Kay Wins Deery Series Opener at Tipton

Well you can add another track off the list that Foxman needed to visit as Saturday Night, I made the 1 hour and 45 minute trip over to the Deery Brothers Summer Series Opener at the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton. This was originally scheduled to be the fourth race of the season but after mother nature washed out the shows at Davenport, Maquoketa and Dubuque the week before it made it the season opener.

A beautiful Saturday to visit a new track and I was very impressed with the small little fairgrounds race track and might have to make a return visit sometime if the schedule allows. That is the reason i have been unable to attend previous shows at Tipton because I have had prior commitments or something else come up last minute to prevent making the trip over for some racing.

A total of 119 cars checked in to the DRT TRAK Racing Inc. promoted event at the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton including 36 IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series Late Models. 24 Modifieds, 30 Sport Mods, 12 Street Stocks and 17 A.I.R.S (American Iron Racing Series) were in the pit area. Final Checkered flag flew at 11:36 pm.

First feature of the night was the Street Stocks 15 lap feature event, Jeff Struck and Johnny Spaw led the field to the green flag and it was Struck that nabbed the top spot early. Only thing slowing down Struck was a caution on lap two when Ian Huff spun in turn four. Struck led from start to finish going on to take his second win in as many nights, as he picked up the Street Stocks win at Davenport on Friday Night. Cary Brown finished second, Spaw held off Joe Bonney for the third spot with Bonney finishing fourth. Jesse Owen came across the stripe in fifth.

In the Sport Mods 15 lap feature event, Brandon Setser flexed his muscles as he fend off all challenges from Kyle Olson and Austin Heacock. Three cautions came out during the event, first one on lap five and then a pair of cautions on lap 10 slowed the event but Setser was determined to not be denied the victory. Tony Olson worked his way up to finish in the second spot. Shane Paris was third, Austin Heacock was fourth and Gage Neal was fifth.

Next up was the American Iron Racing Series 15 lap feature. Mike Arp led the opening lap before a caution came out when Dan Kessler spun on the back stretch. RJ Lank took the top spot away on the restart but it was Matt Hudspeth wrestling the top spot away on lap five.  Hudspeth scored the win in his 1970 Oldsmobile Cutless. Ron Barker, Lank, Kessler and Arp rounded out the top five.

Andy Eckrich and Jeremiah Hurst led the field to the green in the 50 lap IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series Late Models feature. Eckrich took full advantage of that by grabbing the top spot but the caution came out on lap three for Darrel DeFrance and Todd Van Tassel in turn two. The caution came out again on lap four and lap 11. It was the lap 11 restart that saw Eckrich have his handsful as Justin Kay worked his way to third and then second. Kay took the top spot away on lap 13 but then the caution came out again on lap 14 and then again on the restart. The final caution came out on lap 18 for DeFrance, Van Tassel and Nagle in turn three. Kay was got a great restart and pulled away until late race lap traffic allowed Eckrich to get with in a car length. Kay crossed the finish line first to win his fifth straight Deery Series win at the 1/4 mile Cedar County Raceway. Eckrich, Hurst, Tyler Bruening and Ryan Dolan round out the top five.

Final feature of the night was the 20 lap Modifieds feature event. Dunkerton's Troy Cordes led all 20 laps to take home the trophy. Only thing slowing him down was the cautions on lap 9, lap 11 and lap 12. Finishing behind Cordes was Oskaloosa's Cayden Carter, Jeff Aikey, Wisconsin Racer Mike Mullen and Justin Kay.

Great job by Bob Wagener and Carrie Rouse for putting on such a great show and Dirt Doctor Al for prepping the track. I was extremely impressed with a well ran show even if I had an 1 hr and 45 minutes trip back home to Marshalltown.

Next race promoted by DRT TRAK Racing Inc is Friday May 3rd at the Davenport Speedway when the Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models make a visit to the 1/4 mile oval. Street Stocks, Non-Sanctioned Modifieds and Non-Sanctioned Sport Mods are also on the card. Then again on Saturday May 4th at the West Liberty Raceway 1/2 mile race track.

Sunday Night its off to the Benton County Speedway in Vinton to work corners one and two again for Promoter Mick Trier and Race Director Mike Van Genderen. The camera will be most likely put a side for a couple of weeks since Friday Night its off to the Season Opener at the Hancock County Speedway since I have a family wedding to attend on Saturday that will force me to miss racing action on both Saturday and Sunday next week.
