Eventually I decided to attend Boone for the Bayer Crop Science Hawkeye Challenge and Saturday Night Weekly racing. A total of two hundred and twenty-six cars signed in to tame Iowa's Action Track, including the Sprint Kings' sprint cars. The new double feature format would be run in the stock cars (50 entries) and hobby stocks (42 entries). Modifieds, Sport Mods and Mod Lites each ran 1 feature. The Sprint Kings are a mixture of IMCA RaceSavers and Knoxville Sprint Cars, and only 6 of them showed up.
Night was action-packed all night long, and the final chequered flag waved at 11:26 pm, meaning I was back home in Motown a little after 12:30 am. Hawkeye Challenge paid $1,000 to win to be the overall winner and $500 to win your class.
The first big dance race of the night was the Bayer Crop Science Hawkeye Challenge, featuring four cars from each of the six classes, giving you twenty-four cars. Laps to be overall champion: Sprint Cars 25 laps, Modifieds 23 laps, Sport Mods 22 laps, Mod Lites 22 laps, Stock Cars 21 laps and Hobby Stocks 20 laps, meaning technically the Hobby Stocks had a 5-lap advantage over the Sprint Cars. Eric Knutson took the overall win and Hobby Stock win, pocketing $1,000. Austin Grey, driving a Mod Lite, finished second overall and took the Mod Lites. Cam Reimers finished third overall and took the Sport Mods. Jeremy Mills was fourth overall and took the Modifieds. Michael Jaennette was fifth overall and took the stock cars. The top sprint car was Luke Lane, and he completed 24 laps. and finished 15th overall.
Landon Elliott jumped out to the race lead early in the IMCA STARS Mod Lites 15-lap feature event sponsored by Carquest Auto, Truck, and Farm. The only caution came out on lap two when Colin Anderson spun on the bottom of turn four. Elliott held on to the race lead until Josh May had worked his way from eleventh to the race lead on lap five. May was quickly followed by Austin Gray, coming from twelfth place. Elliott ran third, but when the checkered flag waved, it was May capturing his second win of the season in Boone. Gray, Elliott, tenth-place starter Bryan Zehm, and Jaxon Carr rounded out the top five.
In the IMCA Northern Sport Mods sponsored by Elmquist Towing 18-lap feature event, Brayden Shepherd took full advantage of his pole position and grabbed the race lead. Jason Carney ran second until mechanical issues forced him to slow exiting turn four, resulting in Dayton Swatek having nowhere to go. Shepherd held off Ryan King and Curtis Veber on the restart, and despite a late race charge by eleventh-place starter Mike Smith, nobody had anything for Shepherd. Finishing behind Shepherd were Smith, Veber, King, and thirteenth-place starter Dusty Masolini.
Jeff Wilke led the first six laps of the Sprint Kings 15-lap feature event before Luke Lane took the top spot away. Lane pulled away from Wilke and went on to capture the feature win, pocketing $600 in the effort. Wilke finished second, Joshua Jones was third, Tim Young came home fourth, and Derrike Clark was fifth.
Next on the race track was the 20-lap IMCA Modifieds feature event presented by D&E Outdoor Services. Brandon Leeman outwrestled the lead at the drop of the green from fellow front-row starter Colton Nelson and then was followed by Ronn Lauritzen and Ethan Robey. Leeman appeared to be going on to the win as the battle heated up behind him for position. The only race caution came out on lap 13 when Adam Wasserman, Paul Nagle, Griffin Taylor, and Dan Wagner got together in turn two. Leeman held off Robey and Laurtizen on the restart initially, but Robey refused to go away and applied pressure. Robey took the race lead away and held on to capture his first career Modified feature win. Lauritzen took second, tenth-place starter Jeremy Mills took third, Todd Shute was fourth, and fourteenth-place starter Trevor Fitz was fifth.
The first division to run two feature events was the IMCA Stock Cars presented by Boone Moose Lodge 104, with both features being 20 laps long. In feature number 1, Thor Anderson and Robert Stofer led the field to green. Anderson jumped out to the race lead. The first caution came out on lap three when Johnathon Logue spun, resulting in Matthew Meinecke, Josh Daniels, Cole Nordman, Brandon Gritz, and Donavon Smith getting together in turn four. Logue was able to get moving before the yellow. A lap later another caution came out when Josh Vanwinkle spun in turn four. Anderson continued to lead the way. The final cautions came out on lap nine when Joe Brenner came to a stop on the backstretch and then on the restart when Logue was spun by John Ades in turn four. Anderson held on to the lead for another lap but then slipped up just enough, allowing Doug Smith to take the top spot away on lap 11. Doug Smith went on to capture win number two in Boone. Pickett, Meinecke, twenty-second place starter Jay Schmidt, and Anderson rounded out the top five.
In feature number two, Kyle Everts led the first nine laps before Devin Smith was able to take the top spot away on lap ten. The first caution came out on lap 11 when Sam West spun in turn four. The next caution came out when Michael Hotze spun in turn two as Lincoln Vansickel spun in turn four. Devin Smith looked strong and fended off Jimmy Gustin, Everts, and tenth-place starter Michael Jaennette on the restart. Smith appeared to be heading on to the feature win, but the caution came out when Matt Speiss spun exiting turn two, forcing a green-white-checkered. Devin Smith hung on to capture feature win number three in Boone. Gustin took second, Jaennette was third, thirteenth-place starter Blake Lehman was fourth, and John Watson took fifth.
The last two feature events come from the IMCA Hobby Stocks, sponsored by Pickett Salvage, with both features 15 laps in length. In feature number 1, Michael Johnson Jr. outwrestled the race lead from pole starter Ethan Dirks. Johnson was followed by Aron Fye. Braden Gifford worked his way from sixth to the race lead on lap five. Braden Gifford was followed by Will Smith, and this set up a good battle for the race lead out front. The first two cautions came out on lap seven; Dirks spun in turn two, and then on the restart, Dylan Hill came to a stop in turn one. Gifford continued to lead the way until lap 12, when he would spin in turn three after contact from Johnson, which would allow Will Smith to take over the race lead. Smith and Wayne Gifford battled it out in the final three laps, with Wayne Gifford going on to capture the feature win. Smith finished second, a tenth-place starter. Corey VanDerWilt was third, thirteenth-place starter Max Pogeler was fourth, and seventeenth-place starter Ben Newhouse was fifth.
In feature number two, Kendal Madsen II grabbed the race lead from the drop of the green, but shortly after lap one, the caution came out when Brayson Siegle and Josh Vancannon spun in turn four. Madsen continued to lead, but the caution came out again after lap two was scored when Russell Kilsaris broke on the backstretch. Madsen led until lap seven when Joey Young was able to take the lead away. The next caution came out on lap seven for Darin DeZwarte in turn four. Young looked to be strong, but the caution came out two more times on lap 11, first for Ryler Zeigmann up into the wall exiting turn four and then Eric Knutson spinning on the backstretch exiting turn two, resulting in Nathan Parkhill having nowhere to go. Young held off Alex Yoerger to capture the feature win. Yoeger was second, Tanner Jones was third, Matt McDonald was fourth, and Shane Butler was fifth. The hard charger of the feature was sixth-place finisher Zach Day, who came from twentieth place.
