Every year on my birthday, I go to the races and this year was no different after going through my options, I decided to make the trip over to Iowa's Action Track and the Boone Speedway for the 9th Annual P1P Modified Challenge and the Watermelon Classic presented by D&E Outdoor Services. It was hard for me to believe looking in my records, the last time I was at Boone Speedway was May 28th so this was my first trip in over two months.
The racing was fantastic all night and it was a great way to spend my birthday. I brought the camera and took pictures and posted them on the the Trackside Report by Foxman Facebook Page. Racing action wrapped up around 10:50pm and I was able to make it back home around midnight.
A total of one hundred-sixty eight cars checked in for the Annual Watermelon Classic presented by D&E Outdoor Services including 38 IMCA Modifieds for the 9th Annual P1P Modified Challenge.
Izac Mallicoat and Tom Berry Jr led the field to green in the fifteen lap 9th Annual P1P Modified Challenge race. Tom Berry Jr jumped out to the race lead and never looked back despite challenges from Mallicoat, Cory Wray and David Stremme. Berry claim the $1,000 to win prize ahead of Stremme, Cory Sauerman, Wray and Mallicoat.
First regular feature of the night was the Carquest Auto, Truck & Farm IMCA Mod Lites 15 lap feature event. Joe Glick grabbed the race lead early. Glick held off Cory Sonner and Randy Bryan before looking to be going on the feature win. Tenth place starter Josh May worked his way through the field and up to second by lap ten. May was able to take the top spot away from Glick on lap 12 and it was May going on to take the feature win. Glick finished second, Austin Gray came home third, Bryan in fourth and Sonner in fifth.
Before a single lap was completed in the Elmquist Towing IMCA Sport Mods 18 lap feature event, the caution came out when Nate Friesen spun off the top of turn one. When the race got started, it was Jessiah Taylor grabbing the top spot with Curtis Veber and Matt Avila applying pressure. Veber would grab the race lead away just before a caution on lap five when Camdan Vincent and Billy Dyer got together in turn two. Veber held on to take the feature win ahead over Avila, Cory Pestotnik, tenth place starter Dustin Lynch and Dusty Masolini.
Jonathan Logue out dueled Jay Schmidt for the early lead in the Boone Moose Lodge 104 IMCA Stock Cars 25 lap feature event. The caution came out on lap two when Miciah Hidlebaugh spun Jake Sachau in turn four, then on the restart for debris on the front stretch. Logue held off Schmidt and Scott Olson on the restart but the caution came out again on lap four when Nick Roberts spun in turn three. The final caution came out on lap five when Cody Gustoff and Kevin Opehim got together on the front stretch. Logue was determine to remain out front but Schmidt ran a different lane and able to take the top spot away on lap nine. Schmidt led until David Smith worked his way up to take the top spot away on lap 18. Smith went on to take the feature win. Schmidt came home second, Logue was third, Michael Jaennette in fourth and Olson in fifth.
Cory Sauerman led the first five laps of the D&E Outdoor Services IMCA Modifieds 25 lap feature event before David Stremme took the top spot away on lap six. Stremme started to pull away until Tom Berry Jr worked his way into second and chase down Stremme. The caution on lap 21 when Paul Nagle spun in turn three helped Berry to catch Stremme. Berry challenged Stremme for the race lead and tried to make the pass a lap earlier but came up short until Berry was able to take the top spot away on lap 24. Berry takes the feature win worth $1,000 ahead of Lethal Chassis Builder David Stremme. Jeremy Mills moved from eighteenth to finish third, sixteenth place starter Tim Ward was fourth and Cory Sauerman was fifth.
Final feature of the night was the Pickett Salvage IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature event. "Squishy" Solomon Bennett was able to grab the early race lead. The first caution came out on lap four when Eric Knutson spun in turn two. Bennett led until "The Burglar" Andrew Burg was able to take the top spot away on lap eight. The final caution came out on lap ten when Mike Smith was spun by Zach Hemmingsen in turn two. Burg went on to take the feature win. John Watson, Bennett, Rusty Bates and Seth Janssen rounded out the top five.
