Last Sunday made the trip to the Benton County Speedway in Vinton to work Corners 1 and 2 so that meant their was no blog recap from that race but since mother nature won the races this weekend wanted to remind you who picked up opening night wins. Cole McNeal won the Micro Mods, Brett Vanous won the IMCA Hobby Stocks, Drew Papke won the Legends, Luke Benischek won the Sport Compacts, Tony Olson took the IMCA Sport Mods, Jay Schmidt in the IMCA Stock Cars and Jeff Aikey in the IMCA Modifieds.
This week mother nature infortunately forced the cancellation because of the rain and cold weather that once again found its way to Iowa, Next Sunday is the IMCA Late Models Season Opener with IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks, Micro Mods and Sport Compacts also racing. Tracking Packing / Hot Laps at 4:45pm and Racing at 5pm.
Okay now lets talk about this week, the only night I was able to go to the races was Friday Night at the Hancock County Speedway for their Ruter Farms and Mason City Motor Sales Season Opener. I was working behind the microphone with Chad Meyer for the 3rd straight year however I still kept some notes for feature action.
First feature of the night was the 10 lap IMCA Sport Compacts feature. Ryan Bryant started outside front row and he took advantage as he out dueled Oliver Monson for the top spot. Bryant led all 10 laps in going on to take the win. Joshua Uhl finished second, Jarad Gross was third, Monson fell back to fourth and "Upside Down" Bubba Brown rounded out the top five.
Quick Peformance IMCA Stock Cars 15 lap feature lived up to an old class nickname of the "Class Too Tought to Tame" as their was thrilling two and three wide racing. Kevin Opheim led the first six laps and held off several challenges through out those laps from Dan Mackenthun, Chad Palmer and Donavon Smith. Mackenthun took the lead away from KO on lap seven but knew Palmer and Smith was not going away. Mackenthun held off the challenges and took the win back to Hamburg, Minnesota. Defending Track Champ Chad Palmer finished second, Donavon Smith was third, John Campbell was fourth and Rick Mees was fifth.
The House Motorsports IMCA Sport Mods 15 lap feature had their initial start called back. When the restarted it was Autum Anderson from Mason City leading the first lap. Nate Whitehurst took the top spot away on lap two and cruised on to the win ahead of the Fett Brothers. Colby and Alec Fett battled it out for the second and third spot several times with Colby nabbing the second spot, Alec finished third. Kyle Germundson grabbed the fourth place finish ahead of Anderson.
In the MPM Marketing IMCA Hobby Stocks 15 lap feature, Drew Barglof grabbed the early race lead and had several challenges from Trevor Holm and Cory Probst. The caution came out on lap five for Brandon Nielsen coming to a stop in turn two. Three laps later on lap eight the caution came out for Blaine Hanson coming to a stop. Barglof, Holm and Probst continuing to battle for the lead. Holm stole the lead away on lap 12 and held off all challenges from Probst, who also got by Barglof, to take the win. Finishing Holm, Probst and Barglof was Malik Sampson and Cody Nielsen.
Final feature of the night was the IMCA Modifieds 20 lap feature event. Jeremy Mills led from start to finish to take the win on Opening Night. Only thing to slow him down significantly was the caution on lap eight for Cody Knecht in turn four. Austin Wolf nabbed the second spot away from Kelly Shryock. Troy Swearingen finish fourth and Ben Kraus was fifth.
Final checkered flag was displayed at 10:15 pm meaning fans, drivers and crew was able to get home before the Sprinter Blast came to Iowa. Saturday was fun had to get up drive to Iowa City for my Cousin's wedding at the Rapid Creek Cidery and it was rainy all day but still had some fun at the wedding before making the drive back home after staying the night in a hotel in Coralville.
Racing continues next week with Gisch Repairs and Mason City Auto Sales Night at the Races. IMCA Modifieds, Quick Peformance IMCA Stock Cars, House Motorsports IMCA Sport Mods, MPM Marketing IMCA Hobby Stocks and IMCA Sport Compacts. Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing to Follow. Hancock County Speedway is celebrating its 25th season of racing having opened up on June 30th, 1995 after a month of rain outs.

The plan for the week ahead is Thursday Night heading to the Stuart Speedway for the Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models Special plus IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods and IMCA Hobby Stocks. Friday Night back behind the microphone at the Hancock County Speedway, Saturday Night is still open right now with a few choices for racing and Sunday Night is back to Benton County Speedway in Vinton to work a corner. Don't worry Fort Dodge racing fans I will make a few visits this year first most likely the Dirt Knights Tour night.
