medium feature saw the Brother and Sister duo sitting on the front row, Tyler and Brook Havens. Thomas Egenberger would spin around forcing a yellow and a complete restart. After the race finally got going the yellow would fly for Brook Havens spinning around in turn 4. Tyler Havens meanwhile would be able to go on to the win, Brook Havens would find her way back up to grab 2nd. Mark Maas was 3rd and Thomas Egenberger was 4th.

In the Quad C Trophy Class it would be Kyle Smith and Riley Songer getting together forcing a restart, on the restart Smith would forced the yellow again because he had a flat right rear tire. When the race finally going it would be Riley Songer getting the wholeshot win. Justin Sutherlin, Trinity Cuppies, Kyle Smith and Mark McCoy round out the top 5.

Rookie Beginners saw “Ty Man” Ty Solverson jump to the lead but the yellow would fly twice for Kinzer Jaennette getting in to the tire barrier in turn 2 and then again getting together with Jayson Alexander. Solverson would cruise to the win with Alexander finishing 2nd and Jaennette in 3rd.

The Rookie Advanced class would see Brady Kohrs jump to the lead and it appeared as if Kohrs wouldn’t be challenged but the yellow came out on lap 6 when Dallon Murty and Landon Duffy would get together on the front stretch. Murty was sent to the tail, Duffy would exit to the infield as something broke on his cart. On the restart, Kohrs was able to hold of Gaige Stratton from Amana, who was making his first appearance of the year, to take the win. Stratton finished 2nd, Murty was 3rd and Duffy was 4th.

Jr Quads feature would go to Tristan Rethmeier from Newton. Kaden Polson was 2nd, JP Strawn was 3rd and Cason Fitch would not make the call.

Mad Dogg Bikes saw Brandon Webster get the whole shot win over Promotor Brian Kauffman. Hunter Wilson and Geoffrey Wilson would experience trobules earlier in the day forcing them to not make the call.

In the Jr 1 Amateur division it would have its troubles getting several laps in as there would be 3 yellows in the early going, the first yellow was for Keaton Woosley in turn 3 and 4 and next too was when Jordan Graves and Brayden Greubel would get together. Caleb Peterson would lead the first 3 laps before Graves would take the lead on lap 4 when Peterson would experience issues forcing an exit to the infield. Graves would go on to take the win with Keaton Woosley finishing 2nd. Brayden Greubel was 3rd, Makayla Stephens was 4th and Caleb Peterson was 5th.

Quad B would see Doug Slyvester get the wholeshot victory over David Petithory, Riley Songer and Jeremy Olsen.

Amateur Bikes and Pro Bikes would race together as there was only 2 Amateur Bikes and 1 Pro Bike on the day. In the Amateur Bikes it was Brandon Webster taking the win and Austin Davis in 2nd meanwhile in the Pro Bikes it was Clayton Webster taking the win.

Pit Bikes had 3 entries on the day and it would be Austin Davis getting the wholesot victory over Travis Breerzeile and Hunter Wilson.

In the Jr 1 Medium it was Blaine Webster leading the entire feature event to take the win. Nick Rose was 2nd, Logan Duffy was 3rd, McKinzie Culbertson was 4th and Kadence Davenport was 5th.

For the 2nd week in a row the the Largest class of the day was the Stock Heavy, Travis Hatch would grab the race lead earlier and appeared to be going on to the win but then the yellow came when Dustin Filloon would have a wheel come off forcing a yellow flag. Again it was Hatch taking advantage but with a handful of laps to go, Hatch would go around foricng the yellow and handing the lead over to Kody Havens. Kody Havens would hold off the late race challenges from Clair Messor to take the win. Al Wolfgram finished 3rd, Mike Ferguson was 4th and Travis Hansaker was 5th.

Final feature of the day was the Quad A feature and it would be David Petithory getting the wholesot win over Vance Misel, George Hood, Billy Petithory and Jordan Brown.

The racing action was some great racing all day long despite the track being slick and dry most of the day but with the cold temperatures no water could be added to the track and for a while this week the races were in limbo where or not they would be racing but the show went on as scheduled.
