Its hard to believe the 2023 racing season at the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway wrapped up track points already as the North 3rd Avenue Dairy Queen Larry Wollam Season Championships along with Iowa Seamless Gutters took place on Friday. The night is in honor of Larry Wollam and all of his contributions to the speedway and Larry lived by a saying.
THE LARRY WOLLAM VIEW OF LIFE--
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you'd like to win, but think you can't,
It's almost a cinch that you won't.
If you think you'll lose, you're lost.
For out in the world we find
Success begins with a fellow's will,
It's all in the state of mind.
You've got to think high to rise.
You've got to be sure of yourself,
Before you can win the prize.
Life's battles don't always go,
To the strongest or fastest man.
But sooner or later the person who wins,
Is the person who thinks he can.
One hundred-one cars signed in the pit gate to tame the high banks of the Karl Auto Group of Marshalltown Speedway. There was great racing action all night long, several exciting and eventful finishes. The final twin checkers was displayed at 10:35pm.
First feature of the night was the Hy-Vee of Marshalltown IMCA Sport Compacts 15 lap feature event. "Ricky Bobby" Mitchell Bunch worked his way by the "Wylie Coyote" John Patterson and "Crash Dummy" Larry Werner, who led the field to the green early. Bunch pulled away and a commanding lead as Kolby Sabin worked his way into second. The only race caution came out on lap ten when William Michel came to a stop on the top of turn four. Bunch held off Sabin and Blake Driscol on the restart and hung on the final five laps to claim second win in Motown. Sabin came home in second allowing him to claim the 2023 track championship. Driscol was third, Chad Larson had a strong run and came home in fourth and Patterson held off Werner for fifth.
Next up on the speedway was the only division not wrapping up track points this week, the Knight Sanitation IMCA Mod Lites for their 15 lap feature event. William Nobles led the first lap of the event before fourth place Joe Glick was able to take over the top spot. Glick was followed by Jason Masengarb and Cory Sonner but Glick held off their challenges until Masengarb was able to take the race lead on lap seven. Glick regained the lead on lap nine but now it became a five car battle up front as Jon Padilla and Josh May joined the fun. Glick remained strong and went on to take the feature win. Masengarb, Padilla, May and Sonner round out the top five. May heads into the Mod Lites Season Championship night next week with a 36 point advantage over Padilla, meaning once he takes the green next week he clinches the track title.
Big 8 Tyre Center "Wild Thing" IMCA Hobby Stocks 20 lap feature event saw Ben Newhouse wrestle the race lead early from fellow front row starter Tucker Richardson. Newhouse was able to hold off Richardson until the caution came out on lap four when Mike House spun in turn two and then again on the restart for debris on the front stretch. Newhouse held off Richardson and "Squishy" Solomon Bennett on the restart but slipped up on lap seven allowing Richardson to take over the top spot. Richardson then had to contend with ninth place starter Bradly Graham before a caution came out on lap 12 when House spun in turn two. Graham was able to get by Richardson on lap sixteen and go on claim is first victory in Motown this season. Eleventh place starter Eric Knutson came home in second, Richardson fell back to third. Fourteenth place starter Sam West was able grab fourth as a few cars got together exiting turn four. Fifth went to twenty-fourth place starter "Flyin' Fireman" Calvin Dhondt. 2023 Track Championship goes to the "Lynnville Lightening" Corey VanDerWilt.
Zach Hovell led the first two laps of the Rugged Radios IMCA Sport Mods 20 lap feature event before fan favorite Jenae Gustin was able to take the top spot away. Gustin pulled away and appeared to be heading on to the easy win meanwhile Logan Anderson, Brayton Carter, Hovell and Tony Olson battled behind her. The caution came out though on lap 13 for debris in turn four along with Brandon Jacoby and Kenser Ellis getting together in turn two. Gustin held off Anderson and Carter on the restart but the caution came out again on lap eighteen for Ellis in turn four. On this restart, Carter would flirt with the skirt of Gustin's car exiting turn two allowing their bumpers to get hooked briefly, that allowed Anderson to get by both of them. Anderson went on to claim the feature win ahead of sixteenth place starter Matt Avila, Carter, Gustin and Peterson. Kyle Olson spun went a lap down was able to get back on the lead lap following a caution allowing him to work back through the field for an eighth place finish, that was just enough to take the 2023 track championship.
Dave Atcher grabbed the lead early in the Drury Automotive and Truck Repair "Class Too Tough Too Tame" IMCA Stock Cars 20 lap feature event after out wrestling Austin Schrage. Tyler Pickett and Jeff Wollam battled for second behind Atcher. The caution came out on lap five when Kaden Reynolds spun in turns three and four with a broken front end. Atcher held off Pickett and Wollam on the restart but this is where it started to get really hot and heavy. There was good four and five wide battles behind Atcher. Tenth place starter Austin Kaplan found a line nobody dared to run and he worked his way into the top spot using the highside on lap nine. Kaplan started to pull away until the caution came out on lap 18 when Kylie Rawlins spun in turn two. After the initial restart was called back because Kaplan tried to go too early, he was able to get a great restart anyways and hang on to take his third win in Motown this season. Meyer came home in second and claiming the 2023 track championship. Pickett came home third, Michael Jaennette was fourth and Scott Rice was fifth.
Final feature of the night was the Tire Demon by Love Tap Fabrication IMCA Modifieds 25 lap feature event. It was originally suppose to be a 20 lap feature but after challenge was purposed to Todd Shute and Joel Rust, Rust accepted the challenge and went to the back for extra money. The caution came out before a lap was scored when Ethan Robey, Paul Nagle and Bret Ramsey spun in turn two but all three managed to get going as the caution came out. Dustin Kroening grabbed the race lead early but just after lap one scored the caution came out when Rust spun in turn four. Kroening held off Ronn Lauritzen and Todd Shute on the restart. Kroening worked the top side as Shute worked the bottom, Shute was able to take the top spot away on lap eight. Shute was able to remained strong allowing him to go on and claim his fourth win of the season and clinch the 2023 track title by 4 points over Rust. Tripp Gaylord finished second, Rust made a show and worked his way to finish third, Lauritzen was fourth and Maguire DeJong was fifth.
